[Bug 1338706] Re: Samsung SSD 840 failed to get NCQ Send/Recv Log Emask 0x1 failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x40) on upstream kernels >= 3.12

2015-07-03 Thread Markus Strobl
You need to check you firmware version:

> sudo hdparm -i /dev/sda | grep FwRev
Model=Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB, FwRev=EXT0DB6Q, SerialNo=x

If you have the latest rev EXT0DB6Q, then you need the fixed kernel
mentioned above.

[Bug 1449005] Re: trim does not work with Samsung 840 EVO after firmware update (EXT0DB6Q)

2015-06-19 Thread Markus Strobl
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1338706 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1338706

Uwe: No, Windows will not update the SSD firmware by itself. Samsung has
a windows application for updates, but it has to be downloaded from
Samsung and executed.

You really should update the firmware though. I also bought my 840 about
a year ago and before updating the firmware noticed severe performance
degradation and a few corrupted files. Performance according to "hdparm
-t /dev/sda" was down to 60 MB/s. After the firmware upgrade performance
was restored to 516 MB/s.

running the latest firmware on my EVO 840 SSD for a few days now and

[Bug 569999] Re: Dist upgrade re-installs uninstalled cups in "desktop" upgrade mode

2010-04-26 Thread Markus Strobl
Are there any other differences between server and desktop mode? If the
only difference is the reinstall of deselected meta packages then I
think that is an OK solution and we can close this bug report.

Maybe it would be good to add some info to the help section for do-
release-upgrade? Currently it just says there is a desktop and server
mode, but gives no info whatsoever what that means.

[Bug 569999] [NEW] Dist upgrade re-installs uninstalled cups

2010-04-25 Thread Markus Strobl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I have some computers that will never print anything. For instance, one
is a HTPC. I have uninstalled cups as I have no need for it. Another one
is a netbook with limited disk space.

However, whenever I do a dist upgrade the dist-upgrade tool insists on
re-installing cups complete with dependencies etc. On the HTPC it's an
annoyance, on the netbook it will abort and complain about lack of disk
space so I'll have to find stuff to remove to free up enough spece for
cups to be installed just so I can remove it again.

Upgrade is from Karmic to Lucid. Method of upgrade is "do-release-
upgrade -d"

It would be good if update-manager detected that cups was not installed
and skipped it for the upgrade.

[Bug 459741] Re: [Karmic] akonadiserver: Database process exited unexpectedly during initial connection

2009-10-24 Thread Markus Strobl
Same problem here after upgrading to Karmic. Problem is caused by Jaunty
installing sql 5.0 but not selecting the MySql meta package. Therefore
MySql is not updated to 5.1 during the upgrade to Karmic and Akonadi
fails to start.

Simple selecting the mysql-server package will fix the problem. MySql is
then updated to 5.1 and akonadi works.

I think the proper fix for this bug would be for the Karmic upgrade
manager to ensure the mysql-server meta package has been selected.

BTW, this was the ONLY issue I had with the Karmic upgrade on my eee-pc.
Karmic is great!!! Thanks to all the developers!!!

[Bug 378115] [NEW] Kubuntu Adept crashes if bad repository in sources.list

2009-05-18 Thread Markus Strobl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: adept

Version: Jaunty

When a bad 3rd party repository is added to adept, it is not able to
recover. For instance, it is common for less experienced users to add a
repository without the preceding "deb".

The user is not able to recover from this without manually editing
sources.list. Trying to start adept will just make it crash.

Proper behavior is to inform the user that there is a bad repository
(via a popup warning when adept starts) and ignore that line in
sources.list. The user can then correct it via adept's "edit sources".
The bad entry should show highlighted or with a warning icon in the
"edit sources" window.

[Bug 350301] Re: Wireless network management module forces using kdewallet for storing wpa key

2009-04-29 Thread Markus Strobl
Confirmed here also. It's very annoying as my box is a HTPC and I don't
want to have to enter a password every time I start it. I have auto-
login set so that all I have to do is turn the HTPC on and it will start
up to MythTV without touching anything. Now I have to close MythTV so I
can enter a KDEWallet password? No good...

[Bug 144368] Re: qemu fails to boot a disk image in gutsy

2007-10-24 Thread Markus Strobl
Same problem here. I have a WinXP installation in QEMU that ran
perfectly under feisty. After upgrading to Gutsy, it hangs during boot.

I inserted the WinXP install CD and booted from it. It starts loading
installation files off the CD and then BSOD (page fault).

I reverted QEMU back to 0.8, but it is still very flaky. The WinXP
desktop came up once, but then crashed. After that it crashes (auto-
reboots) during boot.

[Bug 144368] Re: qemu fails to boot a disk image in gutsy

Forgot to add: I'm running QEMU 0.9 + kernel 2.6.22 on my other PC

session. So it seems it is something with Gutsy itself, not kernel or
QEMU 0.9 related.

[Bug 134252] Re: alsa mixer channels missing after upgrade to linux-image-2.6.22-10-generic with Intel / Nvidia HDA chip

2007-09-01 Thread Markus Strobl
My comment from 8/28:

Just checking if anyone else saw what I saw: 2 days ago I got a new
kernel modules package. When I booted after installing this package it
seemed the audio channels were back to normal but I couldn't start X as
it said my nvidia kernel module failed to load. So it fixed audio but
broke video?

Turned out that I had to do a "sudo depmod -a" after booting the new
kernel. Once that was done the nvidia_new kernel module loaded and X
could be started.

So fix is confirmed. Audio (and video) works again with the new release
of the kernel-modules.

Confirming on my HTPC using ALC883 chipset (snd_hda_intel driver). I
lost many mixer channels. Most importantly the IEC958 (digital output

[Bug 134422] Intel HDA sound (ALC883) broken after kernel upgrade to 2.6.22-10

2007-08-23 Thread Markus Strobl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-10-generic

Following the kernel upgrade from 2.6.22-9 to 2.6.22-10, I lost the
ability to output sound to the S/PDIF digital output.

alsamixer no longer shows the option to enable IEC958 (Digital output).

alsamixer again.
