[Bug 1026254] Re: Open with on folders was removed, Ubuntu should consider patching back

2015-03-13 Thread Mark Edgington
One decent existing use-case for this feature is the baobab program
(that is useful to a broad user-base, not just power-users), which
helps people see their disk usage, and get rid of unneeded large files.
It would also apply to any other application that operates on folders.

Without this feature in Nautilus, a user is forced to (1) locate /
remember the name of the baobab program and run it, and (2) select an
open folder item from within the application and navigate to wherever
the desired folder to act on is. This is terribly inefficient in
comparison with just right clicking on a folder that you are already
viewing in Nautilus. The same would apply to any software that is
developed to operate on a folder instead of just a file.

One other argument for this is in terms of consistency -- the way you do
something with a file in Nautilus should be consistent with the way you
do something with a folder -- then there's less to remember about how to
do things.

There are many good suggestions here -- what are the next steps required
in order for action to happen (at least in Ubuntu)? Is someone willing

[Bug 1332100] Re: Colour combination makes qt tooltips unreadable in Unity

2014-09-12 Thread Mark Edgington
This is addressed here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/70599/how-to-
change-tooltip-background-color-in-unity

In short, a workaround (until this is fixed) involves:

1. install unity-tweak-tool: sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool
2. run the tool, and modify the theme to something else (Highcontrast and
Adwaita themes work for me).

Also in the askubuntu link above, it is mentioned that you can manually
tweak aspects of individual themes by making modifications to files
within /usr/share/themes. This might be more work, but allows you to
use your preferred theme.

A better workaround than manually modifying files in /usr/share/themes
is to install and use the gnome-color-chooser tool. See the askubuntu
link in comment #3 for details.

[Bug 1282867] Re: Frequent hang and render glitches in Xorg, caused by SNA

2014-07-24 Thread Mark Edgington
I am experiencing the same problem on a Dell Inspiron 6400 with an Intel

I'm using Ubuntu 14.04, kernel 3.13.0-32-generic, and xserver-xorg-

[Bug 1341239] [NEW] Power button not recognized (no ACPI event produced)

2014-07-12 Thread Mark Edgington
Public bug reported:

On a Dell Inspiron 1210 (Mini 12), the power-button is not recognized
with recent kernel versions. I know it *is* recognized with the linux-
image-3.11.0-23-generic kernel (I did not test out several images to
determine exactly where the regression/bug was introduced). The BIOS of
the Inspiron is version A04 (the latest version available).

To reproduce:

1. boot normally with a bad kernel version (e.g. 3.13.0-32-generic, as
provided in Ubuntu where the kernel is configured with the CONFIG_ACPI_BUTTON=y
option)
2. switch to a console and log-in (or alternatively, open a terminal after
logging in to a desktop env.)
3. run the acpi_listen executable from the terminal
4. press the power button.

With a bad kernel version, nothing will happen (no text will be
printed to the screen). With a good version, you will see some text
indicating that an event occurred.

Consequently, with a bad kernel, if you suspend the machine via the
power-off menu option, there is no way to resume (I also tried to close
and open the lid after suspending, to no avail).

[Bug 822828] Re: texlive-latex-extra-doc is too big in size and includes unneeded big minitoc-fr.pdf file (~27Mb)

2014-06-26 Thread Mark Edgington
I would argue that the texlive-latex-extra-doc package should be only a
*suggested* package when installing texlive-latex-extra. Because the
default policy is to install packages that are marked as *recommended*,
it means that a (currently) 317 MB package will be downloaded any time
one wants to install texlive-latex-extra, unless you explicitly specify
you don't want recommended packages.

But requiring the use of the --no-install-recommends flag with apt-get
is problematic because it also prevents any other recommended software
from being installed. It is better to allow the user to opt-in to the
large download, than require the user to have to opt-out of it.

[Bug 1226634] [NEW] ao segfaults if an AudioDevice object is created too quickly after import

2013-09-17 Thread Mark Edgington

imported, otherwise instantiating an AudioDevice object causes a
segfault. Test code is below:

[Bug 966744] Re: [i965] Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended. Compiz hung in intel_update_renderbuffers() from intel_prepare_render() from brw

2012-09-09 Thread Mark Edgington
Not sure if it helps, but I get the same issue using Ubuntu 12.10 with
kernel 3.5.0-14-generic -- I am using this on netbook with the
gma500_gfx driver (Dell Mini 12). When resuming from suspend, I also
get the black screen with mouse-pointer visible.

What I have found out is that upon resuming, if I wait long enough for
the display to be turned off due to inactivity (i.e. the /usr/share
/acpi-support/screenblank script is run), then when I move the mouse or
press a key to wake the display, everything is working normally again,
and the black-screen is no more.

This is reproducible. In fact, I can just type in my password when the
black screen is there (knowing that there is a password dialog hiding
behind that black screen), blank the screen by running sudo /usr/share
/acpi-support/screenblank and typing my password for sudo, and after
the display is turned off (i.e. backlight turns off), when I move the
mouse or hit a key, everything is visible again (i.e. no black screen).

Does this work for anyone else?

By the way, I am not running compiz at all -- just a gnome-classic
session with xmonad. So at least in my case, this isn't a compiz issue.

Why not just add cryptsetup as a package-dependency of gnome-disk-

[Bug 390816] Re: external monitor output is switched off when closing the laptop-lid when gnome-power-manager is set to blank screen on closing

2010-08-22 Thread Mark Edgington
I don't know to what extent it relates to this issue, but there is a
difference in behavior on my Lucid installation between pressing the
suspend-button, and closing the lid (with the system configured to
suspend on lid-close).

If I have a second monitor connected and active (configured with
something like xrandr --right-of ...) at the same time as the laptop LCD
display, then in the first case (button-press), resuming from suspend
correctly restores the display on both the LCD and external display.
However, in the second case (closing the lid), upon resume, the LCD's
resolution is changed to match the (lower-res) external monitor
resolution, and the screens become identical clones of each other.

[Bug 493852] Re: popularity-contest will stat() every file installed file or ~80k files on my system which grinds things to a halt

2010-04-03 Thread Mark Edgington
The script is simply too resource intensive. If there is a way to make
it run over a longer period of time, and require less I/O resources at
any given point in time, this would be much preferable to the current
situation. I am considering uninstalling it (for now), since providing
statistics isn't worth the performance penalty it brings, in my view.

[Bug 525501] [NEW] garbage when displaying to certain websites

[Bug 486074] Re: pdftotext crashed with signal 24 in _int_free()

2009-12-04 Thread Mark Edgington
The problem is only reproducible when trackerd is spawning pdftotext
(i.e. it doesn't happen when calling pdftotext directly from a
terminal), so it seems to be a problem with trackerd, and not pdftotext.
I have attached a valgrind log from running tracker-indexer with it.

But what may be more important is... when running tracker-indexer, I get
the following debug output:

Initializing tracker-indexer...
. (a bunch of normal messages) ...
CPU time limit exceeded (core dumped)

So, I'm not sure what is imposing this time-limit, but this is probably the
cause of this 'crash'.
(in any case, the affected package should probably be changed to tracker).

[Bug 419143] Re: Printing from evince (and perhaps other GTK apps) to PostScript printers is broken

2009-11-27 Thread Mark Edgington
One workaround for this which seems consistently to work for me is to
first print it to another PDF file via cups-pdf, and then open the
generated PDF file, and print it (all printing done via evince). This
may mean that a good filter is being used by cups-pdf, which might be
able to be adapted to solve the problem here. (?)

[Bug 443050] Re: Intra-document hyperlinks jump to wrong page

2009-11-09 Thread Mark Edgington
I tested it in Karmic with Evince, and when you are in presentation mode
(having pressed F5), the linking jumps to the correct page. But, when
you are not in presentation mode, it still goes to the wrong page (same
as in Jaunty).

The same behavior (good in presentation mode; bad otherwise) occurs with
Okular.

As expected, everything works fine with Adobe Reader.

[Bug 443048] [NEW] Intra-document hyperlinks jump to wrong page

2009-10-05 Thread Mark Edgington
Public bug reported:

I have generated several presentation PDFs via pdflatex + the beamer
class, and have noticed a problem when viewing these documents with
okular and evince that does not occur with Acrobat Reader.

Take for example, the PDF at http://latex-
beamer.sourceforge.net/beamerexample1.pdf . When loaded in Acrobat
Reader, clicking on Our Model of Absolutely No Space Overhead in the
table-of-contents page jumps (correctly) to page 17 in the document.

If you open the same document with evince/okular and click on the Our
Model... link, it *appears* to take you to page 17 (this is the number
which shows up in the page-number entry-box), but the actual page which
is viewed is page 18. If you page-up, and back down, the real page
number of the jumped-to page will be shown in the page-number entry-box
(i.e. 18).

In general (sometimes for the first link in the TOC this is different),
the hyperlinks in the TOC jump to one page further in the document than
they should.

I presume this is a problem with the poppler library (as opposed to
evince and okular), but correct me if I'm wrong.

In any case there is clearly a difference between what Adobe Reader does
and what these poppler-dependent programs do.

[Bug 157187] Re: ability to specify PDF metadata in print dialog

2009-09-01 Thread Mark Edgington
It seems that the CUPS-PDF backend uses ghostscript as the 'real'
backend, and ghostscript (as far as I can tell) currently doesn't offer
any way of setting the metadata. If it did (or will at some point),
then I believe an interface to set this metadata could be added to the
CUPS-PDF backend. But as it stands, this is not possible -- does that
sound correct?

I tried a simple test, editing a file in OpenOffice, changing various
properties in the file menu, and then printing via CUPS-PDF. But, none
of the changed properties were visible in the produced PDF.

Of course each program can provide its own means of generating PDF files
(in OpenOffice, that would be using File-Export as PDF), but it is
unreasonable to assume that all programs which can print must/should
also provide a means of generating their own PDF files. This is where
having customizable PDF metadata on the CUPS-backend level makes sense.

When the link in the file is clicked with evince (assuming the target --

[Bug 315034] Re: sshfs using wrong user/group

2009-04-21 Thread Mark Edgington
I have noticed that if I try to mount an ssh path which is being served
on the local machine (i.e. the command is sshfs anotheru...@localhost:
local_mountpoint), then provided that anotheruser exists on your
machine (should be the case), the ownership of the files is assigned to
'anotheruser', and not to the user who called sshfs.

This does not happen, however, when mounting a remote ssh path for which
there is no corresponding user on the local system (i.e. sshfs
yetanotheru...@remotehost: local_mountpoint). Then, the ownership of
the yetanotheruser's files is mapped to the user who called sshfs.

(perhaps it would also make sense to have a right-click menu item on the

[Bug 226852] [NEW] kdocker fails to show icon in panel

Public bug reported:

Yes, this is true. But doesn't cups-pdf expose (via cups) some kind of

it be that both would need to be changed? I admit that I don't know

[Bug 157187] ability to specify PDF metadata in print dialog

2007-10-25 Thread Mark Edgington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups-pdf

It would be nice if it were possible to specify (or override if it is
somehow automatically specified) various metadata for a PDF to be
created by cups-pdf in the print dialog window. What I mean by metadata
is the sorts of things you see when you right click on a PDF file,
select Properties, and then select the Document tab in the resulting
window -- things like Title, Subject, Author, Keywords,

[Bug 126418] synchronization with CalDAV calendars in Evolution does not work

[Bug 9870] Re: Better spam filtering for evolution

2007-05-25 Thread Mark Edgington
For the record, I am running Ubuntu 7.04 on an AMD64 machine, and use
Evolution to access mail via IMAP. Spam filtering with Bogofilter only
works when a group of messages is selected, and the Message-Check for
Junk menu item is chosen. So, it does not check automatically upon
receiving new mail. I have also tried to set up filters to do things
with new incoming mail, but again, this does not work -- only selecting
messages manually, and choosing Message-Apply Filters will cause the
filters to be executed on the selected messages. I have tried all
combinations of options on the Receiving Options account-preferences
tab (e.g. Apply filters to new messages in INBOX on this server, which
sounds like the right thing), but nothing seems to work.

So, in short, I think that unless this problem (of being able to run
filters/check for spam on new incoming messages) is resolved (am I the
only one experiencing it?), spam filtering will not work (properly or
easily) for Evolution users who have IMAP accounts.

[Bug 113831] eats up all of system's memory with certain eps file

2007-05-10 Thread Mark Edgington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-gv

When using gnome-gv to view the attached eps file, gs ends up locking up
the whole system if left long enough, using up all available system
memory.

I'm using ESP-GS version 815.04.

I know this probably should be reported to gpl-gs or esp-gs upstream,
but I don't have the patience to register on their sites to do it, and
just want to make sure that this bug is logged somewhere... (I don't
know why we can't report bugs for gpl-gs or esp-gs in launchpad...)

It seems that I can't add attachments on the initial report of a bug.
Hopefully I can after it has been reported...

[Bug 94924] Olympus DS-2 voice recorder not recognized as audio-device

2007-03-22 Thread Mark Edgington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

I have an Olympus DS-2 voice recorder, which can record in the WMA
format. It is detected and mounted as a USB drive by HAL. I would like
to be able to play and import files from it in a sound/music manager,
and it seems natural to automatically launch the music-manager when the
device is connected. I have modified 10-usb-music-players.fdi,
including the following entry:

!-- Olympus DS-2 Voice Recorder --
match key=@storage.physical_device:usb.vendor_id int=0x07b4
  match key=@storage.physical_device:usb.product_id int=0x020e
append key=info.capabilities
type=strlistportable_audio_player/append
merge key=info.category
type=stringportable_audio_player/merge
merge key=portable_audio_player.type
type=stringgeneric/merge
merge key=portable_audio_player.access_method
type=stringstorage/merge
merge key=portable_audio_player.storage_device
type=copy_propertyinfo.udi/merge
append key=portable_audio_player.output_formats
type=strlistaudio/x-ms-wma/append
  /match
/match

Perhaps though it would be better to have a separate category of voice-
recorder type devices, which are able to launch something different from
what, for example, an Ipod would launch when connected?

To reproduce:
1) Create an archive containing, for example, a single directory .test (note

2) Right-click on the created archive in nautilus, and select Extract Here

An error is reported, presumably because the script which moves the
files from within the temporary-extract directory uses a shell wildcard
which doesn't match any files/directories if they are all hidden.
