Just consider that linux is a block of systems functioning together depending on each other. One helping another. One fails the block fails. Sorry but I didn't say boot loader (grub). If I'm not mistaken a boot manager is a program running while booting your system and turns all services on (deamons, drivers, file systems etc...) and then directs you to the log-in screen where you type you username and password and the log-in to your system. As I read, this package was changed and the old one used in Dapper was left behind. No, it seems that it was the boot manager that created all this situation. Well actually I mean the splash screen. And I get the black screen before logging. Actually I can't even log in. The login screen doesn't appear at all... (When that's happen does pressing ctrl-alt-f1 and then ctrl-alt-f7 fixes the issue?) I think I already said which version I use (look closely, Ubuntu 6.06 [Dapper Drake] LTS). Anyway, the black screen appears after the loading of the necessary files completes. You know after the Ubuntu Logo dissappears. In other words sometimes I get a black screen, where I can do nothing, instead of the login screen. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: login Hi, I have been using Ubuntu 6.06 LTS for a long time. I have to admit that it is a really good linux distro except one thing that keeps annoying me all the time. When I boot my system and select ubuntu-. to boot, after the Ubuntu Logo dissappears and the loading process completes, sometime (not always) the login screen doesn't appear and instead I get a black screen where I can do nothing.
