[Bug 409819] Re: [regression] Built-in mic not working after pulse updates on Karmic. Intel 82801H (ICH8 Family) sound card.

2009-10-19 Thread Michael Favia
Duplicate symptoms and onset date here with:
lspci: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio
Controller (rev 03)

Fixed by running "alsamixer -V all" and switching the Front Mic Jack
Mode, Mic Jack Mode, Input Source, and Input Source 1 to "Front Mic"
Value, pushing up the capture volume to 100% and changing the digital
input source to "Digital Mic 1".

All of these steps might not have been necessary but t works so i wont
complain. Obviously this shouldn't be expected from a casual user after
release. Thanks for the bug report and reference points and good luck
fixing the bug. -mf

[Bug 435856] Re: nm-applet does not start in karmic

2009-09-24 Thread Michael Favia
Ok. so after a little more research it seems like that old package
mentioned above DID provide support for the old soname through a symlink
but it has since been revoked in a recent update this morning. It was
still in my "locate" cache but not on my harddisk.

Short term workaround is to create a symlink until the package is fixed:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libnm-glib-vpn.so /usr/lib/libnm-glib-vpn.so.0

Make sure you delete this symlink before you upgrade packages again
though so you dont conflict with upstream changes if it is fixed. -mf

2009-09-24 Thread Michael Favia
Meant to mention that i get the exact same error msg when attempting to

Running: Linux cobalt 2.6.31-10-generic #35-Ubuntu SMP Tue Sep 22

Looks like a fix is coming down the pike for the soname transition:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/427400/comments/8
otherwise oyou can make a symlink if you remember to remove it before
you upgrade next.

Issue confirmed. Manual connection of wired internet restores
connectivity without having to use dhclient, etc. Network manager is
still running in the background. it seems NetwrokManager was renamed to
network-manager in /etc/init.d but a backup version of the old script
was left. Was this a relic of upstart conversion or something? Should i
delete the old NetwrokManager.dpkg-backup file?

Jockey does now add the Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" line to the

until recently i though was ok. Unfortunately though i am unable to run

can anyone else confirm this bug by removing this line from their screen
section and adding it to your device section only. this only need to be

[Bug 191704] Re: hidd binary removed form bluez-utils package unable to connect as a result

2008-03-27 Thread Michael Favia
Ok to attempt to recreate i disconnected my keyboard, and deleted the
trust. I can now not reconnect using the applet as it crashed with an
out of memory error in a call to dbus (checking for a valid path for a
setting iirc). This error is reported against gnome-bluetooth as a bug
here (Bug #179399).

I dont know if there are otherwise any errors in the bluetooth stack so
as a temporary workaround i installed the recompiled current package
from Elliot and connected manually using "sudo hidd --search" with my
device in pairing mode. It is now functional but obviously not the way
it should be setup.

This leads me to the following shaky conclusion:

Except for the desired but optional inclusion of the old binaries (was
pand or similar functionality available in the normal binary of bluez-
utils?) the bluetooth stack seems functional and this is evidenced by
our ability to connect via the hidd binary. once bug in the bluetooth-
properties applet is fixed hopefully we will be able to register and
maintain persistent bt connections using the new and suggested dbus
method via the applet.

I have made no changes to any files, but I did setup another user

And DID require the addition of the Option to get window decorations.
While im not a fan of throwing the kitchen sink at the problem, does its
addition harm the cases where not required? If not then +1 on adding it
here. I systematically removed the possibility of somethign else causing

removed xserver-xgl (and deps), added option to screen section, forced X
restart and tada, window borders in compiz. This was an option that i
USED to have added manually, and one i though that was at least
installed by nvidia-settings or nvidia-xconfig. neither did. so as the
story goes my problem is fixed but i wasnt really worried about that in
the first place. what can we do to prevent this from happening to my
grandmother or my brother who cant and shouldnt be expected to edit conf

adding the xserver-xgl (and its deps) package and restarting X solved

I didnt actually "set it up". I'm very familiar with Xorg.conf files and
dont mind editing them if need be but i was commenting on the bug in an
effort not to fix *my problem* but the general problem that these users
seem to have as well. I was under the impression that the users who said
"yes" to the restricted drivers dialog should get to keep a working
desktop. And that is what i was commenting on.

[Bug 191704] Re: hidd binary removed form bluez-utils package unable to connect as a result

2008-02-18 Thread Michael Favia
@paul
this worked for me, your mileage may vary:

1. remove your edits of your conf files.
2. remove the links/trusts shown in bluetooth-properties
3. make your device visable and connectable
4. make sure the input service is running on that tab.
5. put your mouse in pairing mode and move it around

you should be presented with a gnome notification bubble to authorize
connection. if not consifder a restart of the bluetoth service or the
whole computer (shouldnt be necessary). make sure you have the gnome-
bluetooth package installed too or the notifications wont come up.

hope that helps. anyone else with confirmed working now? please comment.

@mlind: the binaries are missing but the service files are present and
enable the attachment of BT hidd devices (heyboard and mouse im using
right now). If you put you BT dongle in "visable and connectable" mode
in "bluetooth-properties" (assuming you installed bluez-gnome) then as
soon as you move the device it pops open a dialog to accept the
connection. I used to have to edit the hcid.conf manually or the other
bluetooth file. now it JustWorks for me. that said, i havent tested pand
(or rather the network service which i imagien auto detects devices like
the input service does once the device is in pairing mode). will do so

[Bug 191704] [NEW] hidd binary removed form bluez-utils package unable to connect as a result

2008-02-13 Thread Michael Favia
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bluez-utils

Upgrade to most recent hardy bluez-utils package and attempt to locate
hidd and or use. If there is a new way to search and connect BT keyboard
and mice please let me know and ill update the ubuntu guide, etc. but
this seems more like a packaging error than an purposeful omission.

** Affects: bluez-utils (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 136529] Re: Can't log in after upgrading

2008-01-29 Thread Michael Favia
Confirming that i performed no edits or permanent workarounds and this
bug was resolved for me with a recent (1-2weeks) update to what seemed
like gnome-keyring though others were obviously instream. As i said
actions attempted except temporary workaround to start a gnome session
while broken (killing gdm and startx form the CLI). Thx for resolution
and good luck hunting down the other variants.

Running startx& by itself works perfectly and loads the full gnome
session like usual.
