Invalid package information

After updating your package information, the essential package
'ubuntu-minimal' could not be located. This may be because you have
no official mirrors listed in your software sources, or because of
excessive load on the mirror you are using. See /etc/apt/sources.list
for the current list of configured software sources.
In the case of an overloaded mirror, you may want to try the upgrade
again later.

[Bug 1295030] Re: Please backport latest ntfs-3g to precise and trusty

2015-03-18 Thread Marcos K
A severe side-effect of the old version (currently used in Ubumtu 14.04)
is described at http://askubuntu.com/questions/597815/ntfs-3g-failed-to-
decompress-file

Not just inability to access Windows 8 compressed files (or others
too?), but leads to a disk space DOS, essentially killing the Linux OS
until the mess gets cleaned up.

Referring to when the bug happens. X Windows didn't finish loading
whatever handles windows, apps etc. (switching or launching them is not
available yet. metacity --replace helps a little, if I can get thru an
external tty )

[Bug 1281312] [NEW] irrecoverable blank Xwindows after install other window managers

2014-02-17 Thread Marcos K
Public bug reported:

Auto-login selected at installation time.

After installing other window managers from synergy,

such as gnome, kde, cairo-dock, etc.

logging out, selecting any other than Lubuntu, enters a blank Xwindows
screen with only the mouse pointer.

NO right-click menu. NO functioning CTRL ALT Backspace to end the
session.

The only way to stop X is from another terminal, stop lightdm for
instance.

HOWEVER, start lightdm returns to the same stuck screen with no
options or apps whatsoever. Not even ALT F2 works to launch things.

Editing ~/.dmrc or removing it does not help.

In synaptic I marked python-twisted-core for reinstall, which caused it to
re-download to
 /var/cache/apt/archives/python-twisted-core_11.0.0-2_all.deb

Though that attempt to reinstall the package ended in failure:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct
the problem.
E: _cache-open() failed, please report.

This time, instead of running 'dpkg --configure -a' again, esp. since I noticed
the /var/lib/dpkg/updates already empty, I ran:

 dpkg -i --force-all /var/cache/apt/archives/python-twisted-
core_11.0.0-2_all.deb

which output:

dpkg: ../../src/archives.c:985: tarobject: Assertion `r == stab.st_size' failed.

S that pretty much circles back to square one.

Maybe someone could post their Package: python-twisted-core stanza
from /var/lib/dpkg/status for me? The one in comment#4 above was from
one other presumably healthy Ubuntu server, but there could be version
mismatches etc.

[Bug 997024] Re: python-twisted-core is blocking upgrade

2012-06-19 Thread Marcos K
Found files

/var/lib/dpkg/updates/:
Package: python-twisted-core
Status: install reinstreq half-installed
Priority: optional
Section: python
Version: 11.0.0-2

/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0002:
Package: python-twisted-core
Status: install reinstreq half-installed
Priority: optional
Section: python
Version: 11.0.0-2
Triggers-Awaited: man-db

Cleared out the files in /var/lib/dpkg/updates but after another cycle of

dpkg --configure -a
apt-get update -f
apt-get install -f

they reemerged.

Then, what finally seems to have unblocked the massive wave of updates
from 1000's of packages and hopefully distro upgrade, I have added the
following (previously removed or missing) stanza to
/var/lib/dpkg/status

Hours later still updating, triggers are still processing etc. We'll see how it
ends.
