Thanks for the hint, Daniel. I have been using aptitude for over 10 years now. It's still the best package manager I know and I hate seeing it deteriorate in such a way. [Bug 1021829] [NEW] Strange choice of system timezone as default
Public bug reported: evolution uses something called system timezone per default. This appears to be the timezone defined by /etc/localtime. This is odd, and entirely different from all other software, that uses $TZ, and only looks at /etc/localtime as a fallback. Explanation: I use UTC for /etc/localtime, because logs, statistics etc. should be recorded in UTC (being a monotonic timescale). Local time is only for users, so I set the TZ environment variable at login time. [Bug 539857] [NEW] mountall sometimes doesn ’t mount all filesystems
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mountall k...@isis:~$ dpkg -s mountall | egrep -e ^V Version: 2.8 Sometimes mountall doesn’t mount all my filesystems. Recently I have been rebooting my system at least daily so that I’m better able to test for bugs in lucid. The system has one internal disk (sda, which holds /, /home, /boot) and one disk in a docking station (sdb, which holds /srv/data and swap). /, /home and /srv/data are encrypted with LUKS, swap is encrypted as a raw dm-crypt volume with a volatile key. Sometimes in the docked configuration /srv/data and swap aren’t mounted during system boot. I guess this happens with a probability of about one in at least fifteen or twenty attempts to boot. As you can see from the attached log (see dmesg), sdb is discovered early enough during boot (I suppose long before I enter the passphrase for /). Oddly enough, when I start mountall manually, there are no complications with mounting /srv/data and swap. (see mountall). I have had quite a lot of problems with boot order/dependency and related interactions, see also #538902 and #529230 ** Affects: mountall (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- mountall sometimes doesn’t mount all filesystems https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/539857 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 529822] [NEW] Boot hangs indefinitely (regression)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: cryptsetup Description:Ubuntu lucid (development branch) Release:10.04 My system no longer boots, I believe after this upgrade in Lucid: [INSTALL, DEPENDENCIES] plymouth [UPGRADE] cryptsetup 2:1.1.0~rc2-1ubuntu11 - 2:1.1.0~rc2-1ubuntu12 I usually run with the boot options quiet splash removed, and this worked fine in Karmic and in Lucid up to that upgrade. Now after the output Running scripts/init-top I should be asked for my passphrase for /, however, nothing happens. With SysRq+T I can see that cryptsetup is running, however. With splash I am asked for my passphrase but no input is accepted (tried with the correct keymap and the default keymap). This is a regression from Karmic. My setup is fairly innocent, /boot is unencrypted, / and /home are encrypted with LUKS, swap is encrypted with a random key and there is another data partition, encrypted with LUKS (which is new). I can still boot with my old initramfs that I restored from backup. ** Affects: cryptsetup (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Boot hangs indefinitely (regression) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/529822 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 525114] [NEW] -D introduces corruption in directories
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: e2fsprogs Package: e2fsprogs Version: 1.41.10-1ubuntu1 Running e2fsck -D introduces corruption in one of my filesystems (ext4). This Friday after deleting/moving/renamig lots of files on my generic data partition (ext4, ~450GB) and hot-removing the drive (while the filesystem was not mounted), I decided to perform a filesystem check, just to be on the safe side. So I ran e2fsck -v -f -D [FSCK 1]. It fixed some minor inconsistencies (I cannot remember any details, I suppose it was incorrect i_size). Today, for no particular reason, I ran the filesystem check again [FSCK 2] (after using the filesystem, and, after adding the directory /kosh/.cache/kosh/classified/heap/ (see later)), and it reported errors in one directory (I have used the letters X and Y in several places instead of characters [A-Za-z-] for reasons of privacy, you may request unaltered logs if you need them): (this is only an excerpt) e2fsck 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009) Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes Pass 2: Checking directory structure First entry ' YYY YYY YYY' (inode=13369382) in directory inode 13369351 (/kosh/.cache/kosh/classified/Porn/unsorted/pics/XXX XX XXX) should be '.' DATA: * FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED * DATA: ** WARNING: Filesystem still has errors ** Oh my, so it modified the filesystem (the directory optimisation was done). I mounted it and looked at the files, everything seemed to be okay. I unmounted and performed the same check again [FSCK 3], with the intention of just hitting 'y', this time. But I didn’t, because apparently the optimisation had introduced a new error: e2fsck 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009) Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes Pass 2: Checking directory structure First entry '#spameggs-2006.log' (inode=2884760) in directory inode 2884755 (/kosh/.cache/kosh/classified/heap/home/marc/nces/nce7/home/marc/.irssi/logs/QuakeNet) should be '.' Fixy? Quit This is quite interesting, because I have put the directory tree there between FSCK 1 and FSCK 2, and I didn’t do much between FSCK 2 and FSCK 3, so the error must have been introduced by FSCK 2. This time, the problematic entry has # as first character and is not a directory. In a directory listing, both and # sort before . and .., so maybe that’s the problem. [Bug 439922] [NEW] System unusably slow
Public bug reported: My system is unusably slow after the last kernel upgrade in Karmic. With the latest kernel in karmic, the system takes about 15 minutes to boot. At first I thought it was a hardware problem, but in the previous kernel version the problem doesn’t exist. It ist not an interrupt latency or interrupt frequency problem, because powertop shows no unusual interrupt load and top shows CPU usage not in system or iowait, but in user time. openssl speed bf shows about 400kB/s blowfish encryption, while this should be in excess of 2kB/s. top uses about 25% CPU with its default update interval, so it isn’t just some process that hogs the CPU, it rather feels like the CPU being much too slow, so that things just take longer (in CPU time) to complete. It is the kind of behaviour I would expect if the memory bus were running at 2% of its normal frequency, or similar. The bug occurs in linux-image-2.6.31-11-generic 2.6.31-11.36 It does not occur in linux-image-2.6.31-10-generic 2.6.31-10.35 Nothing in the changelog between those versions indicates any relevant change. uname and lspci output is from the unaffected kernel version, kern.log is from the affected version. If you need any specific information, feel free to ask, I will reboot and test in the broken kernel, but it’s painful, and I will not wait for X to start. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- System unusably slow https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/439922 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
