[Bug 549268] Re: Light-themes should suggest matching background
> Do we want to always keep prompting the user to use the wallpaper. If the > prompt is to occur only once this might be a better.[ But even then why?] > How does it improve user experience? It improves the user experience because the wallpaper is part of the theme. The widgets that make up the theme, combined with the wallpaper, make the whole of the visual experience that the user sees when they first use Ubuntu. In my experience, one of the first things users do on a new operating system is explore the appearance settings, second only to changing the desktop background. I had read that Lucid will ship with as many wallpapers as can be fit on the CD [1]. If that's true then it may help to provide a way for the user to easily restore the original wallpaper if they choose to restore the original theme. Should the user choose to restore the original wallpaper, it will be more difficult for them to find it if there are more images to search through. I agree that it might be questionable if this is a papercut, but it fit the criteria, and at least we could easily track it for inclusion in Maverick if we decide to implement it. > Further the prompt reduces the theme viewing area. Agreed, but there is much that we can do there. The height of the Apply Background notice could be reduced a bit. Also, the "Get more themes online" link wastes much vertical space. That link could be replaced with a button and placed next to the four buttons above it. I can work with upstream to improve this if you think it would be of value. 1. http://davidsiegel.org/lucid-wallpaper-contest/ -- Light-themes should suggest matching background https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/549268 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 566074] [NEW] X should look for new monitors when resuming from sleep or hibernation
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg When resuming from suspend or hibernation, X does not check if the monitor configuration has changed. This can leave the system unable to be used because a new monitor is not activated. Steps to reproduce: 1. Operate laptop on a docking station with external monitor. The laptop lid should be closed. 2. Suspend Ubuntu. 3. Undock laptop. 4. Open lid and resume Ubuntu. Result: The laptop monitor remains off even though the system resumes leaving the system unusable. The only recourse is to hard power off which crashes the session and loses all open data. Expected result: Upon resume, Ubuntu should notice that the monitor configuration has changed and should retarget the display to the laptop screen. [Bug 565094] [NEW] X should consider laptop monitor disconnected if lid is closed
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg When I am using my laptop on its docking station, with laptop lid closed and using an external monitor, the display properties still sees the laptop monitor and allows me to turn it on/off and extend my desktop. Expected result: When the laptop lid is closed, the laptop screen should be considered disconnected. Discussion: Let me explain how this creates a problem. At home I use a docking station for my laptop. The lid is closed and the laptop is connected to the docking station. I use an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. When I want to take the laptop away from home, I can undock it and open the lid and Ubuntu will switch to the internal screen. So far so good. When I close the lid and connect the laptop back to the docking station, Ubuntu thinks that the display is still on the laptop screen and will do one of two things: (1) Do nothing with the external monitor, leaving it off. If I then open the lid of the laptop while it's on the docking station, it will turn off the display on the laptop monitor and then show the display on the external monitor. Closing the lid turns off the external display and turns on the display on the closed laptop monitor. (2) extends the desktop display onto the external monitor which leaves me without panels, desktop icons, etc. since they are on the closed and inaccessible laptop monitor. Neither of these are helpful. If Ubuntu can consider the laptop monitor to be disconnected when the lid is closed, I believe that Ubuntu will see only one monitor and do the sensible thing. [Bug 552624] [NEW] Computer thinks 2nd monitor is connected when it's not
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Occasionally, when I boot or I am using my computer, I am able to move my mouse pointer off far off of the screen onto a non-existent second monitor. If I open the display properties, the screen will flash and only one monitor is shown. If I click the Apply button, then the problem is fixed. However, the problem can sometimes, but not always, return when I play a video in Totem. I again have to go to display properties to fix it. I've also seen the problem when GDM appears. My screen will have the GDM background but no other GDM items. I notice that I can move my pointer far off the screen. The only recourse in this situation is to cut power and restart since I can't even shutdown or reboot. [Bug 513468] [NEW] "Dim display when idle" does not respect idle time setting
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager When the "Dim display when idle" option is enabled in the Power Management Preferences, the display will dim after a few, seemingly random, seconds. The help document for the Power Management says that the Screensaver Preferences are used to set the session idle time. I have that value set to 10 minutes. When I enable the setting and let my system sit idle, the screen has gone dim at the following approximate times: 12 seconds 26 seconds 38 seconds 78 seconds It seems that each time it waits for a longer period of time before dimming. If I reboot, it starts over with dimming at just a few seconds. Steps to reproduce: 1. Go to System -> Preferences -> Power Management 2. Enable "Dim display when idle". Click Close 3. Wait and do not move the mouse or press a key. Expected result: Display should not dim until the session idle time, set in the screensaver preferences, is reached. Actual result: Display dims at random times. Reproducibility: Always, although the interval increases with each dimming until a reboot. ** Affects: hundredpapercuts Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: hundredpapercuts Importance: Undecided Status: New -- "Dim display when idle" does not respect idle time setting https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/513468 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 511670] Re: Gedit displays shadow on top of edit window in fullscreen mode
I believe this is a papercut because the toolbar could be removed after retraction, and added back before it slides into view. I haven't looked at the source yet to see how easy it might be. [Bug 511670] Re: Gedit displays shadow on top of edit window in fullscreen mode
@om26er: This is not invalid. Suggesting that someone disable the default settings and features in their window manager to solve a bug in another program is not an acceptable solution. The fact remains that gedit is in fullscreen mode and a shadow is obscuring the top line of text. This happens in the default Ubuntu configuration as Ubuntu ships. There is also precedent for fixing shadow problems. See this past papercut for reference: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/91786 I also believe that this is a valid papercut. When the user moves the pointer to the top of the screen, gedit will slide down a toolbar. This toolbar is retracted to above the top of the screen when the pointer is moved away. It's likely that the shadow can be removed if the toolbar is removed or made opaque once the toolbar is no longer visible. ** Changed in: hundredpapercuts Status: Invalid => New ** Changed in: gedit (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => New -- Gedit displays shadow on top of edit window in fullscreen mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/511670 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
