[Bug 1726124] Re: DNS domain search paths not updated when VPN started

2019-04-20 Thread Mark Duncan
What does that rls-bb-notfixing tag mean? This is just a bug that won't
be fixed? Split tunnel DNS with openconnect is still completely broken
in 19.04 and it would be very nice to have this working. The last
couple years of Ubuntu releases have required me to ditch systemd-
resolved in order to access my company's internal services while remote.

[Bug 1256349] Re: anthy icon does not differentiate between romaji input or hiragana/katakana

2014-04-13 Thread Mark Duncan
Ah, yes, that works for me too. What doesn't work though is the icon
changing when I switch between hiragana/katakana. In KDE, GNOME, and
earlier versions of Ubuntu (I want to say this worked in 12.04, but I'm
not 100% sure on that), the icon will change from あ to ア or A (and half-
width equivalents) depending on the current mode. I've tried with both
Anthy and Mozc and neither update their icon as expected. It seems as
though newer versions of Unity, or whatever handles the display of the
indicator icon, only updates the input method icon when the actual input
method changes and doesn't pick up when the current input method changes
it's typing mode. It seems like something simple to fix, but
unfortunately I just don't have time to dig in to the code.

[Bug 1307058] [NEW] Installer crashes when attempting to install bootloader

2014-04-12 Thread Mark Duncan
Public bug reported:

My system has 2 hard drives in a RAID 0 and a third drive by itself. I
am attempting to install to the RAID 0. My motherboard supports both
BIOS and UEFI. When booting via BIOS, I get an error that Grub failed
to install to /dev/sda. Manually selecting any other disk on my system
fails. When booting via UEFI, I do not get the Grub error, but instead
a generic error that the installer has crashed (which prompted me to
submit this bug report). I have destroyed the RAID 0 and rebuilt it,
but the problem remains. I actually can successfully install using the
beta2 iso booting via BIOS, but when I update the system after
installation, it tries to update Grub which then fails to install.

[Bug 1254374] Re: unable to install 13.10 on Intel RAID0 volume

2014-04-10 Thread Mark Duncan
This bug is still present in 14.04. Unless I select the LVM option,
Ubiquity will just give the ??? error. Installation continues
until it attempts to install grub and it failes with "Executing 'grub-
install /dev/sda' failed. This is a fatal error". I chose the option
to download updates during installation so that could be a grub bug.

[Bug 569372] Re: 10.4 Live CD - Blank screen with Radeon 5870

2010-05-15 Thread Mark Duncan
Baboune,

It may be easier to download the alternate install CD then choosing to
boot to a recovery console after installing. Once at the console, you
can install the Radeon drivers and then 10.04 will boot properly. This
is what I had to do to get it installed. Unfortunately, vsync is
completely broken even if you force it so the experience isn't the
greatest (movies are almost unbearable with all the tearing).

When booting from the 10.4 RC Live CD, only a black screen is shown
after booting. CTRL-ALT-Fn to switch to a console does nothing. I have
tried passing nomodeset and different vga= values with no success.
Because of a complete inability to see anything on the screen, I have no
log. Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD boots with no problems so this seems to be a

[Bug 300587] [NEW] virt-clone does not work until installing qemu

2008-11-20 Thread Mark Duncan
Public bug reported:

I was getting this error today when trying to clone a VM:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ virt-clone -o WinXP1 -n WinXP-sysprep -f WinXP-sysprep.img
Fri, 21 Nov 2008 13:54:30 ERRORcannot concatenate 'str' and 'NoneType'

main()
File "/usr/bin/virt-clone", line 181, in main
logging.debug("start clone with HV " + options.connect)
TypeError: cannot concatenate 'str' and 'NoneType' objects

After seeing that, I figured I would just go clone it by hand. I needed the
qemu-img command so I did a "sudo apt-get install qemu". I then came here to
file a bug report on that error before I forgot so I decided to run the command
again to see the error one more time, but it worked this time. Perhaps there
is a dependency issue somewhere that needs to be looked in to.

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2008-10-26 Thread Mark Duncan
This issue has also caused me to switch to KDE. I was surprised an
issue such as this existed on an LTS release and I'm even more surprised
that it STILL exists. I was hoping this would be fixed for Intrepid,
but unfortunately it's not. Who do we have to pay to get this done?
There's no excuse for this still being a problem after 7 months so maybe
throwing money at it will get it fixed. We can now mount archives
(which is awesome btw), but we can't do something as simple as look at
SMB shares on a server.

Sorry for the little mini-rant, but I hope you can understand the
frustration of this still being broken. Any word from upstream on this?

Same error when trying to run vnc2swf-edit to convert an swf to mpg. I

regardless (yet another program that doesn't run right).

For an LTS release, the Ubuntu devs sure do have their work cut out for

[Bug 194864] Re: F-Spot crashes with SIGSEGV on open

2008-04-28 Thread Mark Duncan
Up to date Hardy and F-spot still doesn't work properly on AMD64. If I
go to a terminal and keep trying to run "f-spot" over and over again, it
will work about 1 in 20 times (the other 19 times, I get the same error
as the submitter). This is kind of embarrassing that a program that
ships as part of the default install doesn't even run. It makes Ubuntu
look like it was just kind of thrown together and not tested at all (I'm
not saying that's the case, but someone new to Ubuntu might think that).
Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

[Bug 219047] Re: evolution-data-server eats RAM

2008-04-25 Thread Mark Duncan

it may be helpful for something else. I followed your instructions and
now have a new valgrind log. I only let Evolution/EDS run for about 5

this one is good or not or if you need anything else.

[Bug 219047] Re: evolution-data-server eats RAM

2008-04-21 Thread Mark Duncan
OK, I made sure evolution-data-server wasn't running and then ran
Evolution with Valgrind. This is the first time I've used Valgrind so I
hope it caught memory usage from evolution-data-server as well (since it
was spawned by Evolution). I started evolution at 8:26am and evolution-
data-server was using 1.4MB. I went to the address book and was
prompted for my password. I put in my password and evolution-data-
server started climbing right away (no search was necessary). It was
climbing a lot slower than before I'm assuming because of Valgrind. I
went to a meeting while it climbed and came back at 8:56am. evolution-
data-server was at 100.8MB so I stopped it and gzip'd the log. The log
is attached. If you need anything else, just let me know.

[Bug 219047] [NEW] evolution-data-server eats RAM

2008-04-17 Thread Mark Duncan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-data-server

Running Ubuntu Hardy amd64 with Evolution 2.22.1-0ubuntu2 installed. I
am trying to connect the address book to my office's Active Directory
server (LDAP) and I have these settings:

Name: AEC
Server: 192.168.0.4
Port: 389
Use secure connection: TLS encryption (I've also tried no encryption)
Login method: Using email address
Login: (my email address)

When attempting to browse the address book, I am prompted for my
password. After inputting my password, the address book stays empty and
attempting to search for anything returns nothings (not even an error)
so it is unclear whether it is actually connecting or not. The problem
is that after searching, evolution-data-server starts eating RAM at a
rate of about 1-2MB per second. I found this when I stepped away from
my computer for a while and returned only to have it moving extremely
slow (took a whole minute for the screen saver to go away). Checking
the system monitor showed that evolution-data-server was using 441MB of
RAM.

Using both TLS encryption and no encryption causes evolution-data-server
to start using up RAM after a search in my address book. SSL encryption
would tell me that it could not connect, but that was expected since we
don't use SSL on Active Directory here. evolution-data-server's RAM
usage usually stays steady between 2 and 3 MB, but as soon as I press
"enter" to search for a contact, it starts to climb and doesn't stop.
It would be nice if someone could look in to this.

[Bug 192605] Re: virt-manager does not detect bridge br0

2008-04-08 Thread Mark Duncan
So, um, yeah...it's April now, this bug has been open for nearly two
months, and Hardy is going to be officially released soon. Considering
KVM support is one of the touted new features, I would hope this bug is
fixed before it is released. Not holding my breath... I'm on a fresh
up-to-date Hardy install and this bug is still around. From my
understanding, it is because of a newer version of dbus. Looking at the
patch mentioned above, it doesn't look like it would be too complicated
to fix. I'm assuming dbus is also the cause of me not being able to
select an installation media when creating a new VM. That's a pretty
big deal! Am I supposed to convert everything to an ISO? That's not
very user friendly. It's unfortunate that CentOS and Fedora 8 both
suffer from this (well, they work until you run all the updates) and I
had high hopes that Hardy would fix this. I mean, it's kind of a hard
bug to miss... and it doesn't seem that hard to fix. It kind of makes
me feel like the people putting these packages out do no more than click
on the app and say "Yep, it opened. That means it works". I'd fix it
if I new enough about how dbus works.

Sorry if this came across as a rant, but it's just frustrating when my
company is trying to move towards virtualizing as much as they can and
not a single Linux distro can get virt-manager running properly. Yes, I
understand there's a command line, but we NEED a GUI since not everyone
here is a Linux expert.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 83922 ***

It's been almost a year and yet this bug still exists. This package
should NOT be listed under "Add/Remove Programs" if it doesn't work (I
just tried it today; still broken). If there are no plans to fix it (as
seems to be the case) and no one wants to step up to the plate to
properly maintain this package then it just needs to be removed to avoid
any future confusion.

[Bug 196538] [NEW] Preferences -> Default Printer is useless

2008-02-28 Thread Mark Duncan
Public bug reported:

Running Hardy Alpha 5

Selecting a default printer under Preferences -> Default Printer does
not do anything. Going to Administration -> Printing shows that no
default printer has been set. Opening gedit and going to File -> Print
doesn't reflect a default printer being said either (PDF and PX-A620
show in the printer list and neither is selected). If there is supposed
to be a difference between default printer in the two apps ("Default
Printer" and "Printing"), then it needs to be made clear (for example:
if Preferences -> Default Printer only applies to the user, then it
needs to say that. If Administration -> Printing applies system wide,
then it also needs to say that). If the default printer in "Default
Printer" and "Printing" should be the same, then what is the purpose of
"Default Printer"? It would just be redundant.

[Bug 196242] Re: [Hardy] bulletproof xorg fails completely with mbp rev3

2008-02-28 Thread Mark Duncan
Also experiencing a similar problem. I'm on an MBP purchased in
December '06 with at ATI x1600 card on it. Xorg doesn't work at all
(safe graphics mode fails as well). Xorg claims the vesa driver
couldn't find any usable modes (I believe Feisty had this problem). To
get the live CD to boot, I had to do this:

1. Press Fn + Ctrl + Alt(Option) + F1 to get to a usable terminal
2. Type sudo -s to get to root
3. apt-get update
4. apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
5. aticonfig --initial
6. /etc/init.d/gdm restart
**Unfortunately, this leaves me with a white screen after looking like it's
going to boot so I had to do more
7. Get back to the terminal
8. killall compiz.real
9. Go back in to my display (Fn+Ctrl+Alt+F8)
10. Go to System > Preferences > Appearance
11. It will show the visual effects as disabled. Turned them on. Screen goes
white.
12. After a few seconds, screen comes back with visual effects off, but the
window manager is running now.
**I'm sure there is a better way to do this (metacity --replace?) I also had
no trackpad support so I had to plug in a USB mouse.

Hopefully the vesa driver gets worked out before the official release...

It doesn't seem to me that there is any help in the logs, but maybe you see
something I don't. I did upgrade to gutsy, but it's still giving the exact
same behavior.

[Bug 140686] Re: Shared external drives cannot be accessed by other computers

2007-09-18 Thread Mark Duncan
I have also mounted the external to /mnt/tmp and changed smb.conf
accordingly, but that also didn't work. Here is the line from my fstab:

/dev/sdb3 /mnt/tmp hfsplus rw,nosuid,nodev,sync 0 0

It is an hfs partition, but I don't think that would matter. Every user
has r/w access to it. As a test, I tried to share my FAT32 thumbdrive,
but I got nowhere with that too.

[Bug 140686] Re: Shared external drives cannot be accessed by other computers

2007-09-18 Thread Mark Duncan
Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, I am trying to access /media/My
Book/Movies. The external is mounted at /media/My Book. "Movies" is a
folder on the external. The server can browse fine and I've given
permissions of 777 to the whole folder. In smb.conf, I've tried
changing "/media/My Book/Movies" to "/media/My\ Book/Movies" and that
also didn't work. If there is any more information I can give, just let
me know.

[Bug 140686] Shared external drives cannot be accessed by other computers

2007-09-18 Thread Mark Duncan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

I'm assuming this is a problem with samba...

Anyway, I can share folders on my internal hard drive and access those
just fine on the network, but shared external drives don't work. I am
running Kubuntu 7.04 (also tried regular Ubuntu 7.04) and the client
computer is also Kubuntu 7.04. When attempting to access the shared
external drive from the client I get an error along the lines of "Folder
does not exist". When trying to connect with smblient, I get:

smbclient 192.168.2.1\\MOVIES --user mark
Password:
Domain=[LAPTOP] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.24]
Connection to failed

I have also tried adding the drive to fstab without success.

Here is my smb.conf:

#
# Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.
#
#
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options most of which
# are not shown in this example
#
# Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
# is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
# for commentary and a ; for parts of the config file that you
# may wish to enable
#
# NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command
# "testparm" to check that you have not made any basic syntactic
# errors.

### Authentication ###

# "security = user" is always a good idea. This will require a Unix account
