[Bug 658974] Re: "Blank CD" terminology is potentially confusing

2011-07-26 Thread Liam O'Reilly
This is still the case even with the most recent version 11.04 of
Ubuntu.

The disk is not blanked, it is simply overwritten. Overwriting a disk is
usually never needed and reduces the lifespan of the disk. This is a
simple bug to fix and all that needs changing is the wording on the GUI.
The words "Blank Disk" should be changed to something more appropriate
like "Overwrite Disk" this will give the correct impression of what is
about to happen and would assume me that the lifespan of the disk is not
being unnecessarily wasted. I would almost consider this a paper cut
bug.

Thanks
Liam

[Bug 658974] Re: "Blank CD" terminology is potentially confusing

2011-01-06 Thread Liam O'Reilly
I believe it should say "overwrite disk". Blanking a disk means to make
it blank and reset all the bits - this does not happen if this button is
clicked. The disk is not blanked and then written to, it is simply
overwritten in a single pass.

[Bug 620733] Re: Empathy does not remember settings

2010-10-20 Thread Liam O'Reilly
I have a very similar problem, but I get different error messages.
Empathy will not retain the settings after a relaunch.

I get the following errors when launching empathy from the command line:
** (empathy:): CRITICAL **: Unable to contact dconf service

My home directory is mounted via NFS and I think the problem steams from
there or this error is not the problem and I am suffering the exact same
problem as in this thread. However installing libdconf0 did not solve
the problem.

On my other two computers (not using NFS) empathy worked perfectly out
of the box after a fresh install.

[Bug 598064] [NEW] Eye of Gnome print dialog does not allow change of orientation

2010-06-24 Thread Liam O'Reilly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

The Eye of Gnome program (default image viewer in Ubuntu) has a "Print"
dialog with a "Page Setup" page which contains a greyed out orientation
option (along with greyed out paper size options and others). These
options are available (and can be changed) under the "Page Setup" dialog
from the "File" menu. However it is very unintuitive to have these
options disabled in the "Page Setup" page of the "Print" dialog
available from the "File" menu. This is a usability bug.

Evince recently has the same issue and corrected it under the bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/480895

This is 100% reproducible on Lucid with Eye of GNOME version 2.30.0
(package version 2.30.0-0ubuntu1).

Step to reproduce:
1. Open an image (say a JPEG) in Eye of Gnome by double clicking on the image
file (or explicitly with Eye of Gnome).
2. Click File -> Page Setup. Here you can see the enabled options to change the
page orientation (and other settings such as paper size). Do not change
anything here, just notice the options are available then close the "Page
Setup" dialog box.
3. Click File -> Print. In the dialog box that appears click the "Page Setup"
page. In this page you can see the same options as in the other dialog box (in
step 2) but they are disabled.

I expect in step 3 that these options are available and can be changed
in the "Page Setup" page of the "Print" dialog.

This can be confusing and users may think you cannot change the
orientation if the user did not notice the "Page Setup" option under the
"File" menu.

I personally think this should be considered a paper cut as it should be
easy to fix.

[Bug 322314] Re: "Automatically connect on startup" setting confusing - users may expect this to run Empathy on login

2010-05-01 Thread Liam O'Reilly
In order for Ubuntu to be consistent (regarding Empathy and Gwibber),
Empathy needs a "Start service at logon" option in preferences which
actually starts Empathy at user logon. This would make Empathy behave
and have the same options as Gwibber. These two applications are about
communications and work in very similar ways. It makes sense for the
GUIs to have the same (or similar) options.

[Bug 336272] Re: Missing suspend button

2009-12-09 Thread Liam O'Reilly
I have tested this bug with Karmic (release version) with the following results:
-> With BIOS set to "S1(POS)" the suspend option in the user switch applet does
appear. When clicked the screensaver activates (and runs). I don't know if the
system has suspended to S1(POS) state? As the CPU is supposed to be stopped and
not executing instructions and the screen saver is running, I guess the suspend
failed.

Also under S1(POS) the command
pm-is-supported --suspend || echo "Not supported"
produced "Not Supported" (but the suspend entry is in the user switch applet's
menu). Under other settings (S3 STR and AUTO) this command produces nothing.

I have a (what I believe is a) related bug at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-media/+bug/426788 to do
with how the new sound preferences GUI works. The GUI may be fine and
the driver for the sound card _might_ be at fault.

I also find this. Normal sized flash video are fine. Fullscreen starts

2009-09-09 Thread Liam O'Reilly
Dear Sebastien Bacher,

I understand what you say and the reasons , but all these slider
problems seem related to me, can't they go in a separate bug. I see the
issue with totem/rhythum box clashing (I agree that should be in a new
bug), but I feel the problems with sliders moving other sliders should
be in one bug. Or would it really be best If I report 10 or 11 different
bugs.

[Bug 426788] Re: New sound preferences GUI has many problems

2009-09-09 Thread Liam O'Reilly
** Description changed:

I have a K8N Neo 4 Platinum motherboard which has a built in Sound
Blaster live 24 bit sound card. Product can be viewed at
  http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo4_Platinum/SLI.

When trying Karmic Alpha 5 64 bit version I found many problems with the
new GUI of the "Sound Preferences".

I have also filled the bug
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/303679 which may be
fixed if this is fixed as they over lap a little.

First some general information about my setup. In sound preferences
under hardware the device is listed as "CA0106" and I am using the
profile "Analog Surround 5.1 Output" - as I have 5.1 Surround Sound
setup. Under the output tab the device is listed as "Analog Surround 5.1
   Surround 5.1"

I will now list the problems with the GUI.
  Problems under the "Output" tab:
  1) The "balance" slider seems to work, moving the slider seems to change the
balance between left and right, but I am not convinced this is done perfectly.
  2) The "fade" slider. This does not work at all. If I pull the slider first
towards "rear" then nothing happens, If I first pull the slider towards "front"
then the volume decreases and becomes mute at the extreme "front". Once muted
this way moving the fade slider has no audio-able effect on the sound (i.e it
does not unmute) most of the time, some times it does unmute - seemingly at
random. Moving the "output" slider restores the volume if the fade slider is
not on the extreme "front".
  3) The "sub-woofer" slider seems to affect volume (not sub-woofer volume, but
overall volume), also see point 4 for side effects.
  4) When moving the "sub-woofer" slider, the "output" slider also moved.
  5) When moving the "fade" slider, nothing nothing else moves (this is correct
behavior and all other sliders should behave the same I guess).
  6) When moving the "balance" slider, the "fade" slider wobbles back and forth.
  7) When moving the "output" slider, the "sub-woofer" slider moves.
  8) If the "output" slider is set to the extreme left (zero) then the "fade"
and "sub-woofer" sliders become centered again.

  Problems under the "Applications" tab:
I had totem playing while trying experimenting and found the problems below.

  9) Moving the "output" slider moves the "totem" slider
  10) The "totem" slider is always lower than the "output" slider, thus moving
the "totem" slider higher than the "output" slider causes the "output" slider
to be increased.

I strong believe the application sliders should not move when the
"output" slider is moved, the current behavior is very confusing. If I
- set the totem "slider" to center then I would expect that this means
+ set the "totem" slider to center then I would expect that this means
totem will be at a volume which is 50% of the "output" volume. Moving
the output volume would not adjust the "totem" slider, but would make
totem quieter/louder as totem is always 50% volume of the "output"
  slider.

Other problems that have been introduced in Karmic (not to do necessarily
with the new GUI) are:
I have tried playing Aesop's Fable - The fox and the grapes on totem and
Invocation.ogg on rythumbox. Separately (both applications open, but one
paused) the sound is perfect, but together I get a cracking mess of a sound. I
have tied this with totem set to streo and 5.1 surround sound output, both
settings yield the same behavior.

I think a video would demonstrate this better, If some one could suggest
and easy way to capture my screen in video then I would be happy to
upload that so people could see the problem rather than read about it
  and imagine it.

Due to these problem I will not be able to setup my system like I have
it setup currently in Intrepid, unless I mess with config files (which I
really don't want to do and should not have to)

[Bug 303679] Re: Creative Labs CA0106 Soundblaster SB Audigy LS [1102:0007] is not properly supported

2009-09-09 Thread Liam O'Reilly
Hi,

I have filed a new bug under
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/426788 , where the new sound
preference gui of karmic has many problems. Fixing all these problems
will probably fix this bug as the GUI has changed so much from Ubuntu
8.10 to 9.04 that the channels seem to be abstracted away.

I will continue to help fill in this bug report though. I will not have
Internet access at my home (where the pc is) for a few weeks. So I can
not run the apport-collect command above - unless this can be done off
line and manually uploaded on a different pc. I will do this as soon as
possible once my Internet connection is up.

[Bug 412907] Re: X crashes and system is only responsive via sys-req on keyboard

2009-08-24 Thread Liam O'Reilly
Dear MrAuer, unfortunately, you should open a new bug report. Since I
have disabled UXA then my Jaunty system seems to be fine - that is there
have been no more crashes yet. I have been using the alpha 4 of Karmic
at the moment to see if my bug is present there - as I feel finding it
there is more important that finding if UXA was the problem on Jaunty.
So far Karmic seems to be fine, with my bug not appearing. I think this
bug can be marked as invalid, unless I find an occurrence of this on
Jaunty with no UXA or Karmic.

[Bug 412907] Re: X crashes and system is only responsive via sys-req on keyboard

2009-08-19 Thread Liam O'Reilly
I noticed a vital clue which I missed before.

My mouse is responsive, but no clicks are registered (as if I never
clicked), I can move the mouse around the screen. The keyboard is
unresponsive apart from sys-req. I did not think to check the caps lock
led. I will do this next time the crash happens.

Here is what I think is a full backtrace (I don't really know what one
of these should look like). I followed the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing). I found Xorg's pid then started
gdb, attached to xorg's pid and run the gdb command "backtrace full".

I hope this helps. If not then please let me know how I can help more.

Here is the dmesg report that I promised above (a little late, but here

cannot reproduce the problem. It happens at least once a day, but I have
no idea what triggers it. It seems to happen a lot when I interface with
Firefox, but this could be coincidence as I use Firefox often.

I will now try to do my daily work on a Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit Alpha 4 live

[Bug 414472] [NEW] Sound Blaster Live 24 bit sound card not detected

2009-08-16 Thread Liam O'Reilly
Public bug reported:

I have a K8N Neo 4 Platinum motherboard which has a built in Sound
Blaster live 24 bit sound card. Product can be viewed at
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo4_Platinum/SLI.

In 9.04 my sound works perfectly except for 1 bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/303679). It shows
up as ca0106.

I have just tried 9.10 alpha 4 (64 bit) via the live cd and I can not
get the sound to work at all.

Under the new sound configuration GUI. The detected hardware list is
empty. My sound card is not detected and thus all output is going to a
null device.

My sound card is onboard and is a Sound Blaster Live 24bit (see link

I will attach a report of dmesg after a reboot of the crash (that I

This crash seems to happen more the more graphic intensive applications

seems to happen a lot when opening Firefox, but that may just be because
I open Firefox a lot. I have no way of forcing a crash.

2009-08-13 Thread Liam O'Reilly
Public bug reported:

I have tried to report this bug at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/341363 where I was
told to report a separate bug.

I am running Jaunty (fully up-to-date as of 13th July 2009) 64 bit version. My
kern.log file shows alot of
[drm:i915_getparam] *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6
messages just before my system crashes.

My system is crashing in this way (on average) at least once a day at
the moment. I believe these messages in the kern.log file are the last
messages produced before such a crash.

When such a crash happens the graphics system is totally unresponsive,
alt-ctr-backspace twice does not restart x (dont-zap disabled). When I
try to get to a virtual terminal say Ctr-F1 - nothing happens. I can use
sys-req to restart the system. I can ssh in to the machine and sound etc
still works. Trying to restart gdm via /etc/init.d/gdm restart fails. In
the end I restart using sys-req.

This bug is making Ubuntu totally unusable right now. I am pretty sure
it due to the Intel graphic driver. I will attach logs of various
command in the next posts.

[Bug 408118] [NEW] Removing kubuntu-desktop leaves all (automatically install) dependencies installed

2009-08-02 Thread Liam O'Reilly
Public bug reported:

Starting with an Ubuntu system you install kubuntu-dekstop, e.g., using
the command

sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop

you then try out kde and decide you wish to uninstall it, so you try
removing what you installed, i.e., you use the command

sudo aptitude remove kubuntu-desktop

or even maybe a purge command, i.e.,

sudo aptitude purge kubuntu-desktop

You would expect that the system returns to the same state ( as in the
same installed packages) as before you ran the install command. Instead
however only the meta package kubunut-dektop is removed, all the
automatically installed dependencies of kubuntu-desktop remain.

kubunut-desktop is a convent way to install Kubuntu from a standard
Ubuntu installation. It should also be a convenient way to remove
Kubuntu and revert back to Ubuntu.

To reproduce this problem start with a fresh install of ubuntu, issue the
command
sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop
then
sudo aptitude remove kubuntu-desktop
notice that only the single meta package kubunut-desktop is removed and all the
dependencies remain.

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit version with kubuntu-dektop package
version 1.122.

[Bug 336272] Re: Missing suspend button

2009-07-13 Thread Liam O'Reilly
I have tried to reproduce the problem on 9.10 64 bit version Alpha 2.

With the BIOS setting "ACPI Standby State" set to "S1(POS)" the suspend
button now appears correctly. However when clicked, the screen fades to
black, then abruptly changes back to the working desktop. Suspend fails.
This fading and coming back takes approximately 3 seconds. I could not
find any significant information in the log files, however I did not
know what to look for or where I was looking.

With regards to the behaviour with the BIOS setting "ACPI Standby State"
being set to "S3(STR)" or "Auto", both have the same behaviour. That is,
the screen fades to black and suspends, what looks to be correctly.
However, does not resume. My current install (8.10 64 bit version)
allows me to resume from keyboard, the live CD did not. When pressing
the power button on my case to initiate the resume, the screen lit to a
black, the CD spun up and looked like it was being accessed via a
blinking led on the CD drive. This blinking lasted about 10 seconds then
the led on the cd drive did not blink any more. I wait about 2 minutes,
no change - just a blank screen. Alt-ctr-del just made the system beep.
Sys-req allowed me to restart.

I have a Nvidia graphic (Geforce 6600GT) card which needs proprietary
drivers to work correctly, and awireless card with a broadcom chipset
that needs firmware downloaded via jockey. This may have caused some
trouble with the suspend/resume as the live cd can not be used to
install these properitory pieces of software (or I don't know how to do
this).

Also the hibernate button has disappeared. I assume this is because I
was using the live CD.

I am unable to install a development version at the moment. I could free
up a hard disk somewhere, but this will take me a lot of time, which I
simply don't have at the moment. I will be able to try a real install of
Alpha 3 I guess.

Restart also failed(when tried with "S1(POS)" - I used a forced restart
with the other settings), but I guess this is another story and a new
bug report to file.

[Bug 336272] Re: Missing suspend button

2009-07-13 Thread Liam O'Reilly
I have quickly investegated my BIOS settings. Under power management there is a
field "ACPI Standby State" with options:
-> S1 (POS)
-> S3 (STR)
-> Auto

The option that was selected was S1. With option S3 or Auto selected
then the suspend button correctly appears and the system correctly
works. With option S1 selected then the suspend button is not displayed.

According to Wikipedia. The state S1 means "All processor caches are
flushed, and the CPU(s) stop executing instructions. Power to the CPU(s)
and RAM is maintained; devices that do not indicate they must remain on
may be powered down". Shouldn't Ubuntu (or Linux in general) support
this (less energy saving) version of suspend?

[Bug 335567] Re: jockey-backend crashed with IOError: [Errno 19] No such device

2009-03-14 Thread Liam O'Reilly
I think there is somehting broken. The Nvidia's settings application
displays my monitor (SyncMaster 913N) correctly, while the normal gnome
application does not. I am unstable in the gnome application to rotate
my screen. Thus options are missing and the monitor was not detected
correctly. I should still be able to use the gnome application even if
the Nvidia application allows me to configure more.

[Bug 335567] Re: jockey-backend crashed with IOError: [Errno 19] No such device

2009-03-14 Thread Liam O'Reilly
Dear Eylem, if you are correct and I am now supposed to use the Nivida
application to configure things then the dialog box definitely needs to
communicate a message that does not suggest something is wrong. I have a
few questions and points though. 1) Can the Nividia GUI configure
rotation and duel head as easily as the normal GUI (I prefer using
xrandr - but normal people will not). 2) I believe the normal GUI is
much easier to use than the Nvidia one, and most people will not want
that many options (don't take it away - I just think they would prefer
the normal GUI as it is less complex)

Somehow jockey worked the last time I tried it and now my graphics are
working ok. Although my sound is very buggy (filing bugs now). The
previous alpha worked well, this one does not.

[Bug 335567] Re: jockey-backend crashed with IOError: [Errno 19] No such device

2009-03-14 Thread Liam O'Reilly
I can also confirm with Jaunty Alpha 6, 64bit. Happened while or just
after installing Nvidia 180 propriety drivers. Also after these drivers
are installed the "Display" application states "It apears that your
graphic driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this
tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?
[No][Yes]". If I choose no then the drop down box with the resolutions
is missing many resolutions for my graphic card / monitor setup
including the optimal 1280x1024 (I think this is the optimal - cant
quite remember). The best in the list is 640x480.

This work perfectly for me in Intrepid. This is a very big problem for
me and will prevent me from upgrading to Jaunty if it is not resolved.

[Bug 296451] Re: gnome-power-manager needs several minutes to load at startup

2008-12-20 Thread Liam O'Reilly
I can confirm that this behaviour is also present on my Acer Aspire 5633
WLMi Laptop. I can also confirm that unchecking "Reduce backlight
brightness" and "Dim display when idle" under the battery tab in the
Power Management Preferences causes the power system to behave normally.

[Bug 303679] [NEW] Sound - Master channel missing on sound blaster live 24bit

2008-11-30 Thread Liam O'Reilly
Public bug reported:

I have a K8N Neo 4 Platinum motherboard which has a built in Sound
Blaster live 24 bit sound card. Product can be viewed at
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo4_Platinum/SLI.

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex). I have all the correct sound
channels available with the exception of the "mater channel". The sound
card is a 7.1 surround card that worked properly with surround sound
when configured differently from the default settings in Ubuntu.

I believe there should be a master channel. There was a working master
channel in a previous version of Ubuntu (Gutsy I think). I have not used
Ubuntu on this computer for a while as hardware support was too bad to
use it as a production environment. Now however, things have improved
and hardware support is much better, only my sound card is not working
perfectly with regards to the master channel.

When I open the volume control I can see the following:
-> 9 "playback" channels: ICE958 Center/LFE, ICE958 Front, ICE958 Rear, ICE958
Unknown, Analog Center/LFE Analog Front, Analog Rear, Analog Side and CAPTURE
feedback.
-> 4 recording channels: Line in, Microphone, Phone, Aux
-> 1 Switch:  IEC958
-> 4 options: IEC958, Analog Source, Digital Source, Shared Line in / Side out

The volume control state the device as CA0106 (Alsa Mixer)

I believe there should be a channel called Master (or similar").

[Bug 279845] [NEW] nautilus' trash view displays items in trash, but option to empty trash is greyed out. Trash applet acts correctly

2008-10-07 Thread Liam O'Reilly
Public bug reported:

I have deleted some files. So there are items in the trash.
Nautilus' trash view displays these items. However File->"Empty Deleted Items"
is greyed out, also the highlighted coloured bar in the window has a greyed out
"Empty Deleted Items" button. These options should not be greyed out and should
be available as there are items in the trash. See attached screen dump .

The trash applet has the "Empty the Deleted Items folder" available and
the correct icons.

I do not know how I have got to this state, but I have only placed items
in the trash by deleting them through Nautilus.

Every time I open the Nautilus' trash view, the options are greyed out.

Now I will empty the trash using the applet. The items are now
permanently deleted. Nautilus is now correctly greying out the options.
I now create a file and delete It. If I know open the trash view in
Nautilus then the options are greyed out when they should not be.

This is currently reproducible for me.

I am using Ubuntu - Hardy

output of lsb_release -rd:
Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

[Bug 272074] [NEW] The panels are not locked by default - but say they are locked

2008-09-19 Thread Liam O'Reilly
Public bug reported:

I am using the Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex Alpha 6 AMD64 live CD. When the
desktop has fully loaded there are two panels. Both panel behave in the
same way.

There are two states : locked and unlocked. When locked a panel should
not be able to be moved to another side of the screen.

When a panel is locked, right clicking it yields the option "Allow Panel to be
Moved" i.e. unlock it.
When a panel is unlocked, right clicking it yields the option "Lock Panel
Position" i.e. lock it.

When the system has booted fully. The options on both panels say "Allow
Panel to be Moved" i.e. the panels are in the locked state. However, you
can drag then to other sides of the screen i.e. they are in the unlocked
state.

The orginal label of the option does not match the actual state. Once
toggled they work correctly
