I do not understand why this is marked as duplicate of bug #75031.

bug #75031 is about the mysql init.d script choking on a poorly set
GREP_OPTION.

bug #67141 (this bug) is about a system-wide policy to unset GREP_OPTION
by default.

if ubuntu has no interest in setting up a system-wide policy then mark
this bug as WONTFIX. marking this as duplicate makes no sense.

[Bug 273490] Re: Totem-plugin-viewer shows visual effects even disabled.

2011-06-15 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
I do not understand why gnome-bugs #542491 is marked as fixed. They
"fixed" the bug by having the plugin disable visual effects if the
widget size is under 150 pixels. It is sensible to disable visual
effects for a widget under 150 pixels, but it does not fix the bug when
there still is no option to disable visual effects at will.

I think this bug should be reopened. Here, as well as in gnome-bugs.

Workaround is to right click and select "open in movieplayer".
Alternatively, if the totem plugin is playing "full-screen" in the
browser, then you can resize the browser to under 150 pixels tall, the
width seems to have no effect.

[Bug 622066] [NEW] glob .* should expand to every file beginning with . but should leave out . and ..

2010-08-21 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash

the glob * expands to everything which does not begins with a dot
the glob .* expands to everything beginning with a dot, including . and ..

i think it is safe to say that in 99% of the cases, when someone uses
the glob .* they want to have every hidden file and directory but not .
and ..

rm -rf * #deletes everything but leaves hidden files and directories
rm -rf * .* #dangerous! also deletes everything from upper directory

that is why i think glob .* should expand to every file beginning with .
but should leave out . and .. by default.

workaround:

export GLOBIGNORE=.:..

setting GLOBIGNORE will automatically enable dotglob, which might not be
what you want. if that is the case then you must disable dotglob again.

shopt -u dotglob

this will cause * to expand to every file and directory but not hidden files
and directories
and .* will expand to every hidden file and directory but not . and ..

[Bug 619010] [NEW] feature request: commands to easily manipulate $PATH

2010-08-16 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash

adding directories to $PATH is a very common task. it is desirable to
only add a directory to $PATH if it is not already there. sadly that is
quite hard to do. removing directories from $PATH is not as common but
at least as hard.

i think bash should have commands to add directories uniquely to $PATH
and remove from $PATH

for example:
path_append ()  { path_remove $1; export PATH="$PATH:$1"; }
path_prepend () { path_remove $1; export PATH="$1:$PATH"; }
path_remove ()  { export PATH=`echo -n $PATH | awk -v RS=: -v ORS=: '$0 !=
"'$1'"' | sed 's/:$//'`; }

from http://stackoverflow.com/questions/370047/what-is-the-most-elegant-
way-to-remove-a-path-from-the-path-variable-in-bash

[Bug 596020] [NEW] feature request: "disengaged" or "full-speed" level

defeats the purpose).

[Bug 318678] Re: BASH_SOURCE is not correct

2010-06-04 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
yes you are absolutely right. now that i read the text for BASH_LINENO i
see that the text for BASH_SOURCE (and BASH_LINENO) is quite vague.
thank you for your effort to describe this so clearly.

i agree with you that the wording in the manual should be updated.

i now also agree with your point in your original bug description that
BASH_SOURCE should show the filename from where the function is called
so that it is consistent with BASH_LINENO.

now about this bug:
i am sure that the actual behaviour of BASH_SOURCE will NEVER be changed,
because that would break many many scripts out there. so i suggest that we keep
this bug invalid and you open a new bug, referring this bug and requesting the
rewording for the appropriate sections in the bash manual.

note: there is a typo in your text in the section for BASH_LINENO. the
second "where" should be "were"

+ The problem is that each new command is saved again even if that command

[Bug 589460] [NEW] questionable comments for HISTCONTROL in /etc/skel/.bashrc

2010-06-03 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash

using lucid with bash 4.1-2ubuntu3

as a followup to bug #465500

the lines in question now read:
# don't put duplicate lines in the history. See bash(1) for more options
# ... or force ignoredups and ignorespace
HISTCONTROL=ignoredups:ignorespace

the second line doesn't make any sense. it starts with "or", as opposed
to what? it says "force", what does it force?

i find this wording (adapted from the description of bug #465500) much better:
# don't put duplicate lines or lines starting with space in the history.
# See bash(1) for more information
HISTCONTROL=ignoreboth

[Bug 318678] Re: BASH_SOURCE is not correct

2010-06-03 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
the bash manual says that BASH_SOURCE shows filename where a function is
defined (and not the filename from where the function is called).

http://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/html_node/Bash-Variables.html
#index-BASH_005fSOURCE-174

as Barre said in comment #2 you can check the filename from where the
function is called by checking index 1 in the array. the array is
ordered after FUNCNAME which is a call stack of bash functions. look for
FUNCNAME in the bash manual page linked above.

marking as invalid.

[Bug 487613] Re: "history -c" doesn't clear bash history

2010-06-03 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
i think this bug is invalid.

history -c is behaving as intended: it clears the history of the current
session. if you want to have the history completely removed then you
have to make sure the history file is also cleared. to be really sure
you will also have to clear the history of any other running bash
sessions. note that there are many different ways to manipulate how bash
handles the history in memory and the history file. i recommend to read
the bash manual about history.

here is the section about the history command
http://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/html_node/Bash-History-Builtins.html

the bash manual is a bit vague about the concept of the history. it
should state more clearly that at any given time there are at least two
instances of the history: one is the history kept in the memory of the
currently running bash session, the other is the history kept in the
history file (usually ~/.bash_history or whatever is defined in the
variable $HISTFILE).

in case of the history command some options manipulate the history file,
while the other options (including the option -c) only manipulates the
history which is kept in the memory of the currently running session.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 549552 ***

i don't think that this bug is invalid. the option says solid color but
it does not give solid color. that is a bug. the fix is either to make
the option really do solid color, or to relabel to option to say "use
transparency setting from system theme".

anyway, i marked this bug duplicate of #549552 where they already
discussed this.

[Bug 245940] Re: command "grep" or redirection going in a loop.

2010-03-19 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
i think this would be the upstream bug (note: the comments are sorted
newest first): http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?17457

strangely the mailing list thread for this bug goes longer than the
actual bug: report http://www.mail-archive.com/bug-
g...@gnu.org/msg00770.html

bottom line seems to be that this behaviour is by design (it's not a
bug, it's a feature). when you redirect the results of grep into a file,
and grep comes around to look at that file, then grep will find
occurences infinitely. why this does not occur all the time seems to be
a side effect of some buffers.

@Vaneet Dadra
you can prevent the infinite loop by redirecting the results to a file outside
or above the tree you are grepping:
$ grep MAX -r somedirectory > ../somefile

[Bug 540740] [NEW] wajig installfoo gives misleading error message

2010-03-18 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wajig

using ubuntu karmic
wajig version 2.0.43

$ wajig install
wajig: Error: INSTALL requires a list of packages, .deb files, or url

$ wajig installlolcats
wajig: Error: INSTALLLOLCATS requires a list of packages, .deb files, or url

this error message is misleading because it gives the impression that
INSTALLLOLCATS is a valid command

compare this with following behaviour

$ wajig detail
wajig: Error: DETAIL requires a list of packages or package file

$ wajig detaillollerskates

[Bug 540733] Re: GREP_OPTIONS breaks wajig

2010-03-18 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
argh. the output is garbled by non-fixed-width fonts :(

let me attach a textfile.

the error is visible in the last line:
* the package name is "5594:grep" (5594 must be the line number of the output
which wajig greped)
* the installed version is N/A although grep is installed
* the remaining columns are very likely shifted to the right by one or something

[Bug 540692] [NEW] "unmount partitions that are in use?" dialog is confusing

2010-03-17 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

using karmic livecd.

the dialog text goes like this:

The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions:

/dev/sda

Do you want the installer to try to unmount the partitions on these
disks before continuing? If you leave them mounted, you will not be
able to create, delete, or resize partitions on these disks, but you may
be able to install to existing partitions there.

(buttons at the end are "No" and "Yes")

this text is confusing. by the time i got to the yes and no buttons i
was surprised because i no longer have a question in my mind. the last
thing i had in mind was an explanation about what i will not be able to
do to certain partitions, why do i need yes or no for that?

i think this wording is better

The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions:

resize partitions on these disks, but you may be able to install to
existing partitions there. Do you want the installer to try to unmount

[Bug 289023] Re: Wheel emulation doesn't work after suspend/resume

2009-04-19 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
i too am affected by this bug. i have a thinkpad x40. i made fdi files
similar to comment #4. for me this bug doesn't happen at every
suspend/resume, it happends about once in five suspen/resume cycles.

there is a workaround and maybe also fix for this problem in thinkwiki:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_configure_the_TrackPoint

here the text from thinkwiki

Scrolling may be disabled after a resume from suspend.

You can manually reactivate the trackpoint by reloading the psmouse
module as root:

# rmmod psmouse && modprobe psmouse

You can automatically force the pm-utils to reload this module. Create a
file /etc/pm/config.d/01reload_mouse as root with the following content:

# reload psmouse to reactivate trackpoint scrolling
SUSPEND_MODULES="${SUSPEND_MODULES:+$SUSPEND_MODULES }psmouse"

[Bug 306591] Re: Locale settings in shell initialization not used by GNOME session

2009-04-10 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
i think the original bug report is not a bug because gnome should not
read the shell initialization files.

gnome (gdm) reads the .profile (see /etc/gdm/Xsession) so any LC_*
settings is best put there. see also my anser at

[Bug 356371] [NEW] java control panel does not respect LC_MESSAGES

2009-04-06 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
Public bug reported:

following command line will start java control panel in german

$ LANG=de_DE.utf8 LC_MESSAGES=en_US.utf8
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.10/bin/ControlPanel

expected behaviour is to start java control panel in english. i tested
some other combination of LANG and LC_MESSAGES and it seems java control
panel only checks for LANG and ignores LC_MESSAGES. i didn't test any
other LC_* variables.

for example of a correct behaviour: this command line will start gedit
in english, but when you insert date (edit > insert date and time) it
will be in german format

$ LANG=de_DE.utf8 LC_MESSAGES=en_US.utf8 gedit

[Bug 305269] Re: Need LVDSout quirk for 8086:3582

2009-02-11 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
i tried the 2.6.99.1 driver using the ubuntu 9.04 alpha 4 live cd. i was
not able to install the 2.6.99.1 driver under ubuntu 8.10 because of the
dependencies.

to be exact, i used following command: dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-
intel_2.6.99.1+git20090207.3aa8591a-0ubuntu0tormod2_i386.deb

the 2.6.1 driver shipped with the alpha 4 live cd was working fine
(although still with the 1024x768 problem). the 2.6.99 driver showed the
same problem as in my original report, the entire display showed the
color of one pixel. perhaps this is because of the integrated LVDS quirk
in the 2.6.1 driver?

i tried the quirk and now i see a proper image, but first to my system
setup.

the system is a not a notebook but not a common desktop either.
mainboard is a mb890 (link http://www.ibase-i.com.tw/mb890.htm ). the
mainboard has three video outputs: VGA, DVI and LVDS. my monitor is
connected to the DVI output. monitor is an IBM ThinkVision L200p. other
video outputs are not connected to anything, as far as i can tell.

my xorg.conf was already a "minimal" xorg.conf (as created by dpkg-
reconfigure), so renaming xorg.conf and restarting x didn't change the
behaviour. i then tried the quirk and added the LVDS ignore lines in
xorg.conf and now i have a proper image, but the resolution is limited
to 1024x768. the monitor is able to go up to 1600x1200.

should i post a new "Need LVDSout quirk for "
bug as suggested in the wiki? i do see a proper image now but the
resolution is still not correct. i'm sure it would be possible to force
xorg to 1600x1200 using appropriate xorg.conf lines, but it would be
better if the driver did it right automatically.

[Bug 305269] [NEW] [855gm] entire display shows color of certain pixel

2008-12-04 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

since i upgraded to ubuntu 8.10 my entire display shows just one color
(under gdm and under x). i asume it is the color value of a certain
pixel because when i move the mouse in a certain spot it will switch
color from black to white to brown. aside from the display problem
everything else is working fine. i can login, i can start applications
(using the alt+f2 tool), i can switch to the virtual console and see the
applications i started using ps. i made a screenshot using scrot, the
image is showing a normal desktop with a resolution of 1024x768 (monitor
should show 1600x1200).

using ubuntu 8.10 and xserver-xorg-video-intel version
2:2.4.1-1ubuntu10.1

[Bug 77215] x server crashes after loading xkb keymap

2007-01-03 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

i was playing around with xkb, it was working fine until i made this
specific keymap, which will reliably crash my x server.

steps to reproduce
1. start another x server from a virtual console "startx -- :1"
2. load keymap using "xkbcomp keymap.xkb :1.0"
3. watch x crash

note that if using :0.0 instead of :1.0 it will crash :0.0.

i will upload the keymap and the x.log file shortly

using ubuntu 6.06

[Bug 74460] Re: does not delete menu entry if removed

2006-12-05 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
i tried what you suggested. the menu entries are now gone. it seems that
i did some time ago changed the menu entries from pioneers. thanks and
sorry for the hassle.

previously i searched /usr for pioneers and found these

$ find /usr/ -iname "pioneers*"
/usr/share/app-install/desktop/pioneers-server.desktop
/usr/share/app-install/desktop/pioneers.desktop
/usr/share/app-install/icons/pioneers-server.png
/usr/share/app-install/icons/pioneers.png

i thought those are the menu entries which have not been removed. but
that directory seems to be a general repository of all menu entries for
ubuntu supported applications.

[Bug 57767] Re: display is garbled on intel 855gm

2006-08-26 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
oops, i clicked on that button in the notification at the top, which
said that the bug is not in the xorg package, and it put xorg back in
the list without asking for confirmation. i am sorry for the troubles
caused, i am not trying to be pedantic or something.

i must add that i also tried the vesa driver in xorg.conf and it showed
the same garble. so the problem is not limited to the i810 driver.

[Bug 57767] Re: display is garbled on intel 855gm

2006-08-25 Thread Lesmana Zimmer
everytime i switch to text console using ctrl+alt+f1 and back to gui i
get another type of garble, i counted up to 4 different garble types.
this photo shows the least garbled garble. all other garble types are
garbled beyond recognition. sometimes even the text console will garble
a bit.

note that when i take a screenshot using the printscreen key it will
show ok.
