ahh, there were 5 packages held back for some reason (gparted, esound-
clients and dependents). I used synaptic to upgrade them manually and
now update-manager is happy.

2010-06-14 Thread Matt Wilkie
3 additional times update-manager said a partial upgrade was
recommended. I answered yes, and it installed and removed some stuff.

However now whenever I run update-manager it still offers a partial
upgrade, but each time I do it stops with "Your system is up to date.
There are no upgrades available for your system. The upgrade will now be
cancelled".

I let it install the other updates. When finished it wanted to do a
partial upgrade, which I said yes to. After that I seemed to have been
finally upgraded to 10.4. However after reboot the display was broken,
which is why it's taken me so long to get back to this.

2010-05-29 Thread Matt Wilkie
While I was typing this bug report two Update Manager dialogs popped up. I did
nothing to summon them.
One is a warning, "Not all updates can be installed", "run a partial upgrade to
...etc"
The second is "Software updates are available for this computer", "New Ubuntu
release '10.04 LTS' is available", with some "Other updates" listed beneath.

[Bug 587411] [NEW] 10.4 cdromupgrade crashes with "if not "universe" in self.found_components[self.toDist]: KeyError: 'lucid' "

2010-05-29 Thread Matt Wilkie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I'm trying to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.4 using the alternate cd (amd64).
I put the cd in the drive, answered yes to run distribution upgrade,
No to use network, Yes to overwrite sources even though there is no mirror
specified.
It did some things, then disappeared with no message or warning.
The lightning crash icon appeared in the menu bar.
When I clicked on it and said yes to report bug it told me it couldn't gave me
a huge list of outdated packages as to the reason why.

I then opened a terminal and ran 'sudo sh /path/to/cdromupgrade'.
Same results as previous but with messages in the console, pasted below.

This system has been upgraded several times over the years; I think I started
with Ubuntu 7.10.
The last dist-upgrade was a couple of weeks ago, 9.4 to 9.10. Other than some
annoying problems with losing access to the local console to do the dreading
flashing screen bug, now fixed, that upgrade was without obvious error. I've
used the system in the interim normal activities (mail, surfing, some inkscape
drawing).

[Bug 464591] Re: upgrade breaks graphic drivers and x, preventing login or startx

2010-05-21 Thread Matt Wilkie
this is what got my system working again:

*  ssh in from remote
* delete existing /etc/X11/xorg.conf (this step may not have been needed)
* download from nvidia.com the NVIDIA-Linux-*.run for your hardware and
copy it to your PC (I did it with a second PC and transfered via scp)
* run the NVIDIA-Linux-*.run
* Follow the instructions
* reboot

[Bug 464591] Re: upgrade breaks graphic drivers and x, preventing login or startx

2010-05-21 Thread Matt Wilkie
how can this bug possibly be marked "invalid"??

I had a system running just fine 9.04, answered "yes" to upgrade to
9.10, went through that process for awhile, rebooted, and now the only
way I can use my computer is ssh in from remote because the local
display is either flickering like mad or completely blank (after
renaming/deleting xorg.conf). So yes "upgrade breaks graphic drivers and
x, preventing login or startx" is true and real.

I feel for the maintainer(s) whose nerves worn to a nub. A whole lot of
people complaining at you and expecting you to fix their pain is *not*
fun, or easy. That does not make the users pain irrelevant or not real
though. So if you've had enough, say so. If you don't have the
time/energy/resources/motivation to fix the problem, say that. Please
don't tell us the bug does not exist, I'm staring right it and so are a
lot of others.

[Bug 330424] Re: process consumes all ram, reading X keyboard settings over and over again

2009-03-20 Thread Matt Wilkie
KDE-based games which work are: kbounce, kmahjong, klotski, kpatience.
Other KDE-based apps which work are: kimagemapeditor, klinkstatus, kmdr-editor,
kxsldbg, kompozer, kfilereplace, digikam, kexi, kword, kspread.

Other problem games are:
- katomic
- klines
- kgoldrunner - crashes and spawns drkonqi, which in turns eats all ram. If
started with sudo, kgoldrunner runs normally.
- kolf - gets to point of showing a window frame and menu bar before
runaway-ram starts.
- ktuberling

I've now tested all of the programs available from the menu.

Output of 'sudo strace -o vbox-strace.txt /usr/bin/virtualbox' is
attached. I killed virtualbox process after it had consumed ~560mb of
ram without showing any interface elements (e.g. splash screen, menu).

[Bug 330424] Re: process consumes all ram, reading X keyboard settings over and over again

2009-03-15 Thread Matt Wilkie
Virtualbox OSE also goes haywire with ram useage; I let it use up over
2gb before killing the process (no point in letting it get to the point
of thrashing my hard drive for hours on end IMO). The strace for vbox
looks the same as for vlc and k9copy.

I've now run every program in the main menu from Accessories through the
end of Other, plus Sound & Video, and not counting Games. There are 40
or so more programs to test, most of them games, before I've testing
every program installed with a menu entry. I'll try and do the rest
within the next day or so.

2009-03-11 Thread Matt Wilkie
Thank you for trying to reproduce the problem. Do you have any
suggestions for what can be done to identify the thread that *is*
causing the crash?

And, a correction: Open Office doesn't start the runaway ram consumption
anymore. Perhaps it only appeared to be involved earlier. I observed oo
with my son, and he may have attempted to start vlc/k9copy earlier and I
didn't notice.

[Bug 330424] Re: process consumes all ram, reading X keyboard settings over and over again

2009-02-25 Thread Matt Wilkie
I waited 13 hours, with no visible change from this morning: screen
blank, no response to mouse or stylus movement (though both devices'
LEDs light up when moved), hard drive light steady and audibly chugging
away. I was mistaken about there being no keyboard response: there was,
only with about a 30 second delay before the LEDs responded. [ctrl-alt-
backspace] and [ctrl-alt-F#] did not seem to do anything: I did not
observe any change in drive activity and after 5 minutes there was no
change to the display.

I pushed the power button for 5 seconds, the machine powered off. I
waited a few minutes before turning it back on again. The system booted
normally and appears functional, so long as I stay away from vlc,
k9copy, and open office. I haven't tried very hard to see what other
programs might trigger the runaway memory.

Please, what do I need to do to get to the bottom of this?

thank you.

[Bug 330424] Re: process consumes all ram, reading X keyboard settings over and over again

2009-02-25 Thread Matt Wilkie
For the previous xorg log I killed the runaway process (k9copy) when it
had consumed 98% of the ram. I am running it again now and am letting it
take the full course. The display is now frozen, the mouse cursor does
not respond to movement, even the keyboard has stopped responding to
caps and numlock (the LEDs do not light/unlight). The hard drive light
is on steady and I can hear the drive going like crazy. It has been in
this state for about 30 minutes. I'm about to leave for work and will
report back in about 10 hours or so.

[Bug 330424] [NEW] process consumes all ram, reading X keyboard settings over and over again

2009-02-17 Thread Matt Wilkie
Public bug reported:

If I attempt to run OpenOffice, VLC, or K9copy (there may be others too,
these are just the ones I've identified) the process rapidly consumes
(>500mb in 1 minute) all available ram and renders the system unusable.
If I turn swapoff the computer will recover after a time, having killed
the offending process, and I can use the computer again. If swap is not
turned off, even after 15 hours the computer is almost completely
unresponsive even after 15 hours of disk thrashing.

Based on advice of johanbr on #ubuntu-ca I ran 'strace -p
$k9copy_process_id 2>strace-k9copy.log'. The log is 22mb. I'll post the
head and tail of 100 lines below. Johanbr said the process keeps re-
reading the X keyboard settings over and over again and asked if I have
an unusual keyboard configuration -- I don't believe so.

System > Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard preferences says keyboard
"Dell" with USA layout. It is actually an IBM model SK-8820, however
that model is not available in the IBM section. There are two dell
models with similar model numbers: SK-8125, SK-8135.

>From System > Preferences > Keyboard I changed the keyboard to Generic 101 key
>and applied system wide.
K9copy still consumes all available ram, or I presume it would if I let it. I
killed it from System Monitor after it used >900mb and still hadn't shown a
splash screen or window.

Also see https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/56166

My system vital statistics:

Ubuntu 8.10 amd64
Kernel 2.6.27-11-generic
Gnome 2.24.1
AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
115gb available disk space (of 290gb)
3GB of ram.

I believe the first ubuntu release installed on this computer was 5.10
but it may have been 6.04. It's been upgraded in-situ ever since. I
regularly check and apply updates (weekly or better). I did not
experience any problems of this sort until upgrading to 8.10 (yes this
has been going on for several months now).

I managed to get ia32-libs installed yesterday by "apt-get remove

[Bug 227128] Re: could not calculate the upgrade, yet answer clearly in logfile

2008-05-07 Thread Matt Wilkie
okay, log files are now attached.

>From your response I'm not sure if the substance of my bug report is
understood: I'm not reporting, so much, that update-manager doesn't like
the proprietary nvidia drivers, rather that the popup error message is
vague and that if it were more direct about telling people to look at
the logfiles it might potentially save frustration and needless
searching about and uninstalling of unofficial program X which may be
entirely innocent.

Could not calculate the upgrade

A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against
the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in
the bugreport.
 (emphasis added)

I had initially skipped over the last sentence, containing the path to
the logfiles, because of the wording in the first phrase: "If none of
this applies". I saw those words, noted that I am running unofficial
packages, and so stopped reading because obviously the rest wasn't for
me.

I would have let it sit there and not bothered you with a bug report
here, except that in my searches I encountered a number of threads on
ubuntu forums and in the mailing list where others had made the same
hasty mistake I did. Perhaps if the wording were changed a bit or there
was a button to open the logfile directory it would divert some of the
needless casting about.

[Bug 227128] [NEW] could not calculate the upgrade, yet answer clearly in logfile

2008-05-05 Thread Matt Wilkie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Update manager tells me it could not calculate the upgrade, and gives a
vague variety of possible causes, but a quick perusal of the dist-
upgrade logfile pinpoints precisely where the stoppage occured [1]. If
it is beyond scope of update manager to parse the results of the logfile
and respond accordingly, it should at least tell users to inspect it.

At least I didn't go very far down the road described in the
troubleshooting threads I was reading. The sign post for that road might
read "keep uninstalling the programs which might be causing the problems
and try again".

[1] The problem:
2008-05-03 22:13:39,777 DEBUG The package 'nvidia-glx-new' is marked for
removal but it's in the removal blacklist
2008-05-03 22:14:02,990 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'An essential package

[Bug 141106] Re: network manager crashes when /etc/network/interfaces is touched [race]

2008-01-31 Thread Matt Wilkie
ok, I have automatic wireless back. Following a comment on Linux.com[1],
I changed both the wired and wireless networks to roaming mode and then
rebooted. Voila! I can now see all the wireless networks in my vicinity.
Before rebooting I tried simply logging off and back on again but that
didn't change anything. I suspect that rebooting was the key, that I
didn't need to change the wired network to roaming also, but I'm not
about to test it now as I don't want to break it again.

[Bug 116476] Re: distribution upgrade "A fatal error occured"

2008-01-30 Thread Matt Wilkie
Hi Pedro, I understand closing this as there has been no activity for
some time (because I gave up and nuked the system after no feedback and
not knowing what else to do). However in what sense is this not a bug
report? I ran a program which ran into a difficulty, spewed out some
errors and exitted ungracefully. I reported same.

I'm not trying to be difficult I just want to understand the difference
between a bug report and a support request.

changed BIOS to parallel port setting to ECP. Now starting xsane as user
reports no devices available. Starting xsane as root takes about twice
as long to start, says there are no devices available, and then about
half a second later the scanner gives it's little wake up dance.

[Bug 173393] canoscan FB330P starts scan, then stalls

2007-12-01 Thread Matt Wilkie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xsane

Start xsane, press any one of [preview], [scan], [calibrate], can hear
the scanner head moving as normal for about 2 or 3 seconds, then
nothing. At this point the xsane dialogs can be repositioned but their
contents do not redraw. After about 10 minutes the scanner head can be
heard moving back to park (I assume). Xsane is still not responsive and
must be [Force Quit].

On repeat runs after force quit and not waiting for the scanner to move
back to park by itself, during the xsane initialization phase I hear the
normal sounds of the scanner waking up and getting ready. (I've used
this scanner for a couple of years under windows 2000, before switching
to ubuntu full time this last spring).

I've installed (well enabled really) the scanner by editing
/etc/sane.d/dll.conf and uncommenting "canon_pp"; then set permissions
on /dev/parport0 to 777 so I don't have to always run xsane as root
(c.f. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsScannersCanon,
2007-Sep-06 entry for FB630P)

I get the same behaviour regardless of whether I run xsane from root or
user.

Following the advice in the thread
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2753887&postcount=22 I've
captured debug logging output. Further on in that same thread there are
suggestions to try forcenibble in the dll.conf, which I've also tried
with no observable change. My parallel port is set to EPP in BIOS (ASUS
M2NPV-VM ACPI BIOS Revision 0603).

$ export SANE_DEBUG_CANON_PP=100
$ xsane 1> xsane.log 2> xsane.err

In preparing this bug report I've repeated these steps about a dozen
times, the third last time, the scan actually worked. On the following
attempt, there were about 3 rows of pixels in the preview window before
it stalled. On all previous attempts I saw nothing in the preview window
but the sane logo. There is a thread in ubuntu forums describing a
similar problem with no resolution
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2763187&postcount=27)

I'm a little confused as there is both a /etc/sane.d/dll.conf and a
/etc/sane.d/canon_pp.conf and their contents are near identical for the
first 37 lines. However setting forcenibble in either one seems to work.

[Bug 123389] Re: Mouse Pointer goes invisible after Re-login

2007-09-17 Thread Matt Wilkie
This bug also affects me. In addition to losing the mouse visibility
when logging out or restarting with ctr-alt-bkspc as others have
described above, it also happens sometimes when switching users.

My video card is an nvidia geforce 6150, I'm running Fiesty 64bit on AMD.
I've tried vesa, nv and nvidia restricted drivers. The loss of visibility only
seems to occur when the screen refresh is set higher than 60hz (not sure about
this). My usual resolution is 1280x1024 @85hz.

I bought this computer in June, been running 64bit Fiesty the whole
time, but don't recall running into this bug before the beginning of
August or thereabouts. Don't know if that's because of updates to
ubuntu, which I apply as I am notified of their availability, or
something I've installed or fiddled with.

BTW: to anyone affected by this frequently, if you go to System >
Preferences > Mouse there is an option to hilight the mouse when control
is pressed. With this aid one can at least save work in progress etc.
when in a location which is not completely keyboard accessible.

[Bug 116476] Re: distribution upgrade "A fatal error occured"

2007-05-29 Thread Matt Wilkie
apt-get dist-upgrade completed this time around with no errors.
However I am still unable to turn the computer off or reboot it.
I eventually figured out I could get the menus back by using
[ctr-alt-backspace] to kill the Xserver, and then at the resulting login prompt
change the Session back to Gnome from xfce. Unfortunately when I go to
"System>Quit" the only options I have are to Log Out, Switch User, Lock Screen,
or Hibernate.
I went to "System > Preferences > Power Management" and changed the when power
button pressed setting from Hibernate to Shutdown but this has no effect.
Hibernating does not work, it just locks the screen (nothing new there,
hibernation has never worked on this computer).

In the Notification Area there is in icon indicating a system restart is
required, but when I push the [restart now] button the only thing it
appears to do is the same as [ctr-alt-backspace]. I tried installing
gshutdown but it does the same thing.

Now I'm just going to hit the hardware reset button and hope for the
best.

[Bug 116476] Re: distribution upgrade "A fatal error occured"

2007-05-29 Thread Matt Wilkie
ok, I might be hosed now. When I went to shutdown my machine the
shutdown dialog was using boxes instead of characters. Not being able to
read the menu, I selected the two circling blue arrows thinking that was
the reboot option. As expected the progams closed and the screen
blanked. However I was immediately presented with the standard login
screen so I'm thinking instead of rebooting the machine it just
restarted the xserver. I logged in as usual. I see my standard deskop
but there is no header or footer bar. Thankfully [alt-F2] still brings
up the Run dialog so I am not totally without tools.

Entering "sudo reboot" or "sudo shutdown" in a terminal results in
"command not found".

Courtesy of this page http://douglasfshearer.com/blog/command-line-
upgrade-to-ubunty-feisty-fawn-704 I realised that the difference I
questioned earlier between update-manager and apt-get is because I
should of have been using "apt-get dist-upgrade" instead of just
upgrade. I'm now going to try that in hopes I've not totally hosed my
system.

[Bug 116476] Re: distribution upgrade "A fatal error occured"

2007-05-29 Thread Matt Wilkie
ran sudo apt-get upgrade again, recieved same swat dialog prompt, answered the
same, and install continued a little bit farther:
-
Setting up python-tk (2.5.1-0ubuntu1) ...
Setting up unattended-upgrades (0.23ubuntu3) ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
 swat
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
-

ran again and this time told it to ignore the swat entries at which
point the install finished without error. There are 38 packages which
were not upgraded; how do I find out why?

-
The following packages have been kept back:
  apache-dev avahi-daemon bind9-host bittorrent cdda2wav cdrecord dnsutils
  dvd+rw-tools evince f-spot foo2zjs gdebi gnome-app-install
  gnome-volume-manager gnomebaker gnupg gxine libbind9-0 libbtctl4 libisccfg1
  libmono-system1.0-cil libossp-uuid-perl libthunar-vfs-1-2 libxine1 linux-386
  linux-headers-generic linux-image-386 linux-restricted-modules-386 mkisofs
  pdftohtml python-numpy python-numpy-ext tomboy ubuntu-artwork ubuntu-desktop
  ubuntu-docs usplash xubuntu-desktop
-

I can now run Synaptic again, with my password being accepted and the square
boxes replaced with the familiar circles.

"gksudo update-manager" also works again, though there is an error in
the terminal on startup, "warning: could not initiate dbus"

Update-manager reports 107 updates available. I'm confused as to why
update-manager says this at the same time "sudo apt-get upgrade" reports
0. I'm going to restart my machine before trying this.

[Bug 116476] Re: distribution upgrade "A fatal error occured"

2007-05-29 Thread Matt Wilkie
sudop apt-get upgrade worked, until a point. Prior to the error below
there was a dialog about ignoring the multiple swat entries in
inet.d/conf, for which I answered affirmative (yes ignore).

-
Setting up scim (1.4.4-7ubuntu1) ...

Setting up scim-anthy (1.2.1-1build1) ...
Setting up scim-pinyin (0.5.91-0ubuntu7) ...

Errors were encountered while processing:
 swat
daemon process restarted, pid=16476
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

[Bug 116476] Re: distribution upgrade "A fatal error occured"

2007-05-23 Thread Matt Wilkie
I remember some more: I started the upgrade with "gksudo update-manager" from a
terminal.
That command now fails with "ImportError: No module named pygtk"

Furthermore when I try and run Synaptic from the applications menu, it
tells my administrative password is incorrect. When I type my password
in instead of seeing the usual black dots for characters there is a
square white box.

Thankfully apt-get still works. 'sudo apt-get check' reports no errors.
Now about to try 'sudo apt-get upgrade'.

[Bug 116476] distribution upgrade "A fatal error occured"

2007-05-23 Thread Matt Wilkie
Public bug reported:

using synaptic package manager, slapped the upgrade to feisty button (I
think, it was awhile ago). The error messag in the popup window is
below, followed by the last section of background Terminal window.
Ack! no terminal window contents, it wouldn't let me select and copy the
text, and when I closed the popup error window the terminal closed also
-- along with the intructions of some other files which I'm supposed to
upload along with this bug report. It was something about a missing
package called "apport", I think.

[Bug 41333] Re: Logging into an existing locked session with gdm should also unlock screensaver

2007-04-29 Thread Matt Wilkie
A workaround which can be used for some while waiting for this to be
fixed, is to use [Ctrl-Alt-F#] to switch between _already logged in_
users, where # is 7,9,10, ( and 11,12 ?).

thank you Schalken for pointing this out,
