Public bug reported: Binary package hint: performous I launch performous and the main screen shows up. I get no sound here, but the real problem is that it occasionally hangs if I press one of the keys S or Q (Start, Quit). Only the C and P keys (Configure and Practice) always works as intended. Sometimes I'm able to practice a bit, but then it's almost a sure bet it will hang on a key press in the main menu. Once hung, xkill does not seem to kill it either, it just closes the window, but the performous process is only sensible to a brute kill -9 or other uncaught signals. Me fool! I've just read my own bug submission and I've just realized I have an extra zero in APT::Cache-Limit 9; (when I configured APT I meant to give it 90M of RAM, not 900M...). Now I assume that APT sometimes fails to allocate 900M of RAM on a system with 2GB, because it depends on how much free RAM the system has. This would explain why the problem is not (easily) reproducible, right? I've just tried konqueror: version 3.5/debian uses alphabetical order, version 4.1.4/intrepid (but not on kubuntu) behaves the same as nautilus. I've no other versions to try. However I don't believe that the behavior of any other piece of software, be it konqueror or others, should be a reference point, 'cause in that case I could take 'ls' as a reference point (or konqueror 3.5) and pretend nautilus behaves the wrong way. I think the reference point should be end users. Finally, if adding such an option makes the system unstable, I've to say there must be a design flaw in the system itself... And there is a reason why I forgot to search through bug reports in the first place: I come from Debian where I used to report bugs through reportbug, which shows a list of already opened bugs on the package, before starting the bug report. But someone told me that reportbug it's not the bug reporting tool in Ubuntu and that apport-cli is the replacement... except it does not show the already opened bugs, but that's another story... This is not an issue anymore for me since I upgraded to Jaunty, but it has been an issue until the last day I had been using Intrepid. Now I haven't Intrepid anymore on any of my computers, so I don't know if it is still a issue for it. As a side note (e.g. "rant") Intrepid support will end in 8 months, and since this bug received some attention after 6 months from the first reporting, I guess any energy in its resolution would be wasted anyway. As another side note (e.g. "rant 2 the revenge"), for a desktop system this bug is quite important (I refer to the "low" importance assigned to it), because if you disable a sound there could be a good reason behind that choice besides your personal taste. FYI, I moved to Jaunty in the hope of seeing this bug magically disappear (and it disappeared), but I gained other problems with the move (and let alone bug #280657...). From my p.o.v. bugs should not have any importance that differentiates them, because if you dare to take the time to report a bug, that alone means that bug is important, otherwise no one would have reported it. I think that all bugs are at least "normal" bugs, then there are "security" related bugs and bugs that "cause data loss" (more important) and maybe others, but below normal bugs there should be no distinction between what makes a particular package unusable or what renders a whole system noisy and less "sleeping baby nearby" friendly: in my case this bug rendered the whole system unusable in some situations (I couldn't turn it on). I know, it's volunteer work, little time, few developers, I could contribute more, Vista is way worse, and so on. I was not aware of apport-cli, which seems to be what I want, except it seems to require a www browser installed (not always the case on a server). However I think I can live with this limitation, assuming it actually exists. Stop working? Why have a broken package in the distro? Why not just remove it from Ubuntu (for now)? I was not aware of apport-cli, which seems to be what I want, except it seems to require a www browser installed (not always the case on a server). Me fool! I've just read my own bug submission and I've just realized I have an extra zero in APT::Cache-Limit 9; (when I configured APT I meant to give it 90M of RAM, not 900M...). Now I assume that APT sometimes fails to allocate 900M of RAM on a system with 2GB, because it depends on how much free RAM the system has. This would explain why the problem is not (easily) reproducible, right? I've just tried konqueror: version 3.5/debian uses alphabetical order, version 4.1.4/intrepid (but not on kubuntu) behaves the same as nautilus. I've no other versions to try. However I don't believe that the behavior of any other piece of software, be it konqueror or others, should be a reference point, 'cause in that case I could take 'ls' as a reference point (or konqueror 3.5) and pretend nautilus behaves the wrong way. I think the reference point should be end users. I was not aware of apport-cli, which seems to be what I want, except it seems to require a www browser installed (not always the case on a server). Me fool! I've just read my own bug submission and I've just realized I have an extra zero in APT::Cache-Limit 9; (when I configured APT I meant to give it 90M of RAM, not 900M...). Now I assume that APT sometimes fails to allocate 900M of RAM on a system with 2GB, because it depends on how much free RAM the system has. This would explain why the problem is not (easily) reproducible, right? I've just tried konqueror: version 3.5/debian uses alphabetical order, version 4.1.4/intrepid (but not on kubuntu) behaves the same as nautilus. I've no other versions to try. However I don't believe that the behavior of any other piece of software, be it konqueror or others, should be a reference point, 'cause in that case I could take 'ls' as a reference point (or konqueror 3.5) and pretend nautilus behaves the wrong way. I think the reference point should be end users. Finally, if adding such an option makes the system unstable, I've to say there must be a design flaw in the system itself... [Bug 331429] [NEW] gnome does not honor the "Disabled" setting in sound preferences
Public bug reported: Gnome plays the access sound during access even if the corresponding option is disabled in Sound Preferences. I disabled the access sound when my system was 8.04. [Bug 401122] [NEW] Performous hangs on the main screen
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: performous I launch performous and the main screen shows up. I get no sound here, but the real problem is that it occasionally hangs if I press one of the keys S or Q (Start, Quit). Only the C and P keys (Configure and Practice) always works as intended. Sometimes I'm able to practice a bit, but then it's almost a sure bet it will hang on a key press in the main menu. Once hung, xkill does not seem to kill it either, it just closes the window, but the performous process is only sensible to a brute kill -9 or other uncaught signals. This is not an issue anymore for me since I upgraded to Jaunty, but it has been an issue until the last day I had been using Intrepid. Now I haven't Intrepid anymore on any of my computers, so I don't know if it is still a issue for it. As a side note (e.g. "rant") Intrepid support will end in 8 months, and since this bug received some attention after 6 months from the first reporting, I guess any energy in its resolution would be wasted anyway. As another side note (e.g. "rant 2 the revenge"), for a desktop system this bug is quite important (I refer to the "low" importance assigned to it), because if you disable a sound there could be a good reason behind that choice besides your personal taste. FYI, I moved to Jaunty in the hope of seeing this bug magically disappear (and it disappeared), but I gained other problems with the move (and let alone bug #280657...). From my p.o.v. bugs should not have any importance that differentiates them, because if you dare to take the time to report a bug, that alone means that bug is important, otherwise no one would have reported it. I think that all bugs are at least "normal" bugs, then there are "security" related bugs and bugs that "cause data loss" (more important) and maybe others, but below normal bugs there should be no distinction between what makes a particular package unusable or what renders a whole system noisy and less "sleeping baby nearby" friendly: in my case this bug rendered the whole system unusable in some situations (I couldn't turn it on). I know, it's volunteer work, little time, few developers, I could contribute more, Vista is way worse, and so on. [Bug 297861] [NEW] segfaults with some options in eboard
