It happens to me to. The common thing seems to be Intel graphics card and/or
Firefox.
My laptop is Dell XPS m1330 with Intel x3100 with external monitor connected. I
enabled UXA acceleration in xorg.conf.

[Bug 345119] Re: [i965 X3100] X freezes/crashes randomly, only mouse pointer still functional

2009-04-17 Thread Maciej Bęcławski
Jithin: I had a freeze this morning, about 3 hours ago. I'm using
Firefox 3.5 now to see if it happens again. I'm using UXA because it
fixes some problems, for example when I run glxgears in EXA mode and
cover its window with another one then there are graphical glitches,
none of that with UXA.

[Bug 51516] Kubuntu installation differs from Ubuntu -- hardware detection

2006-07-01 Thread Maciej Pilichowski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: base-installer

It is seems that Kubuntu is not just Ubuntu without Gnome, but with KDE.
While I installed several times Ubuntu on my test machine without any
problem (stable, 6 version) I am unable to install Kubuntu at all. It
hangs while scanning disk (so even before partitioning) or after all
steps while detecting hardware.

To be sure about that I checked md5 sum, also burned the iso twice on
two different discs.

Pentium III 800 MHz, Rage IIC, Monster Sound, 256MB RAM, two hard
drives, one WD, one Fujitsu, both 3GB.

If is there any way I could be more helpful, please let me know.

I am using desktop CD, but I downloaded alternate today and I will try

installation way (quasi-live distro which can be installed with GUI) and
I think it is Ubuntu/Kubuntu big advantage.

Log files -- no problems, if computer will be operational while
installation hangs up. Where can I find those logs?

[Bug 48314] Re: Firefox freeze under KDE

2006-10-23 Thread Maciej Słojewski
Dear Vassilis & Gertjan,

I hope that at least one of you will read this message.

I can confirm this bug. It is present on my PC running Kubuntu 6.06. At
first it was present on the version 1.5.dfsg+1.5.05-0ubuntu6.06.1. The
following lines were visible under terminal:

(Gecko:5626): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_from_drawable: assertion
`gdk_window_is_viewable (src)' failed

(Gecko:5626): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_n_channels:
assertion `pixbuf != NULL' failed

(Gecko:5626): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_bits_per_sample:
assertion `pixbuf != NULL' failed

(Gecko:5626): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_width: assertion
`pixbuf !=NULL' failed

(Gecko:5626): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_height: assertion
`pixbuf != NULL' failed

(Gecko:5626): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_rowstride: assertion
`pixbuf != NULL' failed

(Gecko:5626): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (
object)' failed

Plenty of time. Finally memory share error has occured.

Then I decided to update firefox to the latest packet:
1.5dfsg+1.5.0.7-0ubuntu6.06.6. It didn't improve much. Now I can see the
following lines:

(Gecko:6299): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_from_drawable: assertion
`gdk_window_is_viewable (src)' failed

(Gecko:6299): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_n_channels:
assertion `pixbuf != NULL' failed

(Gecko:6299): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_bits_per_sample:
assertion `pixbuf != NULL' failed

(Gecko:6299): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_width: assertion
`pixbuf != NULL' failed

(Gecko:6299): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_height: assertion
`pixbuf != NULL' failed

(Gecko:6299): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_rowstride: assertion
`pixbuf != NULL' failed

(Gecko:6299): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion
`G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

It would be nice if I can help somehow. At the moment I am able to
repeat the problem any time. Nevertheless I will look for a solution by
doing some updates to other packets. Any help with that will be
appreciated.

Kind regards,
Maciej Słojewski

[Bug 48314] Re: Firefox freeze under KDE

2006-10-23 Thread Maciej Słojewski
Dear Vassilis,

Your question was:

"Does removing .gtkrc-2.0 fix the problem (hint: don't remove it, rename
it so that you can restore it later on if it makes no difference ) ? Is
this an upgrade from Breezy? If not, did you keep your old /home around?
Thanks for reporting this."

My answers: Yes, removing .gtkrc-2.0 fix the problem. Is this an upgrade
from Breezy? Yes, it is. Yes, I've kept my old /home around.

[Bug 74173] "anon_umask" option doesn't work

2006-12-02 Thread Maciej Słojewski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vsftpd

Shortly speaking:

"anon_umask" parameter does not work. It is expected that for new copied
files to ftp host the file attibutes will change to value as specified
with "anon_umask". Regardless of "anon_umask" value the new copied files
attributes are set to 0600 (octal value).

Example:

vsftpd.conf :
(...)
anon_umask=022
(...)

should give:

-rw-r--r-- that is 0644 (octal value)

nevertheless it is still
-rw-- that is 0600 (octal value)

The practical implication is that after copying some files to ftp site nobody
besides ftp site owner is able to see the files. It shouldn't be like this.

I've checked:
version 2.0.4 of vsftpd on Kubuntu 6.06 LTS
version 2.0.4 of vsftpd on Kubuntu 6.10
version 2.0.5 compiled from source on Kubuntu 6.06 LTS
version 2.0.5 compiled from source on Kubuntu 6.10

[Bug 69554] installation halted by screensaver

2006-10-31 Thread Maciej Pilichowski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: installation-report

PIII 500 MHz, Kubuntu 6.10 desktop.

I use OpenSUSE for everyday work, but I still try to check out Kubuntu.
6.6 failed (desktop) right away. For 6.10... it just took a bit longer
to fail.

1) startup is really awkward -- the boot screen, then for very, very, very...
(you have idea now I guess) just black screen, and suddenly monitor changes res
and there is KDE loading. Bad idea -- user should get the feedback what is
going on
2) there are no Mb, Gb, etc. there are GB, MB and so on (Polish translation)
3) I chose 2GB for / partition, while trying to assign mount points installer
said that I need 2048MB partition for /. Gosh 2GB is exactly 2048MB!
4) ok, finally all was formatted, I clicked next and since for all distros
installation takes time I went to eat something, I saw some progress bar or
something like this, anyway, when I came back, there was screen saver turned on
(big white X on black), CD was spinning, I could not turn off the screen saver,
and after a while silence, no response from computer, Kubuntu went dead

Hmm, probably again alternative version would work, but I want to do it
in user-friendly fashion. SuSE works without any problems (for me) with
it's installer (7.0, 9.1, 10.0, 10.1) with GUI (all except 7.0) so I
expect Kubuntu can do this too.

My suggestion -- turn off all candies while installing (screensaver) I
know it is cool to run live linux distro with all that stuff, but
installation is another story. It should be rock-solid, and for that
minimal apps should be activated.

[Bug 69554] Re: installation halted by screensaver

2006-11-01 Thread Maciej Pilichowski
ad.1) the same applies to finally installed system
ad.2) the same applies to English version (pity, I thought DVD fake 4.7GB was
enough mess)
ad.4) I managed to install it. After running live, I set monitor power
management off (KDE Control Center) and this helped. However I am 100% sure I
saw a screensaver which killed installation, not power manager -- in the latter
case the monitor should be set to stand by mode, right?

Other notes about installer:
5) summary (step 6) has bugs -- I set two partitions to format, it displayed
only one
6) when you choose manual partitioning and get to step 6, you click back, and
you are nowhere -- another bug
7) one another bug -- next/back should preserver user settings, so if I set
manual partitioning I go next, next, then back, back, installer should be in
manual mode. But it is not -- it resets the settings and if I click next I
would be in trouble (because auto mode is turned on; really bad)
8) the messages while installing are misleading, I've got two progress bar
dialogs with "checking swap", when the second time there was no HDD activity
but the CD was spinning like crazy, I hope nobody searched for swap on CD ;-)

[Bug 48314] Re: Firefox freeze under KDE

2006-11-01 Thread Maciej Słojewski
Dear All,

I really don't know what else can I do. I've installed the following
packets: 'gdb' and 'firefox-dbg'. Then I've run the following code:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ firefox -debug
GNU gdb 6.4-debian
Copyright 2005 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
GDB is free software, covered by the GNU General Public License, and you are
welcome to change it and/or distribute copies of it under certain conditions.

This GDB was configured as "i486-linux-gnu"...Using host libthread_db library
"/lib/tls/i686/cmov/libthread_db.so.1".

(gdb) bt
No stack.
(gdb) thread apply all bt

Then I've run firefox at another console and reproduced a bug.
Unfortunately nothing was recorded by gdb. I need more assistance. As a
newbie I'm not able to deal with gdb well.

2006-11-18 Thread Maciej Powalowski
Public bug reported:

"With a few easy clicks from the Ubuntu desktop, all Ubuntu 6.06 LTS

Unfortunately, trying to reproduce the hint at
http://www.ubuntu.com/news/opera9?highlight=%28opera%29
i.e. using the Add/Remove item in the Applications menu does not get me through

2006-11-23 Thread Maciej Powalowski
So have I, but can you actually add it? 'Cos that's where the trouble starts.
The "show commercial applications" box IS checked and Opera DOES show up on the
list,
but every time I try to check the box next to it (i.e. add it), a message pops
up telling me to add the channel, so I press the "add channel" button and the
window pops up again and again, round and round the watchtower. And yes, I have

[Bug 76367] Re: Kubuntu md5 checksums not on download page

2008-12-20 Thread Maciej Pilichowski
In what way this report is fixed?

IMHO the md5sum, sha1, etc. should be available directly at the download
page. Take a look at the opensuse download page.

Currently I have to download kubuntu, copy & paste the address of the
mirror, enter ftp site, look for MD5SUMS file and download it. I can do
it, ok, but it should be more easily available to download even for
weekend-user.

[Bug 157201] latex error while using texpower

2007-10-25 Thread Maciej Woloszyn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: texpower

Compilation of documents using texpower fails with a message:
LaTeX Error: File `/etc/texmf/latex/tpcolors.cfg' not found.

The reason is that the file /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/texpower/texpower.sty
contains wrong information about directories with config files tpcolors.cfg,
tpoptions.cfg and tpsettings.cfg.
In the present version of the texpower package the config files are located in
/etc/texmf/tex/latex/texpower/, not in /etc/texmf/latex/. From what I can see
in the changelog the path was modified in version 0.2-3.

After improving /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/texpower/texpower.sty everything is
OK.
Now the relevant lines look like this:
\InputIfFileExists{tpoptions.cfg}{}{}
  \input{tpcolors.cfg}
\InputIfFileExists{tpsettings.cfg}{}{}
As you can see I completely removed any path, then I run mktexlsr (was it
necessary?) and now it works (and for me it is even better, because I often
have different tpcolors.cfg files for different documents).

PS. I am sorry, but because of a simple typo ('cp -s' instead of 'cp
-a') I lost original version of texpower.sty and I cannot produce a
diff, but still I hope this information can be possibly useful to
improve the package...

[Bug 109643] Re: [nvidia-glx] [amd64] Frequent lock ups with white screen with black lines when using nvidia binary driver with CPU speed scaling/Cool 'n Quiet

2007-12-05 Thread Maciej Jesionowski
Hey, I'm adding a comment here as it seems I have a very similar
problem. I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 for desktop, I've just switched from
Windows few weeks ago. My system is:

AMD Athlon X2 4400+
ASUS M2N-VM DVI (GeForce 7050PV integrated video on nForce 630a)
ADATA 2GB 800MHz DDR2

I've installed NVidia driver through the Restricted Driver Manager.
While using Gnome with full hardware acceleration (the mode with
additional visual effects) my system hangs after few minutes and screen
fills with skewed multicolor stripes (just like described here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/109810";>Bug #109810).
If I run Gnome without visual effects, the system works fine (or so it
seems).

Looks like this problem is video related somehow (or video application
triggers it). When I launch some video application, like World of
Warcraft (running with Wine), the game often hangs on random basis.
Usually in first minute of application running. Such lock up needs a
hard reset. Sometimes everything runs fine without hanging so this issue
is a bit random.

I've read that this can be caused by Cool'n'Quiet feature of AMD
Processors, but at this moment I'm not sure if such feature is turned on
in my BIOS. Once I'm back at home I have to check it. TBH this problem
is driving me mad, I really hope that disabling CnQ would help, at least
for now.

'System halted' and when I push (not press for 4 seconds) the power
button now my PC shutdown. When I'm on the GDM login screen and I press

shutdown in a second without doing any shutdown procedures.

[Bug 94333] Re: [regression] sound card not working after clean install of Dapper, Edgy and Feisty

2007-04-03 Thread Maciej Bukczynski
Eppy, I am not convinced you have the same problem. In the original bug,
the EMU10K1 fails to load:

[   45.986859] ACPI: PCI Interrupt :02:0a.0[A] -> GSI 22 (level, low) ->
IRQ 21
[   47.004710] AC'97 0 does not respond - RESET
[   47.004721] AC'97 0 access is not valid [0x0], removing mixer.
[ 47.005801] ACPI: PCI interrupt for device :02:0a.0 disabled
[   47.005817] EMU10K1_Audigy: probe of :02:0a.0 failed with error -5

Your dmesg does not show any signs of this. It assigns the card to IRQ 5
and then does not complain:

[ 37.148000] ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNKD] enabled at IRQ 5
[   37.148000] PCI: setting IRQ 5 as level-triggered
[   37.148000] ACPI: PCI Interrupt :00:09.0[A] -> Link [LNKD] -> GSI 5
(level, low) -> IRQ 5

I could be wrong, but I think the characteristic feature of this bug is
the "AC'97 does not respond" bit.

Have you disabled your onboard sound? Does the snd_emu10k1 show up on
lsmod? Please ensure you have followed all the steps here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2387440 .. if you are sure you
still have a problem, file a new bug report.

Just because _NONE_ of the Kubuntu developers wasn't interested in
providing info which log is required.

[Bug 94333] sound card not working after clean install

2007-03-20 Thread Maciej Bukczynski
Public bug reported:

Although it is visible, Ubuntu cannot fully configure my sound card.

I have a Soundblaster Live card CT4760, and have also tried an SB Live
Platinum SB0060 card (both use emu10k1 driver) and an older Soundblaster
(using the ens1371 driver). Same behaviour. The machine is running an
Intel D850GB motherboard (without the onboard sound option), with the
last available firmware. The most interesting thing is that the Live
Platinum card had the attached LiveDrive bay, and the headphone out put
on it worked. None of the connections and channels on the PCI card
itself worked, yet the LiveDrive extension was configured as the primary
audio device. No "Volume" or "Master Volume" track was available in the
mixer, the primary was just "Headphone Out".

I have tried a clean installation of Dapper, Edgy and Feisty. All
exhibit the same problem. However, I used the same hardware years ago
with either Warty or Hoary and had no issues. The sound worked out of
the box.

Anyways, without further ado, here are the symptoms.

1. The device is listed by lspci

My laptop (Acer TravelMate 634LC, P IVM 1.8, 1Gb RAM) hangs whenever acpi is

result in hangs at various stages - during boot or later on. The BIOS is

[Bug 120834] Re: intel gm965 freezes with 3d applications

2008-10-25 Thread Maciej Słojewski
To All,

The only thing that keeps me still with Ubuntu distro is a promise that
in next release: 8.10, this bug finally will be fixed. I'm just a user,
not developer, interested in 3D graphics as a hobbyist. Perhaps the only
chance to push that bug to be fixed is to assign it as a high priority
bug to the following 8.10 milestone list:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+bugs?field.milestone%3Alist=1326

If somebody knows how to do it, I mean how to move a bug to milestone
list, please do it. Regards.

My experience is that the problem was already solved in the version 0.2-7 used

The version number for 8.10 is still 0.2-7, however I did not use it so far.
