[Bug 1839856] Re: Screen resolution on external monitor won't go above 2560 x 1080

2019-09-18 Thread Matt White
I went back pretty far, into the 4.x versions, and still had the same
results, so I'm guessing this isn't kernel-related. Any suggestion on
what else to try?

I tried both 5.2.11 and 5.3-rc6. Same result with both.

[Bug 1839856] [NEW] Screen resolution on external monitor won't go above 2560 x 1080

2019-08-12 Thread Matt White
Public bug reported:

I have an external monitor capable of 3440 x 1440. I am using a Thinkpad
T480s. Up until about 2 weeks ago, I could set the resolution of the
monitor to 3440 x 1440 just fine. Now when I try, the screen goes black
and I have to revert to a lower resolution. The highest it will go now
is 2560 x 1080. Lower resolutions work fine as well.

[Bug 1328616] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad T530] Touchpad working intermittently

Strangely enough, it was my power adapter causing the problem. I don't
know exactly how, but when I unplug it, all is well. Lesson learned:
don't by the cheapest power adapter on Amazon.com :)

[Bug 1328616] [NEW] Touchpad working intermittently

2014-06-10 Thread Matt White
Public bug reported:

My touchpad only responds about 10% of the time I use it. It's extremely
intermittent and unreliable. I use a Lenovo Thinkpad T530 with Ubuntu
14.04, kernel version 3.13.0-29. This problem has persisted since the
previous version of Ubuntu, although I didn't make a note of what kernel
versions. I'm not exactly sure when it started since I use an external
mouse most of the time. My Thinkpad has one of those "pencil eraser"
type mouses in the middle of the keyboard as well, and it works just
fine. All mouse buttons work fine as well.

[Bug 1083984] Re: Brightness control doesn't work on Lenovo Thinkpad T530

2013-03-22 Thread Matt White
Sorry for the delayed response. Fn+Space turns the keyboard backlight and
Thinklight on, but does nothing for the screen brightness. Please also see
this report: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51131

Aaron at the end says we're depending on Nvidia for brightness control. Is
this true?

Thanks,
Matt

[Bug 991707] Re: Mouse pointer (touchpad) gets stuck often

2013-01-09 Thread Matt White
This is still an issue in 12.10, kernel 3.5.0-21-generic. I can
reproduce it by simply closing the lid on my Thinkpad T530. I have mine
set to only turn off the screen when the lid is closed and not suspend.
I can confirm that Adolfo's workaround of dropping to a terminal fixes
the issue.

longer have that system so I can't confirm 12.10 kernels are ok but we
can assume yes. Thank you.

I can try the new kernel, yes. Also, I have tried the Noveau driver as
well as the Nvidia driver, so I don't think it's a problem with the
driver.

I noticed this interesting output from dmesg - any suggestions after
looking over it? Thanks so much for looking at this issue with me.

[Bug 1083984] [NEW] Brightness control doesn't work on Lenovo Thinkpad T530

2012-11-28 Thread Matt White
Public bug reported:

Following instructions on
https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight

I have tried in /etc/default/grub: kernel parameters
acpi_backlight=vendor, thinkpad-acpi.brightness_enable=1.

I have tried /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-brightness-control.conf:
Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"

I have tried editing /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness with
tee

None of these have enabled brightness control. If I boot with integrated
graphics instead of Nvidia, it works fine. (Note: this laptop has
Optimus). Any further suggestions?

[Bug 1067915] Re: gedit can't open a txt file

2012-11-12 Thread Matt White
I am continuing to get this error on files that used to be able to be
opened by gEdit. Here's an error message that is logged relating to
this:

** (gedit:13182): WARNING **: Hit unhandled case 1 (Invalid byte
sequence in conversion input) in parse_error.

[Bug 1067915] Re: gedit can't open a txt file

2012-10-29 Thread Matt White
Bizarre workaround for this bug: cat the file from the command line and
then copy and paste it back into a new text file in gedit. I had to
copy-paste-save it in sections, because if I pasted the entire document
into gedit all at once, the invalid byte sequence error remained.

[Bug 1067915] Re: gedit can't open a txt file

2012-10-25 Thread Matt White
Just upgraded to Quantal a week ago. Used gedit to edit a text file
this morning and it worked fine. Restarted my computer and then tried
to edit the same file again and got "Unexpected error: Invalid byte
sequence in conversion input."

There shouldn't be any strange characters in the file.

[Bug 683133] Re: Keyboard backlight does not work on Toshiba Satellite M series laptops

2012-10-12 Thread Matt White
I think most of us have just learned to live with it, hence the lack of
complaining. But it's still annoying when I try to code in the dark. Why
don't we just get it fixed?

[Bug 862430] Re: window flicker for a short time after switching workspaces

2012-07-17 Thread Matt White
For anyone who has accidentally upgraded compiz and the flickering has
reappeared, this is what I did to fix it:

# list all packages that need to be downgraded
dpkg -l | grep '0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1.2'

# see what versions are available
apt-cache show compiz | grep Version: | awk '{ print $2 }'

# downgrade
sudo aptitude install compiz=1:0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1vvpreproposed2
compiz-core=1:0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1vvpreproposed2
compiz-gnome=1:0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1vvpreproposed2
compiz-plugins=1:0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1vvpreproposed2
compiz-plugins=1:0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1vvpreproposed2
compiz-plugins-default=1:0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1vvpreproposed2
libdecoration0=1:0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1vvpreproposed2

# restart compiz
compiz --replace

Then just remember not to upgrade it again. Of course, you could also
just pin the package at the PPA version, but then you'd have to remember
to unpin it in the future.

[Bug 989919] [NEW] Wireless mouse not working

2012-04-27 Thread Matt White
Public bug reported:

I have a Logitech M510 mouse and K350 keyboard combo that connect
wirelessly to a USB dongle. After upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04, the
keyboard works fine but the mouse doesn't. I have tried changing
batteries, clicking buttons, reconnecting the dongle, rebooting, etc.,
to no avail. The mouse works fine on another system. What's going on??

[Bug 989893] [NEW] Audio doesn't correctly switch when headphones are plugged in/unplugged

2012-04-27 Thread Matt White
Public bug reported:

If I plug in my headphones, it switches to "Digital Output (S/PDIF)" and
I hear no sound. The bottom option in the hardware list correctly
changes to "Headphones", but it doesn't automatically choose that
option. If I manually click "Headphones" at that point, the sound works
through the headphones. If I unplug them, it also switches to "Digital
Output (S/PDIF)", and the bottom option in the hardware list changes to
"Speakers". If I manually click "Speakers", the speakers work as
expected.

[Bug 879574] Re: PCI/internal sound card not detected

2011-10-21 Thread Matt White
Following step 1 here fixed the no sound problem:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

But I still have the muted headphone jack problem. I've played around in
alsamixer and I've tried various models with options snd-hda-intel
model=MODELNAME in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, but nothing seems to
fix this problem. If I go into sound settings, output tab, and manually
change "Connector", I can get speakers muted with headphones on, but
that's really annoying. The Connector also changes automatically when I
plug in the headphones but it only works correctly if I manually switch
it. I have a Realtek ALC665. Any ideas?

[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher

2011-10-17 Thread Matt White
This argument of keeping the launcher near the Ubuntu button is
nonsense. The Ubuntu button already appears to be part of the launcher,
so if I want to move the launcher to the bottom of the screen, I would
*expect* the Ubuntu button to move down there with it, thus making a
win-win. Having the launcher on the left side is annoying if you're
using Autohide or Dodge settings because when you move your mouse to the
left side of the screen, you often cause the launcher to pop up when you
didn't want it to. It seems to me that the bottom is more ideal than the
left. It gets in the way much less often and is the expected place to
find it if you're moving from Windows.

[Bug 674138] Re: "Global" appmenu breaks sloppy focus

2011-07-30 Thread Matt White
I had a similar problem in windows 7, except that it will allow you to
apply the activation delay to focusing a window (I set it to 80ms) which
I have not been able to do in linux.

Linux has an activation delay but it seems to only apply to raising a
window. If this could be enabled for focusing windows then I can get my
mouse to the menu at the top of the screen, passing thru other windows
quickly without activating them.

[Bug 361993] Re: MAPI - can't send mails to addresses on same server

2011-02-22 Thread Matt White
Johan,

I can confirm that. If I send to t...@mydomain.com it works perfectly.
If I try t...@mydomain.com it just sits in the Outbox and eventually
that cannot send error pops up. Good call!

[Bug 683133] Re: Keyboard backlight does not work on Toshiba Satellite M series laptops

2011-01-28 Thread Matt White
Jeremy,

It is indeed still an issue. Unfortunately I can't check with the latest
dev version of Ubuntu as this is a work machine. Sorry!

** Description changed:

Disabling ACPI causes the backlight to work perfectly. However, this has the
unfortunate side effect of disabling monitor brightness control and suspend
ability (and likely other things). Is there a way we can just disable ACPI for
the keyboard alone?

[Bug 683133] [NEW] Keyboard backlight does not work on Toshiba Satellite M series laptops

2010-11-30 Thread Matt White
Public bug reported:

Disabling ACPI causes the backlight to work perfectly. However, this has
the unfortunate side effect of disabling monitor brightness control and
suspend ability (and likely other things). Is there a way we can just
disable ACPI for the keyboard alone?
