[Bug 1061195] Re: Can't create EWS or MAPI account

2012-10-20 Thread Marc Baas
I can confirm this bug. In my case relogging/rebooting doesn't do a
thing though.

I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 x64.

Pop email works fine, but with my Gmail account that is configured for
IMAPX, it doesn't show up.

When I go to the configuration files in my /home dir, it looks as if all
data is present for my account. For some reason it just doesn't show up
in Evolution.

Deleting all possible Evolution related folders in my /home dir did not
make any difference in my case though. Running in a terminal did not
show any config or setup related problems.

[Bug 191475] Re: [hardy] media tab in file management preferences missing applications

2008-04-18 Thread Marc Baas
As much as I appreciate reassuringlyoffensive's attempts to find a
proper workaround (you know me from the forums as "kivech"), doesn't it
make more sense to just add the VLC player to the list of possible DVD
players in Nautilus?

We are in RC already and this discussion has been going on for over a
month now. As much as I understand your pressure and how busy you guys
are (obviously at this stage of a release), it would save a lot of
people a lot of hassle if this could be put in before it becomes the
"official release".

I'm just updating this one as a reminder:

The way Hardy is now, I still cannot select the VLC player to be my
default player upon entry of a video DVD. We are at RC stage now and
this issue has still not been addressed.

Can you guys please look into this one, it affects a lot of people since
for a large group, VLC is the preferred DVD player over Totem. I'm
writing the same comment in the bug report of the VLC player that is not
listed as an option to pick for DVD player in the nautilus media tab

[Bug 215644] [NEW] Hardy: Kubuntu daily ISO install partitioner doesn't allow mounting point definition

2008-04-11 Thread Marc Baas
Public bug reported:

Clean install of Hardy Kubuntu AMD64 daily ISO.

Once one reaches the partitioning screen and selects manual partitioning
one cannot change the mounting points.

The only way to change the default mounting points (/dev/hda1,
/dev/hda2, etc.) is to delete all partitions and recreate them.

For someone who wants to set up his own partitioning scheme with things like a
seperate /home /boot /usr etc. this is very cumbersome.
I appreciate the option to indicate that one wants to format the partition when
selecting "edit" after having selected a partition, but now when you indicate
where you want that partition to be mounted it doesn't change the default one
at all.

[Bug 215641] [NEW] Hardy: daily ISO doesn't install Grub with installation

2008-04-11 Thread Marc Baas
Public bug reported:

Clean install of Hardy daily ISO (either Ubuntu or Kubuntu) AMD64.

Install proceeds as expected (aside from one bug in the Kubuntu
install), install seems to finish prematurely (progress bar is not
finished) and the system starts the liveCD. (btw, I'm clueless as to why
one should do that).

Upon reboot, the system hangs with a GRUB error 15: file not found.

It turns out that in /boot there is no /grub folder and there are no
grub files to be found. Probably a missing menu.lst and such.

I have tested this with both the Ubuntu and Kubuntu AMD64 daily ISOs and
both have the exact same behavior, resulting in a system that cannot be
used.

I use my PC strictly for Ubuntu, so no other OSs are installed.

[Bug 135194] Re: xsane does not recognize HP

2008-04-09 Thread Marc Baas
Did you check your user's permissions?

There was a bug earlier in beta where the user was not automatically
added to the groups "use tape drives", "use scanner" and "send and
recieve faxes".

I had the exact same error message and adding those groups to my profile
fixed it, the detection part that is. The sane and sane-tools actually
allowed my scanner to scan, albeit not always reliably.

Go to: System>Administration>Users & Groups, unlock and enter your
password, select your user and click properties, then on the second tab
select all groups that haven't been selected. Make sure you relog, and
then try to see if your scanner does get detected by the system.

Good luck.

[Bug 213256] Re: Hardy: missing menu icon art for gnome-cd and cddb-slave2-properties

2008-04-07 Thread Marc Baas
Quick update:

Upon further investigation it turns out that both applications are
neither installed, nor available through synaptic. So for some reason
the menu entries are listed in the Gnome menu editor, but the
applications themselves are not present.

I don't know which of the two things is supposed to happen, but I see
two options:

1) Remove the entries from the menu editor (in case they officially have been
replaced by other software), or
2) Make the software available through synaptic and have it installed by
default (like it used to be on Gutsy).

[Bug 211889] Re: Unable to access the scanner without being root

2008-04-05 Thread Marc Baas
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 109727 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109727

Kelson, try this fix that I found:

Go to users & groups: System>Administration>Users and Groups
Click the "Unlock" button and enter password.
Select your default user
Click properties
On the "User Priviledges" tab check the groups you belong to.
If anything is not checked (like scanner for example) check it.
Log out of your session and log back in again
Now try to see if your scanner is being detected.

So by default the default user is not added to all groups like it should. The
groups that the default user should be added to still are:
Send and Recieve Faxes
Use Scanners
Use Tape Drives

In my case that solved my problem.

2008-04-04 Thread Marc Baas
I also tested this on Ubuntu Hardy and the behavior is identical: as
root both HP-Toolbox and xsane work properly, but when launched as
regular user they have communication problems with the devices:

xsane doesn't even detect the scanner
hp-toolbox does not communicate with the printer at all

This confirms my suspicion that this is an ownership/permission problem,
or at least it looks like it is one. After all, why does it work with
root permissions?

The Hardy Ubuntu login screen has been replaced with the last art update
and it is almost as if someone turned up the brightness in the center of

It looks really ugly now and even hurts my eyes to look at it.

Could it be that by mistake a wrong art-file ended up in the art update?

[Bug 211479] [NEW] Hardy: liferea gives errors upon launch

2008-04-03 Thread Marc Baas

ls: cannot access /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9*/libsqlite3.so.0: No such file or

Try `dirname --help' for more information.

The first time you launch it, it just exits and that's it. Some process seems

[Bug 209781] Re: Kubuntu Hardy: HP-Toolbox only works when used as root

2008-04-03 Thread Marc Baas
Can someone please look at this tool? It affects all HP all-in-one users
out there.

** Summary changed:

- Kubuntu Hardy: HP-Toolbox only works when used as root
+ Hardy: HP-Toolbox only works when used as root

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: kdebase-kde4
+ Binary package hint: both in KDE and Gnome: hp-toolbox

When starting HP-Toolbox it gives an error saying that:
"ERROR: Device not found. Please check the connection and power-on device",
while the HP device is shown in the left column.

The device is hooked up, powered on and fully functional.

If one, however, launches hp-toolbox as root:
  sudo hp-toolbox

The tool works properly and can communicate with the HP device without a
  problem.

Clearly there is some sort of permission issue here that keeps the tool

[Bug 209781] Re: Kubuntu Hardy: HP-Toolbox only works when used as root

[Bug 203877] Re: Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system

2008-04-02 Thread Marc Baas
Murat:
Sorry to have taken so much time, been a way a while and have also been
hammering Kubuntu Hardy for some days.

The exact keys (I have to work by heart here) were:
autoplay_dvd_command
autoplay_vcd_command

They both have a checkmark key also, but I don't remember their exact names. It
was something along the lines of:
autoplay_dvd
autoplay_vcd

I don't know of any others in particular that seem to be ignored. These
are the ones I looked at specifically while going through my own
personal setup for an installation test to see if all went well.

Sorry I can't be of more help. And it does sound to me that Sebastian is
right. Probably the editor itself is not bugged, but for some reason
these values are either ignored or taken from another config file.

[Bug 109727] Re: xscan not connecting with scanner and crashing

2008-04-02 Thread Marc Baas
I am having the same problem, also with my all-in-one HP
printer/scanner. HP-Toolbox is suffering from the same problem and I
think they are related.

If I start kooka as root from a terminal I get this error message:

Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-marc" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
Error: "/tmp/ksocket-marc" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.

Changing permissions to rw doesn't change anything though. I think it's
the ownership that is the problem here. (I'm not 100% sure though)

Oddly enough if I start kooka with root permission it does detect my
scanner properly. The same goes for HP-Toolbox. Both work fine when
started with root permissions but my regular user cannot use my scanner.

This leads me to believe that this is a permission issue.

I'm using Kubuntu Hardy Beta x86_64 KDE3.5 completely up to date.

[Bug 209772] Re: Kubuntu Hardy: Dolphin: unable to save bookmarks

2008-03-31 Thread Marc Baas
It seems only to happen when someone as root has used dolphin.

One can solve the bug by using rm
/home/marc/.kde/share/apps/d3lphin/bookmarks.xml at the terminal.

Clearly, it was trying to overwrite the one that belonged to root.
Obviously the system should deal with this in such a fashion that it
shouldn't be a problem to switch from root to regular user. That is, if
this is possible.

If this turns out to be difficult, one could opt for the system
automatically not saving these type of settings for a root user,
considering that Kubuntu doesn't know a root user account where one
normally would store these settings.

[Bug 203877] Re: Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system

2008-03-29 Thread Marc Baas
So does this mean that ignored settings in gconf-editor are considered a
bug or not?

Sorry if I came off harsh, but it seems to me that I was not the one
bringing up other tools or options.

To reply to your statement that there are some applications that don't
show up in the (new) nautilus tab: on my system not one application
shows up. But I'll file a seperate bug report on that one.

Don't get me wrong, but it tends to get a bit frustrating that I first
have to fight to convince your team that something is not working is a
bug.

Lets just get the bug fixed. That is my main point. gconf-editor
settings should work and at this part they don't, at least not
completely.

[Bug 203877] Re: Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system

2008-03-29 Thread Marc Baas
Right, then why isn't VLC listed as a possible application to launch
upon entry of a DVD player?

The only options I have in Nautilus are:
1) Open Movie Player
2) Open Folder
3) Do Nothing
4) Ask what to do. Which gives a list of the 3 previous ones.

So, how do I define VLC (or any other application for that matter) as my
preferred application to open upon inserting a DVD?

Still, I cannot select another player than Totem the way the system is
set up.

I'm starting to wonder why gconf-editor clearly has been redered
useless. Are you telling me that Gnome is supposed to restrain the user
to the default selection made by the devs? Excuse me for saying so, but
that would be worse than the products I abandoned because I didn't like
them.

So at this point I still have no way to set VLC as my default player for
launching when I enter a DVD.

If someone can enlighten me what it is I oversaw, please let me know,
but replying with facts that are incorrect doesn't solve the problem I
inducated.

There is a bug to solve here! In the forums people are already talking
about it, why not fix it? However you guys do it is not of my concern,
but I do want the same functionality, to say the least, that I had in
Gutsy. Now I'm looking at a downgraded system in certain regards.

Please consider the fact that the more you limit the user the smaller your
audience will be. The way things are now one cannot possibly change certain
parts of the configuration at all anymore. This is a bad thing for both Ubuntu
and the Linux community.
One can add functionality, improve it, but not take it out. That is a guarantee
for getting unhappy users. And that is bad news for the community, but also for
you guys.

[Bug 207409] Re: [HARDY] xserver-xorg does not auto-configure correctly

2008-03-28 Thread Marc Baas
I have to agree with komputes here. It is absolutely vital that there
are text-based tools to configure xorg.conf.

We are not looking forward to a "Windows" type philosophy being implemented
into Linux where the system knows best and when it doesn't, all you can do is
curse and pull out your hair.
Linux is about flexibility and having the option to do things in several ways,
where you can pick the one that suits you best. Adding an autoconfig tool is
nice and good, but one cannot take out the other tools. That is effectively
downgrading your system.

Also, if we have to bring up these kind of discussions, I really start
to think that there is a huge misconception on behalf of the developers
with regard to what the user wants. The user wants usability, ease of
use, flexibility and compatibility. Taking out those tools eliminates
all those factors if the autoconfig tools happens to miss-identify your
video card.

So yes, put the tools back as a fall back for those less fortunate ones,
who will at least have a chance to use Ubuntu. Or are you suggesting
that from the Ubuntu team no one really cares that there will be users
who want to use Ubuntu but can't, simply because of wrong policies being
used by the team?

Really, you don't want to build yourself a reputation of just doing what
you think the user wants and is best for him/her, while ignoring their
actual needs and wishes. That will really rapidly build a really bad
reputation for this OS.

[Bug 203877] Re: Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system

2008-03-28 Thread Marc Baas
The key values set and read by gconf-editor are correct.

However, Gnome ignores these settings.

So, either gconf-editor is not handling it properly, or another
application is overriding the settings of the gconf-editor (or gnome for
that matter).

Of course I don't know how Ubuntu handles this internally, but the place where
I noticed the bug was when using gconf-editor. I'm not claiming it should be a
bug there. For all I know it is related to other software, but I was hoping
that this is where your expertise comes in.
Whichever it is, the settings gconf-editor stores are (partly) not
read/followed up by the system. That is the actual bug.
Unfortunately my in dept knowledge of the Gnome desktop is not such that I
would know which software (layers) deal with these settings. If I would have
had any hints, I would have let you know.

So it is not necessarily a bug in the editor itself. It is the place
where I (and others) have noticed it though.

Technically speaking it could be that the editor saves the settings on a
server on the net somewhere and reads them fine, but Gnome never sees
them. It could be that there are more than just one file with these kind
of settings: one not being read by Gnome and one being read by Gnome, of
which the editor edits the wrong one. And I can go on and on for a while
like this.

Anyway, I don't know where the actual bug lies, all I can do at this
point is report what I noticed and which indicates a malfunction. I was
hoping you would be able to find the actual bug with this information.

Again, let me know if I can help with additional information.

[Bug 208340] Re: apport-gtk does not start from menu

2008-03-28 Thread Marc Baas
Kjell,

If you were to check again, then you will see that whatever menu item
you un-select will show small italic.

So I think my point still stands. Just for the sake of the discussion:

1) open System>Preferences>Main Menu
2) navigate to Office
3) unselect all (yes, all) menu items

Result:
All unselected menu items will be small italic.

Note: I'm fine with your explanation that they are not supposed to be
used for menu items, but if they don't show up any different than
regular menu items, then how is a user supposed to know this?

Can't you just not make them appear in alacarte? If it's a
limitation/bug of that particular program, and you cannot change it,
that's acceptable to me. However, presenting a user with a tool that
does not do what it is supposed to (showing menu items instead of items
that are no menu items) is a tool that has a bug in there.

So we have a tool with a bug, I don't think the story ends here. That
is, unless it is out of your power to fix or have it fixed.

Let me know what you think.

[Bug 203877] Re: Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system

Setting the value with root permission automatically seems to set it for
my regular user with the same values. I just verified this on my system.

So after editing the values, both my root and regular user on my system have
the exact same values showing for both keys. I don't know what is overriding
those values, but something in the system seems to really ignore the changed
settings.
Rebooting doesn't work either.

On a clean Ubuntu Hardy Beta installation follow these steps:

1) Install the VLC player with "sudo apt-get install vlc"
2) Start the gconf-editor as root with "gksudo gconf-editor"
3) Go to the following section: desktop>gnome>volume_manager
However, do not expand that menu, select the top of that menu (so actually
click on "volume_manager"
4) In the Key value window (the right window of the tool) scroll down to the
value "autoplay_dvd_ command"
5) Right click the key value to the right of its name and select "edit"
6) Enter the new value /usr/bin/vlc dvd://
7) Select "Ok"
8) Right click the field again and select "Set as Default"
9) Do the same for the key "autoplay_vcd_command"
(I have tested these settings with both autoplay_dvd and autoplay_vcd checked
and unchecked with the exact same results!)

10) Close gconf_editor.
11) Put a movie DVD in your DVD player and watch to see which application is
being used by the system to play the movie.

Result:
You've guessed it: Totem is launched and plays (or rather: doesn't play) the
movie.

Expected result:
Since gconf_editor is the only means we have in the Gnome desktop environment
to change these values I would expect the system to respect the changes I've
made and use my newly defined favorite DVD movie player when I enter a DVD
movie, instead of ignoring it and launching the default one.

Note:
Technically speaking, in Ubuntu it is now impossible (don't know about manually
editing config files, but I don't think that matches the Gnome philosophy to
keep things simple for the user) to changed preferred applications. The only
means that exist that actually allow you to change something is the Preferred
Applications tool under System>Preferences. Low and behold, the old tab that
allowed one to define these type of preferences has been removed.

In the end, the user is stuck with the predefined settings and cannot
change them.

I would consider this a pretty big flaw in the system. Simplicity is one
thing, but not allowing a user to customize his preferences at all, is
another. This cannot enter into the live version because it will tick
quite a few people off that they get their hands tied to their back by
the system this way.

Good luck with the bug!

[Bug 208342] [NEW] bug-buddy does not start from menu

2008-03-28 Thread Marc Baas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-menus

Related to Bug #208340.

After adding bug-buddy (Report a Problem) to the Gnome menu, and
selecting it, no application is launched.

On a clean install of Ubuntu Hardy Beta.

Steps:
1) Go to: System>Preferences>Main Menu
2) In the "Menus" column select "System Tools"
3) Check the checkbox in front of "Report a Problem"
4) Go to the gnome menu and select Applications>System Tools>Report a Problem

Result:
Application is not launched and instead a message window pops up saying "Either
--appname or --package arguments are required."
The window only has an button as an option and that one closes the window
upon selection.

Expected result:
I would have expected to either see some application launch or a web page being
launched in Firefox.

Remarks:
It seems to me that this tool requires arguments. I would like to raise the
question as to how much sense it makes to allow a user to add an icon that
launches an application which will only work if they provide it with an
argument, which one can obviously not enter when selecting a launch icon from a
menu. Therefore, does it make sense to have a menu item like that in the first
place? Wouldn't it make more sense to take the icon out of the menu (not have
it available at all) and educate the community on its existance and providing a
simple guide on how to use the application?

I personally now consider it to be another non-working application in my
menu. (I'm simulating a user who doesn't know exactly what he's dealing
with.) But even as a more advanced user, these type of menu entries make
no sense. If it doesn't do anything useful by clicking on it, then why
is it there?

Good luck with the 'bug'.

[Bug 203612] Re: Screens and Graphics menu item in wrong section

2008-03-19 Thread Marc Baas
So to summon it up:

It was supposed to be removed from the menu altogether and be replaced
by the Screen Resolution Tool.

The tool was put in place as a replacement of displayconfig-gtk under
System>Preferences
However, displayconfig-gtk wasn't removed from the menu it was moved to
Applications>Other

Sensible thing to do: remove displayconfig-gtk alltogether (I would also
just remove it from the default install).

Am I right?

[Bug 203620] Re: Gnome Theme Manager in Hardy is very buggy.

2008-03-19 Thread Marc Baas
These are certainly not random issues. They all occured at the same time after
I tried to install a set of themes/icons/cursors that worked fine under Gutsy.
If you'd like links to all of them, I'll be happy to provide them, but I do
think you should have a look at these issues which all popped up at the same
time.
So to make sure I'm not misunderstood: these are all "symptoms" of probably one
and the same issue.
Hence I'm reactivating my bug report, awaiting another response to look into
this issue.

[Bug 203896] [NEW] Hardy: gnome-device-manager not installed by default

2008-03-19 Thread Marc Baas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-device-manager

The tool gnome-device-manager doesn't seem to be installed by default
under Hardy, even though in Gutsy it was.

I think the tool should be installed in Hardy by default because it
proves to be a very useful debugging tool for hardware functionality,
especially for less experience users who are not comfortable with using
terminal commands to debug hardware functionality.

It was very practical to have this tool in Gutsy to have a quick glance
to see how certain hardware was detected to see if there maybe something
went wrong in case of problems.

[Bug 203871] Re: Hardy: gdmsetup crashes upon launch

2008-03-19 Thread Marc Baas
Ok, this is a tricky request, since the only time this happens is right
after a clean install of the current Hardy 64 bits ISO. And it is a one
time only occurrence.

Since it doesn't always crash the application, like this last time in my
case, I obviously don't have a crash report.

The next time I do a fresh install for testing purposes I'll certainly
keep an eye out on this bug, but I'm sorry I cannot provide you with
more info.

In a previous installation it did crash, but there were quite a few bugs
I reported (it was my first time using Hardy) and that one slipped
through. The odd thing is that in previous installations at times I had
to try to launch gdmsetup up to 3 times before it seemed to have fixed
itself.

As soon as I do get a crash report I will make sure to attach it, but at
this time I don't have one.

If there is another way in which I can verify what could be the culprit
of this bug, please let me know and I'll be happy to help out.

[Bug 203877] [NEW] Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system

2008-03-19 Thread Marc Baas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gconf-editor

When trying to change the default action upon loading a DVD (launching
VLC as opposed by the default Totem player) those changes are clearly
saved and remain in the configuration tool. However, the system
completely ignores the new settings. Whether I make the new values
'default' or 'mandatory' doesn't matter at all, the system seems to
completely ignore the changes in the settings and keep on executing the
original values.

It seems to me that either the system loads the original values from a
different file than where gconf-editor is saving them, or for some
reason original values seem to have changed visually in the gui, but in
reality they haven't as far as it concerns Gnome configuration.

When I use gconf-editor to edit certain settings I expect that to
override any other settings in the Gnome environment.

After some research I've found that certain settings in gconf-editor
don't correspond with the settings of individual applications, which
basically could confirm my suspicion that there are multiple
configuration files with different values in different places. Or at
least something along those lines.

[Bug 203871] [NEW] Hardy: gdmsetup crashes upon launch

2008-03-19 Thread Marc Baas
Public bug reported:

When, after a clean installation of the lastest Hardy alpha, one
launches gdmsetup, it doesn't start (although it does indicate in the
window list bar that it is launching) and gives this error message:

gdmsetup[16146]: CRITICAL: Error opening file: No such file or directory

It does this several times (about 20 in my case) and then in the end
crashes or at times launches. The end result is that it takes literally
minutes to launch or crash.

Starting it up the second time it runs fine though.

I got the Hardy ISO for x64 yesterday, and this bug is still in there.

I can print without a problem, even print a test page through the HP

working without a problem.

[Bug 203620] [NEW] Gnome Theme Manager in Hardy is very buggy.

2008-03-18 Thread Marc Baas
Public bug reported:

In Hardy x64

So far I've noticed the following bugs:

1) There is a menu uption under Applications>Other which is called Theme
Installer, which crashes upon launch.
2) Under System>Preferences>Appearance a lot of things are not working as they
should:
a) Themes (GTK) are installed without a preview icon.
b) Murrine themes are often not installed correctly, come up with errors or one
gets the message that they are installed while they are not.
c) When customizing a theme none of the controls has a preview icon, colors
cannot be edited (like I think was promised), window borders have no preview
icons, icon sets have no preview icons, and some installed cursor themes are
missing.

All these should be working at least like they were under Gutsy, the way
it is now, one cannot properly customize or use themes in general.

[Bug 203617] [NEW] Hardy upgrade doesn't work as expected

2008-03-18 Thread Marc Baas
Public bug reported:

Upgrading Gutsy x64 to Hardy didn't work as explained in HOWTOs.

1) Changing all gutsy entries in sources.list to hardy.
2) sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get distro-upgrade (if I remember correctly)
result: none

Only after rebooting the computer one could select to upgrade to a newer
version. In this case one could only do a partial upgrade. This in my
case resulted in a completely messed up system. The only way to overcome
this was to do a new clean install to get things working again.

Direct result was a kernel that failed to load its variables, and that
was basically the end of it.

[Bug 203619] [NEW] Hardy install leaves one without menu bars

2008-03-18 Thread Marc Baas
Public bug reported:

Upon finishing a clean install of Hardy, running all current updates and
rebooting afterwards, I had no menu bars at all anymore.

Oddly enough, I could fix it by simply rebooting. Killing xserver wasn't
sufficient, I actually had to reboot my system.

The only thing I had done before the reboot after which my menu bars
were gone was try to adjust the time in the clock in the menu bar which
resulted in locking up the whole menu bar. I was forced to reboot.

Related to this bug probably at some point was that my garbage-bin
vanished from my menu bar. Also here a simple reboot fixed the issue.

Clearly these things shouldn't ever happen.
