[Bug 440051]

2021-06-04 Thread Marja Erwin
Depending on browser settings, Adobe's website can strobe, trigger
migraines, and for some people, trigger seizures, with several refreshes
per second. I think it may be a cookie-handling bug. Firefox shouldn't
point any users to the website.

[Bug 1056431] [NEW] KDE resets brightness to max at login

2012-09-25 Thread Marja Erwin
Public bug reported:

When using KDE in Ubuntu 11.04 [not Kubuntu 11.04], KDE resets the
brightness to the maximum every time I log in. It takes several minutes
before it will respond to my efforts to reset the brightness so I can
look at the screen.

It would be very helpful if KDE were to remember previous brightness and
volume settings. Some people need bright screens, some people need dim
screens; this is an accessibility issue.

[Bug 1028041] [NEW] Empathy cannot connect to Yahoo! after changing passwords

2012-07-23 Thread Marja Erwin
Public bug reported:

I was using Empathy 2.34.0 in Gnome 2/Classic in Ubuntu 11.04.

I changed my Yahoo! account password. At first I could connect to Yahoo!
by opening the accounts menu and typing the new password there. For
whatever reason, Empathy was unable to store/remember the password, and
reverted to the old password the next time I started it. I made a bug
report of this issue:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/1027420

The suggested fix was to enter passwords and encryption keys and
delete everything related to Empathy in there. I was unable to delete
anything, but was able to correct the passwords.

Now Empathy can't connect at all. I tried rebooting, but it has not
fixed this.

Steps to reproduce:

Change Yahoo! account password.

Change passwords in passwords in encryption keys to match.

[Bug 1027335] [NEW] Update Manager demands partial upgrade

2012-07-20 Thread Marja Erwin
Public bug reported:

I have not been able to use the update manager for the last few months.
I am currently using Ubuntu 11.04, and am avoiding upgrading to 11.10
because I have arm issues making Unity inaccessible, and I had a botched
installation of Xubuntu 11.10 last year and had to reinstall Ubuntu
11.04.

The update manager reports that because Not all updates can be
installed I need to Run a partial upgrade to install as many updates
as possible. I am concerned that a partial upgrade, upgrading part of
the system to 11.10 would be even more error-prone and unstable than
that botched installation. It might disable Gnome 2/Classic, and it
might reverse the fixes I've used to restore working scrollbars. I would
rather simply update what can be updated without this partial upgrade.

I use 11.04 on a Vaio E-series.

I had no trouble waking the machine from sleep until the latest kernel

breaks, and the computer goes to sleep during these breaks.

Anyway, I think the kernel update may be part of the problem.

[Bug 973619] [NEW] LibreOffice Draw repeatedly freezes

2012-04-04 Thread Marja Erwin
Public bug reported:

I am using LibreOffice 3.34 in Gnome 2/Classic in Ubuntu 11.04.

Whenever I do anything in LibreOffice Draw [select an object, start
typing, move an object, etc.], LibreOffice freezes for a second or two.
Not only does this slow LibreOffice Down, it means some actions, like
moving an object to just the right place, can take several attempts, and
it makes it easy for LibreOfice to misread mouse/trackpad locations if
I'm still moving the mouse/trackpad when it freezes; it also prevents
objects from snapping to the grid if they are moved more than about 1/4
at a time.

I have tried quitting and restarting LibreOffice, but this does not
solve the problem.

[Bug 253546] Re: Use intuitive popup scrollbars

2011-11-13 Thread Marja Erwin
I'd call this a bug. The visible-on-mouseover scrollbars introduced in

nightmare. The old-style scrollbars at least worked.

Suggested fix: open the software center and disable the new-style
scrollbars.

[Bug 813118] Re: ALPS touchpad treated as generic PS/2 mouse

2011-11-08 Thread Marja Erwin
I can't use Unity, so I'm not planning to degrade to standard Ubuntu
11.10 until Unity has the functionality of Gnome 2.

Anyway, the psmouse-alps-dkms patch solves the problem in Ubunti 11.04.
It doesn't work in 10.10.

After a malfunctioning installation of Xubuntu 11.10 [which has no
touchpad support], I did a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 which, due
to trouble with psmouse, I upgraded to 11.04.

[Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work

2011-10-20 Thread Marja Erwin
I recently reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10 after a buggy install of Xubuntu
11.10. (Most likely partly because of installer bugs, not just Xubuntu
bugs.) I immediately tried to install the psmouse-alps-dkms patch I had
on my backups. This was version 0.9 and there was some bug during
installation. I am unable to properly install or remove the patch, and
encounter aptdaemon bugs on each attempt.

[Bug 878478] [NEW] (All Ubuntu Variants) need reliable no-network install options.

2011-10-19 Thread Marja Erwin
Public bug reported:

Installation from the live cd got stuck while the installer demanded a
working network connection, and refused to accept the only network
connection available. Installation from the alternate cd got stuck at
the same point. I was able to skip the network connection, but the
install has been very buggy.

To show that this bug/oversight is near-universal in Ubuntu, this page
assumes that users have reliable network connections:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

And while it's for 11.04, this page assumes the same, and matches the
alternate installer: https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/installation-

[Bug 877846] [NEW] (Xubuntu) Some installed applications do not show up in Applications menu; others show up in the wrong subsection

2011-10-18 Thread Marja Erwin
Public bug reported:

I recently installed Xubuntu 11.10, but have faced some bugs with the
Applications menu.

- Pointing Devices is necessary for many laptop users because Xubuntu
does not distinguish touchpad settings from mouse settings. I installed
the psmouse patch and Pointing Devices to solve the Alps Bug, but
Pointing Devices has not appeared in the Applications menu or the
Settings Manager. I installed Synaptiks as a temporary fix; it appears
in the Accessories submenu instead of the Settings Manager.

- Evolution was necessary because my previous Ubuntu installation used
Evolution and the official instructions to import Evolution settings
into Thunderbird caused Thunderbird to stop working. Evolution appears
in the Office submenu instead of the Internet submenu.

- KCharSelect was necessary because it contains certain characters which
Character Map does not, and vice versa. I installed KCharSelectk, but it
does not appear in the Applications menu.

Despite re-installing the patch psmouse-alps-dkms_0.9_all.deb

[Bug 876896] [NEW] Thunderbird quits on start in Xubuntu 11.10

2011-10-17 Thread Marja Erwin
Public bug reported:

I've removed and reinstalled Thunderbird to try to correct this, but it
remains broken.

Immediately after installing Xubuntu 11.10, I was then able to open
Thunderbird, but was unable to import my settings from my Evolution
backup. I installed Evolution, but still could not import into
Thunderbird from Evolution. I followed the instructions here
http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/switching-
thunderbird?s=importas=s to manually copy from Evolution to
Thunderbird, and Thunderbird stopped working after this.

It would open a menu to ask if Thunderbird should be the default email
application and/or a few other functions. And then it would quite every
time. Another user recommended deleting Thunderbird and reinstalling it,
without re-copying the Evolution mailboxes, but the same behavior has
persisted after the reinstall.

Steps to reproduce: I wouldn't recommend this, but follow the
instructions above for importing Evolution settings into Thunderbird,
and see if Thunderbird survives.

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

2011-10-11 Thread Marja Erwin
I use menus pretty often, and use them for just about everything when
learning new software. So I disagree with the idea that menus aren't
important. I don't have any trouble with global menus, but I used to use
a Mac [which has global menus], and I used to have a malfunctioning Alps
touchpad on my current machine [which meant that, among other problems,
it was hard to get fine motions with the cursor].

There is now a patch for the Alps, but there is bound to be trouble with
another closed-source touchpad, mouse, or other device.

I have one problem with the global menus - that the menus for any one
application cover up the menus for the desktop environment. Apple
moderates this using the Apple menu. Unity puts the shortcuts menu there
instead, and the shortcuts menu is a pain to deal with.

[Bug 16492] Re: Mouse pointer should disappear when keyboard is in use and mouse isn't

2011-10-11 Thread Marja Erwin
I disagree. I often have trouble with the cursor disappearing - not
right now, but other times - when I'm typing in Firefox. I also had
trouble with the cursor jumping about because of the malfunctioning Alps
touchpad. So the cursor would jump and change the insertion point for
new text, etc. and I couldn't even see it!

Please, try to make sure the cursors ARE visible.

[Bug 865546] [NEW] OCRFeeder can't open djvu files, can't OCR from png files

2011-10-03 Thread Marja Erwin
Public bug reported:

Not really sure what to say about this. I have Tesseract 2.0 and 3.0
installed. I used another program to split off some sample png pages to
see if OCRFeeder, or anything, would work on them. But with Tesseract
2.0, OCRFeeder spits out gibberish, and now with Tesseract 3.0, it spits
out blank pages.

[Bug 375860] Re: Alps touchpad re-enables tap-to-click on resync

2011-07-07 Thread Marja Erwin
Unless I'm misreading the original bug report, this same issue is giving
me trouble in Natty.

First of all, Maverick and Natty detect the ALPS Glidepoint as a PS/2
Mouse. By default, tapping is enabled. Unfortunately, the touchpad is
too finicky and this results in random clicks every time I try to type
or to drag using the touchpad, or something brushes against the
touchpad. The driver reports tapping as button1 clicks so the only way
to disable tapping is to disable the entire touchpad. I have a keyboard
shortcut to disable the touchpad at need, but I find that the touchpad
re-enables itself at inopportune moments, and re-enables itself any time
I have to resume after the computer suspends.

Also, I don't have a desk, so it is awkward to use external mice with my
laptop.

[Bug 762033] Re: ALPS touchpad recognized as generic PS/2 mouse

2011-05-30 Thread Marja Erwin
I have a similar bug on a used Sony Vaio E-series. In this case, there
is no stick; the system reads the touchpad as a PS/2 mouse and it is
impossible to adjust sensitivity or disable tapping. It is sensitive
enough that I have enabled a hotkey to disable the entire touchpad and
enable typing, but when I need to move the cursor, it is liable to
randomly click on anything in its path; when I attempt to type without
using the hotkey, it is liable to move the cursor location as I'm
typing.

It occurred in both Maverick and Natty; I reinstalled Maverick in the
course of attempting to resolve the bug.
