[Bug 269904] Re: Screen refresh problems with nvidia on intrepid

2008-10-17 Thread Kuba Górski
This bug has not disappeared completely, however the reproducibility
factor has gone down to 10%. My setup is a Dell M1330 GF 9400M GS.
Disabling loose bindings did more or less the same result for me. Now
i'm running with: compiz.real --ignore-desktop-hints --replace --loose-
binding core ccp

However, if I scroll for past commands (arrow-up) in gnome-terminal the
refresh bug shows by failing to update the text field when vsync is
enabled. Can someone confirm this?

Otherwise this fix has worked flawlessly. Great work! :)

[Bug 207473] Re: Screen brightness double level changes

2008-10-17 Thread Kuba Górski
I have noticed something interesting..
When a menu is open (Applications,Places or Systems), and Fn+up/Fn+down keys
are pressed, the screen brightness is changed correctly without any
double/quadruple steps, although, now there are only 5 brightness levels,
whereas my LCD screen supports 8 levels . Can somebody confirm this?

I can confirm that killing the gnome-power-manager process fixes the
multiple brightness level hopping, however there are only 5 brightness
levels.

Now, the amount of brightness hops in my case have varied from 2 to 4
steps for a single Fn+Up/Down press. Which leaves me with the conclusion
that the acpi gnome-power-manager brightness controls are overlapping.

For now im sticking to a gnome-panel brightness applet, the blacklist video
hack creates a lot of new problems here.
Running Dell M1330, GF9400M GS, 2.6.27-7-generic, and latest Intrepid updates
as of now.

[Bug 283972] Re: [intrepid] iwlwifi-5000-1.ucode missing after recent update to kernel 2.6.27-7

2008-10-15 Thread Kuba Górski
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 283873 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/283873

This is probably related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/linux-restricted-modules/+bug/269926

Two were mentioned there, one by Craig: (the link has the 5000 ucode
too)

I downloaded iwlwifi-4965-ucode-228.57.2.21.tgz from
http://intellinuxwireless.org/?n=Downloads and extracted the microcode
to /lib/firmware/linux-image-2.6.27-3-generic and this error message
went away.

and one by Leann:

This bug is resolved by installing linux-restricted-modules-common,
which contains/provides the necessary firmware, so this bug should be
closed in my opinion. Craig, is there a reason installing linux-
restricted-modules-common is not an adequate solution for you?

This is not a bug really.

[Bug 280805] Re: Latest nvidia driver for Interpid (x64) makes my fan spin all the time.

2008-10-12 Thread Kuba Górski
Running 2.6.27-7-generic kernel on intrepid beta 32-bit, Dell M1330,
Nvidia 8400M 177.80 driver. Same problem. Dell fan control might fix it.
Or it might be that the driver cant get info from bios, therefore puts
it on max, could be one module too much/too little.

[Bug 204996] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup

2008-06-24 Thread Kuba Górski
Sorry for posting so many times in a row.

But this time I have solved the freezes, in my case at least. What I did
was to create a redistributable bootable backup dvd with remastersys
in case I had to reinstall. Since I gutted the Hardy installation from
trying to fix the bug I used the backup for the first time. Only later I
realized there were no lockups. It has been stable for 1½ days now. I'll
report further some week from now. Present dmesg attached. Still
2.6.24-19-generic.

[Bug 204996] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup

2008-06-23 Thread Kuba Górski
Hi!
Can you help me testing out this (ugly fix?). Out of pure curiosity I did:
echo 1 /proc/sys/vm/block_dump
but while trying to 'trace' the bug with dmesg (assuming it's I/O related) I
couldn't find anything. WHY? Because my Ubuntu Hardy stopped freezing! My
theory is that this command works like a 'keep-alive', thus the drive has no
room to 'time-out'. Since there is no way to explain this accurately, can
somebody try this and confirm? When you're done revert with: echo 0
/proc/sys/vm/block_dump. Do dmesg to check the output. Not a fix, but always
something.

Ignore echo 1 /proc/sys/vm/block_dump, this only delayed the freeze.

[Bug 239021] Re: Hardy Freeze/Lockup with kernel 2.6.24-16-generic up to 2.6.24-19-generic

2008-06-22 Thread Kuba Górski
Under the assumption that this is related to harddrive (sata) I've tried
changing fstab to not use the realtime function, but with no avail. The
2.6.25-7/8 kernels did not contribute to any improvement either.

However there's a major clue (ugly fix),
echo 1 /proc/sys/vm/block_dump
this triggers repetitive debug writes to disk, thus works like a keep-alive.
The funny thing is that the freezes cease when the block_dump is enabled. If
the type of freeze that you experience is akin of mine then this should work.
But this is nothing I would recommend. Also, I don't have tested this long
enough to be sure, but 1h+ without freeze is sure a great improvement in my
case.

[Bug 239021] Re: Hardy Freeze/Lockup with kernel 2.6.24-16-generic up to 2.6.24-19-generic

2008-06-21 Thread Kuba Górski
I can confirm that the 2.6.24-16-generic (hardy) Linux kernel running
under Gutsy had no such issues. However, appeared only when I
reinstalled with Hardy. Just like DJ Dallas, I cannot reproduce the bug
at will, nor can I trace it in any way. The only difference is that the
heavy freeze doesn't actually crash the computer. If I have music on
while the system freezes, the sound loops 5-6 times, then the CPU calms
down and works normally without any need to restart. This occurs about
2-3times/h without pattern, except the 100% CPU and complete
unresponsiveness of keyboard/touchpad.
