[Bug 1579268] Re: Mouse cursor is different inside graphical windows of snaps (snaps not using system theme)

2020-11-30 Thread Max Barry
Happens to me with Chromium and Discord snaps BUT ONLY if I start them
quickly after system startup. If I wait at least ~15 seconds, or quit &
restart the app, they display with normal correct system pointer/cursor.

[Bug 1859098] [NEW] Exiting Writer's Print Preview mode is slow in long documents

2020-01-09 Thread Max Barry
Public bug reported:

(Cross-posting from
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=129900 as problem
not reproducible on Windows.)

Compared to LibreOffice 5, exiting Print Preview in long documents on
LO6 is extremely slow.

With a 1,500 page document, for example, exiting Print Preview is
instant in LO5, but takes 5-6 seconds (!) in LO6.

To reproduce:

1. In LibreOffice 6 Writer, fill a document with text so that it
comprises at least a few hundred pages.

2. Enter Print Preview (e.g. File -> Print Preview).

3. Observe it takes a second or two (based on document length) to
display the Print Preview screen. This is similar to LibreOffice 5.

4. Press Escape to exit Print Preview mode.

5. Observe a significant delay (approx. 5-6 seconds for a 1,500 page
document) with CPU usage spiking before returning to normal view. There
is no such delay in LibreOffice 5.3.0.3 Writer.

I tend to flip back and forth between Normal View and Print Preview when
editing a document, and this new delay makes this very awkward.

[Bug 1848797] Re: After upgrading to 19.10, boot screen shows: "Error: symbol 'grub_file_filters' not found."

2019-11-07 Thread Max Barry
Got stuck on this today after upgrading from 19.04 -> 19.10. I do dual-
boot Windows. Also Ubuntu is on a 2-disk mdadm RAID array.

- I couldn't get boot-repair-disk to work: It wouldn't recognize the
internet connection. The LXTerminal it comes with was broken too and
didn't respond to keyboard input, so I couldn't fix it.

- I couldn't install boot-repair from within a live Ubuntu 19.10 USB: It
refused because of an unmet dependency for package boot-sav, even though
I'd added the recommended PPA.

- I did fix it by installing mdadm (sudo apt install mdadm) from within
the live Ubuntu USB, reassembling the RAID array (mdadm --assemble
/dev/md0 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1), mounting it, mounting all the other crap
you need to make chroot work, entering chroot, then running update-grub
and grub-install a few times on both disks (grub-install /dev/sda1,
grub-install /dev/sdb1).

[Bug 1570227] Re: Open Recent Items show as always empty in Gedit

2016-05-30 Thread Max Barry
Looks like a Ubuntu issue to me, since in that Gnome bug, upstream says
recent files have been moved to beneath the "Open \/" button on gedit's
taskbar:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=742425#c3

And indeed they are there! However, on Ubuntu 16.04, gedit also has a
"File" -> "Open Recent" menu, which is now non-functional (it's always
empty).

It's a bit confusing since "File" -> "Open Recent" has always been the
way to find recent files. It should either be removed or work.

[Bug 1385882] Re: Unable to mount iPad with IOS 8

2014-12-19 Thread Max Barry
Also occurs with iPhone 6 running iOS 8.1.2 (not just iPad).

After plugging in my phone, I get two icons in the sidebar: "'s
iPhone" and "iPhone." They look identical and offer the same right-click
menu choices ("Open", "", "Unlock from launcher"). Only the first
one works, though: when clicked, the file browser opens and displays the
contents of the phone, and the sidebar menu gains a new right-click
option "Unmount." The second icon ("iPhone") seems completely inert.

So the error doesn't seem to prevent the phone from being mounted, but
something's not quite right.

[Bug 739184] Re: [Libreoffice] Mnemonics do not work in Unity

2013-11-19 Thread Max Barry
Comment #79 works for me, thanks.

So right now the options for users are:

(a) Use the default Ubuntu install of LibreOffice: Your Alt+? keys don't
work, so you can't open the File menu by pressing Alt+F, etc.

(b) Remove "libreoffice-gtk": Your Alt+? keys work, but it looks very
different to every other application on your system, and has lots of
minor but disruptive bugs like being unable to maximize the window
fully.

(c) Remove the Ubuntu version of LibreOffice and install the one from
the libreoffice.org: Everything works, but it lacks some minor Unity
integration, as mentioned above.

[Bug 1069964] Re: Unable to mount Blank CD-R disc. Location is already mounted.

2013-11-12 Thread Max Barry
I have this problem with an iPhone.

When connecting my iPhone via USB for the first time after boot,
everything works fine.

But if I unplug the phone and plug it back in later, I get the effect
described here: a message box pops up saying "Unable to mount Max's
iPhone | Location is already mounted".

This message box cannot be closed. If I click "OK", literally nothing
happens. It's like it's not even a button. If I click the "X" in the
top-left corner, the button visibly depresses, but the message box
doesn't close.

There are no other effects; the iPhone always mounts normally and can be
navigated via the file manager.

On Ubuntu 13.10 with an iPhone 4S, but this has occurred for a very long
time, maybe since 12.10.

[Bug 739184] Re: [Libreoffice] Mnemonics do not work in Unity

2013-10-22 Thread Max Barry
I don't understand how this bug can persist throughout several Ubuntu
releases. It means Ubuntu doesn't have a functional office suite. You
have to choose between the Alt key or the windowing: only one will work.
(Without libreoffice-gtk, you can't maximize properly.) Is that not seen
as a major issue?

[Bug 739184] Re: [Libreoffice] Mnemonics do not work in Unity

2013-04-15 Thread Max Barry
The bug description says, "This might be solved if bug #1064962 is
solved." However, bug #1064962 is now fixed in 13.04 beta, but this
problem remains.

Also, as mentioned in earlier comments, the workaround mentioned in the
bug description (remove "libreoffice-gtk") is no longer really viable in
13.04.

So it's quite the problem in Raring.

LibreOffice Version 4.0.2.2 (Build ID: 400m0(Build:2)).

[Bug 1071529] [NEW] Version bump request to 2.0.6+

2012-10-25 Thread Max Barry
Public bug reported:

As per:

mod_perl 2.0.6 has been out since April 24, 2012 and 2.0.7 since June 5,

They include significant bug fixes, including a fix for a race condition
that makes mod_perl unreliable on Ubuntu Server (see: http://www

[Bug 699761] Re: Realtek RTL8111/8168B REV 6 PCI-E NIC bad performance

2012-01-15 Thread Max Barry
There are posts all over the net from linux users with RTL8111/8168B
experiencing poor network performance (usually lots of dropped packets).
The best solution seems to be to blacklist the r8169 driver and use the
r8168 driver instead.

E.g. see:

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=80757

or

http://www.foxhop.net/realtek-dropping-packets-on-linux-ubuntu-and-

And lots of Ubuntu bugs:

I experienced the problem with a new motherboard using onboard LAN.
Symptoms were very poor network performance, lots of dropped packets
revealed by 'ifconfig', 'dmesg' reporting lots of 'link up', 'link down'
messages, and occasionally errors like:

[Bug 331369] Re: regression vs. notification-daemon: positioning when multiple screens are available

2011-12-29 Thread Max Barry
The multihead-mode "focus-follow" fix mentioned earlier DOES work for
me, but in Ubuntu11.10 I have to use dconf-editor, not gconf-editor
(which is obsolete now, right?).

This makes notifications appear on whichever screen has focus (which is
very handy, I've found). It's working for me with twinview configured
via nvidia-settings.

Before: notifications always appeared on the right-hand monitor, which
was sub-optimal because I'm not usually looking at it.

Fix: "dconf--editor", navigate to apps -> notify-osd, change "multihead-
mode" to "focus-follow". No need to log out or restart anything.

Test:
notify-send --icon=gtk-add "Test notification" "This is a test message"

[Bug 737615] Re: can't save changes in "edit connections"

2011-07-10 Thread Max Barry
I encountered this problem and figured out that it's a misleading UI.
After entering IPs for Address, Netmask, and Gateway, I clicked the
"Add" button, thinking this would store it. I then went on to fill out
"DNS servers" etc. I then encountered the grayed-out "Save" button, with
seemingly no way to save these changes.

(Incidentally, the "Available to all users" box was also unchecked and
grayed out.)

I then realized that clicking "Add" did not, like I had assumed, add the
data I'd just entered, but instead opened up a new line, and that the
reason the "Save" button is grayed out is because the new line does not
contain any valid data. Selecting the accidental new line and clicking
"Delete" restored the "Save" button to an active, clickable state.

The inadvertent new line is easy to overlook because it's completely
blank, with its shaded background the only thing to suggest there's
anything there.

[Bug 441828] Re: System Monitor ignores close request and uses 100% of one core

2011-05-31 Thread Max Barry
Same here when running gnome-system-monitor with iPhone 3 connected via
USB.

Some observations:

1. As noted by other posters, I get tons of output from "dbus-monitor
--session"

2. As mentioned above, when starting gnome-system-monitor, at first the
only output on the command-line is: "** (gnome-system-monitor:6765):
WARNING **: SELinux was found but is not enabled."

3. While experiencing the problem, the command-line that I started
gnome-system-monitor from received these two messages thousands of
times:

(gnome-system-monitor:6582): GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING **: cannot
add match rule
'type='signal',interface='org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor',sender='org.gtk.Private.GPhoto2VolumeMonitor',':
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.LimitsExceeded: Connection ":1.236" is not
allowed to add more match rules (increase limits in configuration file
if required)

(gnome-system-monitor:6582): GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING **: cannot
add match rule
'type='signal',interface='org.freedesktop.DBus',member='NameOwnerChanged',arg0='org.gtk.Private.GPhoto2VolumeMonitor'':
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.LimitsExceeded: Connection ":1.236" is not
allowed to add more match rules (increase limits in configuration file
if required)

4. Usually, after I plug in my iPhone, my system automatically mounts
both "Max's iPhone" and "Documents on Max's iPhone". However, when I
unplugged the iPhone, restart gnome-system-monitor, and plug the phone
back in, only the main device is auto-mounted, not "Documents".

5. After removing and replugging the phone, I was not able to reproduce
the problem during that login session. It only happened if the phone was
already plugged in before I logged in.

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04.

[Bug 713874] [NEW] grub misinterprets md/raid device

2011-02-05 Thread Max Barry
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

I have a RAID5 mdadm array on /dev/md0. It is fully functional but I
cannot boot from it because grub detects it as "/dev/md/0" (with an
extra slash). Running "update-grub", for example, produces a grub.cfg
with the lines "set root='(md/0)'". Upon rebooting, grub reports "error:
file not found" and drops into a rescue shell.

Some (or all) disks in this array were previously used in a RAID array
using mdadm metadata version 0.90. Now, however, they are using version
1.20. Since mdadm puts metadata v1.20 in a different location, I wonder
if perhaps there's a ghost of the old 0.90 metadata hanging around,
which is confusing grub.

[Bug 610085] Re: Upstart does not successfully start mysql on boot

2010-07-27 Thread Max Barry
Experienced this problem following a simple upgrade of a few packages
including mysql (see below). Afterward mysql did not start on boot.

I tried appending "IFACE=lo" to "net-device-up" as recommended above,
but this made no difference. To fix I had to remove the line "and
runlevel[2345]".

Not sure why this makes any difference as "runlevel" returns "N 2". But
now mysql starts on boot.

My fix:

Confirming this, I did the same thing independently a few weeks ago when
I noticed mysql was stopping before mythtv-backend, which then produced
errors. Haven't had a problem since.

I also tweaked my 'start' line. It looks like this:

start on (local-filesystems and net-device-up IFACE=lo and started mysql)
stop on (starting shutdown or stopping mysql)

This is on Mythbuntu 10.04.

[Bug 382020] Re: f-spot will no longer copy photos from camera

2009-08-22 Thread Max Barry
I think I have this issue. When attempting to import from my camera, in
"Transferring Pictures" dialog:

file:///home/max/doc/pics/Snaps/New/img_.jpg
System.IO.FileNotFoundException:

 at FSpot.CameraFileSelectionDialog.SaveFile (Int32 index) [0x0]
 at FSpot.CameraFileSelectionDialog.Download () [0x0]

Error transferring file

[Retry] [Skip] [Cancel]

This seems to pop up once for every .AVI file in the batch to be
transferred (it does not occur when transferring image files). The
dialog box first displays a string like "Transferring mvi_43404-0.avi",
followed by the error. If I select "Skip," f-spot continues to import
files, but the next time it reaches an AVI file, it will once again
complain about img_.jpg being missing.

The missing file referenced ("img_.jpg") does not exist on my drive.

If I create the file it's looking for (e.g. "touch
/home/max/doc/pics/Snaps/New/img_.jpg"), it instead throws up an
error that looks the same but complains about a different file being
missing (e.g. "System.IO.FileNotFoundException:
file:///home/max/doc/pics/Snaps/New/img_2223.jpg").

I may well have moved/renamed a directory at some point, as I do have a
similarly named file in a subdirectory
(/home/max/doc/pics/Snaps/New/2008-03-17--08.44.00/IMG_.JPG).

The AVI files do actually seem to transfer to the disk successfully.
That is, the error seems to occur immediately AFTER each AVI file is
transferred.

from a valgrind run. NetworkManager quickly consumed all available CPU
and began eating memory; I immediately hit Ctrl-C.

Output doesn't look very useful, unfortunately, but here it is.

[Bug 147080] Re: do-release-upgrade should make disabling third party repositories optional

2009-01-05 Thread Max Barry
Workaround in comment 4 worked great for me, thanks.

I was upgrading a remote machine on a bandwidth-capped connection; this
allowed me to use a local unmetered mirror.

[Bug 284507] Re: error monitoring wired ethernet link state

2008-12-18 Thread Max Barry
This is probably not a duplicate of #203016, because:

1. The other bug reports a slow memory leak, around 4MB per hour.
Reporters here experience very rapid RAM consumption. For me,
NetworkManager consumes all 2GB of RAM within minutes.

2. The other bug is not associated with high CPU usage. (One reporter
shows NetworkManager using 1% of CPU while experiencing the problem.)
Reporters here experience NetworkManager consuming all available CPU.

3. Reporters here have their syslog spammed with: " NetworkManager:
  nm_error_monitoring_device_link_state(): error monitoring wired
ethernet link state: error occurred while waiting for data on socket".
This is not associated with the other bug, with the exception of two
reporters who, as detailed below, I believe have posted in the wrong
bug.

4. With one exception, reporters here all have a Texas Instruments ACX
wireless network card. None of the reporters in #203016 have this card,
except for the two mentioned above.

5. Reporters here complain of the problem even after a fix was released
for #203016.

The two reports of high CPU usage, rapid RAM consumption, and/or
"nm_error_monitoring_device_link_state" error messages in bug #203016
are also the only two owners of Texas Instruments ACX wireless cards.
They are also the last two reports: i.e. they experience problems later
than everybody else. They probably belong in this bug, not that one.

I also have a Texas Instruments ACX 111 wireless chipset. NetworkManager
consumes 100% CPU and eats RAM, forcing me to kill it, while filling
syslog with the "error monitoring wired ethernet link state" message.

$ tail /var/log/daemon.log
Dec 19 10:46:18 eve NetworkManager:
nm_error_monitoring_device_link_state(): error monitoring wired ethernet link
state: error occurred while waiting for data on socket
Dec 19 10:46:37 eve last message repeated 683113 times
