[Bug 1104476] Re: Network manager cannot connect to WPA2/PEAP/MSCHAPv2 network without CA_Certificate

2013-06-07 Thread Mervin Beng
I have been hitting exactly what has been described on Arch (3.9 kernel,
nm-applet 0.9.8.0), and the workaround of removing the ca-cert line in
the config file works (permanently) for me. On Arch the permissions on
the config files are 600, and removing that line seems to permanently
address the problem.

Looks very much like a problem in nm-applet, which writes an incorrect
config for ca-cert when password is set to save.

[Bug 980710] Re: black font on black background in xfce terminal

2012-04-26 Thread Mervin Beng
After further checking and testing, I've found that many existing gtk
themes are not updated for gtk 3.4.x.

I've now selected the Adwaita theme, and the problems on evolution,
gnome, etc where black text appears on black are gone. There also
appears to be a need to have a ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini file with
the correct gtk settings. This has been tested on an openbox
environment, and I expect it is the same for xfce.

2010-03-28 Thread Mervin Beng
Bryce, I have been testing xorg-edgers PPA on an MSI Wind (i945), and I
noticed that XvMC was disabled even though the XV and XVMC modules were
loaded. This was with intel 2.10 and the 2.9 with patch from your PPA.
Kernels tested were 2.6.32 with backports, and 2.6.33.

The Xorg.0.log shows the extensions loaded, but XvMC module appears
disabled by default.

$ grep -i Xv /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(II) Loading extension XVideo
(II) Loading extension XVideo-MotionCompensation

Is there some setting for XvMC that I have missed out?

$ lspci|grep VGA

Thanks!

[Bug 469734] Re: [RV620] dell studio 15 karmic kernel crash on resume from suspend

2010-01-29 Thread Mervin Beng
I see that this report is marked as "Incomplete". Can someone please
advise what is needed for it to at least get attention, whatever the
priority?

- Checking through all the suggestions, it is NOT a duplicate -- not timeout,
not false positive, not a bug relating to fglrx (using fglrx is a workaround
that works; it's ati and radeonhd which have the problem)
- It is repeatable -- several fresh installs, even using live CD show this
problem
- It is not just a matter of kick-starting the X server using Ctrl-Alt-F7,
because there's underlying corruption, and after this restart the system will
freeze when switching to another VT

I am using fglrx for now, but given the number of uubuntu users with ATI
R600/700 users, IMO this problem should at least cbe investigated.

[Bug 469734] Re: [RV620] dell studio 15 karmic kernel crash on resume from suspend

2009-12-11 Thread Mervin Beng
Yes, the Ctrl-Alt-F7 brings back the screen (see post #4), but I found
that subsequent switching to a login terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1) will bring
the system to a complete freeze. At the moment the workaround that
(fully) works is to use the ATI fglrx driver. The caveat with the ATI
driver is that it needs to be re-installed each time there's a kernel
upgrade, otherwise DRM is lost, and performance drops dramatically.

2009-11-21 Thread Mervin Beng
Hi Eigenman,

I reverted to radeon, and the changes now cause resume from suspend to
work. Thanks.

Things are not done yet, as switching VTs (ctrl-alt-F4, etc) appears to
cause the system to still freeze, this time less dramatically (no
flashing video, just flashing caps lock and frozen system).

Mervin

[Bug 415023] Re: brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100

2009-11-08 Thread Mervin Beng
There are enough accounts to suggest that users should not try to
upgrade BIOS in the attempt to work around this problem. It won't work.

There are several options to work around it:

1. Disable gnome-power-manager (or for xubuntu, xfce4-power-manager). This will
work. The downside, I believe, is that you will lose suspend/hibernate on
closing the lid. For me this is bad, as I expect the system to at least go to
standby on closing the lid.
2. Use one of the power managers, but if adjusting brightness, hit
to bring up a menu, adjust (Fn-F4 or F5), and to
clear the menu. Otherwise adjusting brightness is a hassle.
3l The power managers will still cause the screen to flicker when trying to
autodim the screen. To clear, use the right button as above.

Is there any news about an expected fix for this problem?

[Bug 469734] Re: [RV620] dell studio 15 karmic kernel crash on resume from suspend

2009-11-05 Thread Mervin Beng
Attached is the Xorg.0.log (Karmic / atiradeon).

On Jaunty I used ati, radeonhd and fglrx, so I'm afraid I cannot give
you a useful log. By my recollection, ati and radeonhd did not have
(major??) suspend problems, but fglrx did until the latest two updates.

Some further info. I did some testing this morning:

Using ati driver.
- Hibernate wakes up ok (no need for Ctrl-Alt-F7), but after a hibernate, other
vt sessions (Ctrl-Alt-F4) show strange screeens. However, there is NO crash
report, and the X session (Ctrl-Alt-F7) is still running.

Using radeonhd driver.
- Hibernate works as above.
- Suspend is similar to ati. Needs Ctrl-Alt-F7 to wake it up, generates crash
alert; vt sessions show messed up screen but does not completely freeze the
system.

Based on the above, I will set the power manager to hibernate on lid
close instead of suspend. Wakeup will be much slower, but at least it
seems to be more reliable.

2009-11-04 Thread Mervin Beng
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 464552 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/464552

I have read the description for bug #472686 and it is extremely close in
symptoms:

1. Systems does not resume after opening lid without Crtl-Alt-F7 (not slow, but
forever).
2. When shutting down or switching vt (eg. Ctrl-Alt-F4), screen shows large
flashing rectangles (ie. video buffer messed up) and totally freezes. Nothing
gets the system back.

Unlike #472686, network manager and other daemons appear to be operating
ok after the forced (Ctrl-Alt-F7) X server wakeup after opening the lid.

[Bug 469734] [NEW] dell studio 15 karmic kernel crash on resume from suspend

2009-11-01 Thread Mervin Beng
Public bug reported:

When resuming from suspend, the lcd is blank, and comes back only with
Ctrl-Alt-F7. At this stage I get the kernel crash report.

This is on Karmic (9.10) after upgrade from Jaunty. However the system
still seems to function fine even though the crash warned that the
kernel had been corrupted. This is my first bug report, and the system
has sent up the ubuntu-bug report on its own. Excuse me if the report if
incomplete.

Video driver is atiradeon, but I see the same behaviour on radeonhd.

[Bug 415023] Re: brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100

2009-10-24 Thread Mervin Beng
Guido's comment is very apt. This type of bug can create very negative
perceptions for Ubuntu if it is not at least highlighted in release
notes. Just a few days ago a colleague said that he was interested to
test out Ubuntu on his netbook (most likely an MSI...) and I had to
caution him.

Note: the bug seems to appear in xfce4-power-manager also. I see exactly
the same issues when I run xubuntu's power manager.
