Its just matter of fixing X code.

[Bug 50692]

2013-01-22 Thread Maxim Levitsky
Isn't it a solution just to fix XI2 to pass through extended codes?
So every TV viewer application, could just register for XI2 inputs and thats
all.
That would at least make IR remote support on par with Windows, where also just
few keys on the MCE remote work everywhere, but all keys work in media center.

[Bug 812394] Re: Disable hibernate option by default

2012-03-16 Thread Maxim Levitsky
True, but you are just keeping of harming already broken system.
There is *lot* of bugs.
I already enabled hibernation, I am smart enough to Google and find what is
going on eventually.
Its just stinks when you just remove/disable more and more options instead on
focusing on usability.

Usability? Tell me please how I can take few images and stitch them together in
Gimp?
Even in MS paint its easy.

Ubuntu is full of glaring usability problems, I don't even complain about, and
all developers of it are busy removing features.
And KDE is even worse (but at least it has the features).

I understnd very well that ubuntu and all free software it distrubutes is free,
and I didn't yet paid a dime for using it.
So I never would complain about lack of some feature, etc.
But when you remove already existing features, make already good product worse,
I think I do have right to complain.
Besides I did contribute a bit by writing few kernel drivers, fixing a bunch of
bugs (including many bugs that caused unreliable suspend on my system... the
irony...)

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.22/+bug/160763

Good, keep up the good work, I already mostly use Win7.

[Bug 763230] Re: No option to minimize windows from the Unity panel (e.g. right-click menu)

2011-05-21 Thread Maxim Levitsky
@conorsulli. Sorry for trolling again, but really you didn't understand
that yet?

If this was done as you suggested, Ubuntu developers might be in deep
trouble because then they might not be able to complete their annual
plan of loosing a predefined amount of users, and that is a disaster.
They might even be fired for that.

I know that this is trolling, but I really am frustrated user of Ubuntu that
used it for 4 years, and I lost about a full-time week adopting to KDE. But now
its all behind me.
I am studying now and that time is very important to me.

[Bug 132417] Re: evince doesn't display the correct font

2011-05-21 Thread Maxim Levitsky
Its very simple actually.
Fontconfig is just a mess.
It can happly pick up a preffered that misses glyphs that
document needs.

So to fix the '>=' issue I removed the 'ttf-symbol-replacement' font
which apparently isn't such a correct symbol replacement.

After that, fontconfig picked up as the Symbol font the
'/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/Symbol.pfb'

Which belongs to

maxim@maxim-laptop:~$ sudo dpkg -S /usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/Symbol.pfb
xfonts-mathml: /usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/Symbol.pfb

Hopefully, if you have that package installed the same will happen and
the <= glyph will render normally again.

Now about some homeworks I had that were in hebrew, and were missing most
Hebrew fonts
(like the one I attached here)

These files were using the Nimbus Roman No9 L to render most fonts and
its very bad Times replacement, becuse it misses Hebrew glyphs.

I hoped to install MS fonts from 'ttf-mscorefonts-installer', but If you
installed them in hope that you will get correct fonts, font-config won't pick
these fonts.
There is a forest of setting files in /etc/fonts that make it select anything
but not these fonts,

I just back-uped and removed the /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/ which
contain that dreadful 'Nimbus Roman No9 L' font that replaces Times New
Roman, and probably few more fonts and installed 'ttf-mscorefonts-
installer' and now all my docs show up correctly (also with ttf-symbol-
replacement, and 'Symbol' isn't mapped to MS font, but the one I told
above seems to work fine)

The point it that these replacements don't contain nearly as much glyphs
as needed unlike MS fonts and fonconfig isn't smart enough to pick _any_
font that has these glyphs. I am not picky about fonts, I just need to
be able to read the document, in this case in Hebrew.

Instead of MS fonts, you can use the Dejavu fonts at least which are installed,
and once again fontconfig doesn't pick them.
These fonts have good Unicode coverage, but still don't render everything
correctly, in that old homework.
Once again to let these fonts to be used you need to apply some magic to
/etc/fonts.
(They seems to be used if I just remove the /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/ and
the MS fonts)

@sab:

"Why not use the behaviour like in gnome2 and windows (and probably many other
windowmanagers);
Clicking on an inactive app, activates it, and clicking on an active app

Because that has a potential of not loosing some users, and thats bad.
BTW, I finally took the advice I am constantly given every time I complain

[Bug 238208] Re: Need MemoryStick driver Ricoh R5C592 (part of R5C832/822chipset)

2011-05-03 Thread Maxim Levitsky
I got the driver merged in 2.6.39, so it will appear in next ubuntu version.
(That is minus support for old legacy memorysticks, that while works perfectly,
isn't merged because kernel developers pick on minor details of my driver, and
I have no time to redone them)

[Bug 616443] Re: gnome-power-manager panel menu has redundant information (remaining time twice) when on battery

2011-04-22 Thread Maxim Levitsky
Ok, I got the message.
Unless you fix it yourself, nobody will, although for developer its much easier
to fix because he knows the code.
Maybe I should have reported that upstream.
Anyway, here the patch.

Please spare me from doing the administrative work such as correcting
something in changelog, etc.

It tuns out that libupower-glib adds the battery to an array, but gpm
adds it there too.

10.10 contains 2.6.35, and it since it still uses CONFIG_MMC_RICOH_MMC,
none of my code affects the SD portion.

Which kernel did work?
Did you try with different SD card?

Could you post kernel log?

[Bug 728803] Re: Ubuntu theme switches from partially broken to gnome default on VirtualBox guest

2011-03-31 Thread Maxim Levitsky
BTW, Accidentally I found a clue about that bug.
It seems that gnome-settings daemon that serves gdm, interferes with user's
gnome-settings-daemon.

If I ssh in, and do 'sudo killall -9 gnome-settings-daemon', while log-in
screen is presented, the system comes up normally.
As a workaround I even added this to /etc/X11/Xsession.d.
(However due to the fact that shell script from the above folder runs as the
users and gnome-settings-daemon from gdm runs as 'gdm' user, I had to use sudo
in that screen, but since sudo asks for a password, I did a gross-horror
securety hack, by making sudo not ask for a password - for VM for now, it
shouldn't matter.

[Bug 728803] Re: Ubuntu theme switches from partially broken to gnome default on VirtualBox guest

2011-03-18 Thread Maxim Levitsky
Yep, have exactly same issue.

As I suspected from point 0, this is the gnome-settings daemon crash
(rather hang more correctly).

To 'fix' the problem temporarily I did:

# the SIGKILL is importaint, because the program seems to be hung completely
and ignores SIGTERM
killall -9 gnome-settings-daemon
gnome-settings-daemon.

#At that point panel looks ok, but nautilus not, so
#Then restart nautilus as it seems not to pick the change
killall nautilus

I bet that this is a race condition just happened to be exposed by slow
virtual CPU.

[Bug 647218] [NEW] Maveric: when streaming sound over network the progress bar doesn't update

2010-09-24 Thread Maxim Levitsky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Steps to reproduce:

Connect a system to remote PA.
Open a sound file in totem or rhythmbox, and see that progress indicator stays
at 00:00.
Sound does play though, and it is possible to seek, but then progress indicator
still stands at new location.
Of course pause/play resets the sound to start...

[Bug 433654] Re: Only one user gets sound with privilege "Use audio devices"

2010-09-24 Thread Maxim Levitsky
I updated to maveric, and despite both users not being in the audio
group, I see that problem.

** Description changed:

Sound does not work for different users if they belong to the audio
  group.

A workaround is to remove the users from the audio group. With this
however simply managing individual device access based on standard group
  memberships stops working (regression).

Consolekit (like any kit handling device permissions/privilege
escalation) needs to enable audio only for users belonging to audio
group (when they are at the console), and leave it disabled for users
  not in the audio group.
+
+ Note that in 10.10, even this workaround doesn't work.

  Steps to reproduce the bugs:

  1. Create 2 new users, user1 and user2 (to be sure you use Karmic default
settings).
  2. Restart. Login as one user, then double click on
/usr/share/example-content/Aesop'\''s_Fables,_Volume_1_(Fable_1)_-_The_Fox_and_The_Grapes.spx
  3. Switch to second user. The sound from the first user is still playing
uninterrupted, even at gdm stage.
  2. As the second user, double click on
/usr/share/example-content/Ubuntu_Free_Culture_Showcase/SpiritOfUbuntu.ogv
while the first user audio is still not finished.

Result: First user prevent any sound to be played as second user (with
Totem, the video even doesn't start, but with other applications you can
sometimes get the video but no audio). When the first user audio
finishes to play, audio can be played as user2, but that would block
audio for user1 if you switch back to its session.

Expected behavior: like in Jaunty and previous releases, sound from one
user should stop playing when another session is active. In Jaunty and
earlier, even VT had sound from one user when logged as this user, and
from the other when logged as him.

Some audio applications on one session also prevent any sound to be
played for the other user session even when they have nothing to play.

(Note: this is not a multi-seat setup, but a single seat computer with
multiple user accounts.
  See attached screenshots for details).

Other example: a first user has a session open, playing sound with Amarok
(paused) on a Gnome desktop.
The second user chose "Switch user" in FUSA, then login. The new session
doesn't have any sound, and the "Sound Preferences" window only lists "Dummy
Output - Stereo" in the Output tab (Screenshot 1). In the hardware tab, nothing
appears (Screenshot 2).

When the first user closes Amarok, the second user now has the hardware
showing in the Hardware tab (Screenshot 3) but no sound, since the
Profile is "Analog Stereo Duplex" (should be Analog Stereo Output").
When the user changes it to the right Profile, sounds works (see also
Screenshot 4, compared to Screenshot 1 when no sound was played).

The second user can now play sound, for example a flash video.

Now though, the first user doesn't have any sound when coming back to
its session (or more exactly, the only sound he can hear is the flash
video being played in the second user's session, even though the users
have switched. Any audio application the first user opens shows in Sound
preferences>Applications, but doesn't output any sound, and moving the
application individual sound sliders only affect the sound being played
  in session 2.

All that was handled properly in Jaunty and previous Ubuntu releases.

+ The problem is the CDT is missing from ubuntu packages for long time.
+ It was possible in 10.04 to add it through eclipse's built-it update
facility, and it would work very well.
+ Now in 10.10 this doesn't work probably due to version mismatch.

[Bug 619816] Re: Battery status line too long

2010-09-24 Thread Maxim Levitsky
Note that I have *one* battery, and in fact g-p-m statistic dialog is right
about that.
Its the g-p-m icon that shows the battery twice.
That happens if I hotplug the battery.

[Bug 619816] Re: Battery status line too long

2010-09-23 Thread Maxim Levitsky
To be honest, I didn't report these bugs. Sorry.
I usually search before I fill the bugreports to be sure I don't fill a
duplicate.

This bugreport deals with missing percentage on g-p-m icon
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/539912

And this is bugreport about 'estimating' never ending message.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/633552

So, indeed I didn't report any of these bugs.

Yes, like I said I reported them all:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/144830
This bug is mostly fixed in 10.04, but only problem remaining is that
g-p-m doesn't update its properies window when I plug batter after
login.
Granted its not possible currently to tell if system has battery before
its plugged, but after it is g-p-m should update the properties window.
I discussed that on LKML, and more or less nothing came out of that.
We ended up with the decision that kernel need to present somehow a flag
to userspace that battery bay exists, but no battery present.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/496221
This bug deals with too low hibernate thresholds.
Its piece of cake to fix. All its needed is to make system hibernate as
soon as battery hits 5% (or to be safe 10%).
(And let user override that to lower value if user really fells like he
wants to).
Besides, it happened to me that due to natural LiION decay, battery
might die on as high as 10% percent. (but on next boot, the total amount
of energy it can store is reduced, so it doesn't happen again.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/616443
10.10 bug, maybe in my case a bit different.
I just see the battery status twice, in exact same way.
I am sure that some code adds it twice to indicator-applet.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-session/+bug/645370
This deals with forced screensaver on suspend.
To be honest, I didn't report that bug for long time, and today while
searching though g-p-m bugs I found this new report.

As a side note I also seen many more g-p-m issues, but they mostly are
kernel related unlike mine.

Also just a small note about the fact that due to variate of ways
brightness can be set from hardware keys, g-p-m often doesn't let
keyboard set the bightness (usually because it is set i hardware or
kernel acpi 'video' driver. As a result of this users with remote
controls that have brightness up/down keys can't use them.

I think these are all the bugs.

Best regards,
Maxim Levitsky

[Bug 619816] Re: Battery status line too long

2010-09-23 Thread Maxim Levitsky
Sorry about that, I was really frustrated.

Here g-p-m is very broken (and it was working very well in 10.04),
It:

10.10 regressions:

* This one.

* shows battery status twice on battery hotplug, and as soon as I remove the
battery, it shows the status once,
so it never realizes battery is removed. Somewhere battery is added twice.
Note that I don't have /proc and sysfs interfaces in kernel config. I also
tested this with ubuntu's kernel (2.6.35-generic...)
Kernel has only /sys battery interface.

* Shows 'estimating' all the time AC is plugged and battery is charging.

Older regressions:

* Its gconf settings for lock on suspend (which I disable, because I
don't want screensaver nor black screen (pun intended) on resume are
ingnored. the indicator-session now just always locks the screen.

* Doesn't show battery percentage on discharge (10.4 addition, I swallowed it
I'll say...)
* Doesn't hibernate the system on empty battery because the threshold (which is
specified in time which is not accurate) is too low (its like 2 minutes). I
worked that around by editing gconf keys.
* Doesn't allow to configure 'on battery' settings if battery wasn't plugged
before the log-in.

[Bug 619816] Re: Battery status line too long

2010-09-23 Thread Maxim Levitsky
I disagree this this is fixed. I'll say that new format is broken.
Instead of old intuitive message of

Laptop battery 1 hour 15 minutes left we get
Laptop battery 1:15 left.
What is that? Hours? Minutes?

Also g-p-m settings dialog is littered with these short formattings.

Like:
Put display to sleep when inactive for 0:05. WTF?

It was:

Put display to sleep when inactive for 5 minutes.

What is better?

Fixed, but you will need to assign the key an application.
Use keyboard shotcuts.
Same applies to many keys below.

Not my fault unfortunately. gnome-power-manger really assumes you press these

This key works.
I don't think you could assign it to Application menu easily.
Probably would need to assign it some shell script with dbus instructions.
Anyway, its gnome limitation.

Now fixed, but again, assign it in keyboard shortcuts.
Understand that now these keys send different keycodes, that are much more
generic.
So you need to assign them. Or ask X devs to fix the 248 limit.

ubuntu xserver carries a patch (for very long time I'll say, because its second
time I face this, I just forgot), that workarounds that problem
(121_only_switch_vt_when_active.diff)

I understand carrying patches when you choose stable version and cherry
picked changes from latest tree, or you put a patch and soon submit it,
but this is ridiculous.

Btw, that 'seamless' boot patches (-bg none) aren't upstream too, and
intel driver changed so much that it easier to study the whole thing
that to try and apply it

Folks, really send patches upstream, its for the common good.

[Bug 396226] Re: GDM logs out after some minutes of typing on the keyboard

2010-09-11 Thread Maxim Levitsky
Actually this workaround doesn't work on my desktop for some strange reason.
X starts on vt1, of course hangs due to fight with plymouth,
The /var/run/gdm/firstserver.stamp exists, and I tested that x doesn't crash
first time or so.
Removing it makes X start on vt7, on next boot everything is back
/var/run is mounted as tmpfs, and I did check that it doesn't contain
/var/run/gdm/firstserver.stamp if booted into 'single' mode

However I will add a compat code there.

[Bug 501923] Re: ENE CIR Receiver chip don't work

2010-09-07 Thread Maxim Levitsky
This is attempt to give (copy me) instructions on how to install the
driver.

First remove the existing lirc drivers:
$ rm
/lib/modules/2.6.32-24-generic/kernel/ubuntu/lirc/lirc_ene0100/lirc_ene0100.ko
$ rm /lib/modules/2.6.32-24-generic/kernel/ubuntu/lirc/lirc_ene0100/lirc_dev.ko

Now update the driver cache:
$ sudo depmod -a

now verify that lirc drivers don't exist:

$ modinfo lirc_ene0100
ERROR: modinfo: could not find module lirc_ene0100
$ modinfo lirc_dev
ERROR: modinfo: could not find module lirc_dev

Now you download it:
$ git clone git://gitorious.org/ene-cir/ene-cir.git

You didn't noticed that, but that creates a folder with name ene-cir
Therefore you need to enter it:
$ cd ene-cir/

Now compile it
$ make

Install:

$ sudo make install

Load the driver:
$ ./misc/ene_test
ENE driver reloaded

Now your remote should work. no need to start lirc.

If you want to use lirc yet, copy the
./misc/70-disable-ir-decoding.rules to /etc/udev/rules.d/

$ sudo cp ./misc/70-disable-ir-decoding.rules /etc/udev/rules.d/

Then exectute the ene_test again, and verify that only lirc installed.
In other words this:

$ ./misc/ene_test
ENE driver reloaded

$ cat /sys/class/rc/rc0/protocols
rc-5 nec rc-6 jvc sony [lirc]

Please contact me via IRC, if you can now, I guide you how to install.
