I can confirm this as well. However, I got this behaviour by going in
the reverse direction. ie., I started out with a Gnome ubuntu-desktop
install, and later install kubuntu-desktop. This caused the programs
listed in the report to show up in my Sessions applet.

2008-10-08 Thread Martin Wilson
I can also confirm. Firefox exhibits this behaviour even with a brand
new (firefox) profile and with the --safe-mode option.

My info:
-Intrepid (x86)
-Firefox 3.0.3
-Steps to reproduce:
-Open up Firefox, go to Facebook. Login to a facebook account. Xorg CPU
usage will shoot up.
-I can reproduce this even with a fresh .mozilla folder.

NOTE: This behaviour is only reproduced when the user is logged in to a
Facebook account.

[Bug 235934] [NEW] kwin-style-dekorator does not work by default

2008-05-29 Thread Martin Wilson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kwin-style-dekorator

The kwin-style-dekorator package does not make the necessary
~/.kde/share/apps/deKorator/themes/ directory. It is normally expected
that the "Install New Theme" function to install a theme. Instead, it
seems to install but then will not appear in the Theme list. This
occurs in Ubuntu Hardy with kwin-style-dekorator version 0.3-1

Reproducing:
Install kwin-style-dekorator. Download a DeKorator theme. Open up kcontrol,
go to "Appearance & Themes > Window Decorations". Select DeKorator. Go to
DeKorator's "Themes" tab. Click "Install New Theme", select the theme tar you
just downloaded. Press OK. DeKorator appears to work for a second, but the
theme does not appear in the list. Selecting "Apply" causes no window
decorations (borderless windows).

Workaround:
For now, manually creating the ~/.kde/share/apps/deKorator/themes directory
fixes this problem and allows the "Install New Theme" function to work.

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-03-16 Thread Martin Wilson
I also had a notebook hard drive just die. It was a Samsung in a
Dell XPS M1330. I am not saying that because the hard drive died, and I
have taken interest in this bug, that this bug is the reason. However I
did have smartctl report high load cycle counts (although I know this is
not alway accurate). I can also confirm that the hard drive was ONLY
used under Ubuntu for the 4.5 month period it was alive (except for the
1 week with the preinstalled Vista). And it was never dropped etc. And
it also made a loud click 2-3 times a minute that it would not make when
using the preinstalled Vista before it was removed. So, while this is
all just circumstantial evidence, take it or leave it as raw data.

By the way, I would just like to mention one thing. I have been
subscribed to this bug for months (in fact I was subscribed to other
bugs that this duplicated to hush some of the troubleshooting going on
in bug reports). One of the arguments we see is the balance between
protecting the hard drive and reducing life from power cycling. Take in
to account the two highest probability hard drive killers from this
argument:

1. The user drops the computer but the head was not parked and the platters are
damaged.
2. The user gradually starts experiencing filesystem issues from a hard drive
reaching the end of it's life.

Now, considering both options, which one is primarily caused by the OS?
The second much more than the first. While the OS _MAY_ have helped with the
first situation, it is not definite and many users are not aware that the OS
will even attempt to park the head when not in use. In fact, most users don't
even know what a hard drive head is, let alone a hard drive.
I am aware that the second situation, which in my hypothetical is mostly
caused by the OS, allows for the user to make backups before serious failure as
opposed to the first situation. But in this hypothetical, let's say a person
suddenly has a few files get corrupted, or perhaps even experiences some errors
in day to day operation. Is this user going to get their external hard drive
and run dd_rescue? Most likely not, I know my parents don't even know what dd
is.
My personal opinion, which I know does not amount to much in the scheme of
things :), is that as a user-friendly distribution we should help pioneer ways
to protect the less-technically-inclined user first and still leave all the
options there for people who want to dig. And I think that for this bug, the
primary way to do this is to stop parking the head so much by default.

[Bug 103223] Re: X incorrectly defaults to using disabled Intel onboard graphics card instead of nVidia FX5500 PCI card

2007-12-10 Thread Martin Wilson
While this is well reported I just wanted to note I experience the exact
same behaviour in Gutsy using the Xubuntu live disk. Re-enabling the
onboard and switching over seems to be the only solution. The
installation halts and will not even allow switching over to another
terminal so it is impossible to edit the xorg.conf.

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2007-10-25 Thread Martin Wilson
Andrew definitely has a good point. And a lot of other people have
backed him. It's definitely true that we want the head to park as soon
as possible after there is no activity. But for some reason Ubuntu is
unparking the head, doing something for a split second, and reparking
the head at a constant interval. I think it's this behaviour that
really needs to be addressed, not power management.

I just want to chime in with all the others that are frustrated this is

attention from people affected, it's clear this is a critical priority
issue.

2007-10-14 Thread Martin Wilson
I can confirm this bug also. Worst of all, I'm using the Gutsy RC. I
think one of the reasons this isn't reported very often is that its hard
to tell its going on unless you're in a quiet room. For me, adding
"sudo hdparm -B254 /dev/sda" to my rc.local made this excessive parking
stop. Seriously, Ubuntu killing hard drives is not cool and will get
bad press.

[Bug 122136] Re: Preferences window can't fit on screen and can't be moved

2007-06-27 Thread Martin Wilson
Steps to reproduce:
1. Set a low resolution, most likely with a height under 800 pixels.
2. Go to Edit -> Edit Preferences (Ctrl + P) in gtkpod.

Expected Results:
Be able to edit preferences and save chages.

Actual results:
Changes can be made but not saved because "Apply" "Cancel" and "OK" buttons are
hidden outside of the viewable area.

** Description changed:

This happens using default Ubuntu 7.04 desktop environment (gnome). I
used gtkpod at Debian Lenny. The preferences window is very big, but
holding ALT and dragging it would solve the problem. However, on Ubuntu,
the window can only be moved horizontally. There is no way to reach the
buttons on the bottom of the window. I believe this is a bug in
  Metacity, not in gtkpod.

This leads the program useless. My lucky, is that I could copy my old
  ~/.gtkpod/ from my old system.

  Thank you.

[Bug 48077] Re: Running nvidia-glx-config enable breaks X.

2007-03-22 Thread Martin Wilson
On an HP DV6000t with a Geforce Go 7400 this kills the X config as well.
I fixed the dead X config by reverting back to the old generic config
that nvidia-glx-config saves. Then, instead of running "nvidia-glx-
config enable" I ran "nvidia-xconfig" which worked like a charm,
preserved my X config, and enabled full hardware acceleration.

I propose that Synaptic and Add/Remove suggestion running "nvidia-
xconfig" instead of "nvidia-glx-config enable".
