[Bug 812394] Re: Disable hibernate option by default
True, but you are just keeping of harming already broken system. There is *lot* of bugs. I already enabled hibernation, I am smart enough to Google and find what is going on eventually. Its just stinks when you just remove/disable more and more options instead on focusing on usability. Usability? Tell me please how I can take few images and stitch them together in Gimp? Even in MS paint its easy. Ubuntu is full of glaring usability problems, I don't even complain about, and all developers of it are busy removing features. And KDE is even worse (but at least it has the features). I understnd very well that ubuntu and all free software it distrubutes is free, and I didn't yet paid a dime for using it. So I never would complain about lack of some feature, etc. But when you remove already existing features, make already good product worse, I think I do have right to complain. [Bug 132417] Re: evince doesn't display the correct font
Its very simple actually. Fontconfig is just a mess. It can happly pick up a preffered that misses glyphs that document needs. So to fix the '>=' issue I removed the 'ttf-symbol-replacement' font which apparently isn't such a correct symbol replacement. After that, fontconfig picked up as the Symbol font the '/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/Symbol.pfb' Which belongs to maxim@maxim-laptop:~$ sudo dpkg -S /usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/Symbol.pfb xfonts-mathml: /usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/Symbol.pfb Hopefully, if you have that package installed the same will happen and the <= glyph will render normally again. Now about some homeworks I had that were in hebrew, and were missing most Hebrew fonts (like the one I attached here) These files were using the Nimbus Roman No9 L to render most fonts and its very bad Times replacement, becuse it misses Hebrew glyphs. I hoped to install MS fonts from 'ttf-mscorefonts-installer', but If you installed them in hope that you will get correct fonts, font-config won't pick these fonts. There is a forest of setting files in /etc/fonts that make it select anything but not these fonts, I just back-uped and removed the /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/ which contain that dreadful 'Nimbus Roman No9 L' font that replaces Times New Roman, and probably few more fonts and installed 'ttf-mscorefonts- installer' and now all my docs show up correctly (also with ttf-symbol- replacement, and 'Symbol' isn't mapped to MS font, but the one I told above seems to work fine) The point it that these replacements don't contain nearly as much glyphs as needed unlike MS fonts and fonconfig isn't smart enough to pick _any_ font that has these glyphs. I am not picky about fonts, I just need to be able to read the document, in this case in Hebrew. Instead of MS fonts, you can use the Dejavu fonts at least which are installed, and once again fontconfig doesn't pick them. These fonts have good Unicode coverage, but still don't render everything correctly, in that old homework. Once again to let these fonts to be used you need to apply some magic to /etc/fonts. (They seems to be used if I just remove the /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/ and the MS fonts) ** Changed in: poppler (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Invalid ** Also affects: fontconfig (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/132417 Title: evince doesn't display the correct font -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

BTW, Accidentally I found a clue about that bug. It seems that gnome-settings daemon that serves gdm, interferes with user's gnome-settings-daemon. If I ssh in, and do 'sudo killall -9 gnome-settings-daemon', while log-in screen is presented, the system comes up normally. As a workaround I even added this to /etc/X11/Xsession.d. (However due to the fact that shell script from the above folder runs as the users and gnome-settings-daemon from gdm runs as 'gdm' user, I had to use sudo in that screen, but since sudo asks for a password, I did a gross-horror securety hack, by making sudo not ask for a password - for VM for now, it shouldn't matter. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/728803 Title: Ubuntu theme switches from partially broken to gnome default on VirtualBox guest -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Yep, have exactly same issue. As I suspected from point 0, this is the gnome-settings daemon crash (rather hang more correctly). [Bug 433654] Re: Only one user gets sound with privilege "Use audio devices"
I updated to maveric, and despite both users not being in the audio group, I see that problem. ** Description changed: Sound does not work for different users if they belong to the audio group. A workaround is to remove the users from the audio group. With this however simply managing individual device access based on standard group memberships stops working (regression). Consolekit (like any kit handling device permissions/privilege escalation) needs to enable audio only for users belonging to audio group (when they are at the console), and leave it disabled for users not in the audio group. + + Note that in 10.10, even this workaround doesn't work. Steps to reproduce the bugs: 1. Create 2 new users, user1 and user2 (to be sure you use Karmic default settings). 2. Restart. Login as one user, then double click on /usr/share/example-content/Aesop'\''s_Fables,_Volume_1_(Fable_1)_-_The_Fox_and_The_Grapes.spx 3. Switch to second user. The sound from the first user is still playing uninterrupted, even at gdm stage. 2. As the second user, double click on /usr/share/example-content/Ubuntu_Free_Culture_Showcase/SpiritOfUbuntu.ogv while the first user audio is still not finished. Result: First user prevent any sound to be played as second user (with Totem, the video even doesn't start, but with other applications you can sometimes get the video but no audio). When the first user audio finishes to play, audio can be played as user2, but that would block audio for user1 if you switch back to its session. Expected behavior: like in Jaunty and previous releases, sound from one user should stop playing when another session is active. In Jaunty and earlier, even VT had sound from one user when logged as this user, and from the other when logged as him. Some audio applications on one session also prevent any sound to be played for the other user session even when they have nothing to play. (Note: this is not a multi-seat setup, but a single seat computer with multiple user accounts. See attached screenshots for details). Other example: a first user has a session open, playing sound with Amarok (paused) on a Gnome desktop. The second user chose "Switch user" in FUSA, then login. The new session doesn't have any sound, and the "Sound Preferences" window only lists "Dummy Output - Stereo" in the Output tab (Screenshot 1). In the hardware tab, nothing appears (Screenshot 2). When the first user closes Amarok, the second user now has the hardware showing in the Hardware tab (Screenshot 3) but no sound, since the Profile is "Analog Stereo Duplex" (should be Analog Stereo Output"). When the user changes it to the right Profile, sounds works (see also Screenshot 4, compared to Screenshot 1 when no sound was played). The second user can now play sound, for example a flash video. Now though, the first user doesn't have any sound when coming back to its session (or more exactly, the only sound he can hear is the flash video being played in the second user's session, even though the users have switched. Any audio application the first user opens shows in Sound preferences>Applications, but doesn't output any sound, and moving the application individual sound sliders only affect the sound being played in session 2. All that was handled properly in Jaunty and previous Ubuntu releases. Granted its not possible currently to tell if system has battery before its plugged, but after it is g-p-m should update the properties window. I discussed that on LKML, and more or less nothing came out of that. Its piece of cake to fix. All its needed is to make system hibernate as soon as battery hits 5% (or to be safe 10%). (And let user override that to lower value if user really fells like he wants to). Besides, it happened to me that due to natural LiION decay, battery might die on as high as 10% percent. To be honest, I didn't report that bug for long time, and today while searching though g-p-m bugs I found this new report. As a side note I also seen many more g-p-m issues, but they mostly are kernel related unlike mine. Also just a small note about the fact that due to variate of ways brightness can be set from hardware keys, g-p-m often doesn't let keyboard set the bightness (usually because it is set i hardware or kernel acpi 'video' driver. Sorry about that, I was really frustrated. Here g-p-m is very broken (and it was working very well in 10.04), It: 10.10 regressions: * This one. * shows battery status twice on battery hotplug, and as soon as I remove the battery, it shows the status once, so it never realizes battery is removed. Somewhere battery is added twice. Note that I don't have /proc and sysfs interfaces in kernel config. I also tested this with ubuntu's kernel (2.6.35-generic...) Kernel has only /sys battery interface. * Shows 'estimating' all the time AC is plugged and battery is charging. Older regressions: * Its gconf settings for lock on suspend (which I disable, because I don't want screensaver nor black screen (pun intended) on resume are ingnored. the indicator-session now just always locks the screen. * Doesn't show battery percentage on discharge (10.4 addition, I swallowed it I'll say...) * Doesn't hibernate the system on empty battery because the threshold (which is specified in time which is not accurate) is too low (its like 2 minutes). I worked that around by editing gconf keys. * Doesn't allow to configure 'on battery' settings if battery wasn't plugged before the log-in. -- Battery status line too long https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/619816 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 396226] Re: GDM logs out after some minutes of typing on the keyboard
Boy, how ugly things could get. I was wrong about X not crashing. It indeed crashes once. I have here a custom built from latest git trees x server, and it is of course ubuntu hack free... So it turns out that plymouth (or whatever the name is) makes X crash, and ubuntu xserver carries a patch (for very long time I'll say, because its second time I face this, I just forgot), that workarounds that problem (121_only_switch_vt_when_active.diff) I understand carrying patches when you choose stable version and cherry picked changes from latest tree, or you put a patch and soon submit it, but this is ridiculous. Btw, that 'seamless' boot patches (-bg none) aren't upstream too, and intel driver changed so much that it easier to study the whole thing that to try and apply it Folks, really send patches upstream, its for the common good. -- GDM logs out after some minutes of typing on the keyboard https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/396226 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 396226] Re: GDM logs out after some minutes of typing on the keyboard
Actually this workaround doesn't work on my desktop for some strange reason. X starts on vt1, of course hangs due to fight with plymouth, The /var/run/gdm/firstserver.stamp exists, and I tested that x doesn't crash first time or so. Removing it makes X start on vt7, on next boot everything is back /var/run is mounted as tmpfs, and I did check that it doesn't contain /var/run/gdm/firstserver.stamp if booted into 'single' mode -- GDM logs out after some minutes of typing on the keyboard https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/396226 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 238208] Re: Need MemoryStick driver Ricoh R5C592 (part of R5C832/822chipset)
@VuDu. Yep, sorry about version number confusion. I use git here, but I create a snapshot. (Actually I mostly work directly on kernel tree) The problem was bad dma handling to memory > 4GB (And yes, you have it, because some of the memory < 4GB is used for IO devices, so to compensate, some of the system memory is placed at > 4GB address) -- Need MemoryStick driver Ricoh R5C592 (part of R5C832/822chipset) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238208 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
