[Bug 414794] Re: ibus-x11 crashed with signal 5 in __libc_start_main()

2010-03-27 Thread Luke12
I have been running into this bug for a while now. Every session start,
I see apport signaling that ibus has crashed. Currently, the only
anomaly I observe is that I cannot absolutely choose a desktop
background in gnome, and end up with a plain grey background (same color
as the panel).

[Bug 351220] Re: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 00100104

2009-10-19 Thread Luke12
MM. Forgot to follow up this bug after a while. Taylor, I discovered
that the message indicated that the swap was corrupted (probably due to
some kind of error or maybe disk damage, I can't tell that from here ;-)
). You should format your swap, and correct the right configuration
files in etc (fstab and another one) so that they point to the newly
formatted swap (report the uuid, visible for example askign for more
information about the swap in Gparted).

Good luck!

I have reported a bug doesn't mean you can fill my inbox with spam

[Bug 351204] Re: [Dell Inc. MM061] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2009-04-02 Thread Luke12
Ok, in order:

1- Bug hit at resume time
2- Not consistently reproducible, or frequent - I suspend and hibernate many
times a day, and this bug affects the system seldom, at resuming from suspend.
In the last 3 days it occurred twice, and a reasonable estimate would be that
in the meantime I suspended about 20 times with 2 or 3 reboots in between.
3- Suspend in general functions, and has functioned on previous kernel releases
too (as far back as Hardy I think, at least)
4- Last time around I had flashing caps lock, I do not remember for other times
though
5- I will add that I had multiple suspended this machine when the panic
occurred last time.

I hope this helps.

[Bug 291511] [NEW] Nautilus-gksu should be included by default in Ubuntu; better yet, it should be merged with nautilus package

2008-10-31 Thread Luke12
Public bug reported:

This is obviously a wish. Argument pro-inclusion: right now users have no way
but resorting to command-line to open a file or a folder as super-user. This
can be cirvumvented by using cli, of course, but it is far form an ideal
solution.
It is obviously a risk to give such a tool in the hands of the user by default,
but I think it is worth the risk. It is only a hassle, and advanced computer
users who are however still learning the ropes in Ubuntu might be very annoyed,
considering the provided solution is not obvious.

As specified in the title, the best solution in my opinion would be to
just include the script in the core nautilus package. After all, it is
arguably a core functionality of the file manager, and having it ready
at system setup makes just sense.

[Bug 192629] Re: Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately? on NTFS / VFAT partitions

2008-10-16 Thread Luke12
There is a hackish solution for this, without having to go into the
fstab, at least in Intrepid. THIS ONLY WORKS WITH INTERNAL NTFS DRIVES.

First, mount the ntfs drive by clicking it in Nautilus. Once you've done
this, go to computer:/// in nautilus, right click on the drive, and go
into the drive section, mount settings. There, on the mount options,
add uid=1000 without commas. Unmount and remount using nautilus. If
you get errors the first time, just use dolphin to mount cleanly,
unmount, second time it should work like a charm.

And yeah, nautilus at this is far worse than dolphin. Rant: another
thing which makes me wanting to switch to KDE4 for good, ASAP.

Re: [Bug 278488] Re: Network Manager 0.7 is unable to determine if the connection is local only or instead provides internet access

2008-10-07 Thread Luke12
This has all been verified with Hardy. If the problem with my wireless
network will go on until friday, I will be able to test this also with
Intrepid.

Step 1: I connect to the house wireless network, which currently
provides local access only, using NM 0.7
Step 2: Still using NM 0.7, I connect to a GSM network using a Vodafone
modem. This network provides Internet access.
Result: NM 0.7 is now connected to both Networks, the tray icon displays
the connected to wireless network status.

Actual result: NM is not able to understand if the network provides
internet or local only access. Moreover, it uses the wireless network
connection by default over the GSM one.
The net result is that while the wireless network is activated, I cannot
access the web (even if the system IS connected to the internet via
GSM). This applies to all Ubuntu programs, from cli to graphical ones.

Expected result: since only one of the two networks provides internet
access, I would expect NM to understand which one does, and use that
network to connect to the internet. E.g. under Windows Vista the
connection manager is able to understand which networks provide internet
access and which local only, and uses the right one.

I hope it is sufficiently clear. :-)

[Bug 278485] [NEW] If Ubuntu is connected to more than one network (e.g. GSM and wireless) but only GSM has internet access, OS is unable to access internet. NM version 0.7.

2008-10-05 Thread Luke12
Public bug reported:

Using NM 0.7 in Hardy (via ppa). I stumbled upon this bug as I am currently
without DSL access and have to resort to my GSM connection (through a vodafon
modem). The wireless network also allows me to access other computers in the
network, so even without internet access it can be useful.
NM is able to handle both connections flawlessly, one at a time. However, if I
try to stay connected to both, I am unable to have internet access. Considering
that the tray icon status indicates connection to the wireless network, I am
inclined to think that NM considers the wireless network more reliable by
default and tries to connect to the internet ONLY through it. As this program
manages all connections in the OS, this means that every program (including
even cli ones such as ping and traceroute) try to reach the net only using the
wireless, and local only, network.

As soon as I disable wireless access, I am able to reach the web - even
if the modem had been connected to the GSM network all the time.

This could stem from the fact that AFAIK NM is unable to determine if a
connection is local only or instead provides internet access.

Desired behaviour: the same I get in Windows Vista. Its connection
manager is able to determine whether a connection is local only or
provides internet access (maybe pinging some servers or the DNS
server?). Moreover, if I connect to two networks at the same time, as in
the example above, it can correctly determine which one is functional.
Therefore, the user is able to stay connected to more than one network
at a time and still have internet access.

Re: [Bug 273633] Re: Network-Manager 0.7 is unable to use IWL3945 to connect to WPA-encrypted networks

2008-10-03 Thread Luke12
I would have thought it this way if the driver was completely
non-functional (as it was, see the other bug I was signaling). However,
the driver does function using wpa_supplicant from the command line, so
the bug is likely not in the driver or wpa_supplicant. Please refer also
to bug 209602 and the bugzilla entry
http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1507

I am also attaching the output of lspci. I think the line you required
is this:

0b:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
Network Connection (rev 02)

Thanks for the attention.

Luke12, this looks like a bug in iwl3945 driver or wpasupplicant maybe.

On another front: what _wired_ chipset/driver are you using? NM spits
out 'NULL(info.linux.driver)' which usually means that the driver has a
 bug :)

Ok, here is the syslog (produced according the rules provided inside the

[Bug 273633] [NEW] Network-Manager 0.7 is unable to use IWL3945 to connect to WPA-encrypted networks

2008-09-23 Thread Luke12
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

This is not a duplicate of bug 209602. I am currently unable to connect
to a WPA-encrypted network using Network-Manager. This has been verified
both in Hardy (aasac's ppa, and compat-wireless), and with an Intrepid
alpha 6 cd.

Connection specifics in NM: connection security IEEE 802.1X; encryption:
LEAP.

It is not, however, fault of the driver, since I can connect to the
network via cli and wpa_supplicant after shutting off NM and the
dhcpclient, and restarting the dhcp client after I have established a
connection.

On the other hand, I am perfectly capable of connecting to the network
using the very same version of NM but the long since deprecated (but
custom installed on my box) driver IPW3945. It seems as if NM and the
IWL driver are unable to cooperate.

For more specifics on the network I am talking about, please refer to
bug 209602 and the upstream bugzilla bug there indicated. I am currently
unable to say if NM 0.6 does work with the driver.

[Bug 270089] [NEW] Knetworkmanager 0.7 does not allow to connect to a GSM network, in general is poorer than GNOME counterpart

2008-09-14 Thread Luke12
Public bug reported:

I am using aasac's ppa to use Network-manager 0.7 in hardy, but AFAIK
this problem exists also in Intrepid. Shortly, nm-applet allows to
connect to a very broad range of networks, ranging from classical wired
or wireless to gsm or VPN. I, for example, use this functionality to
connect to a GSM networks using a HUAWEI modem. Network-manager-kde, on
the other hand, is unable to manage this kind of connection. Please
implement these features also in KDE :-)

[Bug 209602] Re: The new IWL driver for Linux does not support some encryptions

2008-09-11 Thread Luke12
Ok, a bunch of news for this bug. Namely, it does support the encryption
of my campus network, but there seems to be some incompatibility issues
among the driver, Network Manager, and the dhcp client used by Ubuntu
(dhclient). I am able to connect shutting down NetworkManager, killing
dhclient and wpasupplicant, then connecting using wpa_supplicant from
cli and finally restarting the dhcpclient.

Hope someone sorts this out - but the driver is functioning now (albeit
the compat-wireless version has no led support :-) ).

Back to ipw3945 for now, but I really do hope you can make iwl3945 shine
for the end of October :-)

[Bug 209602] Re: The new IWL driver for Linux does not support some encryptions

2008-08-28 Thread Luke12
Well, what can I say, it was a complete disaster. First of all, the
kernel stopped cold while booting after installation, at the Loading
hardware drivers step. I deduced, correctly, that this happened because
xserver-xorg packages where not up-to-date and configured to work with
this kernel ... so I installed them ... only to incur into bug 259004.
Not only that, I cannot seem to be able to connect via cable now, I must
have upgraded a package too many.

All in all, disaster stroke my box ... guess I could have to reinstall
everything ... what's worst, I was not able to determine whether the iwl
drivers functioned or not. Sorry about this :-(

Guess I will try to patch my box, otherwise I will format/reinstall
(yuppidoo). And I'll wait for Alpha 5 before any more testing ...

[Bug 246301] Re: Update the FGLRX and NVIDIA driver to 8.6 and 173.14.09

2008-07-08 Thread Luke12
I have updated and I have been using the new driver since this morning.
I am on a Hardy 32-bit box, using a GeForce 7300 (Dell notebook). It
works reasonably well, seemingly with no improvements or regressions
compared with the previous version. I however experienced a system
freeze some hours ago, while I was burning a dvd ... I am not sure it is
nvidia - related, but while the burning was going on, keyboard or mouse
inputs seemed not to be received by the systems, and I obviously had to
do a hard-reboot. Signaling it here because I witnessed similar
behaviour in the past related to issues with memory and the nvidia
driver ... if someone could point me where to find relevant clues if
this was nvidia related, I would be grateful.

no problem at all. The patch will be released, when ready, at

The problem is not in Ubuntu, but rather in the main kernel. Details
here:

http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1507

Currently the developers are working on it. I guess that when the patch
will be ready, it will be included in the linux or linux-backports
packages...I hope. Otherwise, we will all have to install the modules
through compat-wireless :-/

[Bug 217760] [NEW] Under 64 bit architecture, no easy way to add a 32-bit archive to synaptic or apt

2008-04-15 Thread Luke12
Public bug reported:

I recently switched to a 64 bit environment, hoping to use at most my
box. However, I recently found out that under 64 bit architecture, there
is no way to easily add a 32-bit only repository or, for that, to
install a 32-bit package graphically. It must be done from the command
line, using the dreaded

sudo dpkg -i -f *package*

I understand that installing core libraries compiled for another
architecture could be dangerous and lead to system breakage. However,
this limitation impairs me greatly; in my user case, I am no more able
to install packages from the BioLinux 32 bit repository. I should
download them manually, check all dependencies, and then install them
all from the command line. This drags me so much I am switching back to
32-bit.

I hope this gets solved soon - it's a shame we users with 64-bit CPUs
are forced to use 32-bit systems just to be sure to be able to install
everything we need.

Regards

Re: [Bug 215005] Re: jockey-gtk crashed with AttributeError in enables_composite()

2008-04-11 Thread Luke12
My guess. They introduced some kind of bug in jockey, which is now the
program which cares for detecting if a closed video driver is available
and needed/installable. This program does more than it looks; it not
only cares for installing the packages, but actually configures the
whole system so that they are used. Since this the fact that xorg.conf
looks much barer and, well, useless, nowadays.
Since jockey is obviously, bugged, however, this not only means that we
can't enable simply our beloved restricted drivers, it also means that
even if we install them, the system is not configured so to use them!
My solution was simply to open my xorg.conf file, and add the old

Driver nvidia

line inside the video device section. Guess what, it worked, now I am
back to compiz (note: this is kinda of a hack - which I hope is only
temporary. Would be...embarassing to launch Hardy in this situation ;-) ).

As for compiz behaving strangely today, that's another story. They are
obviously upgrading the packages in the repo, but they are doing so at a
strange pace...only some compiz packages are currently upgraded...so
that now I have compiz-core but can't have compiz-gnome. Oh well, at
least I can have compiz enabled. Guess we'll see it fixed in some hours...

Kudos

 Fresh install of Hardy:

 1. Try changing Visual Effects from None to Normal
 2. It waits, and a crash report is detected.
 3. Get message Desktop effects could not be enabled.
 4. Visual Effects is back to None.

I haven't installed any graphics drivers. Maybe it cannot be enabled
because of that, but it shouldn't crash.
