[Bug 986208] Re: Compiz does not remember user preferences upon system restart

2012-10-17 Thread Lionel Dricot
None of the solution provided works for me on a fresh 12.10
installation.

I've changed the dconf settings as seen with :

dconf read /org/compiz/profiles/unity/plugins-with-set-keys
['core', 'composite', 'opengl', 'decor', 'vpswitch', 'snap', 'mousepoll',
'resize', 'place', 'move', 'wall', 'grid', 'session', 'animation', 'fade',
'unitymtgrabhandles', 'workarounds', 'ezoom', 'unityshell', 'scale', 'expo']

And the gconf key keeps putting unityshell at the back at every reboot.

I also disabled launcher catpures the pointer but nothing works. Is
that considered a priority bug?

[Bug 213432] Re: gtk_window.present() doesn't work if the window is already on another desktop

2011-01-29 Thread Lionel Dricot
Chris For example, try Getting Things GNOME (apt-get install gtg).
Open a task, move that task to another desktop and try to reopen that
task from the main view. Nothing happens.

Other example: gwibber from the MeMenu. Open GWibber on one desktop.
Switch to another. From the MeMenu, choose micro-blogging. Nothing
happens.

There quite a lot of examples here and there, I could try to list them
but I'm not sure it is useful.

[Bug 656719] [NEW] Most user avatars are not displayed

2010-10-08 Thread Lionel Dricot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwibber

Since the upgrade to Maverick, most avatars of my twitter/identi.ca
contacts are not displayed. Only blank space.

This looks like a regression from a bug I had in the Lucid develepoment
time. (another similar bug #455943 )

One user for which the avatar appears correctly : https://twitter.com/nicolasy
(in fact I have only two contacts that I can see their avatars)
One for which it doesn't appear: https://twitter.com/ploum

lspci|grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 02)

Note that I'm behind an http_proxy. But the fact that some avatars are
displayed should be the proof that it's not proxy reletad.

[Bug 656720] [NEW] epiphany is awfully slow as s oon as their is a JS on the page

2010-10-08 Thread Lionel Dricot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

Since the switch to maverick, epiphany is not usable on any webpage with
Javascript due to bad performance. (this only happens on my older
laptop, with a 1,6Ghz processor).

In lucid and even in lucid with webkit PPA, there was no such issue.
(except with identi.ca, but this is a specific webkit bug)

From a comment I received, it looks like JIT might not be enabled in
Maverick, making epiphany useless in the whole release.

[Bug 655782] [NEW] pager.set_n_rows has no effect at all

2010-10-06 Thread Lionel Dricot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-wnck

import gtk
import wnck
pager = wnck.Pager(wnck.screen_get_default())
pager.set_n_rows(2)
window = gtk.Window()
pager.show()
window.add(pager)
window.show()
gtk.main()

It displays a pager but only on one row. The set_n_rows has no effect at all

[Bug 655044] [NEW] olive-gtk recommanded by bzr-gtk but not existing

2010-10-05 Thread Lionel Dricot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bzr-gtk

Since Maverick, bzr-gtk doesn't include olive anymore but instead
recommand the package olive-bzr.

But this package doesn't exist in Maverick. A non-existant package
should not be recommanded nor should a software be silently removed
during upgrade.

To fix this bug, solutions are:

1) include package olive-bzr in maverick and install it automatically
when people with bzr-gtk do the upgrade.

2) re-include olive in bzr-gtk and remove olive-bzr from the recommand
field

3) remove olive-bzr from the recommand field and do nothing but it's bad
as it means that some user will see a functionnal loss without any easy
solution.

[Bug 315119] Re: Doesn't implement the metacity shade button

2010-09-15 Thread Lionel Dricot
I'm a bit sad because not answer has been made to my comment #6 and
because someone even volunteered to provide a patch.

So, we have :
- A clear user request
- Someone volunteering to implement it
- No drawback at all (the change will only be noticeable in a positive way)

and, basically, someone else decided no without any explanation and we
have to accept it. That's sad :-(

[Bug 315119] Re: Doesn't implement the metacity shade button

2010-09-15 Thread Lionel Dricot
Vish : yes, it is implemented in older theme (like crux). I don't know
why it is not implemented anymore. The fact is that it is a feature
offered by Metacity and that I don't understand why a theme might choose
to not implement it by design.

I totally understand the send your patch answer but, in this case,
someone was willing to provide a patch and, by closing this bug, it is
answered that a patch would not be accepted anyway. (and my guess that a
patch from Thomas Thurman would be of very high quality).

Accessibility is, I agree, out of the scope. It was part of an
experiment I was doing with users that lead me to discover that bug. I
shouldn't have talked about that here. (This led me to conduct some
experiments with older metacity themes like Crux, Gorilla, you know that
kind of old stuffs, not really shiny)

And yes, you are right, it should be reported against the new default theme too.

Ubuntu has experimented putting the buttons on the other side of the window and
I believe that implementing those buttons in new themes might maybe led to
other experiments that might be useful (or not, but there's no way to know).

Don't get me wrong : this is not a major issue, I agree that is very low
priority, I would not kill for it ;-)

[Bug 604686] Re: confirmation should be asked before removing U1 folder from server

2010-07-14 Thread Lionel Dricot
John What about warning only when deleting the folder at the root of
U1 user ?

Lionel has an Ubuntu One folder and another folder called Pictures that is
synchronized with his U1 account.

Lionel delete a file in one of those folder : the file is immediatly deleted.
Lionel delete Pictues/Trip in Spain folder : the folder is immediatly deleted
with all the content
Lionel delete the Pictures folder (which is a root) :

a warning appears :

You have choosen to remove Pictures, which is synchronized with your U1
account.
- Cancel, I don't want to remove that folder
- Remove it only from that computer and don't sync with U1 account (= U1 sync
will be disabled on this computer)
- Yes, remove it from that computer and from my U1 account. I understand it
will be removed from any computer in sync with my U1 account.

I believe that this will fix my usecase, or at least make it a lot less
dangerous while, in the same time, will not be annoying to U1 users.

[Bug 605349] [NEW] Locked screensaver and gdm switch user are conceptually the same

2010-07-14 Thread Lionel Dricot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

From an end-user perspective, locking your screen or switching user are
exactly the same : you lock your session while allowing other users to
log in their own session. Both locking and switching have the same
result with the same feature but with a different screen. The locked
screen also needs one more action to allow another user to log in.

To solve this bug, locking and switching should be merged into one
action. The result should be to display the GDM login screen just like
using switching.

- The screensaver should still be active above the GDM switch screen.
- The currently logged user should already be selected in the GDM screen to
allow a quick type your password to relog immediatly
- A message feature should be available (or we have to accept that this is a
feature removal)

User benefits :
+ Better seamless experience (not having to ask yourself which one you want to
use)
+ One less entry in the menu. This is always a huge win !
+ Better switching discoverability. A lot of user still don't know that this is
possible, even when confronted with the screensaver login screen because they
don't read the buttons. The GDM screen speaks for itself.
+ Discoverability of the guest session.
+ The GDM artwork is nice. Why should we have this ugly box on a black
background ?

Technical benefits :
+ One module less - less code
+ Remove some multiple bug opportunities by removing the screensaver lockscreen
+ avoid code and debugging duplication
+ avoid artwork duplication

Open questions :
+ Which screensaver should be used when multiple users are logged in ? (the
last logged user ?)
+ Forbid switching when you are logged in ? (does it make sense ? is it
already possible ?)

[Bug 604686] Re: confirmation should be asked before removing U1 folder from server

2010-07-13 Thread Lionel Dricot
Duanedesign I perfectly understand what I should have done. But the
fact that I was tricked (and I a computer geek) is the proof that
there's a need to prevent incident like this.

Hopefully, I recovered most of my datas by rebooting my third laptop
without any connection. But I was close ;-)

Now, I think it's really important to prevent this from happening because
I think that this is a very common use case :

1) receive a new laptop
2) copy everything on the new laptop from the old one
3) checking that everything is fine on the new one.
4) a few day later, removing files from the old one in order to give that old
laptop to someone else.

If the removing files bit is done while logged in, you will also
remove file from your U1 account and thus from your new laptop.

This look a very normal pattern and, thus, should not have any major
repercussion.

I think that warning before removing a folder might be enough, with the
following options :

- Cancel, I don't want to remove that folder
- Remove it only from that computer and don't sync with U1 account (= U1 sync
will be disabled on this computer)
- Yes, remove it from that computer and from my U1 account. I understand it
will be removed from any computer in sync with my U1 account.

Maybe the confirmation should be opened in a webpage ?

1) it was working previously and al least one existing configuration

2) there's no rule that say that it's bad to return maildir:. It's just

[Bug 581718] Re: dovecot upgrade purposely breaks working configuration

2010-05-17 Thread Lionel Dricot
I'm using absolute path.

The problem is that the path was given by LDAP with :

user_attrs = mailbox=home (this is what is recommended in the
documentation)

It seems that, for whatever reason this string is passed directly to the
code and used as home. But because it starts with maildir:, it fails
the test first character is /.

The workaround so far was to disable mailbox from ldap and use directly
mail_location = maildir:/home/mail/%u

I've seen a similar symptom on dovecot mailing list and the dev reply something
like this is wrong, remove the maildir:. It's really a pitty because a lot of
usecases are now broken because of a poor implementation of one very specific
test. The error message is also not really informative.

[Bug 545096] Re: [lucid][R500 X1400] intermitent screen corruption (pink world ) - regression from -20 to -21 kernel

2010-04-26 Thread Lionel Dricot
I was able to reproduce that bug with -21 kernel but it seems a lot less
frequent. So, to summarize, this is what happens:

There are four possible situations :
1) Everything is smooth and fine.
2) Splash screen is ugly but everything is fine once logged (not a real problem)
3) Normal session with backlight flickering. This starts immediatly at login
and appears randomly during the whole session. This is a bit annoying but a bit
subtle and you can work with it the whole day (if you are in a bright room. A
bit more annoying in darker places).
4) Pink world. Heavy corruptions with freezes. This is appears randomly during
the session but starts only after at least 4 or 5 minutes. This make it
impossible to work with the computer but also impossible to know if you will
hit the bug or not..

It has to be noted that those 4 situations are mutually exclusives. It
means that if I have an ugly splash screen, I'm sure I will not have any
corruption. Also, as soon as I see backlight flickering, I know I will
not have any Pink World !

* With normal boot (-21 kernel) :
  - 50% of the time, everything is fine and smooth (1)
 - 40% of the time, backlight flickering (3)
 - 10% of the time, pink world (4)

* With normal boot (-20 kernel) :
  - 80% of the time, pink world (4)
  - 20% of the time, (3)

* With nomodeset (any known kernel):
 - 100% of the time, everything work but splashscreen (2)

[Bug 545096] Re: [lucid][R500 X1400] intermitent screen corruption (pink world )

2010-04-15 Thread Lionel Dricot
I've been runing without any corruption for 3 days using kernel
2.6.32-20-generic since Monday night. (there were both a kernel upgrade
and a radeon upgrade)

There was obviously a fix in this kernel. I've even seen a related line
in the changelog but I can't find it back. It was something like fixing
the pulsating backlight horizontal sync.

I still have some subtles backlight changes but those are a lot less
annoying, a lot less frequent and, most of all, there's no corruption
anymore !

Now, I hope that today's upgrade will not bring back the problem :-) If the
problem is not back, this bug can be considered as fixed.

[Bug 563118] [NEW] Lucid upgrade switch to serve-branches.conf without providing one

2010-04-14 Thread Lionel Dricot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: loggerhead

From Karmic to Lucid, loggerdhead switches from /etc/loggerhead.conf to
/etc/serve-branches.conf.

Problem is that the user is not informed about this change and that no
serve-branches.conf is provided.
More : loggerhead refuses to start if there is no serve-branches.conf file.

So, in every case, upgrading to Lucid will break loggerhead. Loggerhead
will simply be not runned anymore and the admin will only discover it
the day an user try to access loggerhead. At that point, the admin will
have to read the /etc/init.d/ script to understantd that a new config
fil is required.

[Bug 557884] [NEW] telepathy mission-control might timeout too early when joining a chatroom

2010-04-08 Thread Lionel Dricot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: telepathy-mission-control

When joining a chatroom over telepathy-gabble (XMPP), mission-control
might time out before you received an answer from the server.

The effect is that… nothing happens! You keep trying to join the
chatroom, the log even say you start being connected but no windows
appears. This is especially visible when using gateway such as the XMPP-
IRC gateway.

This problem has been acknowledged and fixed upstream by simply increasing the
timeout :

Hi Bryce,

Hardware problem is the first think I thought but :

- There's never any problem under intrepid or under Windows
- The problem appeared the very day I upgraded to Lucid
- The problem still doesn't appear if I fall back to the VESA driver

Could you provide me a build of the Lucid radeon driver which is pre-KMS
by default ? (more than 8 days old, unfortunatly my cache doesn't go
that far).

I could then confirm that nomodeset is working or not with those older
driver and not the newest.

2) I removed -ati and -radeon, rebooted in VESA then reinstalled them
and rebooted in radeon.

So, I see only 4 possible explanations :

1) It's an hardware problem only triggered by KMS that was uncovered by
the Lucid upgrade, that becames more important the day KMS was switched
on by default and then suddenly disappeared. It looks like a lot of
coincidence to me but still possible.

2) Having the fglrx package solves the bug, even if lspci says that I'm
using radeon, ttm, drm_kms_helper, drm, i2c_algo_bit.

3) The bug was caused by some bad values in some registers of the card.
Those registers were reset when I rebooted with the VESA driver. It has
to be noted that the bug appeared after I booted once with the VESA
driver just after my lucid upgrade.

4) The bug isn't related to heat and is even more random. (it appears
only on weekday!)

[Bug 551194] Re: Rhythmbox constantly consumes 20-30% of CPU

2010-04-02 Thread Lionel Dricot
I realized yesterday that the situation has improved *a lot* with tihs
week upgrade (unfortunatly, I cannot tell precisely when. Probably
monday or tuesday night upgrade). Now, RB is always between 8 and 11% of
CPU and doesn't seem to affect other applications anymore.

Steve, can you confirm this so we can close this bug as fixed ?

[Bug 545096] Re: [lucid][R500 X1400] intermitent screen corruption (pink world )

2010-04-02 Thread Lionel Dricot
With the latest upgrade (changelog says that DKMS is now enabled by
default), the bug happens all the time, even with the nomodeset option
or an old kernel. It looks like the nomodeset option is not working. (=
The computer is totally unusable on Lucid)

Also, it happens in recovery mode in console, as soon as the driver is
loaded, without starting X!

Finally, it seems to be related to the heat. In the morning, it doesn't
happen for hours then it starts and become more and more frequent. Even
full shut down are not sufficient. Shutting down the computer for one
hour make it bug free for a couple of hours again.

[Bug 551507] Re: Gedit indent (CTRL+T) plugin missing

2010-03-31 Thread Lionel Dricot
Sebastien Sorry, I thought it was only a packaging issue.

Chris You are right! Thanks for the tip.

I guess that the bug is invalid then.

** Changed in: gedit (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Invalid
