Just to let people know. I'm running 15.04, I just installed the v4.0
kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v4.0-rc2-vivid/ and my focaltech touchpad is working
perfectly!

(Of course now my nvidia driver won't compile ;) but go figure)

Thanks to all for getting this into the kernel!

Some more debs :)
https://mega.co.nz/#!DNom1ADb!7yHbxOVRGOdHVn6sxkW2jQLXAEp6qfxxaqDaDpGu9AA

Focaltech driver installed in 3.17.2. I've found this really stable, and
it (looks) like nvidia 340 works perfectly with it.

And I can suspend and resume, no problems.

I've been using it for over a week now, and no major issues, Ubuntu
14.04

[Bug 1372609] Re: Touchpad detected as mouse on Asus ux303ln laptop

2014-11-02 Thread Mark Mandel
I found it (least I think I did)! (That was well hidden)

So there is no 3.17.1 tag in git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-
utopic.git, which is what originally threw me.

*But* if I switch to the 'unstable' branch, I do see:

---
commit 0a3696b154c243d416e7b7f9cfb83277c74c1672
Author: Tim Gardner
Date: Sun Oct 5 21:12:30 2014 +0100

UBUNTU: rebase to v3.17

Signed-off-by: Tim Gardner
---

I don't see a commit for 3.17.1 though (the next commit is 3.18-rc1),
but I can definitely try and backport against this version.

Since it's 3.17 I don't need to backport the original patches, and can
just focus on your changes in /drivers/input/mouse/

I'll get on it, and post some debs when I'm done.

Interesting! When I resume (open lid after closing), all I get is a
black screen. I can't get the display to come back up.

This was my primary drive for trying to get the code to run as a DKMS

3.18*.

2014-10-30 Thread Mark Mandel
@Mathias

I've been trying to turn your code into a DKMS driver for 3.17+ kernels, since
the PNP lookup is how it works
(https://github.com/markmandel/psmouse-focaltech-dkms),
since I ran into issues with the version of the kernel you had in your repo,
wheras the 3.17.1 Ubuntu kernel seems to run great for me.

I can build and install it just fine, but it's still seeing it as "PS/2
FocalTech FocalTech Touchpad in mouse emulation mode" - which I'm
starting to wonder if the embedded focaltech drivers in the 3.17 kernel
are overwriting my DKMS ones.

I'll keep playing with it, see if I can get it to work, it's a fun
little project.

2014-10-26 Thread Mark Mandel
So I took a stab at turning @Mathias's work into DKMS driver for Ubuntu
14.04, but I can't get past one issue.

You can see my work here (FYI, this is my first time mucking around with Linux
drivers / Kernel stuff):
https://github.com/markmandel/psmouse-focaltech-dkms

But when I run `sudo dkms build -m psmouse -v focaltech-dkms`, I get the
following error.
/var/lib/dkms/psmouse/focaltech-dkms/build/src/psmouse-base.c:473:36: error:
‘struct serio’ has no member named ‘firmware_id’
  if (!strncmp(psmouse->ps2dev.serio->firmware_id, "PNP:", 4))

Full version: https://gist.github.com/markmandel/40e92f7bf8b1c2ba4ffe

If anyone can provide me with any direction, that would be great. I'm
wondering if the firmware_id member is not available in this driver
version?

[Bug 1236719] [NEW] [13.10] Can't use gnome shortcut keys with Gnome + XMonad

2013-10-08 Thread Mark Mandel
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 13.10, 64 bit with xmonad installed.

In 13.04, the shortcuts defined in the Gnome 'Keyboard' setting
application worked. Such as volume up, volume down, take a screenshot.

However, in 13.10, hitting those shortcut keys (Media volume up, for
example) does not do anything.

The shortcut keys do work in Unity however.

I'm guessing it's related to the following commits:
https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-settings-daemon/commit/?id=b0cee1df30b4945f524611f354ff164d4a383262
https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-settings-daemon/commit/?id=50e3b5b4ea2b5fede8390baf8a19b33dbf047cc1

I assume since the keyboard shortcuts are no longer controlled by the
gnome-settings-daemon, they don't propagate through.

Not sure what the fix could be for this, but figured I would report it.

Let me know if I can provide any more details.

[Bug 921829] Re: [precise] kupfer does not launch

2012-01-30 Thread Mark Mandel
Apologies - I had Calibre's PPA installed
(https://launchpad.net/~n-muench/+archive/calibre), which has an updated
python-qt4 in it - which I believe is backported from Precise - and
causes this error.

I would love a quick workaround for this bug (as I love kupfer). Happy
to muck around in the python code.

I attempted to replace all occurances of "import gobject" to "from
gi.repository import GObject" as the error stated, but that didn't solve
the issue.

[Bug 893431] Re: Random Display Freeze, Multiple Times a Day

2011-11-23 Thread Mark Mandel
Cannot SSH into the machine when the freeze occurs.
Tried leaving a tail-f on sys.log, kern.log, xorg.0.log and dmesg.log when a
freeze happened, and no logging information was displayed.

Not sure what else I can do to work out what is going on with this bug.

So this just happened again. I tried to SSH in to get a dmesg dump, but
couldn't - said the port wasn't available.
Will leave an SSH session open, and see if it will stay open if I get another
freeze.

[Bug 893431] [NEW] Random Display Freeze, Multiple Times a Day

2011-11-21 Thread Mark Mandel
Public bug reported:

I was running 10.04, but did a clean install of 11.10, and I get
complete freezes on a regular basis. Before this, 10.04 was incredibly
stable.

I can't use the keyboard, and the mouse pointer does not move.

Easy way to reproduce, I have a skype conversation, and then move a
window. That tends to do it quite easily.

I've noticed if I'm listening to music, the music does keep playing, so
it's not a kernel panic.

I upgraded to the latest nvidia driver (285.05.09) in an attempt to fix
the issue, but just had a freeze, so that wasn't it.

I also note that since I upgraded, my fans run a lot, as it looks like
my nvidia card is doing a lot of work with Unity, even when I'm not
actively using it. It never did this under 10.04 (and I use to have a
lot of Compiz effects running).

Next time it freezes, I'll be sure to ssh in and get a tail of the
dmesg.

Let me know what I can do to help.

[Bug 843397] [NEW] Compiz Edge & Corner Binding don't persist after reboot

2011-09-06 Thread Mark Mandel
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu oneiric (development branch)
Release:11.10

Pretty easy to replicate issue.

Open Compiz Settings and (for example), select the Scale plugin, and bind the
top right corner to 'initiate window picker for all windows'.
If you test the top right corner, this will work the first time it is assigned.
Close Compiz Settings and reboot the machine.

You will not see that the binding to the top right corner no longer
works.

Strangely enough, if you go back into Compiz Settings and re-bind it
(turn it off, and turn it back on again), it re-enables all custom
bindings that have been created in Compiz.

Let me know if you need any more details.

[Bug 324894] Re: "Corrupted low memory at" kernel warning on resume

2010-01-11 Thread Mark Mandel
I am also getting this bug on my laptop (Alienware m17x).

This happens to me randomly on boot, and randomly when resumed from
suspend.

This happens pretty much very time I pull my power cable out from the
back of my laptop (which is where I got the attached dmesg.log file
from). Quite often if I pull out the cable from the back of my laptop, I
will actually get a kernel panic, but not every time.

Let me know if I can provide any more details.

[Bug 270617] Re: Display corruption after short period

2009-01-31 Thread Mark Mandel
Not sure if it helps at all, but there is a 3 page discussion of this bug at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1006396

With screen grabs, and I believe some logs as well.

I've had this occur for me a well, on every 177.x version of the nVidia
driver that I have run. Currently running 177.82.

The really weird thing is - it NEVER happens if I have a 2nd monitor
attached, and I'm in twinview. It only every happens to me when I'm
displaying on a single screen on my laptop.

[Bug 287811] Re: Emptying Trash Fails with 'Error while expunging folder'

2008-11-02 Thread Mark Mandel
Just tried workaround, except did:

1. put evolution in offline mode (File/Work Offline)
2. close evolution
3. open a terminal and run:
  evolution --force-shutdown
  find ~/.evolution/mail/local -name "*ibex*" -exec rm -f {} \;
4. start evolution
5. wait several seconds (until the status bar at the bottom is empty)
6. close evolution (it may take a long time to close)
7. Start evolution
8. Enable online mode (File/Work Online)

As there aren't ev-summary folders that I can see.

Seemed to clear out much of my trash folder (not sure how), but now I
still have similar errors when trying to empty the trash:

[Bug 287811] Re: Emptying Trash Fails with 'Error while expunging folder'

2008-10-23 Thread Mark Mandel
@Sebastian,

This bug isn't about a crash - its about not being able to empty the
trash on evolution. The subsequent (often) crash is secondary to the
Trash bug.

I will see if I can get a crash report, but that will be logged as a
crash, which this error is not. I think its worth leaving this bug
open, as it is really not crash related.

[Bug 258485] Re: iwl4965: kernel BUG at iwl4965-base.c:4222

2008-09-14 Thread Mark Mandel
This seems to be what is happening to me about every 30-60 minutes on
Hardy.

I'm running the backport modules, and it has not helped at all.

The only issue I am having here, is that I can get the error to happen
on the alt+ctrl+f1 screen, however, it is larger than the screen, so I
cannot see all the details.

I am attaching the logs as requested. I have already had several kernel
panics today, over the last 6 hours (15th of September).

If this continues, I will upgrade to Ibex, as I do not seem to have
another option at this stage.

[Bug 200509] Re: iwl4965: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000

2008-09-13 Thread Mark Mandel
Just to add an extra note here - sometimes this drops off my internet
connection, but quite regularly this also results in a kernel panic on
Hardy. This can occur more than once per day.

The strange thing is, it will generally only panic when I'm at home - I
can only assume that it's because I'm in an apartment building, with
multiple other wireless networks around, and other interference.

I'm not running backports yet, but will probably plan on moving to Ibex
when Alpha6 comes out, to try the new kernel, and see if that solves the
issue.

Also happy to do any further debugging if required.

[Bug 205653] Re: Hardy beta - laptop randomly freezes with caps & scroll lock leds blinking

2008-04-09 Thread Mark Mandel
Chris Coulson - Thanks for the feedback.

The nice thing is, I can 100% without a doubt say it's the wireless card. The
reason being, that at my previous job, I would be plugged into network through
a cable, and my wireless would be turned off.
In this state, I never had a hard crash for over 6 months.

Working from home (as I tend to do now), I use wireless all day, and the
only time I have a hard crash is when it is on.

So I'm happy to play around with things, to see if it's an issue with
the combination, but it is definitely got to do with the wireless card
being on.

If someone could point our how I could help provide extra logs for this
bug, or anything along those lines, I'd be more than happy to provide
the extra information.

[Bug 205653] Re: Hardy beta - laptop randomly freezes with caps & scroll lock leds blinking

2008-03-29 Thread Mark Mandel
@quadomatic

You see that's funny, because I don't generally get it during high
network traffic, I get it more when things are idle, and then I go to do
something over the network.

I'm tempted to think it's NetworkManager, as this is happening across
cards.

If I start getting the crashes regularly again, I may try converting
from NetworkManager to something like wicd, and see if that makes a
difference.

[Bug 205653] Re: Hardy beta - laptop randomly freezes with caps & scroll lock leds blinking

2008-03-25 Thread Mark Mandel
Just had another crash, I'm attaching pretty much everything I can think
of:

Steps:
1) Crash happened, blinking caps and scrollock
2) Shut down Ubuntu via holding down the power off button
3) Rebooted
4) Copied dmesg, dmesg.0, kern.log, kern.log.0, syslog, and syslog.0 to a
separate folder for review

Hopefully this can give you guys something to work from.

[Bug 205653] Re: Hardy beta - laptop randomly freezes with caps & scroll lock leds blinking

2008-03-25 Thread Mark Mandel
I also have exactly the same issue!

I outlined the issue I had here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4584283#post4584283
And also found people with similar issues here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=702557

I have a Dell XPS M1710

To copy and paste details from my post:
1) Only ever happens when my wireless is on. I have an Intel 4965AGN card.
2) It is more likely to happen if the computer sits idle, especially if there
is no internet connectivity. If I leave something running like IM, it tends to
happen less.
3) Sometimes it happens during non-idle periods, i.e. like just now when all I
was doing was writing this post in firefox.
4) Once a freeze occurs, only a hard reboot will save it
5) I have found that if I reboot, and then allow ubuntu to reload, and then
reboot again, it is less likely to occur.
6) It is very random, sometimes it can not happen for 2 days, then it will
happen 5 time during the day.
7) This will sound very strange, but it seems more likely to occur in the
evening I don't know why that is.

Next time I have a crash, I will include the syslog, and syslog.0 files
if they will help.
