[Bug 215644] [NEW] Hardy: Kubuntu daily ISO install partitioner doesn't allow mounting point definition
Public bug reported: Clean install of Hardy Kubuntu AMD64 daily ISO. Once one reaches the partitioning screen and selects manual partitioning one cannot change the mounting points. The only way to change the default mounting points (/dev/hda1, /dev/hda2, etc.) is to delete all partitions and recreate them. For someone who wants to set up his own partitioning scheme with things like a seperate /home /boot /usr etc. this is very cumbersome. [Bug 215641] [NEW] Hardy: daily ISO doesn't install Grub with installation
Public bug reported: Clean install of Hardy daily ISO (either Ubuntu or Kubuntu) AMD64. Install proceeds as expected (aside from one bug in the Kubuntu install), install seems to finish prematurely (progress bar is not finished) and the system starts the liveCD. (btw, I'm clueless as to why one should do that). Upon reboot, the system hangs with a GRUB error 15: file not found. It turns out that in /boot there is no /grub folder and there are no grub files to be found. Probably a missing menu.lst and such. [Bug 135194] Re: xsane does not recognize HP
Did you check your user's permissions? There was a bug earlier in beta where the user was not automatically added to the groups "use tape drives", "use scanner" and "send and recieve faxes". I had the exact same error message and adding those groups to my profile fixed it, the detection part that is. The sane and sane-tools actually allowed my scanner to scan, albeit not always reliably. Go to: System>Administration>Users & Groups, unlock and enter your password, select your user and click properties, then on the second tab select all groups that haven't been selected. Murat: Sorry to have taken so much time, been a way a while and have also been hammering Kubuntu Hardy for some days. The exact keys (I have to work by heart here) were: autoplay_dvd_command autoplay_vcd_command They both have a checkmark key also, but I don't remember their exact names. It was something along the lines of: autoplay_dvd autoplay_vcd I don't know of any others in particular that seem to be ignored. These are the ones I looked at specifically while going through my own personal setup for an installation test to see if all went well. Sorry I can't be of more help. And it does sound to me that Sebastian is right. Probably the editor itself is not bugged, but for some reason these values are either ignored or taken from another config file. -- Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/203877 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 109727] Re: xscan not connecting with scanner and crashing
I am having the same problem, also with my all-in-one HP printer/scanner. HP-Toolbox is suffering from the same problem and I think they are related. If I start kooka as root from a terminal I get this error message: Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-marc" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0. Error: "/tmp/ksocket-marc" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0. Changing permissions to rw doesn't change anything though. I think it's the ownership that is the problem here. (I'm not 100% sure though) Oddly enough if I start kooka with root permission it does detect my scanner properly. The same goes for HP-Toolbox. Both work fine when started with root permissions but my regular user cannot use my scanner. This leads me to believe that this is a permission issue. [Bug 209772] Re: Kubuntu Hardy: Dolphin: unable to save bookmarks
It seems only to happen when someone as root has used dolphin. One can solve the bug by using rm /home/marc/.kde/share/apps/d3lphin/bookmarks.xml at the terminal. Clearly, it was trying to overwrite the one that belonged to root. Obviously the system should deal with this in such a fashion that it shouldn't be a problem to switch from root to regular user. That is, if this is possible. If this turns out to be difficult, one could opt for the system automatically not saving these type of settings for a root user, considering that Kubuntu doesn't know a root user account where one normally would store these settings. -- Kubuntu Hardy: Dolphin: unable to save bookmarks https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/209772 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 203877] Re: Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system
So does this mean that ignored settings in gconf-editor are considered a bug or not? Sorry if I came off harsh, but it seems to me that I was not the one bringing up other tools or options. To reply to your statement that there are some applications that don't show up in the (new) nautilus tab: on my system not one application shows up. But I'll file a seperate bug report on that one. Don't get me wrong, but it tends to get a bit frustrating that I first have to fight to convince your team that something is not working is a bug. Lets just get the bug fixed. [Bug 203877] Re: Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system
Right, then why isn't VLC listed as a possible application to launch upon entry of a DVD player? The only options I have in Nautilus are: 1) Open Movie Player 2) Open Folder 3) Do Nothing 4) Ask what to do. Which gives a list of the 3 previous ones. So, how do I define VLC (or any other application for that matter) as my preferred application to open upon inserting a DVD? Still, I cannot select another player than Totem the way the system is set up. I'm starting to wonder why gconf-editor clearly has been redered useless. Are you telling me that Gnome is supposed to restrain the user to the default selection made by the devs? Excuse me for saying so, but that would be worse than the products I abandoned because I didn't like them. So at this point I still have no way to set VLC as my default player for launching when I enter a DVD. If someone can enlighten me what it is I oversaw, please let me know, but replying with facts that are incorrect doesn't solve the problem I inducated. There is a bug to solve here! In the forums people are already talking about it, why not fix it? However you guys do it is not of my concern, but I do want the same functionality, to say the least, that I had in Gutsy. Now I'm looking at a downgraded system in certain regards. Please consider the fact that the more you limit the user the smaller your audience will be. The way things are now one cannot possibly change certain parts of the configuration at all anymore. This is a bad thing for both Ubuntu and the Linux community. One can add functionality, improve it, but not take it out. That is a guarantee for getting unhappy users. [Bug 207409] Re: [HARDY] xserver-xorg does not auto-configure correctly
I have to agree with komputes here. It is absolutely vital that there are text-based tools to configure xorg.conf. We are not looking forward to a "Windows" type philosophy being implemented into Linux where the system knows best and when it doesn't, all you can do is curse and pull out your hair. Linux is about flexibility and having the option to do things in several ways, where you can pick the one that suits you best. Adding an autoconfig tool is nice and good, but one cannot take out the other tools. That is effectively downgrading your system. Also, if we have to bring up these kind of discussions, I really start to think that there is a huge misconception on behalf of the developers with regard to what the user wants. The user wants usability, ease of use, flexibility and compatibility. Taking out those tools eliminates all those factors if the autoconfig tools happens to miss-identify your video card. So yes, put the tools back as a fall back for those less fortunate ones, who will at least have a chance to use Ubuntu. Or are you suggesting that from the Ubuntu team no one really cares that there will be users who want to use Ubuntu but can't, simply because of wrong policies being used by the team? Really, you don't want to build yourself a reputation of just doing what you think the user wants and is best for him/her, while ignoring their actual needs and wishes. That will really rapidly build a really bad reputation for this OS. -- [HARDY] xserver-xorg does not auto-configure correctly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/207409 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 203877] Re: Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system
The key values set and read by gconf-editor are correct. However, Gnome ignores these settings. So, either gconf-editor is not handling it properly, or another application is overriding the settings of the gconf-editor (or gnome for that matter). Of course I don't know how Ubuntu handles this internally, but the place where I noticed the bug was when using gconf-editor. I'm not claiming it should be a bug there. For all I know it is related to other software, but I was hoping that this is where your expertise comes in. Whichever it is, the settings gconf-editor stores are (partly) not read/followed up by the system. That is the actual bug. Unfortunately my in dept knowledge of the Gnome desktop is not such that I would know which software (layers) deal with these settings. If I would have had any hints, I would have let you know. So it is not necessarily a bug in the editor itself. It is the place where I (and others) have noticed it though. Technically speaking it could be that the editor saves the settings on a server on the net somewhere and reads them fine, but Gnome never sees them. It could be that there are more than just one file with these kind of settings: one not being read by Gnome and one being read by Gnome, of which the editor edits the wrong one. And I can go on and on for a while like this. Anyway, I don't know where the actual bug lies, all I can do at this point is report what I noticed and which indicates a malfunction. I was hoping you would be able to find the actual bug with this information. [Bug 208340] Re: apport-gtk does not start from menu
Kjell, If you were to check again, then you will see that whatever menu item you un-select will show small italic. So I think my point still stands. Just for the sake of the discussion: 1) open System>Preferences>Main Menu 2) navigate to Office 3) unselect all (yes, all) menu items Result: All unselected menu items will be small italic. Note: I'm fine with your explanation that they are not supposed to be used for menu items, but if they don't show up any different than regular menu items, then how is a user supposed to know this? Can't you just not make them appear in alacarte? If it's a limitation/bug of that particular program, and you cannot change it, that's acceptable to me. However, presenting a user with a tool that does not do what it is supposed to (showing menu items instead of items that are no menu items) is a tool that has a bug in there. [Bug 203877] Re: Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system
Description: When settings are changed in gconf-editor, the system ignores those changes. (example of changing preferred player for autoplay_DVD) On a clean Ubuntu Hardy Beta installation follow these steps: 1) Install the VLC player with "sudo apt-get install vlc" 2) Start the gconf-editor as root with "gksudo gconf-editor" 3) Go to the following section: desktop>gnome>volume_manager However, do not expand that menu, select the top of that menu (so actually click on "volume_manager" 4) In the Key value window (the right window of the tool) scroll down to the value "autoplay_dvd_ command" 5) Right click the key value to the right of its name and select "edit" 6) Enter the new value /usr/bin/vlc dvd:// 7) Select "Ok" 8) Right click the field again and select "Set as Default" 9) Do the same for the key "autoplay_vcd_command" (I have tested these settings with both autoplay_dvd and autoplay_vcd checked and unchecked with the exact same results!) 10) Close gconf_editor. 11) Put a movie DVD in your DVD player and watch to see which application is being used by the system to play the movie. Result: You've guessed it: Totem is launched and plays (or rather: doesn't play) the movie. Expected result: Since gconf_editor is the only means we have in the Gnome desktop environment to change these values I would expect the system to respect the changes I've made and use my newly defined favorite DVD movie player when I enter a DVD movie, instead of ignoring it and launching the default one. Note: Technically speaking, in Ubuntu it is now impossible (don't know about manually editing config files, but I don't think that matches the Gnome philosophy to keep things simple for the user) to changed preferred applications. The only means that exist that actually allow you to change something is the Preferred Applications tool under System>Preferences. Low and behold, the old tab that allowed one to define these type of preferences has been removed. In the end, the user is stuck with the predefined settings and cannot change them. I would consider this a pretty big flaw in the system. Simplicity is one thing, but not allowing a user to customize his preferences at all, is another. This cannot enter into the live version because it will tick quite a few people off that they get their hands tied to their back by the system this way. I personally would not take it out of the menus personally and just move it. But I'm not the one to make this decision either. [Bug 203896] [NEW] Hardy: gnome-device-manager not installed by default
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-device-manager The tool gnome-device-manager doesn't seem to be installed by default under Hardy, even though in Gutsy it was. I think the tool should be installed in Hardy by default because it proves to be a very useful debugging tool for hardware functionality, especially for less experience users who are not comfortable with using terminal commands to debug hardware functionality. It was very practical to have this tool in Gutsy to have a quick glance to see how certain hardware was detected to see if there maybe something went wrong in case of problems. ** Affects: gnome-device-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Hardy: gnome-device-manager not installed by default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/203896 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 203871] Re: Hardy: gdmsetup crashes upon launch
Ok, this is a tricky request, since the only time this happens is right after a clean install of the current Hardy 64 bits ISO. And it is a one time only occurrence. Since it doesn't always crash the application, like this last time in my case, I obviously don't have a crash report. The next time I do a fresh install for testing purposes I'll certainly keep an eye out on this bug, but I'm sorry I cannot provide you with more info. In a previous installation it did crash, but there were quite a few bugs I reported (it was my first time using Hardy) and that one slipped through. The odd thing is that in previous installations at times I had to try to launch gdmsetup up to 3 times before it seemed to have fixed itself. As soon as I do get a crash report I will make sure to attach it, but at this time I don't have one. If there is another way in which I can verify what could be the culprit of this bug, please let me know and I'll be happy to help out. -- Hardy: gdmsetup crashes upon launch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/203871 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 203877] [NEW] Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gconf-editor When trying to change the default action upon loading a DVD (launching VLC as opposed by the default Totem player) those changes are clearly saved and remain in the configuration tool. However, the system completely ignores the new settings. Whether I make the new values 'default' or 'mandatory' doesn't matter at all, the system seems to completely ignore the changes in the settings and keep on executing the original values. It seems to me that either the system loads the original values from a different file than where gconf-editor is saving them, or for some reason original values seem to have changed visually in the gui, but in reality they haven't as far as it concerns Gnome configuration. When I use gconf-editor to edit certain settings I expect that to override any other settings in the Gnome environment. After some research I've found that certain settings in gconf-editor don't correspond with the settings of individual applications, which basically could confirm my suspicion that there are multiple configuration files with different values in different places. Or at least something along those lines. ** Affects: gconf-editor (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/203877 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 203871] [NEW] Hardy: gdmsetup crashes upon launch
Public bug reported: When, after a clean installation of the lastest Hardy alpha, one launches gdmsetup, it doesn't start (although it does indicate in the window list bar that it is launching) and gives this error message: gdmsetup[16146]: CRITICAL: Error opening file: No such file or directory It does this several times (about 20 in my case) and then in the end crashes or at times launches. The end result is that it takes literally minutes to launch or crash. Starting it up the second time it runs fine though. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Hardy: gdmsetup crashes upon launch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/203871 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 203625] Re: Hardy: Phillips webcam drivers not installed
Ok, it seems that this bug is caused by a wrong select of codec by some programs. So far I managed to get Ekiga working by switching to the V4L protocol (by default it was set to V4L 2). If no one else runs into the same problem this one can be closed. -- Hardy: Phillips webcam drivers not installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/203625 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 181242] Re: [Hardy]HP printer is not detected properly by HPLIP
I got the Hardy ISO for x64 yesterday, and this bug is still in there. I can print without a problem, even print a test page through the HP toolbox, but it keeps reporting a communication issue with it and is not working properly. Surely this cannot be hard to fix, like others stated on Gutsy it was working without a problem. Btw, 2.8.2-0ubuntu3 doesn't show up in Synaptic in the x64 version of Hardy. -- [Hardy]HP printer is not detected properly by HPLIP https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/181242 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 203620] [NEW] Gnome Theme Manager in Hardy is very buggy.
Public bug reported: In Hardy x64 So far I've noticed the following bugs: 1) There is a menu uption under Applications>Other which is called Theme Installer, which crashes upon launch. 2) Under System>Preferences>Appearance a lot of things are not working as they should: a) Themes (GTK) are installed without a preview icon. b) Murrine themes are often not installed correctly, come up with errors or one gets the message that they are installed while they are not. c) When customizing a theme none of the controls has a preview icon, colors cannot be edited (like I think was promised), window borders have no preview icons, icon sets have no preview icons, and some installed cursor themes are missing. All these should be working at least like they were under Gutsy, the way it is now, one cannot properly customize or use themes in general. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Gnome Theme Manager in Hardy is very buggy. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/203620 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 203617] [NEW] Hardy upgrade doesn't work as expected
Public bug reported: Upgrading Gutsy x64 to Hardy didn't work as explained in HOWTOs. 1) Changing all gutsy entries in sources.list to hardy. 2) sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get distro-upgrade (if I remember correctly) result: none Only after rebooting the computer one could select to upgrade to a newer version. In this case one could only do a partial upgrade. This in my case resulted in a completely messed up system. The only way to overcome this was to do a new clean install to get things working again. Direct result was a kernel that failed to load its variables, and that was basically the end of it. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Hardy upgrade doesn't work as expected https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/203617 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 203619] [NEW] Hardy install leaves one without menu bars
Public bug reported: Upon finishing a clean install of Hardy, running all current updates and rebooting afterwards, I had no menu bars at all anymore. Oddly enough, I could fix it by simply rebooting. Killing xserver wasn't sufficient, I actually had to reboot my system. The only thing I had done before the reboot after which my menu bars were gone was try to adjust the time in the clock in the menu bar which resulted in locking up the whole menu bar. I was forced to reboot. Related to this bug probably at some point was that my garbage-bin vanished from my menu bar. Also here a simple reboot fixed the issue.
