[Bug 947236] Re: Please provide /etc/os-release
Kindly fix as this helps people like me who continuously switch between distros and its annonying. I was one of those who was happy with lsb- release and the /etc/lsb-release already provided by Ubuntu, however, the reasoning given in this FAQ provides a calm, reasoned explanation why they came up with this in the first place: http://0pointer.de/blog/projects/os-release TIA and Much appreciated! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/947236 Title: Please provide /etc/os-release To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/base-files/+bug/947236/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 803943] Re: compiz consuming a lot of cpu
This is a problem for me too. After many attempts at doing other things I was able to reduce (not eliminate) load averages from around 50% to 20% by removing VBlank in the CCSM and disabling Vertical refresh in AMD cccle. After I did unity --reset I noticed I kept getting error messages but they scrolled away quickly - however I could capture the parts where the error was shown and its below: (compiz:2409): GConf-CRITICAL **: gconf_client_add_dir: assertion `gconf_valid_key (dirname, NULL)' failed Initializing unityshell options...done compiz (core) - Warn: unhandled ConfigureNotify on 0xc00090! compiz (core) - Warn: this should never happen. you should probably file a bug about this. compiz (core) - Warn: unhandled ConfigureNotify on 0xc000a1! compiz (core) - Warn: this should never happen. you should probably file a bug about this. Just checked with fully up-to-date precise and bug persists. Steps to reproduce: 1. open gnome-terminal 2. [Bug 964092] [NEW] Super key and Alt+F2 do not show same list, yet look the same visually
Public bug reported: This bug affects Unity in Ubuntu 12.04 Beta. To repeat: - Press Super key and do a search for an application (firefox for example): a list of applications show up. Dismiss with Esc - Now press Alt+F2 and do a search for application (firefox for example): a list of most recently used applications show up. - Visually they both look and fee the same but behave very differently. This is potentially very confusing to power users. In the example above there is no confusion between the two prompts, however if you are searching for AMD Catalyst Control Centre then the results are different and confusing. AMD Catalyst Control Centre only starts when the Super key prompt was used, but for some reason it does not start when Alt+F2 prompt was used (even the commands displayed are different). The same confusion can be observed with the Chromium brower, entering the first few chars of chromium with the Super key prompt works fine but it does not with the Alt+F2 prompt (even though the entire word chromium is entered). ** Affects: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: 12.04 beta unity -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/964092 Title: Super key and Alt+F2 do not show same list, yet look the same visually To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/964092/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Unsolved as of: #uname -a Linux adler 2.6.32-25-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 19:52:42 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux My observation is that if Firefox with Flash running is suspended and then resumed the bug kicks in, however I cannot confirm that exactly. NOTE: I am not running sr_mod modules as suggested by other bug reporters above (in many duplications of this bug report on Ubuntu). I am surprised that this bug is not getting critical attention especially since it cuts across kernel versions and across Linux distributions. -- ksoftirqd/0 hogs one core after resume from suspend https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/467127 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 379780] Re: CD-ROM polling on some Optiarc drives causes high CPU usage
OK I also found that the steps mentioned in my previous post were temporary, meaning the changes I made did not persist after a couple of reboots and resumes from suspend. The good news is now I now have the exact output that occurs after stopping /dev/sr0, it is as follows # hal-disable-polling --device /dev/sr0 Polling for drive /dev/sr0 have been disabled. The fdi file written was /etc/hal/fdi/information/media-check-disable-storage_model_Optiarc_DVD_RW_AD_7560S.fdi Clearly this shows that the Optiarc drive is involved, so it is a genuine problem for those of us that have Optiarc drives. BTW, stopping polling reduced my load in a matter of seconds from close to 100% to close to 0%. Please keep this bug active (and critical) till it is fixed by someone in the know. [Bug 379780] Re: CD-ROM polling on some Optiarc drives causes high CPU usage
Thanks Chase (and Martin). Sorry I had not read his earlier post. The udev rules outlined in Martin's post worked after I rebooted. I'll post again should anything come up later. What I cannot understand though is if HAL is disabled, why then does the hald daemon automatically start. I do not have settings that enabled that daemon to start because I am working with the stock installation of Lucid. [Bug 379780] Re: CD-ROM polling on some Optiarc drives causes high CPU usage
OK I just found a way to drop the CPU load without stopping udev. The trouble is I cannot confirm that this method will work because I was not able to re-duplicate it before posting, so your mileage might vary. Here is what I did: # hal-disable-polling --device /dev/sr0 It printed a bunch of messages that got lost because I did a top to check the load and was surprised to find that the CPU load dropped instantaneously!! The funny thing (to me) is if HAL was dropped from Lucid and if I did a fresh install of Lucid so the /etc scripts should not have had any initialization of HAL, why then should any HAL stuff be running?? I sometimes saw: hal-addon-stor running but never thought of stopping it until now. What is even more strange to me is when I do the following right now: # ps ax|grep hal I see: 1862 ?Ssl0:00 /usr/sbin/hald 1863 ?S 0:00 hald-runner 1899 ?S 0:00 hald-addon-input: Listening on /dev/input/event5 /dev/input/event10 /dev/input/event7 /dev/input/event6 /dev/input/event2 /dev/input/event1 /dev/input/event9 /dev/input/event3 /dev/input/event0 1902 ?S 0:00 /usr/lib/hal/hald-addon-rfkill-killswitch 1903 ?S 0:00 /usr/lib/hal/hald-addon-leds 1913 ?S 0:00 /usr/lib/hal/hald-addon-generic-backlight 1921 ?S 0:00 hald-addon-storage: no polling on /dev/sr0 because it is explicitly disabled 1926 ?S 0:00 /usr/lib/hal/hald-addon-cpufreq 1927 ?S 0:00 hald-addon-acpi: listening on acpid socket /var/run/acpid.socket 3650 pts/1S+ 0:00 grep hal So what's going on? Has HAL truly been disabled or what? Any serious explanation of what happened to solve the problem for me would be much appreciated. The load kind of instantly dropped and do not come back after restarting my laptop, which is a good thing in my book. :) -- CD-ROM polling on some Optiarc drives causes high CPU usage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/379780 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 379780] Re: CD-ROM polling on some Optiarc drives causes high CPU usage
This bug is really bugging me, because despite being upto date with everything released so far, it wont go away for me. :) I have tried everything recommended on this thread, but the load does not come down as much as if I were to shutdown udev completely. I include a snapshot of all running process, with intermittent udev restarts, to show that the problem does not go away on my machine. As you observe in the attached file, the load drops significantly as soon as I stop udev, but restarting it at various late intervals does not change the load much. Interestingly, powertop reports this suggestion for udevd. The program 'udevd' is writing to file 'block:sr0' on /dev/devtmpfs. This prevents the disk from going to powersave mode. ** Attachment added: udev-load.txt http://launchpadlibrarian.net/41268255/udev-load.txt -- CD-ROM polling on some Optiarc drives causes high CPU usage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/379780 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 379780] Re: CD-ROM polling on some Optiarc drives causes high CPU usage
Ok after upgrading to the latest kernel I notice slight drop in load activity with udevd, but it is still too high - never below 0.6. Even after restarting it makes no difference. My details are: # uname -msrv Linux 2.6.32-15-generic #22-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 2 02:23:29 UTC 2010 x86_64 # udevd --version 151 BTW its udisks-daemon that seems to run constantly and grab CPU resources (11% almost constantly). [Bug 379780] Re: CD-ROM polling on some Optiarc drives causes high CPU usage
@Chase Douglas, You are right, if the stop udev command is put into /etc/rc.local my usb keyboard and mouse are not recognized at startup. However if I do not have the stop udev command in /etc/rc.local and only run the stop command after booting up and logging in with the usb keyboard and mouse plugged in I get to keep the mouse and keyboard and still reduce the load. Of course, it wont recognize other usb changes subsequently. I understand this is a hack, but if I do not stop udev then I run out of battery power pretty quickly and my laptop heats up very fast. One point though: this was not an issue with 9.04, because I never experienced this problem there. I did not try 9.10 so I cannot say. So this, to me, indicates that it might not be a hardware problem because the Optiarc DVD drive was working fine in 9.04, unless the drivers have changed with 10.04 and that is causing the excessive load. -- CD-ROM polling on some Optiarc drives causes high CPU usage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/379780 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 525646] Re: udisks-daemon takes up too much CPU resources
Thanks for the feedback. I tried doing what you asked but it did not go away. Besides that command stays in the foreground and does not return control back to me unless I terminate it with Ctrl+C. Even if I put it into the background top still shows udisks-daemon as being the no 1 process always. I put it into the background by keeping a separate shell window open for root purposes and sent it to the background from there. The load has not dropped at all. Also I have a USB mouse and a USB keyboard always plugged in. Other than that nothing else is plugged in. BTW this is a new issue, did not happen in 9.04 the load was stable then.
