[Bug 307174] [NEW] Thin client's tmpfs still mounted when external device unable to mount

2008-12-11 Thread Michael Blinn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ltspfs

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

I carry an ntfs USB stick. When the device is not cleanly unmounted on Windows,
it won't mount correctly as a local device on an LTSP client.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Uncleanly unmount from a windows machine (pull the stick without stopping
the device)
a: On a full, fat standalone Hardy box, the device won't mount with the
message that the device wasn't unmounted correctly from Windows

2) Plug into a thin client
a: The device mounts on the desktop, the device name is shown correctly, but
I believe it's actually the mountpoint not the device.
b: The device filesystem size is the same as the client's tmpfs (109MB),
instead of the correct 16GB
   c: No files show up
d: You _can_ copy files to the mountpoint and believe you're copying to the
external device. These files persist across removal/insertion of the external
device.

3) Pull the device, go back to windows, insert, and then cleanly unmount by
stopping the device.
4) Plug into a thin client
a: The correct original external filesystem will mount with none of the
files you copied to the tmpfs mount point.

Gadi says: We should actually send a signal to remove the ltspfs mount if the
mount to the client fails

** Affects: ltspfs (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 242804] Re: Ubuntu Server x64 Kernel Oops - Random services tainted

2008-10-07 Thread Michael Blinn
The last message in the kernel discussion regarding this bug
(http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/2/28/280) says that they're queueing the fix
for 2.6.24-stable - how this translates to Ubuntu's 2.6.24-?? versioning
I do not know.

I have not seen this bugfix listed in any of the CVEs for Hardy Heron
linux-* updates, but it sure would be nice, as the affected servers are
our LTS production boxes.

At some point I will try to download an Intrepid LiveCD and test it, but
what I'm most interested in is fixing the kernels we have (ideally
without custom compilation!)

[Bug 242804] Re: Ubuntu Server x64 Kernel Oops - Random services tainted

2008-08-18 Thread Michael Blinn
Since disabling IPSec compression almost a month ago we have experienced
0 problems. I would conclude that the crashes we saw were related to the
kernel zlib bug reported here: http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/2/21/154

I'm hoping we will see a patch against the 2.6.24 kernel branch so that
we may re-enable compression.

After more reading, I'm curious if this is related to the IPSec/IPComp

Though I have an updated kernel I've disabled compression in my IPSec
configuration and will post results.

general protection faults. Will update as the testing progresses.

[Bug 242804] Re: Ubuntu Server x64 Kernel Oops - Random services tainted

2008-06-30 Thread Michael Blinn
I'm working on the same physical server as the original bug report. I
also noticed this in the kern.log at the end of reboot kernel messages,
which may or may not be relevant:

Jun 27 10:52:21 www kernel: [ 145.904725] mtrr: type mismatch for
d000,100 old: write-back new: write-combining
Jun 27 10:52:38 www kernel: [ 163.650905] mtrr: type mismatch for
d000,100 old: write-back new: write-combining
Jun 27 10:53:47 www kernel: [ 232.116870] mtrr: type mismatch for
d000,100 old: write-back new: write-combining

I've also attached two additional Oopses, which occurred before the
original bug report's Oops. Note the different affected processes.

These Oopses result in defunct processes which necessitate a reboot to
restore services. Unfortunately, the reboot fails and we must physically
power-cycle the box from the console - always fun on a production SCSI
RAID server.

Any help is most appreciated.

[Bug 37253] Re: Switch User should be disabled when not running under GDM

2008-06-16 Thread Michael Blinn
I removed fast-switch-user-applet. The option still appears when
clicking System->Quit from an LTSP/LDM terminal - For my users I'd
rather remove the option entirely; it is not used and having the button
there makes them think "hey what's this let me click it"

using: Ubuntu 8.04 w/ LTSP5 installed from alternate CD

[Bug 235772] [NEW] NBD_PORT default not correct

2008-05-29 Thread Michael Blinn
Public bug reported:

Fresh i386 Ubuntu Hardy install, not upgrade

Description:Ubuntu 8.04
Release:8.04

/opt/ltsp/i386/etc/init.d/ltsp-client-setup has
NBD_PORT=${NBD_PORT:-"9210"}

but

/etc/inetd.conf has:
9572stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/sbin/tcpd
/usr/sbin/nbdswapd

And, in lts.conf, NBD_SWAP=Y won't work unless you also specify NBD_PORT=9572
NBD_PORT should default to 9572 in ltsp-client-setup

(As per the edubuntu handbook I did cp /etc/apt/sources.list
/opt/ltsp/i386/etc/apt/ and update;safe-upgrade -- This may be related)

[Bug 232532] [NEW] processes not killed on logout

2008-05-21 Thread Michael Blinn
Public bug reported:

Some users' processes aren't being killed on logout. Users' processes
are also not killed on a XServer reset (ctrl+alt+backspace) and unless
an admin kills their processes manually they cannot log in.

Unfortunately, if they log in again before an administrator manually
kills the processes with killall -u, there are lots of gnome errors
about previous sockets and stale files, and the desktop is unusable.

In the below instance, the user 'mlewus' logged in and tried to start
Firefox. She was notified that 'firefox is still running. Shut down the
current session before starting a new one'. She logged out with the
System->Log out, clicked 'Log out' on the popup prompt, and was
presented with a locked desktop screen, complete with panel & icons for
a period of ~2 minutes. After about 2 minutes, she was returned to LDM.
I then checked the server and found these:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/cups# lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.04
Release:8.04

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/cups# ps auxw |grep mlewus
mlewus 17126 0.3 0.5 168384 47464 ?Sl 10:54 0:02
/usr/lib/firefox-3.0b5/firefox
mlewus 17598 0.0 0.0 5276 2192 ?S11:04 0:00
/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconfd-2 12
root 17709 0.0 0.0 3008 796 pts/1S+ 11:05 0:00 grep mlewus

In order to remove the processes I had to kill -9 them. The user could
then log in without difficulty.

[Bug 231974] Re: firefox print multiple copies fails

2008-05-21 Thread Michael Blinn
Thanks for the quick reply Richard. Just to be sure, I rm -rf'd my
.mozilla folder. The same thing happens. Just tried with 'gedit' and the
same behavior occurs.

Further troubleshooting finds that in System->Administration->Printing
on the 'Printer Options' tab of the printer, there is a 'Copies' setting
that is currently '1'. Also on the 'Job Options' tab there is a setting
for Copies, currently set to '1'. I'm guessing that CUPS is not
accepting gedit/FF's specification of multiple pages...?

I've looked through the cupsys package bugs and don't see anything
related. I've changed the source package to cupsys.

Thanks!

[Bug 217309] [NEW] 8.04 i386 -generic kernel seeing 3GB RAM on 64-bit 8GB RAM system

2008-04-14 Thread Michael Blinn
Public bug reported:

i386 Ubuntu Desktop -generic kernel (updated as of 2008-04-14) sees only
3GB RAM in my 64-bit 8GB computer.

Booting using an i386 Hardy Beta LiveCD finds all 8GB - also a Gutsy
64-bit LiveCD finds all 8GB.

I've booted using mem=8192M and this does not help.

I've tried both 2.6.24-16-generic and 2.6.24-12-generic and they both
only see 3GB.

[Bug 215727] [NEW] LDM_DIRECTX in ltsp-server-standalone 5.0.40~bzr2008

2008-04-11 Thread Michael Blinn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ltsp-server-standalone

Specifying LDM_DIRECTX=true in lts.conf causes X to break. Clients won't
boot to ldm

Description:Ubuntu hardy (development branch)
Release:8.04

ltsp-server-standalone is 5.0.40~bzr20080212-0ubuntu5

This lts.conf works:
[Default]
#LDM_DIRECTX=true

This lts.conf does not work

[Bug 213910] [NEW] Ignores lpoptions

2008-04-08 Thread Michael Blinn
Public bug reported:

I still see the same issues with Hardy Heron as are reported here:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/fedora/+source/libgnomeprint/+bug/34112

and, downstream (evince bug created by me), here:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/198134

In my experience the result is that the default printer is not respected
in evince, and uses the server's default printer instead of what is set
with lpoptions

[Bug 198134] Re: evince not respecting default printer

2008-03-05 Thread Michael Blinn
.lpoptions are not respected in Gutsy either - though I've only tried
i386 arch.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] log]# cat /etc/cups/lpoptions
Default UpstairsMain scp-fc5=true
[EMAIL PROTECTED] log]# cat ~user1/.cups/lpoptions
Default DownstairsMain
[EMAIL PROTECTED] log]# cat ~user2/.cups/lpoptions
Default UpstairsDahl
[EMAIL PROTECTED] log]# cat ~user3/.cups/lpoptions
Default Keith_Color_Printer

each of the ~user/.cups/lpoptions are set at login with the following
script in /etc/profile.d/set_printer.sh - I'm using LTSP and thin
clients, with printer based on hostname, not user.

#!/bin/sh
ws=$(echo $LTSP_CLIENT|cut -d. -f1)
case $ws in
   ws0-007 ) lpoptions -d UpstairsDahl ;;
   ws0-010 ) lpoptions -d DownstairsDahl ;;
   ws0-016 ) lpoptions -d UpstairsDahl ;;
   ws0-017 ) lpoptions -d Keith_Color_Printer ;;
esac

This may be an upstream GTK bug:

[Bug 198134] [NEW] evince not respecting default printer

2008-03-03 Thread Michael Blinn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

I've seen this bug on FC6 and Ubuntu Hardy Heron Alpha 5

FC6 'yum info evince':
Name : evince
Arch : x86_64
Version: 0.6.0
Release: 6.fc6
Size : 2.7 M
Repo : installed
Summary: Document viewer

Hardy Heron Alpha 5 'apt-cache policy evince':
evince:
  Installed: 2.21.92-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.21.92-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2.21.92-0ubuntu1 0
 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages
 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Running 'lpoptions -d PrinterName' to set a default printer is respected
by most other programs (OOo, Firefox) but not by evince - I've run this
command from a script in /etc/profile.d as well as typing it into a
gnome-terminal session.

After 'File->Print', the correct printer specified by the lpoptions
command should be hilighted in print dialog. Instead, the default CUPS
printer is hilighted. This stinks when you use something like LTSP
because you can have 10 or 20 printers connected and the default should
be based on workstation location and set by a login script using
lpoptions.

[Bug 196706] [NEW] Hardy - specifying XSERVER causes xorg.conf syntax error

2008-02-28 Thread Michael Blinn
Public bug reported:

Booting an i386 image from x86_64 server running Hardy Alpha 5 with
updates to today, 2008-02-28 - fresh ltsp-install-standalone and ltsp-
build-client

the 'vesa' driver didn't work on my new Dell laptop, just a blinking
cursor with no X, so I specified the xserver to use in
/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf

lts.conf:
[Default]
X_MODE_0 = 1024x768

[00:10:09:C3:D6:C1]
XSERVER = intel

Now, the client boots but this is the xorg.conf -- the Drivert"intel is not my
typo it's how the file looks

Section "Device"
   ### Available Drivert"intel"
   ### ...other comments excluded...
   Identifier "Card0"
   Drivert"intel"
   VendorName "Intel Corporation"
BoardName "Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller"
   BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection
