[Bug 1252507] Re: gsd-backlight-helper fails to change backlight
Hello Sebastien, The gnome team came back with a Not A Bug. Here's the reply (from Bastien Nocera [gnome-settings-daemon developer] ): The pkexec helper doesn't work but the brightness slider works. That means that gnome-settings-daemon works, and that it's using XRandR and not the pkexec helper to change the brightness. You can double-check that with: xrandr -q --verbose | grep -i backlight Furthermore, the pkexec helper isn't public API. The public API is through D-Bus. Any idea on how to fix this? Or is there a better way to do it? I tried with DBus as shown below, but had questionable success: dbus-send --session --print-reply --dest=org.gnome.SettingsDaemon /org/gnome/SettingsDaemon/Power org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Power.Screen.SetPercentage uint32:percentage For Example: To set brightness to 30% dbus-send --session --print-reply --dest=org.gnome.SettingsDaemon /org/gnome/SettingsDaemon/Power org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Power.Screen.SetPercentage uint32:30 When the above-mentioned dbus-send command is issued, the slider in the GUI is correctly positioned to reflect the percentage requested, but the brightness is not always altered to match. Put another way, the dbus-send reliably only changes the slider position. However, the brightness is not always changed with the slider movement. The brightness changes sometimes, while sometimes remains unaltered. This happens randomly. Any suggestions? Any way to get pkexec to work? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1252507 Title: gsd-backlight-helper fails to change backlight To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1252507/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1252507] Re: gsd-backlight-helper fails to change backlight
I've reported the bug upstream as you've suggested. Here's the link: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=720370 Yes, this is similar to the bug ID you've provided, but I'm not sure if it's the same issue. I'm having the problem on my Desktop (All-in-one Desktop) machine and not a laptop. Furthermore, this issue was not present when the very same machine had Ubuntu 13.04 installed. All worked fine then. Only after upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10 has this issue arrisen. I upgraded using the ISO, and did a full re-format and re-encryption of the full disk. So this seems to be an Ubuntu 13.10 problem, and not an Ubuntu 13.04 problem, as the other bug states. ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #720370 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=720370 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1252507 Title: gsd-backlight-helper fails to change backlight To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1252507/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1238194] Re: keyboard doesn't work to enter password with encrypted partitions ubuntu 13.10 saucy
Thanks for your reply Felix. Yesterday, I too updated from Raring (13.04) to Saucy (13.10 ) without specifying saucy proposed or raring proposed and the update happed successfully. After the update, upon reboot, the wireless keyboard was detected ok and I could enter the password for the encrypted partion. On a separate note, attempting to install from the Saucy ISO CD image fails even when Download updates is selected. Perhpas this could be because the package had not been released to -updates as detailed above by Stéphane Graber. So installing from Saucy ISO CD image with Download Updates selected might work from today. (I had tried installing from ISO image yesterday). So, to install Saucy from an ISO CD Image, I first installed Raring (13.04) from the 13.04 ISO CD image, then download the 13.04 updates (without downloading the Raring updates, I kept getting errors while attempting to upgrade to Saucy), and then after the 13.04 updates were installed, I opted to upgrade to Saucy Salamander (13.10). All was ok from that point on. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1238194 Title: keyboard doesn't work to enter password with encrypted partitions ubuntu 13.10 saucy To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/1238194/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1252507] [NEW] gsd-backlight-helper fails to change backlight
Public bug reported: In Saucy Salamander (Ubuntu 13.10), nothing happens when programmatically changing the backlight using the command: pkexec /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gsd-backlight-helper --set-brightness 50 After issuing the above-mentioned command: 1. There is no difference in the screen brightness. 2. The slider in the System Settings - Brightness Lock remains unchanged. However, the value specified with --set-brightness argument is correctly reflected in the file: /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness and /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness Additionally, I'm using the proprietary Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators from fglrx-updates. (I can't use the X.org X Server open source driver, because I get a lot of visual artefacts / screen refresh problems when I use it). Furthermore, adjusting the brightness directly from the GUI, using the slider in System Settings - Brightness Lock works correctly, changing the screen brightness, as is expected. This change in screen brightness can be confirmed by issuing the following commands: pkexec /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gsd-backlight-helper --get-brightness and cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness and cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness Ubuntu Release: -- Description:Ubuntu 13.10 Release:13.10 Package version: - gnome-settings-daemon: Installed: 3.8.5-0ubuntu11.1 Candidate: 3.8.5-0ubuntu11.1 Version table: *** 3.8.5-0ubuntu11.1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy-updates/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 3.8.5-0ubuntu9 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy/main amd64 Packages Expected Behavior: --- After issuing the command pkexec /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gsd-backlight-helper --set-brightness XX, the following should happen: 1. [Bug 1249856] [NEW] udisks unmount and detach return exit status zero upon failure
Public bug reported: When the unmounting or detaching of an external USB flash drive (Pen drive) fails, using the udisks command, an exit status of SUCCESS (zero) is incorrectly returned. Steps to reproduce: 1. Check that the external USB flash drive is mounted: $ mount | grep ^/dev/sdb1 /dev/sdb1 on /media/mody/C207-484B type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uid=1000,gid=1000,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=1,showexec,flush,uhelper=udisks2) 2. Ensure that the partition /dev/sdb1 is in use. To do so, simply open another terminal and move into it: $ cd /media/mody/C207-484B/ 3. In a separate terminal attempt to unmount the partition that is in use: $ udisks --unmount /dev/sdb1 Unmount failed: Cannot unmount because file system on device is busy $ echo $? 0 Another test $ udisks --unmount /dev/sdb1 echo successfully unmonted || echo Failed to unmount Unmount failed: Cannot unmount because file system on device is busy successfully unmonted 4. Similarly run the test for udisks --detach like so: $ udisks --detach /dev/sdb; echo $? Detach failed: One or more partitions are busy on /dev/sdb 0 As you can see, clearly the udisks --unmount and the udisks --detach commands fail, but the exit status returned is 0 or Success. This is incorrect behavior. The echo $? should return a non-zero value. Additional information: 1) The release of Ubuntu used: Description:Ubuntu 13.04 Release:13.04 2) The version of udisks in use: udisks: Installed: 1.0.4-7build1 Candidate: 1.0.4-7build1 Version table: *** 1.0.4-7build1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ raring/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 3) What you expected to happen: When udisks --unmount and udisks --detach fail, the exit status should return non-zero, indicating Failure. 4) What happened instead When udisks --unmount and udisks --detach fail, the exit status currently returs zero, indicating Success. ** Affects: udisks (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: udisks -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1249856 Title: udisks unmount and detach return exit status zero upon failure To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udisks/+bug/1249856/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1066376] Re: keyboard doesn't work to enter password with panda and encrypted partitions ubuntu
I agree. I installed Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander) today using the 64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop image. I opted to erase everything on disk and do a fresh install. During installation, I opted to encrypt the hard disk and also my home folder. The installation succeeded and I was prompted as usual to reboot. However, after the reboot, my wireless keyboard was not detected and so could not enter the pass-phrase to continue booting Ubuntu. Finally I reverted back to Ubuntu 13.04, which does not have this issue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1066376 Title: keyboard doesn't work to enter password with panda and encrypted partitions ubuntu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/base-installer/+bug/1066376/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
