[Bug 1708469] Re: [Hyper-V] Transparent SR-IOV solves bonding race conditions

2017-09-21 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Per discussion with Microsoft, the backport to the stock Xenial 4.4
kernel is too risky to consider for SRU. Users will need to use the
linux-azure kernel for this. The linux-azure kernel has been promoted
to -updates so I will mark that task as Fix Released and set the linux
task to Won't Fix. Thanks.

** Changed in: linux-azure (Ubuntu)
Status: Fix Committed => Fix Released

[Bug 1704435] [NEW] [Xenial] nvme: Quirks for PM1725 controllers

2017-07-14 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Public bug reported:

== SRU Xenial ==
Pick up the following device quirk to resolve a hardware/firmware bug affectung
some NVMe drives that use the PM1725 controller. Under adverse circumstances
the bug can result in data corruption and loss.

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=d554b5e1ca64d23e4f839e6531490fee8479fbaf

nvme: Quirks for PM1725 controllers
PM1725 controllers have a couple of quirks that need to be handled in
the driver:

 - I/O queue depth must be limited to 64 entries on controllers that do
   not report MQES.

 - The host interface registers go offline briefly while resetting the
chip. Thus a delay is needed before checking whether the controller
   is ready.

Note that the admin queue depth is also limited to 64 on older versions
of this board. Since our NVME_AQ_DEPTH is now 32 that is no longer an
issue.

[Bug 1696558] [NEW] Enable CONFIG_SECURITY_DMESG_RESTRICT

2017-06-07 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Public bug reported:

There is a request to enable the following for linux-aws.

config SECURITY_DMESG_RESTRICT
bool "Restrict unprivileged access to the kernel syslog"
default n
help
This enforces restrictions on unprivileged users reading the kernel
  syslog via dmesg(8).

If this option is not selected, no restrictions will be enforced
unless the dmesg_restrict sysctl is explicitly set to (1).

If you are unsure how to answer this question, answer N.

[Bug 1683505] [NEW] enable CONFIG_CPU_SW_DOMAIN_PAN for raspi2/raspi3

2017-04-17 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Public bug reported:

Kees Cook is requesting the following be enabled for our Raspi2/3
enabled kernel:

config CPU_SW_DOMAIN_PAN
bool "Enable use of CPU domains to implement privileged no-access"
depends on MMU && !ARM_LPAE
default y

Increase kernel security by ensuring that normal kernel accesses
are unable to access userspace addresses. This can help prevent
use-after-free bugs becoming an exploitable privilege escalation
by ensuring that magic values (such as LIST_POISON) will always
  fault when dereferenced.

CPUs with low-vector mappings use a best-efforts implementation.
Their lower 1MB needs to remain accessible for the vectors, but
the remainder of userspace will become appropriately inaccessible.

[Bug 1673303] [NEW] [Xenial] net: better skb->sender_cpu and skb->napi_id cohabitation

2017-03-15 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Public bug reported:

== Xenial SRU ==
We've twice now tried to roll out new firewalls and twice had to
revert back when the new firewalls almost immediately hung after
cutover.

At first we thought it was hardware issues, but after we reproduced it
on 4 different firewalls, we realised it was more likely to be a
problem with the Xenial kernel.

We think we're running into something similar to:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1579943

And Joel thinks the following patch might fix it:

https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=52bd2d62ce6758d811edcbd2256eb9ea7f6a56cb

Unfortunately, even when we mimic live production traffic on the new
firewalls with port mirroring, we only have a ~20% success rate at
reproducing the kernel hang and I'm keen not to have any more failed
migration attempts (and the corresponding downtime for many many
services).

== Fix ==
See http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~ogasawara/lp1579943/

== Testing ==
We've just successfully migrated four firewalls
that are running with the patched kernel. Previously two of them would
have survived for less than 2 minutes, both have now been running in
production for over an hour.

I'll provide another update tomorrow, however at this stage I'd suggest
that it makes sense to get this into an SRU.

[Bug 1672850] [NEW] [MIR] linux-aws

2017-03-14 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Public bug reported:

We would like to request the linux-aws kernel package be promoted to
Main for 16.04.

[Availability]

The linux-aws kernel package is currently available in Universe for
16.04. It successfully builds against amd64 which is the target arch to
be supported.

[Rationale]

The plan is to switch the Ubuntu AMI’s to default to the linux-aws
kernel, which will have widespread impact for all newly deployed
instances in AWS. We, the Canonical Kernel Team, will stand behind and
fully support this kernel. It makes sense for this to be promoted to
Main.

[Security]

The linux-aws kernel is based on the stock linux v4.4 based GA Ubuntu
kernel available in 16.04. Linux-aws will naturally inherit all
existing security support and maintenance provided for the stock linux
v4.4 based GA Ubuntu kernel in 16.04. The linux kernel package is
already in Main.

[Quality assurance]

The linux-aws kernel will undergo the same 3 week kernel SRU process and
follow the same SRU requirements for proposed changes. This include bug
verification and Kernel SRU testing.

[Dependencies]

None

[Standards compliance]

The linux-aws kernel adheres to the same level of standards presented
for the existing linux Ubuntu kernel.

[Maintenance]

The Canonical Kernel Team (~canonical-kernel-team) will commit to full
security maintenance and support of linux-aws for the duration of the
16.04 LTS release.

[Background information]

See above.

[Bug 1663298] Re: Xubuntu 16.04.2 has no auto-resize installation option

2017-02-09 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Seeing the same for Kubuntu. On bare metal, I'd performed the "Install
(entire disk with lvm and encryption) in Kubuntu Desktop amd64"
which passed, but I then followed up performing the "Install (auto-
resize) in Kubuntu Desktop amd64"
. I'm also not seeing the "Install Kubuntu XX.XX alongside SYSTEM YY"
option, only seeing the "Guided - use entire disk..." options.
