[Bug 452049] Re: Gnome Places contains filesystems mounted via bind
Today I have had some time to investigate this problem. It seems the bug originates from glib and is not actually a bug in nautilus, the reason is that mount points that are mounted with the bind option dont the a GMount mount point assigned from glib. I have explained the behaviour here: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=625552 If g_volume_get_mount() would return a GMount pointer for the mount point then nautilus would display the file as mounted and not try to mount it again. [Bug 318286] Re: Network manager forgets WPA Personal hidden network
I have a similar problem which is that network manager tends to forget the wireless password sometimes. Here is what happens: 1. I am connected 2. I suddenly loose connection 3. When I try to reconnect network manager does not react to my click on the network name, that is, it does not even try to connect it simply shows no reaction and no cycling green or grey bubbles. 4. When I go to edit connection and click on wireless my wireless ap is unter last used: Never even though I was just connected. 5. I have to click edit, enter the system password (or is it for the keyring?!?) and then go to security and reenter the password, i notice that the password field is empty when the dialoge opens. 6. Sometimes I have to repeat steps 3-5 (suspending/resuming helps sometimes if it wasnt successful after several tries through 3-5) 7. I can connect now. This happens serveral times a week. Analogous to being connected and loosing the connection I sometimes also resume from standby to find that i can not connect, here also steps 3-5 are the same. While the above steps show a workaround this is quite annoying as everyone can see, especially if you quickly need connectivity. -- Network manager forgets WPA Personal hidden network https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/318286 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It is similar to those reported in: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/413385 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-meta/+bug/269292 I found a hint in the gnome-control-center-2.28.1/debian/patches/95_desktop-effects-integration.patch Line: 424 + session_file = g_build_filename (g_get_home_dir (), +.gnome2, +session, +NULL); According to someone in the #ubuntu channel this file (~/.gnome2/session) is obsolete. It is also definitely not present on my system as are several other files mentioned in man gnome-session Instead I find the session files in ~/.config/gnome-session/saved-session Im not sure if that is related to the problem but it might be worth to have a look. In fact I am wondering anyway why the file it deleted anyway since there seems to be no further use in the program anyway nor it is rewritten later. -- Gnome visual effects not retained after reboot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/390001 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 452049] [NEW] Gnome Places contains filesystems mounted via bind
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mountall What happens: 1. In the Gnome panel I click on Places and I see two folders that I have mounted in fstab with bind /.../a to /.../b bind /.../a to /.../c 2. When I click either of these folders I get the following error (with different destination path): Error Unable to mount MyDocuments mount: according to mtab, /media/E/MyDocuments is already mounted on /home/username/MyDocuments mount failed What should happen: Since these binds are specified in fstab it should not be necessary to mount them at all since they get mounted automatically at boot time. Therefore these entries are unneccessary in the Places menu and should be removed. Re: [Bug 428880] Re: Very user unfriendly ld error messages
Hi Colin, I disagree with your oppinion. Partially you are right, since it should be the goal of Ubuntu to provide a system that already contains everything the user needs, thus making it obsolete to install or even compile something of ones own. But on the otherhand the Linux and FOSS community lives because of the diversity of OpenSource. Even though Ubuntu contains already alot of packages and there are many 3rd party PPA's available, but there will always be software on the net that can be downloaded as source code to be compiled by one self. This is not because you developers have failed, but because of the simple reason that someone who has written a small application simply can not provide packages for every distribution and the software might be too small, or not popular enought to make it into the official Ubuntu repositories. I can understand that it might be too much work to provide individual feed back for each error message to tell the user what package to reinstall as this would probably need a database that provides the conversion of, for example -lgmp to libgmp3-dev. But still the point remains that -lgmp is very undescriptive. If you would at least change -lgmp to Library: gmp or something it would give people a starting point. Consider that many people don't write the makefiles and code by them self but still want to download other peoples code and compile it by them self. People even might know C/C++ or have a well enough understanding of how the systems work, but are then put off because the y don't understand the linking process. If they run into problems because a simple library is missing this gives unnecessary frustration to users. Colin Watson wrote: ld error messages are directed at developers, not at end users; there is no reasonable way to make all possible compiler/linker error messages end-user-friendly. [Bug 414301] [NEW] installer reverts to partition selection instead of manual partitioning screen
Public bug reported: During installation of the karmic the installer reaches the step where one can choose: between automatic partitioning using biggest free space or manual partitioning. When one chooses manual partitioning and selects all the partitioning options and mount points and then clicks forward the installer goes to the screen where name and password are asked. Problem: One might have forgotten some option and would like to revert to the previous manual partitioning screen. Clicking Back however brings one to the first screen where the selection between automatic and manual partitioning is made. When you click manual again the previous partition settings and mount points are lost and you have to set them again. I have to agree here. What will happen to programms like pidgin or Skype. Can we not send them to the notification area any more? That would be really disappointing. What other place will there be to have a permanent place of putting apps that run in the background, if you ultimately remove the notification completly? Chauncellor wrote: MPT: Oh, goodie! Looks like we have a winner here. I'll be voting that idea up I hope it's implemented soon, it's exactly what I was thinking about! May I ask what the end result of the notification area is, then? It seems like the goal is ultimately to completely remove the notification area. What would you do with dockable programs like Thunderbird or Pidgin, then? Where would I send them? Also, at this point in time, it seems that you guys are set on never looking back into putting the notifications into the notification bar. I would like to plead on my knees that something be done with the in-your-face pop-up, pop-under, evasive, invisible, or-whatever-is-being-boiled-next method that ultimately invades and annoys the users and also does less of a good job of notifying. Never have I had a window that I couldn't minimize in Ubuntu, and I'm always thankful of that when I have to use this Windows machine to connect to dial-up. Please, for the love of everything good and green, do not decide that the computer knows what windows should and should not be minimized. Vincenzo Ciancia put it well when he said Really, I am in front of my beloved Ubuntu but I hate a part of it. That said, perhaps the end result of this cleaning may very well be for the better of GNOME. But then give people who do like it the option to bring those icons back somehow!!! James Iry wrote: I want to chime in that the popup behavior is completely irritating. It also doesn't solve the problem it purports to solve regarding users ignoring important updates. When it pops up in the middle of some important task I just cuss and click the close button at which point the update will likely be forgotten until the next time it pops up and I close it, cussing again. Pop under isn't a solution either since things that happen in the background by definition are going to be unnoticed. A completely reasonable solution would be to re-add the notification icon but animate it subtly (a slow flash, bounce, periodic rotation, whatever) for important security updates. That would be far less intrusive than a pop-up but still hard to miss accidentally. The animation could continue until the user acknowledges it in some way (install now, install later, go away). If the user chooses install later the icon could remain until installed but could be non-animated. This would be a persistent low grade reminder that the user still needs to take action. The icon could also reanimate after some number of days of inattention. This should all be integrated with OSD notifications an important security update is available. Similar text should be used as a tool tip for the icon. -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.9 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iQIcBAEBAgAGBQJJ+hWJAAoJEC3c23gFjIjfwDcP+wT9F1YYLF+mtMwmaPkhi8/Z bM3/UE+8WP8l7Vh0pfNSW1/juRbV7iwCNXcCC8roVsmWgMx9MnQxkAIuo1443LCz cbdXszUw8Wx5gPriJBXz+HTj6bzAtweqvU2E2CyY5d9Dfyo3xpYV7r8/H3naCcK9 Wl1epKRmFkS/KZ+2eFHZYE2tYTeSBvQJrWGkCS6UN267EzpgOhStKvv1zh/p9YTG EZ4P2EPk4sNUL11XMdFoThPTIu8FTPuV+TAqfcXECeveA7JfNbhoeEnlqZ+hfsEb iMUj/dqWLflQaOXm6SDrle2XDNxmRAJ2hiwLM3SazYHkdGnwMu+8j/04xm2IdLH2 1kuxa7FR5VQJf+meBJENNFzBVjNm/nxLLazuGmCow41PIbnNyrrFXxzvFD2vDFAJ 4fgIlf9OGMIWOrND/qA6mF/0PgpiXSX4a1dl1Jnnpzilj8L3lvMqOjg7g95n+uND 9bo+DOjVfK92KBH9Pgqe6LcYMgK3STjZWBJ/BG59OcZnwM87FMycjJJ18+3WDqUx prXZPyKlADe+RgufnjeD6VWq+Fhls3c7eGrl7h4iPPQ/KpAIwRLQGkQWRkNRHCo/ MW6m0XuL7WkpkLU3PhT6Sx14B2nxjKLgAJsGv9qiNYyIbuS1ZRvPymgH/uoCwHDb NsHO5wfjDt+6qAq0TzPv =mRcl -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332945 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information
I dont think the problem is the new NotifyOSD. Personally I think the new notifyosd is great. The thing of question here is the update-notifier package. So lets have a look at that one. The two mainly discussed things are the bubbles and the icons. For the bubbles they should and have been replaced in favour of using the new notifyOSD, and they have. So fare so good, I like the notifyOSD so I like that change. The other thing were the icons. Claim is that many people ignore it. [1]. So you introduce the popunder. Maybe (many) people even like it. But what I dont understand is how that leads to the reasoning the the icons must leave? Whats wrong with keeping the icons? You have removed the bubbles in favour of notifyOSD, do the icons really hurt that much? What I would suggest: 1. Open the popunder as a default for all those that ignored the icons before. b(Already Implemented)/b 2. keep the icons (parallel to the popunder) b(needs to be reimplemented)/b 3. add a check box to the update-manager popunder that says something like: bOpen update-manager automatically when updates are available. /b and next to that one a button: bMore/b or bAdvanced/b. When the user clicks that one the Software Sources Update tab opens and you have two more options: Open update-manager automatically when updates are available. and Show update-manager icons in the pannel to indicate its status. b(needs to be implmented)/b Then you would realize both parties wishes. That would be a real choice. The people who notoriously dont update have their popunder and therefore a thing they wont ignore like the icons and second the people who know what the icons are for have their icons and can disable the popunder if they want. Plus, those that have been ignoring the icon before can still can keep ignoring it since they have the popunder. Now what do you think? Implement it for Karmic and maybe provide a backport for Jaunty or a PPA. And then we can finally close this bug, hopefully. Cheers Lanoxx [1] Personally Im not sure if the message of the notifyOSD (telling you there are updates available) and the icons would appear at the same time would be so hard to put into a relation with each other, but anyway. -- [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332945 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 365783] [NEW] [Wordpress] Provide better error message in wp-config.php
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: wordpress It would be usefull to provide a more descriptive errro message in wp- config.php if the wp-settings.php file is not found. Currently the script only outputs: header(HTTP/1.0 404 Not Found); echo 404 Not found; if the file /etc/wordpress/config-localhost.php is not available. This file contains the user/password information. Suggested message would be some hind that the wp-config file could not load /etc/wordpress/config-localhost.php and an explanation of why this happens. ** Affects: wordpress (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Wordpress] Provide better error message in wp-config.php https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/365783 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I believe Roshan was talking about the notificaion area: I cannot imagine why getting rid of an updates _notification_ in a _notification area_ was reasonable. This is very annoying. Maybe you should read his post again. [Bug 364034] [NEW] panel hangs after suspend if ftp was connected
Public bug reported: If I have a ftp or sftp connection open and I suspend the system then the gnome pannel will hang after I resume. Opening nautilus and clicking the eject/unmount icon to disconnect will bring the gnome pannel back. +1 please do a survey or make a poll available for users to vote. There are currently about 20 bugs with (from what I see) the majority of the people complaining about it. [Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information
I also think this is not a good decision. Windows that pop up are never good, no matter for what purpose and whether they are pop-ups or pop- unders. As Osliner I too explained everybody how to update their system if the red notifier showed up, and that worked well for them. Personally I also like the old system. 1. I usually do not update immediately if I am in the middle of something but instead wait until I have time. 2. If a windows opens out of my control then I consider that a loss of freedom. 3. I would probably click away the window and wait with the update until I have time for it. 4. If there is no further notification I will most likely forget about the update (thus the need for a permanent icon) 5. There is a similar thing on windows when after the update process the restart notification pops up every 5 min. to remind me that I have to reboot. I have been hating that ever since it has been introduced. I know here the situation is less obtrusive but still comparable. And I do not like it. 6. I can not understand the discussion about tasks not belonging into the notification area. For me the notification area has 3 purposes: * First it is a place to quickly access running applications (like Skype or Pidgin) which I do not want to have in the foreground all the time. * Second it is a place to make changes to (interact with) the system, like volume control (or graphic control etc.) and get feedback from the system (like Battery status, system status). * And third it is a place holder for things that need my attention (like available updates, required reboots and restarts). So the notification area as the name says does some important things: It gives notifications to the user and lets the user interact with them (For example the Pidgin icon notifies me if I'm online or not and lets me quickly call the main window to chat with my friends or change the online status when I am offline). UNLIKE the new notification system it is a way for PERMANENT notification and interaction where as the new notification systems intention is for NON PERMANENT notifications for which it does not matter if the uses notices them or not, like volume change, wireless connection, display brightness. If the user misses one, It does not matter usually. Also the new notification system was deliberately designed to be non interactive which is good. However If there is a state in the system that does not only require us to inform the user ONCE but PERMANENTLY then the new notification system is not the right thing (it can still do the FIRST notification), instead we need something in the notification area. Now If you really think that some users (mostly those that do not care about how their system works and who are not experts), then I suggest doing the following: 1. I would no matter what restore the icons in the notification area (update available, restart required, package manager working etc, everything that belongs to this system). 2. The update manager can still appear the first time there is the need for an update, but then the user should explicitly be informed about it and be given the choice whether he wants to have this window pop up automatically or not. 3. Add an option in the Software sources-Updates tab. Like: [ ] Automatically display update manager every 7 days if updates available. [ ] Automatically display update manager every 24 hours if security updates are available. These can be unchecked by default and the user is queried the first time updates manager is opened. @Mark: I think the reason why people are so upset about this change is not because of the change itself but because this change violates a very important believe of the Linux community: bThat you always have a choice./b There has just been announced the a href=http://video.linuxfoundation.org/video/1106;winner/a of the Linux Foundations ad competition. The most important message is: Do you know you have a choice? and I think many feel they didn't have a choice here. If you want to do this. Then do it in a way that gives people the option to keep the old behavior (without doing some hacks on the CLI). -- [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332945 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
