[Bug 1174211] [NEW] Mouse settings are missing for wireless mice in Ubuntu 13.04

2013-04-29 Thread Lisa Schmidt
Public bug reported:

When I have a wireless mouse attached, the mouse settings ("Pointer
Speed") do not show up in the "Mouse & Touchpad" settings, only those
for Touchpad. Only when I have a corded mouse attached, the Pointer
Speed setting shows up. Furthermore, the "Acceleration" setting is
always completely missing, for both the Touchpad and the Mouse setting.
I tested this with different mice, corded and cordless. The Pointer
Speed setting for wireless mice is always missing. I also tested this
with a Live system and the problem is there as well.

[Bug 1063782] Re: Mouse pointer speed settings have no effect

2013-03-18 Thread Lisa Schmidt
Sensitvity has no effect at all. And even at lowest values for
Acceleration it's still too fast. The spectrum of values is too narrow.
Plugging in a new mouse the values of the mouse settings are already
very low by default. It should be in the middle and then from there the
user could adjust the values. When starting from very low values, the
settings are very limited already, no possibilities for slowing it down
enough. Very annoying. Using a standard wireless mouse with 1000dpi.
Values are at lowest, still it's too fast.

[Bug 1067876] Re: [quantal] Missing "Safely Remove Drive" and "Eject" options from Quicklists. Only have "Unmount".

2013-02-03 Thread Lisa Schmidt
Why not have "Eject" for USB sticks and other removable media, and "Safely
remove" for external hard disks? For USB sticks and alike, "Eject" is alright,
because it's usually safe. But for an external hard disk, it should be made
more safe:
Clicking "Safely remove" should show a dialog window to confirm the action, so
that users don't do this by accident.

[Bug 1103014] Re: Impossible to grab scrollbar handler in wide dropdown menus

2013-01-22 Thread Lisa Schmidt
Oh, and I installed mkvtoolnix via ppa from the developer's website:

http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/downloads.html

Still happens, no matter which version of mkvtoolnix I ever used. It's a
problem of those overlay scrollbars. I experienced it in other
applications as well, no matter if a fresh install of Ubuntu or not.
However, mkvtoolnix is the application I remember at the moment after I
experienced it again today.

There is also a sometimes problem of horizontal overlay scrollbars
covering buttons that are below in case those buttons are very close to
the scrollbar area. Those buttons then cannot be clicked. However, I
can't remember which application it was where I experienced this.

[Bug 1103014] [NEW] Impossible to grab scrollbar handler in wide dropdown menus

2013-01-22 Thread Lisa Schmidt
Public bug reported:

Ever since I am using Ubuntu with Unity, I have the problem that in many
cases I cannot grab the scrollbar handler of dropdown menus. This
usually happens when a dropdown list is wider than the original menu
itself.

Example:

1. Install application mkvtoolnix.
2. Open mkvmerge GUI from Dash
3. Add MKV file (button 'Add') that contains a video and/or audio track
4. Select video or audio track from list 'Tracks, chapters, tags'
5. In tab 'General track options' open the 'Language' dropdown list of
available languages to set
6. Try to scroll to desired language by grabbing scrollbar handler of dropdown
list
7. It is not possible to grab this handler; you will end up clicking on the
desktop

See screenshot.

[Bug 1060722] Re: Nautilus does not obey Previews preferences for files other than pictures

2012-10-03 Thread Lisa Schmidt
** Description changed:

Setting Nautilus preferences for previews to generate thumbnails only
for files smaller than X does not have any effect on non-images.

For example, if I set in Nautilus preferences to show thumbnails only
for files smaller than 10 MB. Then Nautilus generates thumbnails only
for images smaller than 10 MB -- but not for any other file type.
Nautilus still generates thumbnails for non-images, such as videos or
pdf files, regardless of their file size.

This is a huge problem for users who have lots of big sized video files
and don't want them to get thumbnailed, but want to keep thumbnailing
  for pictures.
+
+ It gets especially annoying when downloading huge video files. Then the
+ thumbnailing process goes on and on unless the file has finished
+ downloading. As a user I feel forced to switch off thumbnailing
+ completely as Nautilus fails to obey what is being set in the
+ preferences.

[Bug 1037256] Re: Sorting items by names do not work properly

2012-09-03 Thread Lisa Schmidt
Update:

I just found out that it also fails without the dash.

It will still sort like this:

Samurai II Duel.txt
Samurai III Duel.txt
Samurai I Musashi.txt

So obviously the problem is with I, II, III followed by a space
character. Obviously the space character has priority before a real
letter character. Ubuntu fails completely to do basic sorting. Only if
you add "." after I, II, III, only then it sorts properly. It's a
mystery to me. Such basic thing should work. I hope this gets fixed.
Because this tiny thing makes Ubuntu very hard for me to do effective
work when confronted with messed up sorting of my daily files.

[Bug 1037256] Re: Sorting items by names do not work properly

2012-09-03 Thread Lisa Schmidt
Yes, I can reproduce this. Sorting doesn't work properly. I use Ubuntu
12.04 64-bit.

It always fails when there is a dash involved. Then Ubuntu uses a
totally messed up sorting system. In the following example, Ubuntu sorts
according to the character that comes after the dash, but ignoring the
previous character(s).

For instance:

Samurai I.txt
Samurai II.txt
Samurai III.txt

Now add a dash and characters following after the dash.
Then Ubuntu will scramble the order:

Samurai II-Duel.txt
Samurai III-Duel.txt
Samurai I-Musashi.txt

Ubuntu now orders according to the words "Duel" and "Musashi" instead of
first keeping the sorting of the preceeding "I", "II" and "III". If you
use a period "." instead, then the sorting is correct. But if a dash is
involved, then Ubuntu fails to sort properly.

See screenshot attached.

[Bug 993881] [NEW] Usability in Unity: Accidental logout due to menu hovering

2012-05-03 Thread Lisa Schmidt
Public bug reported:

In the far right upper corner, there's the Ubuntu icon under which
access to 'System Settings' etc can be found. When trying to select
'System Settings', it often happens that users accidentally hit 'Switch
User Account' from the neighboring user accounts menu.

Reason:

The user accounts menu icon is directly next to the Ubuntu settings
icon. And because the space these icons take up on the panel is so
small, but the menu itself is much wider, it easily happens that users
accidentally open the menu that is next to the left when trying to hit
the first menu entry of the menu that was originally opened. This is
because the menu entries start on the left side, of course. Users aim
for these entries by making a diagonal move.

So, when making this diagonal move, they often accidentally hover over
the neighboring user accounts menu if they don't move their mouse
strictly vertical. This is very unintuitive and in the course of usage a
thing users don't think of. And because this happens quickly and they
expect to hit the desired menu entry, they also make a mouse-click right
away. But then they end up hovering over the user account menu, thus
opening it and accidentally clicking 'Switch User Account' (and
effectively logging out *dang*).

This is very undesirable and should be fixed by making a click mandatory
in order to open these menus.
