[Bug 152460] grub install phase in 7.10 server install CD hangs
Public bug reported: Installing gutsy server (downloaded today, the 13th of October, ubuntu-7.10-rc-server-i386.iso) on an intel machine. Until I got to the Installing GRUB boot loader, the installation was a breeze. Now, its been stuck at the 50% point for the last 30 minutes. The text under the progress bar is 'Running grub-install (hd0)...'. The installation is stuck. I've tried ctrl-c as well as hitting ESC, but nothing happens. The first time I tried to install I made a silly mistake, and rebooted- but then I remember that I saw that my 40G disk (which contains the root and swap partitions) were labeled sda, not sdc. alright, found the problem. Booted in on a systemrescuecd I had lying around, and found that /boot/grub/menu.1st was set incorrectly- the root partition was set to (hd2,0) instead of (hd0,0). Seems it has something to do with that which I noticed when installing the first time, that the primary disk (what used to be called /dev/hda) was displayed as sdc instead of sda (thus resulting in hd2 instead of hd0). Im up and running now, all other references to the disk seem to be done via UUID, which (I've checked) is correct. QED?
