Public bug reported: Don't really have any. I simply authorized the automatic update mechanism. The updates were downloading and installing in the background, while i looked at a news website -- then a 'trouble' box popped up asking if I wanted to report the problem. [Bug 127617] Re: GNOME Power Manager installation problem
I have been experiencing this problem for about two months now, I am on Karmic 9.10, and after a routine upgrade was asked to reboot, so being an absolute novice with Ubuntu I did what I was told and rebooted the computer and ever since then have been getting the message "the configuration defaults for gnome power manager have not been installed correctly . . ." exactly as described above by others. I have spo0ken to work colleagues about this and they have suggested that as it was caused by an upgrade to just wait for another upgrade to remedy it, but it has been several months now with no visible change. When I switch on the computer, (Acer desktop, 2Gb RAM,), often I get the usual small circular icon, then I very briefly get a message appearing, I am unable to read it as (1) the letters are very compressed and almost indecipherable (2) the message is displayed for about 1 or 2 seconds, then the display compresses to a narrow band across the middle of the screen and nothing else happens, no hard drive activity etc. If I force a reboot at this point I again get most of the above, but then I get the user name / password, but this is not the log on box I used to have. I can then log on as usual and everything appears to be "normal". Have checked System / Preferences / Power Management, but everything appears to be correct. Being a very new Ubuntu user, I don't want to go "fiddling" and FUBAR everything. If someone has the time to take pity on me and point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. It does not appear to be the same message every time, nor does it go from message to message in succession. Clicking on "OK" closes the upgrade manager and returns me to the desktop. I just confirmed it works as a workaround. Odd thing is that even video playback is affected after suspending (mplayer, totem, vlc and derivates). kill'ing pulseaudio makes video playback back to normal, but with no sound. Thank you to all of you who posted information here-very useful! It took me all night searching the net to find how to get my Cyberdrive CW038D working under Debian. All I had to do in the end was add "CDR_NODMATEST=true" (without quotes) to /etc/environment. I also disabled autofs by putting a # in front of any lines related to the CD drive in /etc/auto.* ... but I'm not sure if that made any difference to fixing the problem. I didn't have to kill /usr/sbin/hald to make it work. I was then able to use K3b to burn the iso image successfully.
