[Bug 1895036] Re: spamprobe crashes on train and cleanup operations

2020-09-10 Thread Luke Schierer
I copied my database out of the way and created a new one to see if that
helped. Working it through a corpus of my saved mail with train-good and this
brand-new empty database, I see that it is not crashing on every run, only some
of them.
I do not know yet if there is a pattern to when it does and does not crash, the
count of emails it will and will not train-good on is not at all consistent.

[Bug 1893543] Re: dovecot is not parsing the variables in dovecot-ldap.conf.ext correctly

2020-08-31 Thread Luke Schierer
Those list posts both speak to working dovecot configurations (dovecot
is working for imap) where the doveadm command does not work. The
above snippets are from my /etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf.ext file which
is referenced by /etc/dovecot/conf.d/auth-ldap.conf.ext file. Thus my
imap connections aren't working at all. I do not see any where in the
man page of the commented out in-file documentation to indicate that I
can change the way dovecot uses the search base for its default searches
as part of authentication.

I've posted upstream, we'll see if I get a reply.

[Bug 1893543] [NEW] dovecot is not parsing the variables in dovecot-ldap.conf.ext correctly

2020-08-29 Thread Luke Schierer
Public bug reported:

My dovecot users log in as user@domain, with the ldap directory set up
with a couple of different OUs, with one OU per domain. the users in
the OUs overlap. if I set

luke@schierer@littera001:/etc/dovecot$ sudo grep -v  ^# dovecot-
ldap.conf.ext |  uniq

hosts = censor001.plerumque.thecrazyguys.net

tls = yes
tls_ca_cert_dir = /etc/ssl/certs
tls_require_cert = allow

debug_level = 4

auth_bind = yes

base = ou=%d,dc=thecrazyguys,dc=net

scope = subtree

user_filter = (&(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=%n))

pass_filter = (&(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=%n))

blocking = no
luke@schierer@littera001:/etc/dovecot$

then I get a search base of
ou=,dc=thecrazyguys,dc=net  which is invalid

I was experimenting, and I tried
base = dc=%d,dc=thecrazyguys,dc=net
which produces a search base of
dc=domain,dc=thecrazyguys,dc=net
which would be correct, except that my ldap tree is set up with OUs and not an
extra DC component.

for whatever reason, it will do variable substitution for dc=%d, but not
for ou=%d. this is certainly not documented, and seems like wrong
behavior, since having an ou in a search base is valid.

I changed enum_cache_timeout to 600 and set entry_cache_timeout = 200 in
the [domain/schierer] section of the above sssd.conf file. Despite
that, it still starts stating I am unknown around 320 seconds ( I have
316 seconds worth of successful "whoami ; sleep 10s" loop iterations, I
know it took a couple of seconds to type that loop up and hit enter from
when I initially ran the id command.)

actually, that is right on 300, isn't it? anyway, as I said, while I

[Bug 1807246] [NEW] after upgrading to bionic, my session forgets who I am frequently

2018-12-06 Thread Luke Schierer
Public bug reported:

I configured sssd on an Ubuntu 16.04 LTS system, and it worked just
fine. In fact, using the same sssd.conf file (which is managed by
puppet) on un-upgraded system continues to work fine.

However, after upgrading to 18.04.1 LTS, I find that the system is
continuously forgetting who I am. After a few commands, or a few
minutes (I'm not sure exactly how many, but around 3-5 minutes) if I try
to run sudo or whoami, it says that I am an unknown user. for example,

```
whoami
whoami: cannot find name for user ID 2000: Unknown error 1432158300
```

if I run the id command on my username, it returns the correct results,
and whoami/sudo/other restricted commands will work again for a short
time before forgetting who I am again.

In the sssd_nss.log file, I see the lookup against the @local domain,
but I do not see a related lookup in the ldap domain either in that log
file or in the log file specific to the ldap domain.

Any gaim dependent package will need to at least be recompiled. Any

We have no one with enough time, much less interest, to spend attempting

Reverse engineering for compatability is legal, if the person doing it

[Bug 75850] Re: gaim should use gnome-keyring for passwords

2006-12-16 Thread Luke Schierer
To not strongly object, I would have to see that the patch author had
considered the case of a user switching between gnome and not-gnome, and
had handled it in a sane way. This would minimally have to be handled
in the case of one such transition.

To gain my _support_, the patch would have to additionally be able to
handle multiple such transitions, for example the user who has a .gaim
directory on a usb key and moves between home and work, where one is
gnome and the other not.

[Bug 68603] Re: Missing configuration options on latest gaim

2006-10-27 Thread Luke Schierer
just to clarify here. We didn't do this out of caprice, but because it
was the best of several poor options for solving an interaction between
the desire for different keystrokes and the need for accessibility and
i18n input methods to work correctly. When faced with the reality that
our preferences were in some cases causing issues with the ability of
some users to input text at all, and for other users were not flexible
enough, it quickly became evident that the *only* option was to delegate
this to the gtkrc, for all editing a text file is less user-friendly
than clicking a preference.

look at the gtkrc plugin, included with that version of gaim. at least
I think it made that beta. if not, look at writing a ~/.gtkrc-2.0 along
the lines of gaim.sf.net/gtkrc-2.0

[Bug 61755] Re: No bonjour support

2006-09-26 Thread Luke Schierer
alternately, but requiring far more work, it would require that there be
a second package, gaim-bonjour. It'd be a ton more work because the
original source would be the same as the gaim package, so there would
have to be patches stripping out everything else and modifying the build
incredibly (to use the headers from the gaim it would presumably depend
on). Less work but far less clean would be to leave the build alone,
but make the packaging only grab a few of the resultant files.

I'm not suggesting you do this mind you, just pointing out that the
possibility exists.

[Bug 59333] Re: gaim window size unrestricted

2006-09-13 Thread Luke Schierer
If a user makes a decision to resize a window such that part of a menu
is hidden, why should I, the developer, prevent him? Who am I to say
that the Help menu _must_ be seen? Perhaps that user never uses the
menu, and so does not see any loss. I know I don't use the Help menu on
any application 90% of the time. So, yes, I am saying that the user
should be able to resize a window such that widgets (and therefore
features) are hidden from view.

Once I make that stipulation, putting an absolute limit on how small a
window can get is clearly an impossible task. How small is too small?
75% of the window? 50%? what about the buddy list, where its vertical
height could be reasonably resized to show only a single buddy entry.
Add to that, the fact that a single buddy entry might be one of two
sizes. How do I compute too small?

I think that users should be expected to exercise a little bit of
responsibility here. IF they resize a window too small, I would
expect them to immediately increase its size. If they need a feature, I
expect them to not hide it from view when they resize the window.

Consistency is certainly of importance. But I don't agree that
consistency is a sufficient excuse to repeat the mistakes other
programmers are making in many cases. Here I still see no compelling
reason to place an arbitrary restriction on what you can decide to do
with your use of gaim.

If gaim claimed to be part of GNOME, it might be a different story.
GNOME makes specific promises to users about how applications will
behave, as outlined in their HIG and other documents. Failure to follow
the GNOME HIG is a bug - for GNOME applications.

Gaim is not however, and so what, exactly, we are supposed to be
consistent with is far less certain, far less clear-cut. In many cases,
true consistency is clearly impossible. Gaim runs in GNOME, in KDE, in
pretty much any X11 environment with any or no window manager or desktop
environment. It also runs in Windows, and in OSX. the behavior of
windows in these diverse environments can differ quite drastically. For
that reason, most arguments for consistency fail to convince. They
tend to boil down to prefer my environment and my use patterns, who
cares about anyone else. Any such decision often increases consistency
with one environment only at the expense of consistency with some other
environment.

Why is moving the tab instead of using arrows better? Gaim is not a
GNOME project, and it seems to me that firefox's behavior is more
desirable. Plus, we allow other things that gedit doesn't, notably,
dragging a tab out of a window (vrs having to use the menu option to do
it).

[Bug 58998] Re: Gaim's tabs don't function like in Gedit/Epiphany/Terminal

2006-09-07 Thread Luke Schierer
My gut reaction is the opposite, but that's at least partly because I
almost always use firefox and gaim, and almost never GNOME stuff. I'm
also somewhat reacting to gedit's failure to destroy a tabless window
when you drag the last tab out.

if the tabs are few and big, dragging the tab certainly works well,
because you can still see your target. if the tabs get small and/or
many, the arrows would seem to be better, allowing more precision.

Since we restrict how small our tabs can get (firefox doesn't do so
nearly as soon), this may not be a concern.

[Bug 58129] Re: [Bug 58129] gaim 2.0 missing Sametime protocol

 I installed the latest gaim 2.0.0+beta3.1-1ubuntu2 from gaim 1.5. It
 removed gaim-meanwhile plugin package as the sametime plugin is now
 inside the gaim package. However, the .deb file is missing the plugin,
 so I could no longer connect to my IM server.

  I downloaded the source package, and built it on my system. It
 generated the libsametime.so. I copied it to /usr/lib/gaim/ and now I
 can connect to sametime with 2.0.0+beta3.1.

 This protocol library should be included by default. Since it built on
 my system without changes, I don't know why the official build did not
 get it unless that system did not have libmeanwhile-dev installed.

It would need to be built against the meanwhile library still though,
and is currently not.

I do not know what Ubuntu's policy on this is, but debian uses one
source tarball for multiple binary packages with some regularity.

You can see this for some of the packages that provide both a library
and a binary. Alternately, taking gaim as an example,
http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/pool/main/g/gaim/
shows 4 packages out of one tarball.

If this icon can be pulled without linking against gnome (as the proxy

accept it in that form.

There are issues though, how to control it (as some gnome users would
want different icons for different accounts) being the biggest of them.
