[Bug 550764] Re: Brother CUPS wrapper fails to change LPR driver settings

2011-06-17 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
As I mentioned earlier, I have been in touch with the German brother
support about this bug. A few days a go they send me a file with updated
drivers. I was hoping some one else could also test them and give me a
response on whether they are working before I reply to the support
person. Unfortunately for me the update seems to have no effect.

To install just do as follows:
1. tar -xvzf ink3_patch_1.0.2-0.tar.gz
2. cd ink3_patch_1.0.2-0
3. sudo ./install

[Bug 550764] Re: Brother CUPS wrapper fails to change LPR driver settings

2011-06-07 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
Today I got a mail from brother support:
Run:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure libpaper1
There you can set the default settings for your computer which should affect
all printers. On english systems it seems to be set to letter instead of A4.

It doesnt solve the problem but its a more comfortable workaround than
having to set it for each printer installed.

[Bug 550764] Re: Brother CUPS wrapper fails to change LPR driver settings

2011-03-09 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
I just expirienced this bug with Maverick. I have A4 paper and A4 set in
the printer options and also in OpenOffice or any other programm i was
printing from.

It would always cut of the first 2-3cm of a page until I just found this
command in the bug report and ran it. It solved my problem instantly:

$ sudo brprintconf_dcp560cn -pt A4

I have send a support request to Brother and asked them to fix this bug. Maybe
if enough people complain they might really do something about this. You can
find the support formular here:

[Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent

2010-08-21 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
I just cloned and installed the latest version of gpointing-device-
settings v1.5.1 from the gnome git repository. However it did not change
any thing in regard to the suspend/resume problem, when i suspend and
resume, scroll is still broken for my thinkpad trackpoint.

However it seems this bug is upstream related:

particullarly: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=518502#c9
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=598820

You can try gds 1.5.1 you going trough the following steps, also it wont be of
much use:
git clone git://git.gnome.org/gpointing-device-settings
cd gpointing-device-settings
./autogen.sh

[Bug 452049] Re: Gnome Places contains filesystems mounted via bind

2010-07-29 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
Today I have had some time to investigate this problem. It seems the bug
originates from glib and is not actually a bug in nautilus, the reason
is that mount points that are mounted with the bind option dont the a
GMount mount point assigned from glib.

I have explained the behaviour here:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=625552

If g_volume_get_mount() would return a GMount pointer for the mount point then
nautilus would display the file as mounted and not try to mount it again.
Unfortunately there seems to be no way to check the mount options of a given
mount point in glib.

[Bug 525902] Re: [iwlagn] Network card keeps dropping the connection

2010-05-07 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
Hi, I am also experiencing this bug. Sometimes my wireless connection gets
dropped and I am unable to reconnect, despite clicking on the accesspoint name
in networkmanager. Networkmanager shows the two dots, but only one of the is
green, the otherone never gets green and it does not connect. I have tried
serval things:
1. switching to suspend and resuming
2. opening the wireless options and edit the connection, change nothing, save,
try again
3. toggeling the killswitch

in option two I often notice that the mentioned wireless accesspoint has
a status of: 'Never' in the last connected column. Even though it was
just connected a few minutes ago.

While writing this the issue occured again, I tried option two without success.
Then after suspend/resume I could connect again.
dmesg attached.

notifies the user, maybe a check could be integrated into the computer janitor?

[Bug 569882] Re: Suspend Lenovo Thinkpad X61 with card in SD card reader

2010-04-27 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
I can confirm this bug, if an SD card is plugged in then suspend fails
at least every second suspend (usually the first after reboot still
works, and the next one fails). I just removed the sd card and could
suspend multiple times without any problem.

However I used to kept sd cards in my card reader for several days
before, and have never had problems before the upgrade to lucid.

If this could be fixed it would be very good.

[Bug 532374] Re: Lenovo Thinkpads with Core i5 and i7 suspend/resume (with kernel oops) once then fail horribly on next suspend

2010-04-26 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
I think I am experiencing this bug (or a similar one) on my X61
notebook. After a reboot i can suspend one or two times and also wake up
successfully. However the next time when I try to suspend the gnome
password dialog (like after the screen saver) appears, the screen
freezes and the little half moon keeps flashing (blinking).

Sometimes the screen just goes dark without the gnome password dialog
appearing but the system freezes anyway, this bug has started appearing
a few days ago.

Cheers Lanoxx

[Bug 452049] Re: Gnome Places contains filesystems mounted via bind

2010-04-12 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
I have marked the bug as confirmed since I was able to reproduce it on
three different computers.

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: mountall
+ Binary package hint: nautilus

  What happens:
- 1. In the Gnome panel I click on Places and I see two folders that I have
mounted in fstab with
- bind /.../a to /.../b
- bind /.../a to /.../c
- 2. When I click either of these folders I get the following error (with
different destination path):
- Error
- Unable to mount MyDocuments
- mount: according to mtab, /media/E/MyDocuments is already mounted on
/home/username/MyDocuments
+ 1. mount a folder a to point b with the -bind option in /etc/fstab, for
example:
+ /media/data /home/username/MyDocuments none
bind,user=username,group=username 0 0
+ 2. reboot and then open nautilus
+ 3. nautilus will show the new mount point in the places sidebar but it will
give you an error if you click on the mount point:
+ Unable to mount MyDocuments
+ mount: according to mtab, /media/data is already mounted on
/home/username/MyDocuments
  mount failed

  What should happen:
- Since these binds are specified in fstab it should not be necessary to mount
them at all since they get mounted automatically at boot time. Therefore these
entries are unneccessary in the Places menu and should be removed.
+ 1. nautilus should not show these binded folders since they are well
accessible through the filesystem
+ 2. if the mounted folder (e.g. /mount/data) is a block device then it will
appear in the places sidebar anyway and thus it is not necessary to show the
mount point again
+ 3. if the mounted folder is a normal folder from an existing file system then
its accessible both from the original location and the newly binded location,
thus the is no need to show it in places again
+ 4. this is quite annoying
+
+ Additional Information:
+ This bug persists in Lucid

  ProblemType: Bug
  Architecture: amd64
  Date: Thu Oct 15 12:04:11 2009

[Bug 539639] Re: Cannot use network-manager-vpnc

2010-04-04 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
I can confirm this bug. The upgrade to lucid should not remove the
'network-manager-vpnc-gnome' package! I installed it and it works fine
imediately? If the network manager applet interfaces with packagekit
maybe we could have it installed automatically it its not there? But
better would be of course not to remove it in the first place. Or was
this handled somehow different and network-manager-vpnc-gnome is a new
package?

Anyway since we know the solution this bug should me marked as in progress i
guess?
Cheers Lanoxx

[Bug 508754] Re: Trackpoint settings for wheel emulation in gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent

2010-04-03 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
if you get the error: unable to find device TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint
then you need to install gpointing-device-settings!
It was not automatically installed on my notebook after the upgrade to lucid
and i have been using the .fdi files with hal. It might be a good idea to
detect this and have lucid install the gpointing-device-settings package on
upgrade, if running on a thinkpad?

[Bug 318286] Re: Network manager forgets WPA Personal hidden network

2010-03-05 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
I have a similar problem which is that network manager tends to forget the
wireless password sometimes. Here is what happens:
1. I am connected
2. I suddenly loose connection
3. When I try to reconnect network manager does not react to my click on the
network name, that is, it does not even try to connect it simply shows no
reaction and no cycling green or grey bubbles.
4. When I go to edit connection and click on wireless my wireless ap is unter
last used: Never even though I was just connected.
5. I have to click edit, enter the system password (or is it for the
keyring?!?) and then go to security and reenter the password, i notice that the
password field is empty when the dialoge opens.
6. Sometimes I have to repeat steps 3-5 (suspending/resuming helps sometimes if
it wasnt successful after several tries through 3-5)
7. I can connect now.

This happens serveral times a week. Analogous to being connected and
loosing the connection I sometimes also resume from standby to find that
i can not connect, here also steps 3-5 are the same.

While the above steps show a workaround this is quite annoying as
everyone can see, especially if you quickly need connectivity.

[Bug 318286] Re: Network manager forgets WPA Personal hidden network

2010-03-05 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
Here is a link from ubuntuforums where several users complain about the exactly
same problem i reported:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1321005
and here is one more:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8348265#post8348265

I would like to request this bug be tagged high priority since it
affects network connectivity and without internet many features from
ubuntu are limited. This should get fixed still in karmic not only in
lucid.

Notice that poster one from the first link also added his daemon.log
file

I can confirm this bug, and that the solution from brian works. I have
summed it up, changed the bug description and set status to in progress,
since with this solution I was able to successfully upgrade Mysql.

Cheers Lanoxx

---Solution---
If the user is not in the database you can fix it with these statements:

1. Step one, get the password for debian-sys-maint:
~$ sudo cat /etc/mysql/debian.cnf |grep debian -C 5
[client]
host = localhost
user = debian-sys-maint
password = XX
socket   = /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
[mysql_upgrade]
user = debian-sys-maint
password = XX
socket   = /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
basedir  = /usr
2. Login to mysql as root and create the user debian-sys-maint with the
password from above
~$mysql -uroot -p

[Bug 153868] Re: package mysql-server failed to install/upgrade - Access denied for user 'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost'

2010-02-12 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
maybe the script could somehow check if the password in
/etc/mysql/debian.cnf is still the same as in the mysql database, or if
that doesnt work, then try to login as root and prompt the user for a
password? After all this bug has been in existance now for two years and
keeps surfacing all the time?

Also the pre-removal script could give a more descriptive error such as:
login with debian-sys-maint failed, check credentials.

Oh, bug #501655 seems to be a duplicate.

Cheers Lanoxx

[Bug 452049] Re: Gnome Places contains filesystems mounted via bind

2010-01-22 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
the mounting seems to be done in
libnautilus-private/nautilus-file-operations.c, in the function
nautilus_file_operations_mount_volume_full
Maybe it would help to check if the volume is actually mountable or whether it
is mounted with the bind option. I have no experience with compiling nautilus
but maybe someone can take a look at this function? Also g_volume_can_mount
might be useful? Just a thought.

[Bug 413385] Re: windows have no title after restarting when visual effects are set to none

2009-10-21 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
I can confirm this bug for Karmic too, it was present before I upgraded from
Jaunty to Karmic.
One time I set Visual Effects to None to try if I could use wine apps better
then. Afterwards I changed back to Normal. Unfortunately ever since when I
restart the system starts with Visual Effects None and all my window frames
(title, borders, etc) are gone.
After rebooting I have to set Visual Settings back to Normal and borders and
title reapper. I though this might get fixed when I upgrade to Karmic but the
bug is still present (about 3 weeks now).

I use Ubuntu (Gnome, standard settings, 64bit)

[Bug 390001] Re: Gnome visual effects not retained after reboot

2009-10-21 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
This bug is also present on my machine. It is similar to those reported
in: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/413385 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-meta/+bug/269292

I found a hint in the

gnome-control-center-2.28.1/debian/patches/95_desktop-effects-integration.patch
Line: 424
+ session_file = g_build_filename (g_get_home_dir (),
+.gnome2,
+session,
+NULL);

According to someone in the #ubuntu channel this file (~/.gnome2/session) is
obsolete. It is also definitely not present on my system as are several other
files mentioned in man gnome-session
Instead I find the session files in ~/.config/gnome-session/saved-session

Im not sure if that is related to the problem but it might be worth to
have a look. In fact I am wondering anyway why the file it deleted
anyway since there seems to be no further use in the program anyway nor
it is rewritten later.

[Bug 452049] [NEW] Gnome Places contains filesystems mounted via bind

2009-10-15 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mountall

What happens:
1. In the Gnome panel I click on Places and I see two folders that I have
mounted in fstab with
bind /.../a to /.../b
bind /.../a to /.../c
2. When I click either of these folders I get the following error (with
different destination path):
Error
Unable to mount MyDocuments
mount: according to mtab, /media/E/MyDocuments is already mounted on
/home/username/MyDocuments
mount failed

What should happen:
Since these binds are specified in fstab it should not be necessary to mount
them at all since they get mounted automatically at boot time. Therefore these
entries are unneccessary in the Places menu and should be removed.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 452079] [NEW] Kile installes Konqueror and Dolphin as recommended dependency

2009-10-15 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kile

Installing Kile will also install Konqueror and Dolphin since:
aptitude why dolphin
i kile Recommends konqueror | iceweasel
p konqueror Recommends dolphin
aptitude why konqueror
i kile Recommends konqueror | iceweasel

Thus installing Kile will also install these two packages. However this breaks
something in Gnome-Places. When ever I click on a book mark in gnome places
Dolphin opens instead of nautilus. Removing Dolphin AND Konqueror resolved the
problem.
Kile also still works?

Konqueror and Dolphin packages should check if they are installed along
side a Kde environment or a gnome environment and if its a gnome
environment they should not tamper with system settings.

2009-10-15 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
Public bug reported:

Like other bugs similar to this it happened after I resumend from suspend. One
more thing I want to mention is that when I suspended I had a second LCD
attached to my VGA port. But I unpluged it AFTER I suspended and went somewhere
else, THEN when I resumed my screen was black. Im already used to this and I
know that I can still enter my password because the gnome login dialoge appears
on the screen which is not attached. After I enter the password the FN+F7 key
combination works again and i can get my screen back by presing it a few times.
Im not sure if this is related to that bug, but its the only thing that I can
think of at the moment.

[Bug 357732] Re: cups always prints with the default page size

2009-10-13 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
I just found this bug report by pure chance. I have been seeing this bug
before and I am glad it has been fixed. However I wonder why there is
not simply an option (e.g. under System-Preferences-Time and Date or
somewhere else appropriate) to set this value? After all, most of the
people in the world use the metric system and A4 paper anyway, so why is
letter set to default at all? Maybe this could even be checked at
install time?

Re: [Bug 428880] Re: Very user unfriendly ld error messages

2009-09-14 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
Hi Colin,

I disagree with your oppinion. Partially you are right, since it should
be the goal of Ubuntu to provide a system that already contains
everything the user needs, thus making it obsolete to install or even
compile something of ones own. But on the otherhand the Linux and FOSS
community lives because of the diversity of OpenSource. Even though
Ubuntu contains already alot of packages and there are many 3rd party
PPA's available, but there will always be software on the net that can
be downloaded as source code to be compiled by one self. This is not
because you developers have failed, but because of the simple reason
that someone who has written a small application simply can not provide
packages for every distribution and the software might be too small, or
not popular enought to make it into the official Ubuntu repositories.

I can understand that it might be too much work to provide individual
feed back for each error message to tell the user what package to
reinstall as this would probably need a database that provides the
conversion of, for example -lgmp to libgmp3-dev. But still the point
remains that -lgmp is very undescriptive. If you would at least change
-lgmp to Library: gmp or something it would give people a starting
point.

Consider that many people don't write the makefiles and code by them
self but still want to download other peoples code and compile it by
them self. People even might know C/C++ or have a well enough
understanding of how the systems work, but are then put off because the
y don't understand the linking process.
If they run into problems because a simple library is missing this gives
unnecessary frustration to users.

Colin Watson wrote:
ld error messages are directed at developers, not at end users; there is
no reasonable way to make all possible compiler/linker error messages
end-user-friendly. If beginners who don't understand this kind of thing
are having to compile software, we've already failed.

[Bug 428880] [NEW] Very user unfriendly ld error messages

2009-09-13 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: binutils

Problem:
g++  -Wall -O3 -I ../ -Wno-multichar -fPIC -shared -lgmp bsha1.o cdkeydecoder.o
checkrevision.o decodekey.o file.o libinfo.o oldauth.o nls.o pe.o sha1.o
stack.o -o libbncsutil.so
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lgmp
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [libbncsutil.so] Error 1
Explanation:
when linking libraries with ld one often gets a message like this. Which I
think is very user unfriendly, since most beginners dont neccessarily know that
the -l in -lgmp actually stands for library.
So instead of:
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lgmp
it should say something like:
Linker Error: Could not find Library: gmp
Please install libgmp3-dev and run make again.

This would be much more descriptive to beginners and could save a lot of
trouble/frustration.

Re: [Bug 365783] Re: [Wordpress] Provide better error message in wp-config.php

2009-09-04 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
There should be something like:

File: /etc/wordpress/config-localhost.php could not be found. The file
is either not readable by this process or does not exist. Pleas check if
/etc/wordpress/config-localhost.php exists and contains the right
password/username. Also make sure the file has mode 520.

Basically an error like this is very undescriptive because you dont know
where to start looking for:
header(HTTP/1.0 404 Not Found);
echo 404 Not found;

But I filed this bug quite some time ago, I can not quite recall what
was the exact problem other from what I wrote in the bug report. But I
had something to do with the fact the one for the files I mentioned was
missing or not readable.

[Bug 414301] [NEW] installer reverts to partition selection instead of manual partitioning screen

2009-08-15 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
Public bug reported:

During installation of the karmic the installer reaches the step where
one can choose: between automatic partitioning using biggest free space
or manual partitioning. When one chooses manual partitioning and selects
all the partitioning options and mount points and then clicks forward
the installer goes to the screen where name and password are asked.

Problem: One might have forgotten some option and would like to revert
to the previous manual partitioning screen. Clicking Back however brings
one to the first screen where the selection between automatic and manual
partitioning is made. When you click manual again the previous partition
settings and mount points are lost and you have to set them again.

Suggested Fix: You should have to click the Back button twice to get
back to the automatic/manual selection menu.

on my default installation this was not activated causing all the

2009-06-05 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
I have to agree here. What will happen to programms like pidgin or
Skype. Can we not send them to the notification area any more? That
would be really disappointing. What other place will there be to have a
permanent place of putting apps that run in the background, if you
ultimately remove the notification completly?

Chauncellor wrote:
MPT: Oh, goodie! Looks like we have a winner here. I'll be voting that

May I ask what the end result of the notification area is, then? It
seems like the goal is ultimately to completely remove the notification
area. What would you do with dockable programs like Thunderbird or
Pidgin, then? Where would I send them?

Also, at this point in time, it seems that you guys are set on never looking
back into putting the notifications into the notification bar. I would like
to plead on my knees that something be done with the in-your-face pop-up,
pop-under, evasive, invisible, or-whatever-is-being-boiled-next method that
ultimately invades and annoys the users and also does less of a good job of
notifying. Never have I had a window that I couldn't minimize in Ubuntu, and
I'm always thankful of that when I have to use this Windows machine to
connect to dial-up. Please, for the love of everything good and green, do not
decide that the computer knows what windows should and should not be
minimized. Vincenzo Ciancia put it well when he said Really, I am in front
of my beloved Ubuntu but I hate a part of it.

That said, perhaps the end result of this cleaning may very well be for
the better of GNOME. I very vehemently disagree with this removal, but
perhaps there will be some better method that would be very friendly to
all. At the present, though, it's pretty much decided that it is not.

+1 this is a very nice idea.

Also I like to state AGAIN: Why is choice such a big problem for you
design people, if you want to remove the icons from the notificaion area
by default, ok go ahead. But then give people who do like it the option
to bring those icons back somehow!!!

James Iry wrote:
I want to chime in that the popup behavior is completely irritating. It
also doesn't solve the problem it purports to solve regarding users
ignoring important updates. When it pops up in the middle of some
important task I just cuss and click the close button at which point
the update will likely be forgotten until the next time it pops up and I
 close it, cussing again.

Pop under isn't a solution either since things that happen in the
background by definition are going to be unnoticed.

A completely reasonable solution would be to re-add the notification
icon but animate it subtly (a slow flash, bounce, periodic rotation,
whatever) for important security updates. That would be far less
intrusive than a pop-up but still hard to miss accidentally. The
animation could continue until the user acknowledges it in some way
(install now, install later, go away). If the user chooses install
later the icon could remain until installed but could be non-animated.
This would be a persistent low grade reminder that the user still needs
to take action. The icon could also reanimate after some number of days
of inattention. This should all be integrated with OSD notifications an
important security update is available. Similar text should be used
as a tool tip for the icon.

[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information

2009-04-29 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
I dont think the problem is the new NotifyOSD. Personally I think the
new notifyosd is great. The thing of question here is the
update-notifier package. So lets have a look at that one. The two
mainly discussed things are the bubbles and the icons. For the bubbles
they should and have been replaced in favour of using the new notifyOSD,
and they have. So fare so good, I like the notifyOSD so I like that
change. The other thing were the icons. Claim is that many people ignore
it. [1]. So you introduce the popunder. Maybe (many) people even like
it. But what I dont understand is how that leads to the reasoning the
the icons must leave? Whats wrong with keeping the icons? You have
removed the bubbles in favour of notifyOSD, do the icons really hurt
that much?

What I would suggest:
1. Open the popunder as a default for all those that ignored the icons
before. b(Already Implemented)/b
2. keep the icons (parallel to the popunder) b(needs to be
reimplemented)/b
3. add a check box to the update-manager popunder that says something
like: bOpen update-manager automatically when updates are available.
/b and next to that one a button: bMore/b or bAdvanced/b.
When the user clicks that one the Software Sources Update tab opens
and you have two more options: Open update-manager automatically when
updates are available. and Show update-manager icons in the pannel to
indicate its status. b(needs to be implmented)/b

Then you would realize both parties wishes. That would be a real choice.
The people who notoriously dont update have their popunder and therefore
a thing they wont ignore like the icons and second the people who know
what the icons are for have their icons and can disable the popunder if
they want. Plus, those that have been ignoring the icon before can still
can keep ignoring it since they have the popunder.

Now what do you think? Implement it for Karmic and maybe provide a
backport for Jaunty or a PPA. And then we can finally close this bug,
hopefully.

Cheers
Lanoxx

[1] Personally Im not sure if the message of the notifyOSD (telling you
there are updates available) and the icons would appear at the same time
would be so hard to put into a relation with each other, but anyway.

[Bug 364034] [NEW] panel hangs after suspend if ftp was connected

2009-04-20 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
Public bug reported:

If I have a ftp or sftp connection open and I suspend the system then
the gnome pannel will hang after I resume. Opening nautilus and clicking
the eject/unmount icon to disconnect will bring the gnome pannel back.
Also reconnecting to the internet or waiting for a timeout works
sometimes.

** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

+1 please do a survey or make a poll available for users to vote. There
are currently about 20 bugs with (from what I see) the majority of the
people complaining about it. This is not a minor thing.

[Bug 363294] Re: xchat-gnome returns error on install

2009-04-18 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
Looks like an error in libc6

$ dpkg --configure -a
dpkg: requested operation requires superuser privilege
ubu...@ubuntu:~$ sudo !!
sudo dpkg --configure -a
Setting up libc6 (2.9-4ubuntu6) ...

Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place
Bus error
dpkg: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 135

I tried to run aptitude update and upgrade but upgrade complains I have
to run dpkg first and dpkg returns the error above.

[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information

2009-04-18 Thread LanoxxthShaddow
I also think this is not a good decision. Windows that pop up are never
good, no matter for what purpose and whether they are pop-ups or pop-
unders. As Osliner I too explained everybody how to update their system
if the red notifier showed up, and that worked well for them. Personally
I also like the old system.

 1. I usually do not update immediately if I am in the middle of something but
instead wait until I have time.
 2. If a windows opens out of my control then I consider that a loss of freedom.
 3. I would probably click away the window and wait with the update until I
have time for it.
 4. If there is no further notification I will most likely forget about the
update (thus the need for a permanent icon)
 5. There is a similar thing on windows when after the update process the
restart notification pops up every 5 min. to remind me that I have to reboot. I
have been hating that ever since it has been introduced. I know here the
situation is less obtrusive but still comparable. And I do not like it.
 6. I can not understand the discussion about tasks not belonging into the
notification area. For me the notification area has 3 purposes:
 * First it is a place to quickly access running applications (like Skype or
Pidgin) which I do not want to have in the foreground all the time.
 * Second it is a place to make changes to (interact with) the system, like
volume control (or graphic control etc.) and get feedback from the system (like
Battery status, system status).
 * And third it is a place holder for things that need my attention (like
available updates, required reboots and restarts).

So the notification area as the name says does some important things: It gives
notifications to the user and lets the user interact with them (For example the
Pidgin icon notifies me if I'm online or not and lets me quickly call the main
window to chat with my friends or change the online status when I am offline).
UNLIKE the new notification system it is a way for PERMANENT notification and
interaction where as the new notification systems intention is for NON
PERMANENT notifications for which it does not matter if the uses notices them
or not, like volume change, wireless connection, display brightness. If the
user misses one, It does not matter usually.
Also the new notification system was deliberately designed to be non
interactive which is good. However If there is a state in the system that does
not only require us to inform the user ONCE but PERMANENTLY then the new
notification system is not the right thing (it can still do the FIRST
notification), instead we need something in the notification area.

Now If you really think that some users (mostly those that do not care
about how their system works and who are not experts), then I suggest
doing the following:

 1. I would no matter what restore the icons in the notification area (update
available, restart required, package manager working etc, everything that
belongs to this system).
 2. The update manager can still appear the first time there is the need for an
update, but then the user should explicitly be informed about it and be given
the choice whether he wants to have this window pop up automatically or not.
 3. Add an option in the Software sources-Updates tab. Like:
[ ] Automatically display update manager every 7 days if updates available.
[ ] Automatically display update manager every 24 hours if security updates
are available.
These can be unchecked by default and the user is queried the first time
updates manager is opened.

@Mark: I think the reason why people are so upset about this change is
not because of the change itself but because this change violates a very
important believe of the Linux community: bThat you always have a
choice./b There has just been announced the a
href=http://video.linuxfoundation.org/video/1106;winner/a of the
Linux Foundations ad competition. The most important message is: Do you
know you have a choice? and I think many feel they didn't have a choice
here.

If you want to do this. Then do it in a way that gives people the option
to keep the old behavior (without doing some hacks on the CLI).
