[Bug 1100622] Re: package kdelibs5-plugins (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/ktelnetservice', which is also in package kdelibs4c2a 4:3.5.10.dfsg.1-3ubuntu2.10.04

2013-03-20 Thread Martin Schläffer
Hi Philip, thanks for the info. Another problem is the dependency on
libavahi-qt3-1, which is not available in newer Ubuntu releases. Users
of kdelibs4c2a probably still have an old (lucid) version installed. I
wonder whether it's easier to rebuild libavahi-qt3-1 for precise, use
libavahi-qt4-1 instead, or use any other solution?

2013-03-18 Thread Martin Schläffer
Hi all,

I think the best way (for users) is to set up a PPA which provides a
working kdelibs4c2a package and all those useful KDE3 apps.

The main problems are:

1. Users should be aware that there will not be any security updates for
KDE3 apps, since they are in fact deprecated.

2. Repackaging and removing files from binary debs is much easier than
building and uploading new source packages.

Anyway, I started this at https://launchpad.net/~kde3apps and everybody
is welcome to contribute.

2013-02-10 Thread Martin Schläffer
I have the same problem with kcpuload and knetload. I really like those
old KDE 3 apps which are (unfortunately) still much better than the
newer plasma widgets.

I'm running quantal and currently have kdelibs5-plugins version
4:4.10.0-0ubuntu2~ubuntu12.10~ppa1 and the lucid versions of kcpuload,
knetload and kdelibs4c2a installed. Since kdelibs5-plugins breaks
kdelibs4c2a I have a conflict:

$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -V

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 kdelibs5-plugins : Breaks: kdelibs4c2a but 4:3.5.10.dfsg.1-3ubuntu2.10.04.1 is
installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.

$ sudo apt-get -f install

Correcting dependencies... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  kcpuload kdelibs4c2a knetload
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 3 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 35.8 MB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? n
Abort.

I still would like to keep kdelibs5-plugins and kdelibs4c2a installed in
parallel. Can kdelibs5-plugins be fixed that way? Otherwise, would it be
better to set up a PPA with all those KDE3 apps and add new kdelibs4c2a
version which does not conflict kdelibs5-plugins?

[Bug 1068591] [NEW] release upgrade should deactivate /etc/apt/preferences*

2012-10-19 Thread Martin Schläffer
Public bug reported:

The Ubuntu release upgrader should deactivate any apt-pinning definded
in /etc/apt/preferences or /etc/apt/preferences.d/* and notify the user
when doing so. A similar behaviour is already the case when external
(PPA) sources are deactivated.

Otherwise, some random irritating error will be shown which does not
show the origin of the problem. In my case: "kubuntu-netbook cannot be
installed".

I use apt-pinning a lot and I know what I am doing. But when upgrading,
I usually forget that I have pinned packages or sources and it takes me
some time to find out what's wrong. It would just be nice to warn the
user and/or deactivate the pinning in /etc/apt/preferences/*

[Bug 482255] Re: tuxonice userui is not working

2010-01-11 Thread Martin Schläffer
Thanks Whoopie! With the version of your PPA works. No black screen
hangs on resume and tuxoniceui-usplash works as well. There are just
some minor issues:

* pressing "Escape" during hibernation still does not work (is this an
userui issue?)

* on resume, I guess before tuxoniceui_usplash takes over, the splash
image is a bit scrambled and instead of the right-left-right moving
progress bar, the progress bar goes backward, just as during hibernation

* in some cases, it is not switched back to X, so I still see the
tuxonice debug_info output, but I can switch to X using Ctrl-Alt-F7

* in some cases, /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/99video hangs at the command
"chvt 7", so for example, the network manager does not reconnect. after
switching to console and back (Ctrl-Atl-F1, Ctrl-Alt-F7) /usr/lib/pm-
utils/sleep.d/99video finishes

[Bug 482255] Re: tuxonice userui is not working

2010-01-08 Thread Martin Schläffer
I'm using Ubuntu Karmic and pressing Escape while hibernating does not
work here either. I need to use the kernel option "nomodeset" in grub to
deactivate KMS for tuxoniceui-text to work. Using tuxoniceui-usplash
only shows a black screen but hibernating works. I also have to remove
"splash" from the kernel options for resuming to work from X. Otherwise,
I get a black screen after resume, no mouse, no keyboard response, no
switching to console and I have to reset.

I have an onboard intel graphics card in my laptop. The same problems
occurs with different tuxonice enabled Ubuntu kernels
(2.6.31-18.54+tuxonice1, and various others with text or usplash as
default), with both, tuxonice version 3.0.1 and 3.0.99.44 and with
tuxonice-userui versions 1.0-1 and 1.0+svn1081-0ubuntu1~karmic1.

I also tried to copy the missing files into pm/sleep.d (using http://pm-
utils.freedesktop.org/releases/pm-utils-1.2.6.1.tar.gz) and removed all
"add_parameter --quirk-no-chvt" lines in 98-smart-kernel-video. Resume
using tuxoniceui-usplash with the kernel option splash still does not
work.

Note that I also applied the instructions posted by Whoopie in April
2009 on the tuxonice-devel mailing list to generate the initrd.

How can I get more debug information or any idea what cases this problem
and what else I could try?

[Bug 359474] Re: wwan 3g module Ericsson F3507g on Toshiba laptops not working because rfkill cannot be changed

2009-07-29 Thread Martin Schläffer
Hi Bryan,

I just found out that the newest toshset has a 3g switch which indeed
works in my case: "toshset -3g on". So this is another reason why the
patch is not needed anymore. A package for jaunty is available in my
PPA: https://launchpad.net/~sn0ball/+archive/ppa

Thanks,
Martin

unfortunately the toshiba_acpi module seems to be orphaned (see

[Bug 359474] [NEW] wwan 3g module Ericsson F3507g on Toshiba laptops not working because rfkill cannot be changed

2009-04-11 Thread Martin Schläffer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic

The WWAN (3g) module Ericsson F3507g on Toshiba laptops does not work
due to a bug (or missing feature) in the kernel module toshiba_acpi on
Ubuntu 9.04, Jaunty Beta.

The rfkill switch for the wwan module is turned on by default but cannot
be changed. Therefore, the device is not working in Linux. The problem
has also been reported in german in http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic
/umts-funzt-nicht/

In this forum, a patch for the toshiba_acpi module has been proposed
which allows to turn the rfkill switch on and off (similar to the
bluetooth module). Using this patch, the Ericsson F3507g wwan module is
work on my Toshiba R600 laptop.

the required patch can be found here:
