[Bug 1963794] Re: apt-avahi-discover script uses deprecated asyncore module

2024-03-31 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Using the script from the PR fixed it on my client. However, when
installing squid-deb-proxy-client on the server that is also running
squid-deb-proxy then the original apt-avahi-discover script emits the
mentioned warning but otherwise works fine. But the script from the PR
results in the following error:

[Bug 1069793] Re: Can't install search engines (Tramples over window.external)

2014-08-30 Thread Matthäus Brandl
I can confirm that this remains broken, the page from the bug description
actually works, but not the plugins on Mycroft Project:
http://mycroftproject.com/dlstats.html
DIsabling the plugin "Unity Desktop Integration 3.0.2" and restarting Firefox
still fixes this.

I'll change the bug description accordingly.

** Description changed:

This addon replaces windows.external with it's own object, breaking the
ability to install Opensearch plugins from JS (
  window.external.AddSearchProvider() )

  TESTCASE:
- 1) Go to https://startpage.com/eng/download-startpage-plugin.html
- 2) Click on the blue "Install" button (either of both)
- 3) You should get a question whether you want to install the search plugin.
+ 1) Go to http://mycroftproject.com/dlstats.html
+ 2) Choose any of the OpenSearch plugins and click on the name
+
+ EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR:
+ A modal window should pop up asking if the chosen plugin really should be
installed
+
+ ACTUAL BEHAVIOUR:
+ A modal window pops up stating that the browser does not support OpenSearch
plugins

[Bug 1149231] [NEW] UDI breaks adding Search Engine plugins on http://mycroftproject.com

2013-03-06 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Public bug reported:

The addon "Unity Desktop Integration" (currently v2.4.4) breaks the ability to
add search engines on http://mycroftproject.com
Affected are all OpenSearch Plugins (marked with A9), trying to install a
plugin results in an error message stating that Javascript needs to be enabled.

Once the addon is disabled everything works as expected. (a popup opens
asking me if I really want to install the plugin)

[Bug 672565] Re: [clock docklet] The check box allowing to switch between 12h and 24h mode is disabled using the analogue clock

2010-11-30 Thread Matthäus Brandl
I just realized that there exists the possibility to use a 12h mode analogue
clock. But you can only choose in digital clock mode. The analogue mode
disables the check box, but respects its setting.
So in the end this is a bug, don't disable the check box in analogue mode and
you're done.

Would be nice to be able to switch to the usual 12h format, because I'm
not used to 24h clocks. This makes it really hard to read and thus takes
away the big advantage that analogue clocks have.

[Bug 672565] [NEW] [clock docklet] Analogue clock displays wrong time

2010-11-08 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: docky

The hour hand of the analogue clock is displaying complete nonsense. Right now
it is 15:09h (GMT+1), both the clock in gnome-applet as well as tha digital
clock of the docklet display this time correctly. The minute hand of the
analogue clock displays :09h correctly, too. But the hour clock is somewhere in
the middle between 6 and 7 o'clock.
The small box appearing while hovering with the mouse over the clock also shows
the correct time.

[Bug 661711] Re: Hibernate fails on Thinkpad X60

2010-10-20 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Actually I can change virtual terminals using Alt-F[1-6], but you shouldn't try
to change to the X-server (Alt-F7) because this will hang your system.
However I can't login, because the system doesn't react to keyboard usage. (ie
I can't enter my username)
The only thing that works are the Magic SysRey keys. (I use REISUB to reboot)

Using an Tp X60s with upgraded Maverick.

[Bug 456085] Re: [Regression] Hibernate and battery status key don't work on Thinkpad X60s

2010-10-16 Thread Matthäus Brandl
acpi_listen yields the same result, however pressing Fn-F3 now shows a
libnotify-message with the energy information.
Fn-F12 now starts nautilus, which might be useful, but is not exactly what I
would expect.

[Bug 515615] [NEW] enigmail causes thunderbird to freeze

2010-02-01 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: enigmail

While thunderbird/engimail is waiting for pinentry-gtk2 to return the
passphrase, thunderbird occasionally (about 1 in 10 times) freezes. A dialogue
pops up asking whether to cancel or shut thunderbird down (kill it).
This is very nasty, as it takes pinentry's focus away. I can't return to
pinentry neither using Alt-Tab key combination nor using compiz, but only by
clicking on the according area in the panel (in my case gnome do). Once
returned to pinentry it has sent my partial passphrase back to GnuPG which of
course resulted as wrong and I need to retype my passphrase. (see #515608)

enigmail shouldn't freeze thunderbird, both should wait for pinentry to
return the passphrase.

This bug seems related to #150057, but in this case signing etc actually
works without problems almost all the time, but sometimes usability
becomes quite shortened. Only in some very rare cases all three attempts
fail and I have to start all over again.

[Bug 515608] [NEW] pinentry-gtk2 sends the hitherto entered characters when Thunderbird stalls

2010-02-01 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 9.10 and pinentry-gtk2 0.7.6 it happens sometimes (in 1 of at most
10 cases) that Thunderbird suddenly stalls (greys out) and a window pops up,
asking me if I want to kill the thunderbird process or cancel. I then need to
click cancel and return to the pinentry dialogue.
But instead of being able to continue with typing in my passphrase it has
already sent the hitherto typed part of the passphrase which of course is
wrong. Because of this, pinentry tells me that my passphrase was wrong and I
have to retype it.

It is OK that pinentry-gtk2 clears the input box in this case as it is
quite cumbersome to continue with the passphrase (which one is the last
character) but it shouldn't send the partial passphrase.

[Bug 494069] Re: hpodder doesn't handle unicode correctly

2009-12-15 Thread Matthäus Brandl
To be accurate, not every feeds seems to be affected. I experienced problems
with:
* http://gffstream-6.vo.llnwd.net/e1/podcast/bruno-jonas-rosstaeuscher/cast.xml
which is encoded as ISO-8859-1
* http://download.br-online.de/podcast/iq/cast.xml
which is encoded as ISO-8859-1 as well

While the following feed which contains Spanish accented letters (eg á) is NOT
affected:
* http://feeds.feedburner.com/vocespodcast?format=xml
which is encoded as UTF-8

I suppose it's the non UTF-8 encoding which makes it hard for hpodder

[Bug 494069] [NEW] hpodder doesn't handle unicode correctly

2009-12-08 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hpodder

I'm using hpodder 1.1.5.0 on karmic with the following naming pattern:
% cat ~/.hpodder/hpodder.conf | grep patt
namingpatt = %(safecasttitle)s/%(epid)s-%(safeeptitle)s

I'm listening to German podcasts which occasionally contain umlauts (ie äöü) in
their episode titles.
The files hpodder saves are not named with the correct encoding: (nautilus
displays the filename with an appended "(invalid encoding)")
% ls 4*
4-Spielr?ume_-_15.10.2009

I'd expect the ouput to be
4-Spielräume_-_15.10.2009

When I want to copy the file using tab expansion in the zsh, it gets
globed to "cp 4-Spielr$'\344'ume_-_15.10.2009"

hpodder is downloading the podcast to an ext3 partition. As a
consequence it seems that I can't copy my podcasts with unison to my
vfat based audio player.

[Bug 347328] Re: GNOME Do 'End' of result list animation is too slow

2009-12-06 Thread Matthäus Brandl
This bugges me as well.
Another solution might be scaling the animation speed by the number of list
items, so that it always takes eg 1sec. That would give some optical feedback
of what's happening. (might look fancy if the speed behaves like a sine)
But it's hard to imagine the usability.

[Bug 471367] [NEW] Notify message doesn't blur out when underlying element is/gets focused

2009-11-02 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Public bug reported:

3)
The notify messages should blur out, if a underlying elements are/get focused.
4)
The notify messages impede you when trying to fill in a text box located in the
notify area

Steps to reproduce:
Focus some application element located where the notifications usually pop up
and wait for a notification. The notification will then not blur so that you
won't see what you're writing/doing. The notification even won't blur on new
events eg keyboard input.

For example use Firefox in full screen, focus the the search plugin box
to enter some key words. (eg using Ctrl-K) Wait for a notification
(trigger one) and use the search plugin box. The notify message will
then impede you.

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Using Jaunty on my Thinkpad X60s, both Fn+F3 to show the battery status and
Fn+F12 do hibernate (suspend to disk) worked flawlessly. But on Karmic both
keys are ignored, though hibernate works fine using the user applet (the one
usually located in the upper panel in the right corner) or issuing "sudo

Both keys create an acpi event:

2009-09-27 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pm-utils

Both hooks 90chvt and 99video save the current virtual terminal in the variable
console by invoking fgconsole, afterwards they change to vt 63. Additionally
both use the same variable (console) to do this.
This results in 90chvt saving the X console (usually 7) to the variable and
changing to console 63, but then 99video is saving the then current console 63
in the same value and changes again to console 63 which has of course no
further effect.
But on restore the system won't change back to the X console as the correct
value has been replaced by 63.

This may be fixed easily by applying the attached patch to the file
/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/99video

2009-04-25 Thread Matthäus Brandl
I had the same problem on both of my systems, I upgraded both from Intrepid to
Jaunty Final.
The solution:
- remove the contents of ~/.cache/tracker and of ~./.local/share/tracker/data
- tracker-processes -r
- restart trackerd (in a shell with -v 2 to check)
- let the system index over night
seems to have worked for me, indexing stopped and the last tracker-indexer.log
shows a different error several hours ago...

[Bug 345177] Re: Brasero crashed when trying to copy-paste in an audio project

2009-03-20 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Before following your suggestions, I wanted to attach the output of "braser
--debug", but the funny thing is that I can't reproduce the error any more.
But I made an interesting discovery. It seems that you can't copy an element of
the brasero content list but you can paste to the content list. (the list which
shows you which (audio) files were already added to the project) Actually this
behaviour is somewhat logical, who wants to have the same track several times
on his disc? (I did)
So this time brasero tried to import "gpg -o - --export 428D7C01 | sudo apt-key
add -" on Ctrl-V because that was the last string I had copied. (from the
manuel you linked)
So it seems that it was whatever I had copied to my clipboard the other day
what crashed brasero.
My proposal is to check the clipboard content before pasting and adding it to
the project. (only files allowed)

Please let me know if I can help you in other ways with this bug...

[Bug 345912] [NEW] Brasero doesn't allow to copy

2009-03-20 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

When I want to make an exact (1:1) copy of a DVD, the corresponding windows
opens, but the "Copy" button will never be enabled. I only have one DVD drive
installed, and obviously I can't use the original disc as target for my copy.
(no free space) But if I change the target to "Image File" the "Copy" button
should be enabled. (or at least brasero should display a message why copying
isn't possible)
It would be fine though to be able to use the same drive for reading and -
after changing the media of course - writing as well.
I attached the output of "brasero --debug &> file" and will attach two
screenshots.

[Bug 320305] [NEW] Upper/lower case problems with extended latin characters

2009-01-22 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: amarok

On Amarok 1.4.10 (Intrepid) when I'm searching my collection by entering a
latin letter [a-z] it will yield all files containing that letter, not
regarding the case. (ie as well "Arctic Monkeys" as "Bad Religion", as well "A"
as "a") But trying this same thing with extended latin characters as German
umlauts or Spanish accented letters, the case does matter. For example entering
"Ä" will return "Die Ärzte" while entering "ä" doesn't, entering "Á" will yield
"Ángel" but not "ámame".
I'm sure this happens with more letters like French/Italian accents,
French/Portuguese/Catalan ç/Ç and so on... (A complicated and rare case might
be Icelandic characters as Ðð,Ææ,þÞ, not speaking about Asian characters)

[Bug 297213] Re: Intrepid: Missing hdaps_ec kernel module

2009-01-16 Thread Matthäus Brandl
@Dimitrios:
I thought about that as well, but the result is as follows:
$ sudo modprobe tp_smapi
Runs with return 0
$ dmesg | tail shows:
[22475.378515] tp_smapi 0.37 loading...
[22475.381479] tp_smapi successfully loaded (smapi_port=0xb2).
$ lsmod | grep smapi shows:
tp_smapi 29712 0
thinkpad_ec14736 1 tp_smapi

So it seems to be up and running nicely, but a test like
$ hdaps-gl yields
open: No such file or directory

I believe this is because tp_smapi for some reason doesn't publish the
sensor data at all or not at the right spot. (I forgot where it should
be, but I know that I looked for the information manually and didn't
find it either)

[Bug 181703] Re: Brasero does not recognize audio CD or blank CD-R

2008-11-24 Thread Matthäus Brandl
I experience the same problem on Intrepid (x86 32bit) with Brasero 0.8.2.
I installed version 0.8.3 from the source. That fixed the problem

[Bug 274510] Re: hdaps module doesn't load on some ThinkPad models

2008-11-12 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Same here on a X60s, hdaps won't load, hdaps_ec which loaded in Hardy is
missing and tp_smapi loads but doesn't yield acceleration information. (At
least neither I nor hdaps-gl can find them)
Maybe I'll file a bug that hdaps_ec is missing

[Bug 295393] [NEW] Intepid: Sensor can't be used after resume from hibernation

2008-11-07 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Public bug reported:

On my Thinkpad X60s running Intrepid I noticed that after resuming from
hibernation the fingerprint reader is no longer available. (sudo, gdm and
gksudo only asking for my password, not to swipe finger)
After a normal boot tf-tool correctly communicates with the sensor and
recognizes my finerprint. But after resuming from hibernation tf-tool yields
this message:
$ tf-tool --verify --verbose

ThinkFinger 0.3 (http://thinkfinger.sourceforge.net/)
Copyright (C) 2006, 2007 Timo Hoenig <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Running in verbose mode.

* Mode: verify
* Biometric identification record file: '/home/matthaeus/.thinkfinger.bir'

Initializing...Sending HELLO failed.

The Fingerprint Reader still shows up in lsusb and lshal.
dmesg shows an interesting entry connected with tf-tool:
[ 1030.834881] usb 4-2: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd tf-tool rqt 0 rq 9
len 0 ret -71

I'm using kernel 2.6.27-7-generic, libpam-thinkfinger is
0.3+r118-0ubuntu3 (affects 0.3+r118-0ubuntu4~ppa1 from the PPA by Jon
Oberheide as well (see #256429))

[Bug 255008] Re: Up arrow key mapped to Print [screen]

2008-10-31 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Actually I found the responsible key, at least in my case. It's the
Compiz plugin ezoom (Enhanced Desktop Zoom) which I actually don't use
anymore. I removed the key with gconftool-2 and almost everything works
fine. (Well would be nice to have the menu key as compose, but I guess
that's just some fdi configuration...

Well, thanks Muelli, mv'ing .gconf helps me as well, but having to
reconfigure everything is quite annoying. It would be great to find the
responsible key...

[Bug 192931] Re: modprobe nvidia fails with "FATAL: Could not open '/lib/modules/2.6.24-8-generic/volatile/nvidia.ko': No such file or directory"

2008-07-12 Thread Matthäus Brandl
Well thanks JoseStefan, you helped me a lot.
I was already fed up with recompiling the NVIDIA driver every time Ubuntu
installed a new kernel. Finally it will update automatically again...
Now I'd like to know why I added nv to
/etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common, I guess I red it somewhere when
my driver didn't work and messed everything up.

I don't think this is a bug but misconfiguration.
