[Bug 1617468] [NEW] Package contains files in /usr/@DATADIRNAME@/locale

2016-08-26 Thread Marc A. Donges
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu Yakkety Yak (development branch)

The package gnome-system-tools contains files in
/usr/@DATADIRNAME@/locale which is probably wrong. It is the only
package that has files there. Looks like a variable name from a template
engine.

[Bug 1059756] Re: Gtalk does not work in gajim 0.15 (Quantal)

Indeed, it works now, although there was no update of gajim. There is
also no difference in the server replies.

gajim just initiates starttls now instead of throwing an error:

2012-10-04 Thread Marc A. Donges

I have the same problem with an original GMail account since upgrading

[Bug 1046586] [NEW] colord causes high IO load for half a minute during boot

2012-09-05 Thread Marc A. Donges

[Bug 1027530] [NEW] mplayer2 uses 100% CPU during pause

2012-07-21 Thread Marc A. Donges
Public bug reported:

Version: 2.0-426-gc32b3ed-2

The version of mplayer2 in precise uses 100% CPU while a video is
paused. When resuming play, CPU usage drops again.

The problem does not exist in the version from quantal

CPU usage drops to 0 during pause, as expected.

[Bug 831768] Re: aptitude cannot handle conflicts with multiarch enabled

2012-07-07 Thread Marc A. Donges
Thanks for the hint, Daniel.

I have been using aptitude for over 10 years now. It's still the best
package manager I know and I hate seeing it deteriorate in such a way.

That's why I have offered 100€ on Fossfactory for fixing this bug[1]. I
know this is alone is not enough. But 333 people are affected by this
bug (according to Launchpad). With a few of dollars from each one of us
it should be possible.

[Bug 1021829] [NEW] Strange choice of system timezone as default

2012-07-06 Thread Marc A. Donges
Public bug reported:

evolution uses something called system timezone per default. This
appears to be the timezone defined by /etc/localtime.

This is odd, and entirely different from all other software, that uses
$TZ, and only looks at /etc/localtime as a fallback.

Explanation: I use UTC for /etc/localtime, because logs, statistics etc.
should be recorded in UTC (being a monotonic timescale).

Local time is only for users, so I set the TZ environment variable at
login time. This works fine with GNOME, all CLI programs, Firefox etc.
Evolution seems to be the only exception.

[Bug 864123] Re: libpciaccess0:386 is uninstallable on amd64

libpciaccess0 is not a multiarch binary package, so libpciaccess0:i386

This basically breaks i386 compatibility for amd64, as ia32libs

That was version 0.13-0ubuntu2 (lucid) back then. I patched my version

mainline/v2.6.34-rc2-karmic/linux-
image-2.6.34-020634rc2-generic_2.6.34-020634rc2_i386.deb

crashes less than one second into the boot.

In

mainline/v2.6.32.9/linux-
image-2.6.32-02063209-generic_2.6.32-02063209_i386.deb

the problem still exists.

In

mainline/v2.6.33/linux-
image-2.6.33-020633-generic_2.6.33-020633_i386.deb

the problem is gone (transferred several Gigabytes with SSH without a
MAC error), however, I cannot use that kernel because wl.ko for the WLAN
interface Broadcom BCM4312 fails to build for it.

I forgot: in mainline/v2.6.33/linux-
image-2.6.33-020633-generic_2.6.33-020633_i386.deb, gso is switched *on*
but the problem is gone.

Can anyone else please confirm this?

Also, after today, I will no longer have access to the affected hardware
(sold), so I will mark myself unaffected by this bug. Would someone else
please cooperate with the maintainer so that a fixed Kernel lands in
Ubuntu?

[Bug 539857] [NEW] mountall sometimes doesn ’t mount all filesystems

2010-03-16 Thread Marc A. Donges
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mountall

k...@isis:~$ dpkg -s mountall | egrep -e ^V
Version: 2.8

Sometimes mountall doesn’t mount all my filesystems.

Recently I have been rebooting my system at least daily so that I’m
better able to test for bugs in lucid.

The system has one internal disk (sda, which holds /, /home, /boot) and
one disk in a docking station (sdb, which holds /srv/data and swap). /,
/home and /srv/data are encrypted with LUKS, swap is encrypted as a raw
dm-crypt volume with a volatile key.

Sometimes in the docked configuration /srv/data and swap aren’t mounted
during system boot. I guess this happens with a probability of about one
in at least fifteen or twenty attempts to boot.

As you can see from the attached log (see dmesg), sdb is discovered
early enough during boot (I suppose long before I enter the passphrase
for /).

Oddly enough, when I start mountall manually, there are no complications
with mounting /srv/data and swap. (see mountall).

I have had quite a lot of problems with boot order/dependency and
related interactions, see also #538902 and #529230

Yes, of course. But I have not yet encountered my original problem after
the last update of plymouth (X dying far (even hours) into a session
when I hit enter), so this may in fact be fixed.

Instead, gdm now dies reliably when I hit enter for the first time during
that boot (which is new).

Does plymouth show a graphical logo or do you see Ubuntu 10.04 written
 in text?

Neither. I do not use splash as a boot option, as mentioned earlier in…
this bug.

[Bug 529822] [NEW] Boot hangs indefinitely (regression)

2010-02-28 Thread Marc A. Donges
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cryptsetup

Description:Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release:10.04

My system no longer boots, I believe after this upgrade in Lucid:

[INSTALL, DEPENDENCIES] plymouth
[UPGRADE] cryptsetup 2:1.1.0~rc2-1ubuntu11 - 2:1.1.0~rc2-1ubuntu12

I usually run with the boot options quiet splash removed, and this
worked fine in Karmic and in Lucid up to that upgrade. Now after the
output Running scripts/init-top I should be asked for my passphrase
for /, however, nothing happens. With SysRq+T I can see that cryptsetup
is running, however.

With splash I am asked for my passphrase but no input is accepted
(tried with the correct keymap and the default keymap).

This is a regression from Karmic.

My setup is fairly innocent, /boot is unencrypted, / and /home are
encrypted with LUKS, swap is encrypted with a random key and there is
another data partition, encrypted with LUKS (which is new).

I can still boot with my old initramfs that I restored from backup.

[Bug 529318] Re: transmission-daemon cannot be uninstalled

2010-02-27 Thread Marc A. Donges
I’m sorry, I misinterpreted that output. transmission-daemon is removed,
but it leaves behind statoverride configuration, breaking dpkg (output
of subsequent package installation attempt):

dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
syntax error: unknown user 'debian-transmission' in statoverride file
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

Removing all lines from /var/lib/dpkg/statoverride that mention the user
debian-transmission fixes the issue:

debian-transmission debian-transmission 4775
/var/lib/transmission-daemon/downloads
debian-transmission debian-transmission 4750 /var/lib/transmission-daemon/info
debian-transmission debian-transmission 4750

[Bug 525114] [NEW] -D introduces corruption in directories

2010-02-20 Thread Marc A. Donges
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: e2fsprogs

Package: e2fsprogs
Version: 1.41.10-1ubuntu1

Running e2fsck -D introduces corruption in one of my filesystems
(ext4).

This Friday after deleting/moving/renamig lots of files on my generic
data partition (ext4, ~450GB) and hot-removing the drive (while the
filesystem was not mounted), I decided to perform a filesystem check,
just to be on the safe side. So I ran e2fsck -v -f -D [FSCK 1]. It
fixed some minor inconsistencies (I cannot remember any details, I
suppose it was incorrect i_size).

Today, for no particular reason, I ran the filesystem check again [FSCK
2] (after using the filesystem, and, after adding the directory
/kosh/.cache/kosh/classified/heap/ (see later)), and it reported
errors in one directory (I have used the letters X and Y in several
places instead of characters [A-Za-z-] for reasons of privacy, you may
request unaltered logs if you need them): (this is only an excerpt)

e2fsck 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009)
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Pass 2: Checking directory structure
First entry ' YYY YYY YYY' (inode=13369382) in directory inode
13369351 (/kosh/.cache/kosh/classified/Porn/unsorted/pics/XXX XX
  XXX) should be '.'
Fixy? no

[note the whitespace (0x20) as the first character of YYY*]

Invalid inode number for '.' in directory inode 13369351.
Fixy? no

Directory entry for '.' in /kosh/.cache/kosh/classified/Porn/unsorted/pics/XXX
XX XXX (13369351) is big.
Splity? no

Second entry '.' (inode=13369351) in directory inode 13369351 should be '..'
Fixy? no

Entry '..' in /kosh/.cache/kosh/classified/Porn/unsorted/pics/XXX XX
XXX (13369351) is duplicate '..' entry.
Fixy? no

Entry '..' in /kosh/.cache/kosh/classified/Porn/unsorted/pics/XXX XX
XXX (13369351) is duplicate '..' entry.
Fixy? no

Entry '..' in /kosh/.cache/kosh/classified/Porn/unsorted/pics/XXX XX
XXX (13369351) is a link to directory
/kosh/.cache/kosh/classified/Porn/unsorted/pics (7864326).
Cleary? no

[This is correct, .. is a link to the parent directory. There was a
second pair of directory+subdirectory with the same problem, first
character of the subdirectory was also 0x20]

Pass 3: Checking directory connectivity
'..' in /kosh/.cache/kosh/classified/Porn/unsorted/pics/XXX XX
XXX (13369351) is The NULL inode (0), should be
/kosh/.cache/kosh/classified/Porn/unsorted/pics (7864326).
Fixy? no

Unconnected directory inode 13369382 (.../ YYY YYY YYY)
Connect to /lost+foundy? no

'..' in ... (13369382) is /kosh/.cache/kosh/classified/Porn/unsorted/pics/XXX
XX XXX (13369351), should be The NULL inode (0).
Fixy? no

Pass 3A: Optimising directories
^C^CDATA: e2fsck cancelled.

DATA: * FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *

DATA: ** WARNING: Filesystem still has errors **

Oh my, so it modified the filesystem (the directory optimisation was
done).

I mounted it and looked at the files, everything seemed to be okay. I
unmounted and performed the same check again [FSCK 3], with the
intention of just hitting 'y', this time. But I didn’t, because
apparently the optimisation had introduced a new error:

e2fsck 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009)
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Pass 2: Checking directory structure
First entry '#spameggs-2006.log' (inode=2884760) in directory inode 2884755
(/kosh/.cache/kosh/classified/heap/home/marc/nces/nce7/home/marc/.irssi/logs/QuakeNet)
 should be '.'
Fixy? Quit

This is quite interesting, because I have put the directory tree there
between FSCK 1 and FSCK 2, and I didn’t do much between FSCK 2 and FSCK
3, so the error must have been introduced by FSCK 2.

This time, the problematic entry has # as first character and is not a
directory. In a directory listing, both and # sort before . and
.., so maybe that’s the problem.

Will “fixing” the first entry not being . remove that entry or put it
somewhere else?

[Bug 404708] Re: Broadcom BCM5906M ethernet adapter (tg3) hangs under heavy tcp load (bittorrent) when generic segmentation offload (gso) is in use

…and I just discovered that it is even worse than previously thought.
The bug introduces silent data corruption.

I was just trying to update my backup (this time over Ethernet instead
of WLAN, because I added a lot of data) but it never remotely finished
because SSH noticed a data corruption in the network transmission:

rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at io.c(1525) [generator=3.0.6]

Of course, the problem disappeared after I deactivated gso.

[Bug 439922] [NEW] System unusably slow

2009-10-01 Thread Marc A. Donges
Public bug reported:

My system is unusably slow after the last kernel upgrade in Karmic.

With the latest kernel in karmic, the system takes about 15 minutes to
boot. At first I thought it was a hardware problem, but in the previous
kernel version the problem doesn’t exist.

It ist not an interrupt latency or interrupt frequency problem, because
powertop shows no unusual interrupt load and top shows CPU usage not in
system or iowait, but in user time.

openssl speed bf shows about 400kB/s blowfish encryption, while this
should be in excess of 2kB/s. top uses about 25% CPU with its
default update interval, so it isn’t just some process that hogs the
CPU, it rather feels like the CPU being much too slow, so that things
just take longer (in CPU time) to complete.

It is the kind of behaviour I would expect if the memory bus were
running at 2% of its normal frequency, or similar.

The bug occurs in
linux-image-2.6.31-11-generic 2.6.31-11.36

It does not occur in
linux-image-2.6.31-10-generic 2.6.31-10.35

Nothing in the changelog between those versions indicates any relevant
change.

uname and lspci output is from the unaffected kernel version, kern.log
is from the affected version.

If you need any specific information, feel free to ask, I will reboot
and test in the broken kernel, but it’s painful, and I will not wait for
X to start.

[Bug 437897] [NEW] dosfslabel improperly handles localized input

2009-09-27 Thread Marc A. Donges
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dosfstools

dosfslabel improperly handles localized input. In a UTF-8 locale, the
following command fails with an improper error message:

k...@galileo:~$ dosfslabel /dev/sdc1 ä
dosfslabel: labels can be no longer than 11 characters

I entered only nine characters, so the error message is misleading.
Obviously, dosfslabel just uses the 18 octets of the UTF-8
representation of ä, which is incorrect in most cases (when a
non 8bit locale is being used).

Please fix this on a layer of your choice.
