[Bug 917629] [NEW] MySQL Server 5.1 fails to start after install

2012-01-17 Thread Manson Thomas
Public bug reported:

On a fresh an newly installed server, ubuntu 11.10 x64,

I install mysql server with the following command as root :

aptitue update
aptitude full-upgrade
... (update last available package)

aptitude install mysql-server-5.1

Install ask for root password, the complete.

MySQL starts, create the system database and fails due to a syntax error and
then shutdown.
Next startup fails also as it says the table plugin already exists.

Thomas

[Bug 583310] [NEW] service command should report more information on failure

2010-05-20 Thread Manson Thomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sysvinit-utils

tho...@home:/etc/mysql$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release:10.04

sysvinit-utils : 2.87dsf-4ubuntu17

Hi,

Lately I was facing this bug :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mysql-dfsg-5.1/+bug/573318

This involved specifically how services are started.

In the case of mysql :

From my understanding, the service command process /etc/init/mysql.conf

Run the pre-start script, start the service and run the post-init
script if pre-start is ok.

On the mysql case, the pre-init script fails because /etc/mysql/my.cnf
was missing (the fact that it's missing is the point of the bug mention
at the beginning of this bug).

this command return 1 instead of 0
[ -r $HOME/my.cnf ]

And all we get is this message:

start: Job failed to start

This just informs that the service couldn't start, but there is no clue about
why it did fail.
There's is absolutely nothing logged about this failure despite this in
deamon.log :

May 17 19:05:28 sd1 init: mysql pre-start process (4506) terminated with
status 1

but still, it doesn't help the admin to solve the issue (ok we know that
pre-init script exists and it fails).

What I had to do to find out what is going wrong is :
1/ understand how the service command works
2/ understand how /etc/init/*.conf scritps works
3/ execute the pre init script to see where it fails

which is not straight forward.

We need that pre-init and post-init script reports verbosely the
failures on stdout or at least in deamon.log so that error can be fix
quicker (and in these case, it can be stressfull to see that a service
won’t start without knowing why).

This could be done by catching what the script writes out stderr and
then display this to the user and in the logs. (or any other mean, but
we need a detailed reports of the failure)

Anyhow, ubuntu is by far my favourite distribution and I try to spread its use
every time I have the occasion.
Thomas.

[Bug 573318] Re: mysql server will not start

2010-05-18 Thread Manson Thomas
@thecapsaicinkid is your file readable ?

because if you look at the pre-start script it makes the following check
:

pre-start script
#Sanity checks
[ -r $HOME/my.cnf ]
[ -d /var/run/mysqld ] || install -m 755 -o mysql -g root -d /var/run/mysqld
LC_ALL=C BLOCKSIZE= df --portability /var/lib/mysql/. | tail -n 1 | awk '{
exit ($44096) }'
end script

What you can do is :

su - mysql
export HOME=/etc/mysql

and try to run the command and check which one return false ( something
!= 0)

ex:
$[ -r $HOME/my.cnf ]
$echo $?
0

What you can do is :

su - mysql

!= 0)

ex:
$[ -r $HOME/my.cnf ]
$echo $?

Hi,

2010-01-14 Thread Manson Thomas
I'm mean what cviniciusm reports on 2009-11-12, affects me too in the
exact same way.

It seems to be a recent bug, because some of my server on which logwatch
was installed for a while do not have the issue.

On a working server :

tho...@home:/home/special/thomas/emule/done$ locate header.html
/etc/logwatch/conf/html/header.html

And I also largely agree that all logwatch conf should be under /etc/logwatch
(both standart config and custom modification), it's very disturbing to have to
search where the conf is for this very package.

Customizing feature is a good thing, but configuration should be where
configuration is usually placed : in /etc

When I first installed logwatch I found it very strange to configure
something in /var/something.

[Bug 358054] Re: no block devices found after an upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 on a soft RAID1 system

2009-04-09 Thread Manson Thomas

I've succeeded in booting my system like before the upgrade (with kde...) .

On busybox console,

I typed :

mdadm -As (--assemble --scan)

so that it create /dev/mdX devices.

then type exit and it resume the boot process, which succeed as the raid
device are up.

but this won't fix the problem (on reboot still the same issue), but at least
I've my system back...

Now I need to find out what to do so that it boot normally without
falling to busybox.

Also there must be an issue in the upgrade process that make my kubuntu
box loose the raid config at boot time.

[Bug 358054] [NEW] no block devices found after an upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 on a soft RAID1 system

2009-04-08 Thread Manson Thomas
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I've decided to upgrade to kubuntu 9.04(64bit) from kubuntu 8.10(64bit)
on the following system :

P5N32-E Sli plus motherboard
C2D 6250
4GB of RAM
2x 250GB SATA, RAID1 software for linux (sdc, sdd)
2x150GB Raptor SATA Raid0 for windows (fake raid from motherboard) (sda, sdb)

I've setup my kubuntu with the alternate CD with a software RAID1).

I run as told the update-manager -d command.

Nothing to report on the upgrade (just ask me what to do with the vim
conf file). The system was running well before the upgrade (and as
already been upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10)

On reboot I have this message:

no block devices found (4 times)
Gave up waiting for root device.
ALERT! /dev/md3 does not exist. dropping to a shell!

I've tryed to reboot with the fake raid for windows disabled (as it was
in troubleshouting). no change.

on busybox (which I get after the errors):
in dmesg output I can see these kind of message:

sdd : sdd1 sdd2 6attept to access beyond end of device
sda: rw=0 want=586067137, limit=293046768
Buffer I/O error on device sda1, logical block 293033536
(but these kind of message appears on gparted livecd)

in ls /dev, I can see the and sdcX sddX partitions are here.

I've no clue on how to bring my system back... (i'm searching)...

[Bug 358054] Re: no block devices found after an upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 on a soft RAID1 system

2009-04-08 Thread Manson Thomas
I've tryed to reboot with the fake raid for windows disabled (as it was in
troubleshouting). no change.
(disabled in the bios)
Note that gparted still saw the hard drives so maybe I've to retry with the
drives unplugged

[Bug 249824] Re: [intrepid] IPv6 unusable

2008-12-03 Thread Manson Thomas
Hi Matt,

Thanks very very much for the backport to Intrepid, my life is getting better
now ;)

I've installed the patch on my production secondary DNS server and it
successfully solved the issue.

  One question :

I've you're patch repository in my /etc/apt/sources.list.
When the patch will be generally available on intrepedid, what are the
steps for me to return in the intrepid branch (without loosing the fix (or not
for too long time)) ?

  Thanks again,
Thomas.

[Bug 249824] Re: [intrepid] IPv6 unusable

2008-12-02 Thread Manson Thomas
Will anybody have the decency to answer ? any ubuntero here ?

I had to disable my secondary DNS server for dozens of .fr. domains
because of this bug.

Some people are becoming upset and I totally agree with that.

Please, give an answer or a decent workaround.

Thanks

2008-11-19 Thread Manson Thomas
Hi,

From Adam Track from the Bind mailing list, told me :

I think BIND from Ubuntu distribution is not compiled as GNU source
(with _GNU_SOURCE macro defined). It is needed to get IPv6 working.
The best solution is to open ticket in Ubuntu bug tracker.

[Bug 249824] Re: [intrepid] IPv6 unusable

2008-11-18 Thread Manson Thomas
Hi,

I reproduce this bug on a Secondary DNS Server, ubuntu x86-64 8.10.
Thinks were ok on 8.04 and after upgrade I get this message in the log :

Nov 18 13:36:11 ns1 named[32579]: no IPv6 interfaces found

while I'm on a machine with both ipv4 and ipv6 activated.

Does anyone have an idea of when the fix will be available on apt-get upgrade
?
Is there a mean to get the fix earlier to test it ?

Note : I can provide some more info on my server or make some test if
I'm asked to do so ;)
