[Bug 1727580] [NEW] ubuntu-bug segfaults when trying to report a bug using the PID of the offending process

2017-10-25 Thread Lee Revell
Public bug reported:

Docs say ubuntu-bug $PID should work. Tried it:

[leer@leer-eng: ~]$ ubuntu-bug 1392
Gtk-Message: GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is discouraged.

Popup window gave error that this process was owned by another user (it
was, the gdm user) and to run it as root or that user. Tried as root:

[leer@leer-eng: ~]$ sudo ubuntu-bug 1392
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyUnable to init server: Could not connect:
Connection refused
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyUnable to init server: Could not connect:

Segmentation fault (core dumped)

And that's all she wrote. Need I say more?

[Bug 1666964] [NEW] compiz makes thousands of system calls per second on an idle system

2017-02-22 Thread Lee Revell
Public bug reported:

Killed all running applications. strace the compiz process. grep the
resulting log for DRM_IOCTL system calls:

root@leer-eng:~# for f in `seq 13 24`; do echo `grep DRM_IOCTL strace.log5 |
grep 15:50:$f | wc -l` DRM ioctls per second; done
791 DRM ioctls per second
1171 DRM ioctls per second
13816 DRM ioctls per second
11770 DRM ioctls per second
7592 DRM ioctls per second
12990 DRM ioctls per second
8247 DRM ioctls per second
12551 DRM ioctls per second
3133 DRM ioctls per second
2878 DRM ioctls per second
1472 DRM ioctls per second
5 DRM ioctls per second

Up to 12990 system calls per second on system running an idle desktop is
insane. This has to be extremely bad for power usage.

Literally half the internet is broken. This is the longest I can
remember a showstopper bug going unfixed in the 10+ years I have been
using Ubuntu.

[Bug 1547557] [NEW] Low res icon is displayed by default when alt-tabbing

2016-02-19 Thread Lee Revell
Public bug reported:

I've configured my system to use the old alt-tab behavior like so, where
it simply cycles through windows and for each window displays an icon
rather than the window contents:

http://www.randomhacks.co.uk/how-change-ubuntu-unity-window-switcher-
back-to-old-style/

However when keepassx is running it displays a very ugly pixellated low
res icon. All other apps display a pretty high res icon.

I've discovered the root cause is that
/usr/share/keepassx/icons/keepassx_small.png is the icon being used.

If I simply overwrite this file with
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/128x128/apps/keepassx.png, I see a nice high
res icon when alt-tabbing.

[Bug 1545900] [NEW] When I go to unlock the screen after the system has auto-suspended, the contents of the desktop before suspend are briefly displayed

2016-02-15 Thread Lee Revell
Public bug reported:

When I hit the power button to wake my laptop after it has automatically
suspended, the contents of the screen before suspend are briefly
displayed before the password screen appears.

This is a security issue as an unauthenticated user can see the last
thing I was looking at before the system suspended.

[Bug 1446837] Re: kernel BUG at /build/buildd/linux-lts-utopic-3.16.0/fs/buffer.c:3029!

2015-05-26 Thread Lee Revell
I just realized that the console screencaps contain the service tag so I
have identified the correct machine.

However running apport-collect 1446837 just launches a text web
browser where I enter my launchpad login information, then I end up on a
screen that says:

Authorize application to access Launchpad on your behalf

Almost finished ...

The Ubuntu computer called vbo-ceph-node1 now has access to your
Launchpad account. Within a few seconds, you should be able to start
using its Launchpad integration features.

The integration you just authorized will expire in 59 minutes. At that
time, you'll have to re-authorize vbo-ceph-node1, if you want to keep
using its Launchpad integration features.

and it just sits there forever.

[Bug 1450053] Re: upgrade 14.04 to 15.04, mysql no longer starts on boot due to missing policykit-1

2015-05-20 Thread Lee Revell
Here is the output of the systemctl enable.

I am not sure I still have the strace output from when it was failing.
Are you saying you want the strace output now that I've got it to work?
Or to remove policykit-1 and try to reproduce in the original state?

[Bug 1427795] Re: the lock screen/log out window is stuck rendering desktop unusable

2015-05-18 Thread Lee Revell
After running into several other situations where one of these
logout/lock screen dialogs got wedged and I had to reboot, and after
losing all my work several times because the default ctrl-alt-del action
is to log out rather than lock the screen as it has been in Windows
forever, I just set ctrl-alt-del to lock the screen with no prompts or
dialogs. So I guess you can close this though I still think this area of
ubuntu is poorly implemented

Also missing are:

/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-
packages/nova/openstack/common/{log.py,importutils.py,jsonutils.py,strutils.py,timeutils.py}

Was there some major code refactoring that the the python-nova package
didn't pick up on?

[Bug 1450053] [NEW] upgrade 14.04 to 15.04, mysql no longer starts on boot due to missing policykit-1

2015-04-29 Thread Lee Revell
Public bug reported:

Upgrade 14.04 to 14.10 to 15.04 via do-release upgrade. Upon booting
15.04 mysql no longer starts on boot.

Trying to enable it gives:

# systemctl enable mysql.service
Synchronizing state for mysql.service with sysvinit using update-rc.d...
Executing /usr/sbin/update-rc.d mysql defaults
Executing /usr/sbin/update-rc.d mysql enable
Failed to execute operation: No such file or directory

strace revealed that the no such file or directory refers to
/usr/bin/pkttyagent which is in policykit-1 package.

apt-get install policykit-1 and without making any other changes, mysql
is back to working on boot.

There is a missing dependency on policykit-1 somewhere.

[Bug 1433774] [NEW] When double clicking an executable bash script in file manager, it opens in gedit rather than executing

2015-03-18 Thread Lee Revell
Public bug reported:

Download https://www.torproject.org/dist/torbrowser/4.0.4/tor-browser-
linux64-4.0.4_en-US.tar.xz and extract it to a folder.

Navigate to that folder in the GNOME file manager.

Double click start-tor-browser.

Expected result: The script executes and launches the browser.

Actual result: The script opens in gedit. Even when right clicking it,
Run is not listed as an option anywhere. It's not even an option under
Open With... - Other Application. The only way to run it is from a
terminal.

[Bug 1428151] [NEW] critical init scripts depend on plymouth!?!

2015-03-04 Thread Lee Revell
Public bug reported:

I removed a bunch of GUI stuff (using apt, not forcing anything) from
several virtual machines would use fewer resources. Afterwards service
apache2 start just hung. I discovered this is due to the init script
calling plymouth --ping which was hanging. The workaround was to set
loop=yes in /etc/default/rcS.

It is totally wrong for apache or any non-GUI, non-desktop related
service to depend on a graphical boot animation and logger to start
correctly!

[Bug 236264] Re: Evolution asks my pasword to unlock the default keyring since last update

2008-06-12 Thread Lee Revell
I had this problem and I do NOT have auto login enabled, I use a
password just like I always have.

How can this not be considered a bug? Installing routine package
updates on a stable distro should not cause bizarre, inexplicable
behavior that I have to search the forums to understand. I'm a senior
Linux admin for a large corporation; I've written driver code that's in
the 2.6 kernel. If I had to go to the forums and launchpad to resolve
this, how are normal users expected to react? You expect them to know
what a keyring is and how to manage them?

I understand the need for security but at least pop up a user friendly
message, like the one you get when an update requires a reboot or a
Firefox restart.

Yes, it fixes the problem. So we have two bugs: libnss3-0d was
incorrectly removed, and there is a missing dependency.

[Bug 236949] [NEW] Font sizes all wrong in Firefox and GDM at 1920x1080

2008-06-02 Thread Lee Revell
Public bug reported:

When using 1920x1080 resolution, the font sizes in Firefox and GDM are
all wrong. Some pages display OK, but on many others the fonts are
either way too small or way too big.

GDM has the problem (login/password are displayed in HUGE font) as well
as Firefox. Opera seems to behave sanely.

I have attached a screenshot of Launchpad which shows the problem.
Firefox renders it terribly, Opera does OK.

[Bug 236949] Re: Font sizes all wrong in Firefox and GDM at 1920x1080

2008-06-02 Thread Lee Revell
More info:

I tried setting DPI to 96 in gdm.conf. Now GDM fonts look great, but
Firefox fonts are way too small on some pages, like Launchpad. If I
zoom in twice with Ctrl-+ it looks perfect.

When I set DPI to 48 (which I confirmed is the actual DPI of the screen)
in gdm.conf, the Firefox Launchpad font looks the same as with 96DPI,
but now the GDM login font is tiny.

[Bug 232004] Re: qemu alsa support sucks

2008-05-19 Thread Lee Revell
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter
the problem

Launch qemu with QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=alsa set and sound support enabled, using
command line
QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=alsa qemu -kernel-kqemu -soundhw es1370 -m 1024
windows.img.

2. Expected behavior: sound works in the guest.

3. Encountered behavior: qemu spews alsa error messages to the console. In the
Windows XP guest, an es1370
soundcard is detected, and sounds appear to play, but the host does not
output any audio.

I can confirm this bug is still present in the 8.04 final release.

It's especially bad because Clear Private Data has no effect - all
history still appears in the location bar.

This should be considered a showstopper due to the privacy implications.

OK. If this is the case then it looks like a different bug (the
notorious old nm256 bug was that the system would reboot or lock up
hard when loading the module). This OTOH is a no sound bug...

Try un-blacklisting nm256 and see if that works...

[Bug 59403] Re: g-a-i postinst fails if X is not running

2006-09-19 Thread Lee Revell
OK. It works now, though I get a warning.

It still feels wrong and bloaty that an upgrade script would have
anything to do with a GUI... If it works without X, why try to use X at

[Bug 59403] Re: g-a-i postinst fails if X is not running

2006-09-16 Thread Lee Revell
All I do to trigger the bug is ssh -X to the machine I want to upgrade,
su, and run apt-get update apt-get upgrade.

Are you saying this is an unsupported upgrade method?

Why can't the application continue if it can't connect to X? This
should not be a fatal error.

Also, I think it's acceptable for gnome-app-install to create the cache
the first time it is run. Subsequent startups will still be fast.
Nautilus does the same thing - the first time you open a folder of
images it takes 60 seconds to display anything while it creates
caches...

[Bug 27014] Re: evolution bug, Summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync

2006-09-15 Thread Lee Revell
Well it really sounds like the problem is some kind of race or
inadequate serialization between mail reading/deleting and new mail
coming in. It seems that 5 years of bug reports should be enough even
if the developers cannot reproduce the problem.

All I do to reproduce the bug is have a POP3 account (leave mail on
server disabled) subscribed to 20-30 mailing lists including very high
volume ones like linux-kernel and just leave Evo open all the time and
use it normally, and the bug hits every week or so.

What additional information can I provide to help debug it?

[Bug 28403] Re: Error while Refreshing folder: Summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync

2006-09-13 Thread Lee Revell
I am afflicted by this bug several times a week, and the workaround is
no help for me.

Several seconds - ha! I have very large folders - after removing the
summary and restarting it takes 30-60 minutes to regenerate the indexes
and summaries. During this time I cannot receive any mail - it just
sits and spins Storing folder..., and eventually the progress bar
stops or Evolution crashes.

The only solution is to move the mbox files out of the way, restart Evo,
and manually re-import them.

Is anyone working on the root cause of this bug - aka preventing the
summary from getting corrupted in the first place?

What's the status of this severe bug? I get bit every few days. Is it
really so hard to prevent Evo from constantly corrupting my mail

Workaround is no solution for me - Evo hangs or crashes. I have to
manually move the corrupt mbox file out of the way and re-import it.

[Bug 50356] Re: file download: Automatic open setting not functional

Weird - that worked. IOW:

Expected result:
File to be open with gedit without a dialog prompting me.

Actual result:
File opens with gedit without a dialog prompting me.

;-)

But, I still have the problem with .torrent files - every time it wants
to open with gnome-btdownload, and I tell it not to prompt me again but
it does. So the bug is MIME type or app specific.

[Bug 50356] file download: Automatic open setting not functional

2006-06-19 Thread Lee Revell
Public bug reported:

With the Dapper version of Firefox, the Do this automatically for files
like this from now on checkbox in the file download dialog does not
work. Every time I go to download a file of that type, I still get the

[Bug 47706] Re: dapper does not include oss sound module: nm256_audio

2006-06-13 Thread Lee Revell
I don't have the bandwidth to fix it myself, but here's the patch. It
only touches the nm256 driver so should be trivial to apply.

http://hg-mirror.alsa-project.org/alsa-
kernel?cmd=changeset;node=40a6a0915a24;style=gitweb

Also why was the OSS driver removed from Dapper? AFAIK it was only
removed from the kernel after we had confirmation that the ALSA driver
was fixed.
