[Bug 980058] Re: Sometimes see vertical bands, artifacts across screen after boot

2012-06-06 Thread Michael Cobb
OK, so I've made a discovery in terms of what could be causing this
problem, it appears that when the display is garbled, it's because
vesafb is being used, rather than the intel driver. attached it the
relevant dmsg that i got by sshing into the computer, note the following
lines when the graphics are garbled:

Dmesg when the display is garbled:

[Bug 980058] Re: Sometimes see vertical bands, artifacts across screen after boot

2012-05-12 Thread Michael Cobb
** Description changed:

- WHAT HAPPENED INSTEAD:
- ==
- Since upgrading from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04, while booting, Plymouth is
displayed fine, there are no problems there. The problem occurs when Plymouth
finishes and Lightdm should start. 9 times out of 10, Lightdm starts fine and
everything works OK.
+ Since updating from 12.04 Beta 1 to 12.04 (Final) (I went from 11.10 to
+ 12.04 Beta 1 before that via a clean install), while booting, GRUB is
+ displayed fine, and Ubuntu begins to boot fine. It's only when Plymouth
+ is displayed (which happens fairly late into boot for me) that I start
+ to experience problems.

- However, occasionally instead of Lightdm starting, the screen shows a
- white box in the centre of the screen, surrounded by black bands.
+ Most of the time, Plymouth is shown fine, and everything is great.
+ However, occasionally Plymouth is shown garbled, there's little blobs of
+ colour (Sorry I can't provide much information because Plymouth is only
+ shown for a little while during my boot).

- moving the mouse leaves vertical artefacts on the screen, which makes me
- think that X/Lightdm hasn't froze, but I see no HDD activity when I
- enter my password and press enter (Maybe Lightdm crashes, leaving X (and
- mouse input) working fine?).
+ Then I see vertical bands of colour, it kind of looks like my display
+ has been stretched vertically and the whole display is 1px tall. (I have
+ posted some videos showing the behaviour below).

- Switching to any TTY clears the screen, however the only thing visible
- is a blinking vertical band (which moves along as I type my user-name
- and password to try to log in through a TTY)
+ I can log in, log out, switch to TTY's - do whatever, but the screen
+ still has vertical bands on it. Moving the mouse causes the bands to
+ change/update.

- From here I run:
- sudo shutdown -h now
- and enter my password again.
+ Switching to any TTY shows a blinking vertical line, which moves along
+ as I type commands, but it's impossible to see them (you can just see
+ the blinking cursor)

- The computer then restarts and is back to normal.
+ I can SSH into the computer and collect any logs if they are needed.

- The next time this happens I will try running:
- sudo pkill x
- To see if that can cause X to restart and show normally.
+ I then force shut-down the laptop and restart and everything works fine.

- I will attach a photo I took, and some mockups of the behavior in the
- TTY terminal.
-
- WHAT I EXPECTED TO HAPPEN:
- =
- I expected the computer to show Lightdm and allow me to log in normally and
use my computer
- (which it does do, nearly most of the time)
+ The only kernel command I have added is acpi_backlight=vendor (to be
+ able to set the backlight brightness)

2012-05-12 Thread Michael Cobb
Thanks for the reply. The laptop is only 6 months old, so i'm not sure
if that would be a problem. My laptop seems to be running cooler since
upgrading to 12.04. But I'll look into it though.

[Bug 980058] Re: Sometimes get a white box instead of Lightdm after boot

2012-05-09 Thread Michael Cobb
Okay, so it happened again today, except it's no longer a white box. It's hard
to explain but I recorded a video of it.
I also managed to save a copy of dmesg from when this was happening, if it's
relevant.

[Bug 980058] Re: Sometimes get a white box instead of Lightdm after boot

2012-05-05 Thread Michael Cobb
OK, so sorry for spamming the comments here, but this seems to be
happening more and more often, and it's so annoying. I've removed the
startup script from my lightdm config in case it was xbacklight screwing
up the graphics when I tried to change the backlight level - It happened
twice this moring, once after the other. I think this is a Plymouth bug
as Plymouth starts garbled too.

[Bug 980058] Re: Sometimes get a white box instead of Lightdm after boot

2012-05-03 Thread Michael Cobb
I ran 'ubuntu-bug xorg' after I rebooted the machine and logged in through
lightdm, so I imagine that the log was from after the issue.
I haven't experienced this bug since the final release of 12.04, however, I
experienced this bug just now. I saw a garbled Plymouth which leads me to
believe that this is either some bug with either the kernel? or Plymouth
starting up the graphics card.

I can still, blindly, access a terminal so if there are any commands
that need to be ran whilst the machine is being affected by this bug,
like collecting the log from lightdm, then I will be able to run them. I
just don't know what logs and stuff to collect.

[Bug 944862] Re: Non-default wallpaper does not display in lightdm with encrypted home directory

2012-04-23 Thread Michael Cobb
Okay, so I did some more experimentation, and I found that changing the
resolution in GIMP to match my monitors resolution made the image
display in lightDM. Could this be a problem with LightDM being unable to
handle non-default images that are not the same resolution as the
monitor?

[Bug 980058] Re: Sometimes get a white box instead of Lightdm after boot

2012-04-13 Thread Michael Cobb
I just experienced the above bug again, so I decided to take a video
after switching to TTY1 and logging in, you can see the blinking
horizontal cursor and a squashed version of the display (when holding
down return) - I didn't notice this until now.

I ran the command
sudo pkill x
multiple times in the video - to no effect (I just realized i should have ran
sudo pkill xorg - not pkill x - I'll take a better video next time and i'll get
the command right :P )
and i finally ran
sudo shutdown -h now
to turn off the computer

I also noticed that Plymouth didn't start during the boot (It usually
starts pretty late into boot - but it's always done this for me, i get
GRUB's background displayed during boot instead) and I saw a glitched,
vertical style background briefly. I now think that this may be a
Plymouth bug being as this time it didn't start when it normally would,
and it was glitched out.

[Bug 945156] Re: Low and Critical battery warnings show at the same time, Laptop hibernates anyway

2012-03-02 Thread Michael Cobb
Once the 'This computer is about to hibernate' dialogue shows, the
hibernation of the computer is enevitable, regardless of wether i
actually plug in the AC cord. (this screenshot was taken after resuming
from hibernation, because i forgot, however, the 2 dialogues stay open
regardless of wether the AC is plugged in or not)

Note the charging icon in the top right, yet the dialog remains, waiting
to be clicked, so the machine can enter hibernation

[Bug 945156] Re: Low and Critical battery warnings show at the same time, Laptop hibernates anyway

2012-03-02 Thread Michael Cobb
Just let my battery run down again, and the 2 dialogues that show are
both critical level, one says the computer will hibernate if not
connected to power, and the other says the computer is about to
hibernate... sorry if the original post confuses anyone. i took some
screenshots too.

[Bug 945156] [NEW] Low and Critical battery warnings show at the same time, Laptop hibernates anyway

2012-03-02 Thread Michael Cobb
Public bug reported:

When my battery gets low (I'm not sure of the actual %age value), 2
dialogue boxes show, one for 'low battery', and the other for 'critical
battery'. Leaving these dialogue boxes open, I quickly rush over and
plug the charger in, however, regardless of weather I click the 'X',
'Cancel' or 'Ok' (I cant remember the actual button captions, but
they're similar) The laptop hibernates anyway.

The low battery notification in the top right works fine at around 15%,
but I usually forget to do anything until I'm interrupted by the 2
dialogues, but by then it's too late, and the laptop will hibernate.

I have also tried to edit the low and critical battery percentage
triggers in dconf (or gconf?) without success, the low and critical
values were set to different levels, however it appears that the change
was not recognised by gnome-power-manager.

What I Expected:
==
- At 15%, the 'Low battery' warning would show in the top right.

- At 10%, A 'Low battery' dialogue should show, offering the user to 'Suspend'
or 'Do nothing'
If the user presses 'Suspend', then suspend
If the user presses 'Do Nothing' then do nothing (i.e. don't
hibernate)

- At 5%, Show a 'Critical battery' dialogue, with a countdown showing
the time until the computer will begin hibernation.

However, the dialogue should automatically dismiss if the laptop is
plugged into AC while either dialogue is being shown.

What Happened Instead:
===
1) The battery level was around 15%.
2) I Ignored the 'low battery warning' notification in the top right.
3) When the battery got to around 10%, The 2 'low' and 'critical' dialogue
boxes appeared together.
4) I tried to close the dialogues without the laptop entering hibernation.
5) The laptop went into hibernate regardless of what I do.
