[Bug 235539] Re: Laptop boots at Midnight, by itself.

2008-07-11 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Hello there,

I got exactly the same problem when upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy, or
probably rather after running the update manager afterwards. I've played
around in BIOS to find a solution but without luck and went on to test
boot parameters more or less randomly. After testing a parameter
sequence I found on an Ubuntu forum for solving a somewhat different
problem, the situation now seems OK. No more spontaneous booting at
midnight. The trick was to boot the kernel with acpi=off and
apm=power_off. Additionally, the line

apm power_off=1

must be added to /etc/modules. I don't understand why I need to make
these changes. My BIOS is supposed to support both APM and ACPI, even
though the computer admittedly is getting old, and why didn't I have any
problems with Feisty or Gutsy. Beats me, but you could try it out and
see if it helps even in your case.

[Bug 235539] Re: Laptop boots at Midnight, by itself.

2008-08-10 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
I'm really not fluent in these matters and part of what you wright is
really beyond me. However, the motherbord on the plagued PC is an MSI so
it's not impossible that it's got a BIOS from Foxconn. I'm prevented
from checking it at the moment, though.

Still, even if it is about a bad BIOS, it doesn't explain why I didn't
have any problems with Feisty or Gutsy (note that I never even tried to
use suspend, I always shut down my computer when I'm done working on
it). I've never updated my BIOS, so something's definitely changed in
Ubuntu between Gutsy and Hardy.

Anyway, since I don't really need ACPI, I'm quite happy turning it off.
I'll probably check the status again after each new kernel update and
definitely after Intrepid is released.

I can confirm having this bug too. Two different machines, both with
different Nvidia graphics cards. Running Hardy now but I think I had it
at least back in Gutsy, maybe even in Feisty.

[Bug 1061852] Re: Unity Application Lens slow to load

2013-06-04 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
According to bug #919801, the problem can be eased by cleaning the
Zeitgeist SQlite database. I'll be trying that on the one of my machines
that is worst off. On the laptop I'm using now, I'm down to a couple of
seconds for the dash to populate the first time after login. Not perfect
but a clear improvement.

[Bug 919801] Re: Unity dash file search is extremely slow

2013-06-07 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Trying the sqlite vacuum command didn't work all that well even though I
think it helped a little. It got even slightly better by deleting
everything in the ~/.local/share/zeitgeist/ directory but still, Dash is
quite slow to polulate the first time after login.

Now, the results of the files lens pop up after a couple of seconds and
the applications results come after about five. The rotating magnifying
glass in the search field indicates that there's still something
pending, however, but I can't figure out what it is.

After having been used once, the Dash is fast and responsive. It's only
a problem the first time after login, and I believe it's worst on the
first login after reboot.

[Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-09-27 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
I tested the tip in this link to force Unity to start:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/37629/geforce-go-7300-7400-blacklisted-
can-i-still-run-unity

It did start but the launcher was a mess. I then deactivated nvidia-96
and activated nvidia-173 in stead, and now I have Unity working with
Compiz effects. The slowness warned about in the link does not seem any
intrusive so far. I might test nvidia-current again but will probably
try running like this for a while and monitor the performance.

[Bug 1061852] Re: Unity Application Lens slow to load

2015-05-02 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Thanks, Bruno.

I tried your earlier proposal from July by making a startup entry like
this:

sh -c "sleep 15s ;/usr/bin/unity-scope-loader
applications/applications.scope applications/"

That didn't seem to make any difference, but now I've been using your
last workaround for about a week and it seems it cuts my Dash loading
time to two-three seconds. I'm not sure why or if there's been some
intermediate Unity update that hijacks the results. It seems to me that
the difference since last time is that now, you're loading two more
scopes:

/usr/bin/unity-scope-loader applications/applications.scope
applications/scopes.scope commands.scope

Care to explain why you made these changes?

[Bug 1061852] Re: Unity Application Lens slow to load

2013-06-04 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
I've had this problem in Precise, in Quantal, and now in Raring, and
I've had it on totally four Ubuntu machines in the household. The rest
of the Dash is also very slowly populated but the Applications lens
loads slower than anything else.

It's been worse in 12.10 than in 12.04 and I had high hopes for 13.04
after playing with the daily builds from USB sticks, but it's not any
better now. I think it was quite fast after a clean install but got
worse after running through the usual things-to-do-after-installing-
Ubuntu guides, which I usually do to get things like Opera, Ubuntu
Tweak, restricted extras etc. Maybe Ubuntu is only meant to be snappy on
"standard" installations?

Lots of people seem to have this problem but so far, I haven't seen a
solultion.

2013-06-04 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
According to this link
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2106949), you could achieve
the same by installing sqlite3 and performing:

cd .local/share/zeitgeist/
sqlite3 activity.sqlite vacuum

I'll be trying that on the worst of my three Ubuntu machines. On this
one, I tried emptying ~/local/share/zeitgeist and I'm now down to a
couple of seconds for the dash to populate the first time after login.
It's not perfect but it's an improvement.

[Bug 1071209] Re: memtest86+ test #7 false positives (random number sequence error)

2013-01-02 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
I git this bug too. Tried to figure out problems with an old computer
gone instable and found memtest86+ claiming that all three RAM sticks
were faulty. Then tried some good (I thought) sticks from another
computer with the same result. Then tried all sticks from both computers
in the second computer. Then went to my problem-free main system and
found that all of my brand new memory in that computer was also supposed
to be bad.

Having all the RAM memory in the house in every computer I own all of a
sudden gone rotten on test #7 didn't seem right at all, and I've been
searching for days before I found this thread. Slipped in a 12.04 and
ran memtest86+ from there and voila: no problems anymore - at least not
with the sticks I know to be all right.

Now, I can go back to the actual work of fixing the computer that
actually has problems. But I hope this bug is fixed by the release of
13.04 because to me, this has been a real time-waster.

[Bug 877622] [NEW] Cannot log on to Oneiric after fresh install

2011-10-18 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Public bug reported:

I made a fresh install over Natty, keeping my home partition untouched.
When booted, I feed my password to lightgdm and the screen goes black
for a few seconds, then goes back to lightdm. I can do Ctrl+Alt+F1 and
login via the shell, but not via the graphical login. Also, I can't stop
or restart the machine from the graphical environment. I can log on
normally to the guest account and I'm reporting this bug from there.

[Bug 871667] Re: .Xauthority sometimes owned by root, which blocks login

2011-10-24 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
I issued bug #877622, which was marked as a duplicate of this one. I've
now worked around the problem by issuing the following command in the
terminal:

 sudo chown -R username:username /home/username

This allowed me to log in graphically to my user account for the first
time after I did a clean install over Natty. Recreating the other user
accounts in the GUI perfectly reconnected them with their home
directories and I haven't experienced any problems so far. I'm going to
wait a couple of weeks before installing Oneiric to my other two
machines, however.

[Bug 720863] Re: Maverick slow and flaky after first login

2011-12-31 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
After Christmas, after way too long time, I was just about to follow the
given recommendation and post a new bug on this issue when I realised
that the computer all of a sudden had started to function properly after
one year of problems. Failing to identify any recent updates that I'd
expect to miraculously cure the box, I remembered that we'd just bought
a new mouse for it. So I plugged in the old mouse again and rebooted,
just to find the old problems had returned. I then connected a third
mouse that we have in the household, rebooted again, and voila: problem
gone again.

So the whole problem, mysteriously sticking with this computer through
three versions of Ubuntu was all due to a bad mouse, admittedly a rather
cheap one but nonetheless. It never crossed my mind but now, it makes
all the more sense. So I guess this bug can be closed permanently now
:-)

[Bug 720863] Re: Maverick slow and flaky after first login

2011-09-04 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
This is posted from a Live CD session of the just received Oneiric beta.
However, I had to log out and then back in to get control enough to do
this. In other words, the reported bug still exists in Oneiric beta.

[Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-08-28 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
I've disabled Cedric's PPA and purged all nvidia stuff, then reinstalled
nvidia-96 again from natty-proposed making sure to set gl_conf to auto,
reconfigure nvidia-96, and run sudo nvidia-xconfig. Still, I get no
Unity support or 3D effects in neither Classic nor Unity 2D. I've
attached again some command line output. Any comments, or advice would
be greatly appreciated.

[Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-08-29 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
@Alberto: I think your point would be very valid if the hardware that
was very old too. But in Lucid, I got full 3D effects using the
nvidia-173 driver, in Maverick, I had to downgrade to nvidia-96, and in
Natty, there's seems to be no way to get 3D neither in Ubuntu Classic or
Unity. Maybe I'm spoilt but I've actually gotten used to Linux and
Ubuntu supporting older hardware (also older than this) and and I don't
like the thought of ripping out my perfectly functional GeForce 7300 to
save me a second of boot time since it's anyway never going to work with
my favourite OS again.

Does anybody have experience with this graphics card and other drivers
than nvidia-96? Any tricks I could use when I can't seem to make it work
with nvidia-173 or nvidia-current?

[Bug 720863] Re: Maverick slow and flaky after first login

2011-04-29 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Yesterday, I made a fresh install of Natty and sadly, the stability
issues upon first logon after each boot remain the same. It makes no
difference whether I log on to Unity, Classic, or Classic with no
effects.

HOWEVER, I have now booted into recovery mode and as I write, I have
thirteen (13) windows open each of Firefox and Opera! The window
management is now flawless even though the low-graphics mode of course
is no great joy on my 22-inch widescreen monitor. In the normal graphics
mode, the first window of any program would have been unmovable and
required Ctrl-Q to quit. More than a few tries, and the whole desktops
would freeze.

Now that Natty is out the door, I wish somebody would have the time to
look at this bug because right now. Ubuntu is not fully functional on
this computer.

[Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-05-08 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
I got this too. Didn't notice it before install as running from the
Live, it couldn't run unity anyway. I've always had to install
proprietary drivers anyway before having any serious eyecandy so
expected things to work out after doing that. That being said, when
going from Lucid to Natty, I had to go back from nvidia-173 that I used
before to nvidia-96 to get things working. Now, if I mark nvidia-96 for
install in Synaptic, it threatens to remove my entire Xorg. Why's it
even there if it breaks your system? I really hope the right guys,
whether at nvidia, X.org, or elsewhere are able to take some action
here.

2011-05-09 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
I installed the updated driver from NVIDIA's web pages as it was claimed
to support xorg-server 1.10. However, it seems that the X server still
loads the Noveau routine and I don't know how to prevent that. So no
luck for me. Hope that with time, something is done with the distro-
provided drivers.

2011-03-06 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Just to add some information, I've now tried to run the live CD of Natty
Alpha 3 on my problem computer. It reverted to standard Gnome in stead
of using Unity, and it was just as flaky as Maverick. Noteworthy, Natty
Alpha 3 Live ran smoothly, with Unity, on my Sony Vaio laptop with AMD
processor and ATI graphics.

2011-03-07 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Another note: After receiving the computer from service last Friday (due
to a networking problem on both Win7 and Ubuntu), several major
components have been exchanged; The MB is now a P7P55-M (no longer
P7P55DE LX), the PSU has also been changed along with the DVD station
and even the tower itself. What remains is the combination Core i5 +
GTX460, and the memory chips are also the same. With all these changes,
the problem still remains the same.

[Bug 720863] Re: Maverick slow and flaky after first login

2011-03-20 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Today, I tried running PCLinuxOS 2010.12 from a live CD and discovered
it had the same problem as Ubuntu. Since the PCLOS Live doesn't use
autologon, I could log out without rebooting and log back on. The second
time, things worked as they should whereas the first logon was slow and
flaky just like in Maverick. PCLOS of course uses KDE and the X.org
package was x11-server-xorg v1.65-2pclos2010. I just wanted to add this
information in case it matters. It doesn't seem like a lot is happening
otherwise.

[Bug 720863] [NEW] Maverick slow and flaky after first login

2011-02-17 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Public bug reported:

Shortly before Christmas, I bought a brand new gaming computer for dual-
booting Win7 and Ubuntu. After testing the 64-bit Maverick live CD and
finding it flaky, mildly put, I still opted to install it on a dedicated
hard drive as planned. After enabling the proprietary Nvidia drivers
installing the regular updates, adding the Ubuntu X-swat PPA and
generally stretching both my patience and my imagination as far as I
can, I'm left with one very annoying problem:

To start with, the first login after boot is notably slower than
subsequent ones. I mention this because it might be related to the real
problem, which is that the first time I've logged in after each boot, my
desktop's multitasking capability seems to be gone. If I open a link
from Gwibber or from an email, my browser opening will steal the focus
entirely and I'm not able to switch between windows or even move any
window (including the browser window) until the browser has been closed
(sometimes requiring Ctrl-Q as I can't use the menus). Going on for a
while, the whole desktop will eventually freeze. If left alone for
sufficiently long, It might recognize my next command but at that point,
I've usually lost my patience and restarted the machine (Ctr-Alt-Del
strangely always works).

The only workaroyund I've found is to log in the first time after boot,
then log out, then log in again. The second login is blistering fast and
the desktop is super-responsive with no further problems. Very odd in my
opinion.

I've tried to reinstall Ubuntu without any improvement. I've tried to
run the 32-bit Live CD but it's just as flaky as the 64-bit. Linux Mint
Live is just as flaky as Ubuntu, and Fedora 14 live doesn't even boot
although it runs super-fast under Virtual Box (as does Ubuntu 10.10...)
An old Xubuntu 9.04 Live CD is the first thing in my collection that
boots without problems.

Is this all about having too shiny new hardware? I've got an Asus
P7P55D-E LX motherboard, A Core i5 processor, and an Nvidia GTX460
graphics card. Anybody with similar experiences and perhaps a tip,
please let me hear from you.

I've purged other nvidia stuff, added Cedric's PPA, and installed

nvidia-96, and run sudo nvidia-xconfig. As far as I can see, everything
should now be OK but still, I get no 3D effects or Unity support.
Either, I'm doing something wrong, or the new driver doesn't cut it for
me. I'd be enourmously thankful for any tips on how to check for errors.

mentioned earlier.

2011-06-20 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
I've had this problem too on using an Asus P7P55D-E LX motherboard with
Realtek RTL8111, a Core i5 processor, and an Nvidia GTX460 graphics
card. After exchanging every single component except the CPU, graphics
card, and memory sticks, ethernet now mostly behaves decently but I
still have the freezing problems mentioned by some above. Ive reported
those separately as bug #720863. It would be good if people with the
same problem could check out that bug and add yourself as affected or
otherwise give feedback because nothing seems to happen.

Would it be better if I reported a new bug about this on Natty or
Oneiric? I guess Maverick bugs aren't really receiving a lot of
attention anymore, or am I wrong?

[Bug 749535] Re: Natty Beta installation crashes

2011-04-14 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Redid the installation with 5GB allocated for /. This time, the
installation went fine also with internet update during install time and
with 3rd party software installation enabled. A couple of days and a
couple of normal updates later, things still seem fine, so I guess this
bug can be closed.

[Bug 749535] [NEW] Natty Beta installation crashes

2011-04-03 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I'm trying to install Natty Beta amd64 from an ISO image to a VirtualBox
VM. The installation wizard lets me through fine, including the
partitioning, but at the end, I'm presented with a window stating that
the installation program has crashed and that I should launch a new bug
report about it.

The Natty beta 2 live CD still has the same problem. I'm going to give
Natty a final shot after its release but I can't say I'm very
optimistic. The rest of the family now refuses to use Ubuntu on this
computer and if the problem continues to receive what appears to be no
attention at all (forgive me if I'm wrong), I'll have to look for
another distro for this machine.

[Bug 720863] Re: Maverick slow and flaky after first login

2011-04-26 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Today, I've tried a lot of different live CDs and it seems that one
thing common to the distros that have the problem I've reported here is
that they use xorg version 1:7.5. v1:7.4 or older seem to work well. The
only exception to the rule so far is Debian 6 as mentioned in an earlier
post. But Debian is Debian. Another distro that seems to work is Fedora
15 beta, using xorg 1.10-1-11fc15. Isn't the Natty release meant to have
xorg 1:10 too?

[Bug 555169] Re: [lucid] Keyboard and mouse freeze after grub, usb and PS/2 keyboard not working in X (after upgrade? bad-upgrade to lucid)

2010-06-17 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Unfortunately, the problem isn't solved after all. I still have the
occasional (and rather frequent, it feels) keyboard and mouse lag.
Moreover, which might be related, I sometimes don't get to the login
screen at all. I'm just left at the splash screen forever and am forced
to use the power button to get out. Looking through my log files, I see
these three types of warning repeatedly:

gdm-session-worker[1287]: WARNING: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf':
Filen eller katalogen finns inte
gdm-binary[880]: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found
gdm-simple-greeter[1379]: Gtk-WARNING:
/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.20.1/gtk/gtkwidget.c:5636: widget not within a GtkWindow

Could this be a GDM bug?

[Bug 555169] Re: [lucid] Keyboard and mouse freeze after grub, usb and PS/2 keyboard not working in X (after upgrade? bad-upgrade to lucid)

2010-06-17 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
I used gdmsetup to change to automatic login, then rebooted, changed
back to multiuser again, and rebooted twice more. I now have the
following warnings in my log files:

gdm-binary[902]: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found

gdm-simple-greeter[1376]: Gtk-WARNING:
/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.20.1/gtk/gtkwidget.c:5636: widget not within a

gdm-session-worker[1378]: GLib-GObject-CRITICAL: g_value_get_boolean:
assertion `G_VALUE_HOLDS_BOOLEAN (value)' failed

I.e. the warning about /etc/gdm/custom.conf are now gone. The two other
warnings I've had are the same, and I now have a new one; the GLib-
GObject-CRITICAL message. I'll keep my eyes up for the mouse/keyboard
problems for a while and see over time if it's still around.

[Bug 500377] Re: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf'

2010-06-17 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Papukaja's tip about using gdmsetup to change to automatic login, then
back to multiuser again helped me get rid of the warning about
/etc/gdm/custom.conf. The following two warnings I've had before are
still around, though:

gdm-binary[902]: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found

gdm-simple-greeter[1376]: Gtk-WARNING:
/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.20.1/gtk/gtkwidget.c:5636: widget not within a
GtkWindow

Besides, I've now got a new one:

gdm-session-worker[1378]: GLib-GObject-CRITICAL: g_value_get_boolean:
assertion `G_VALUE_HOLDS_BOOLEAN (value)' failed.

I'm following bug #555169 in order to see if this has anything to do
with my keyboard/mouse lag at login. I'm now also subscribint to the
present bug.

following bug #555169 and #500377 in order to see if this has anything

2010-06-10 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg

It seems this bug is a duplicate of bug #555169 so I'm marking it as
such. So far I have good experiences with writing a new xorg.conf from
the NVIDIA X server settings application. I'll wait a little longer
before I conclude but it seems my problem may have been solved by this
trick.

[Bug 555169] Re: [lucid] Keyboard and mouse freeze after grub, usb and PS/2 keyboard not working in X (after upgrade? bad-upgrade to lucid)

2010-06-10 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
I issued bug #590966 but have now marked it as a duplicate of this one.
I've been experiencing a lagging mouse and keybord for some time after
getting to the login screen. This seems to have been solved by writing a
new xorg.conf from the NVIDIA X server settings application and as such,
I'm quite happy about things now.

As a side note, though, I now see that the lag has "moved" from before
login to after. By this I mean that when I've entered my password and
enter has been pressed, there is a lag before there's any evidence of
GNOME starting up. I'll be subscribing to this bug to see if anybody
else are reporting similar symptoms.

[Bug 590966] [NEW] The login screen hangs for a while after boot

2010-06-07 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I have a fairly fresh Lucid system installed from scratch over Karmic.
In Lucid, I often experience that the lightning-fast boot presents me
with a login screen as expected but when clicking on a user, using the
arrow keys, or pressing enter, it turns out to be completely frozen.
After a lag of typically several seconds (~10), the response comes and
at that time, the user may have clicked around a lot, which typically
results in "authentification error" and the need to do the login over
again. Utterly annoying, of course.

Looking in the log files, I see warnings like:

gdm-session-worker[1287]: WARNING: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf':
Filen eller katalogen finns inte
gdm-binary[880]: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found
gdm-simple-greeter[1379]: Gtk-WARNING:
/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.20.1/gtk/gtkwidget.c:5636: widget not within a GtkWindow

I don't know if they are connected or relevant at all but include them
here just in case. Please let me know if I should provide more input.

The problem didn't seem to be fixed by Lee's workaround after all.
Anyway, I recently migrated to Lucid and assumed bu the fast boot that

[Bug 518204] Re: Should exclude very large files

2010-04-08 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Coming from bug #491956, I can confirm having the same problem. I'm
running a 32-bit Karmic on a Pentium D-based desktop but have the same
on an older P4 system. The longer boot times have been there since
sreadahead was replaced by ureadahead shortly after karmic was released.
Removing the pack file to force a reprofile has repeatedly proved that
without ureadahead, the boot is 5-10 seconds faster. I've attached the
output of sudo ureadahead --dump pack --sort=size.

[Bug 260492] Re: opening a directory using an application change associations incorrectly

2010-08-06 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Once you have Nautilus open, e.g. by typing nautilus in a terminal, you
can navigate to and right-click on any of the objects in your Places
menu and choose "other application" etc. This made my folders open with
Nautilus again, whether I do it from the Places menu, using GNOME Do, or
from within Nautilus itself. If this doesn't work for you, I'm afraid I
have no further advice. Anyway, this is just the same workaround
mentioned in the original bug posting and I guess this bug is really
about the hijacking of the opening application in the first place.

[Bug 444597] Re: After upgrade to karmic cups server do not start.

2010-01-06 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
I got it working on one of my two computers by using sysv-rc-conf to add
run level S to the CUPS entry. It didn't work on my main system, though.

While fooling around, I broke my older system (the one where i got CUPS
working) and had to reinstall Karmic. Before any updates are loaded, I
now see CUPS is running as it should. The version in the vanilla install
is 1.4.1-5ubuntu2. Next, I'll install all the updates and see what
happens.

[Bug 511387] [NEW] Services don't start on boot after Upstart update

2010-01-22 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: upstart

Running on a freshly installed 32-bit Karmic, I've got the same symptoms
as in bug #497299. After boot, pulseaudio is the only service that runs.
Manually running sudo modprobe vboxdrv will allow me to use my VM's and
sudo service cups start will let me print again.

The workarounds reported for bug #497299 don't work for me. I've got a
correct /etc/network/interfaces file and sudo initctl list says that
"network-interface (lo) start/running". Downgrading Upstart to 0.6.3.10
doesn't work either. Not even the Upstart update that came today helped.

I see other people have the same thing but was instructed to open a
separate bug for it. What can I provide to help debugging?

2009-12-27 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
I also have this problem. CUPS doesn't start on boot. It happened after
one of the more recent updates (I now have CUPS 1.4.1) on both my
desktops running Karmic (fresh installs). No problems until less than a
week ago.

I've searched the web and found this and other threads about people
having similar problems, but no solution yet. This is a major issue for
me and probably others who try to promote Ubuntu as our main system in
the family (I dual boot for the sake of my son's gaming...).

[Bug 444597] Re: After upgrade to karmic cups server do not start.

2010-01-15 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Still no way to make it work on my main system but I've discovered that
also vboxdrv does not start upon boot. This is definitely not a CUPS
problem alone so I'm now following bug #500520 in stead plus some
related threads on the Ubuntu fora.

[Bug 500520] Re: Some essential services are not started

2010-01-15 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 497299 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/497299

I've got the same problem. At least CUPS and vboxdrv fail to start upon
boot. The loopback contents in /etc/network/interfaces weren't the
issue. I'm considering to downgrade upstart but I'm worried about
possible dependency problems. Any known issues with going from 0.6.3-11
to 0.6.3-10?

[Bug 511387] Re: Services don't start on boot after Upstart update

2010-01-26 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Finally, somebody stumbled across a solution that worked also for me
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8728987&posted=1#post8728987).
The trick was to stop using CONCURRENCY=shell in /etc/init.d/rc and
instead revert to CONCURRENCY=none.

But honestly, CONCURRENCY=shell is a long-running trick for speeding up
boot on multi-core processors. I've even seen it in printed books in
shops. And before applying it on my Karmic install (I've used it since
Hardy), I did make sure the various web pages giving speed-tweak hints
were still recommending it. And after all, it did work fine until around
the time when Upstart 0.6.3-11 came. Downgrading Upstart didn't help me,
though, so maybe one of the other updates around that time is what broke
my system.

I think somebody should follow up this a bit still.

[Bug 497299] Re: upstart not starting init-scripts (event net-device-up IFACE=lo missing)

2010-01-26 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
In bug #511387, It's been noted that the use of CONCURRENCY=shell may
also prevent services from starting.

[Bug 919801] Re: Unity dash file search is extremely slow

2016-06-05 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
At last, a new Ubuntu release seems to have made a difference. With
Xenial, I'm down to a couple of seconds or less populating the Dash
first time on first login. I'm not sure if it's down to the new release
since I already had a startup command to preload selected scopes
according to Bruno Nova's suggestion under bug #1061852, and I guess the
startup job may hve survuved the upgrade:

/usr/bin/unity-scope-loader applications/applications.scope
applications/scopes.scope commands.scope

Nonetheless, under 15.10, this didn't work anywhere nearly as well as it
does in 16.04, so I guess the underlying problem has benefited from some
of the groundwork in the new release. Just out of curiosity, I'll
probably deactivate the startup job above to see what difference it
makes.

Anyway, having scope access times of less than two seconds on first
login has not happened to me since before 12.04, so finally, Unity 7
seems to reach its full potential - just in time for it to be replaced
by Unity 8...
