I retested using the mainline 2.6.33-020633-generic and the problem
remains. I tried the daily 2.6.34 but it crashes hard on bootup

2009-10-05 Thread Michael Fletcher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue
for you.

Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? If you are running Karmic
Koala (9.10) or newer you can run this command to collect some
information that will help diagnose the problem

Push ALT-F2 and type 'apport-collect 296353' without the quotes and push
ENTER.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 296162] Re: network dies with large amount of high speed traffic

2009-10-03 Thread Michael Fletcher
Annoyed Ape: This bug report is being closed due to your last comment
regarding this being fixed with Ibex. For future reference you can
manage the status of your own bugs by clicking on the current status in
the yellow line and then choosing a new status in the revealed drop down
box. Thank you again for taking the time to report this bug and helping
to make Ubuntu better. Please submit any future bugs you may find.

Faust: Some network cards are able to do some of the TCP/IP work
instead of the Linux kernel to reduce the load on your CPU. 'ethtool -K
eth0 rx off tx off' will force the Linux kernel to do that TCP/IP
checksumming instead of your network card. Likely there is a bug in the
network card of that fixes your problem.

One other observation: If you are having problems with dropped networks
try upgrading the firmware on your router. I did experience a problem
with a Linksys router that would crash after a large amount of
Bittorrent traffic.

[Bug 439760] [NEW] LiveCD X Freezes with 100% CPU [Karmic] [GeForce 9500 GT]

2009-09-30 Thread Michael Fletcher
Public bug reported:

When booting the latest daily livecd my computer freezes during X's
startup. The monitor briefly cycles off and then cycles on again but is
blank. No further startup occurs. When I log into the machine I can
see that X is using 100% of the CPU and no other parts of the desktop
seem to have started.

Dual Screen GeForce 9500.

This machine has worked ok in all previous releases of Ubuntu.

[Bug 434769] Re: Login Prompt on Live CD Text Mode

2009-09-24 Thread Michael Fletcher
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: upstart

- Ubuntu Jaunty used to drop you into a console when you added 'text' to
- the kernel bootup options. Karmic drops you into a login prompt on the
- livecd instead. This is a problem because I don't know what the
- username or password is on the live cd.
+ When I boot the livecd with the 'text' option I get a text mode login prompt.
In all previous releases this used to drop you into bash logged in as 'ubuntu'.
+
+ Tested on the Karmic September 24 daily iso.

- Tested on the Karmic September 22 daily iso.
-
- I need the console 'text' mode because X is crashing on startup.
- Several of the X troubleshooting wiki pages mention booting into 'text'
- mode if startup fails.
+ I need some formed of logged in text mode to diagnose a problem with X
+ on livecd startup. My screen shuts off shortly after X starts. I would
+ like to raise a bug with the xorg logs but I cannot get at them when

[Bug 434769] Re: Login Prompt on Live CD Text Mode

2009-09-24 Thread Michael Fletcher
I retried the Sept 24 daily iso and I still get a login prompt when I
bootup with 'text' mode on the live cd.

I was expecting to be logged in as root. Sorry I don't think I was very
clear when I wrote the original description. I will update it shortly.

[Bug 294528] Re: installing getlive crashed on wizard gui when pressing cancel

2009-09-22 Thread Michael Fletcher
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this appears
no be the normal behaviour of postfix. Ubuntu was trying to install
postfix because getlive requires it. Postfix needed answers in that
wizard and when you pushed cancel it caused the postfix install to fail.

We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more
sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu.

[Bug 434980] [NEW] integrity-check user interface broken karmic

2009-09-22 Thread Michael Fletcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: casper

When I run the integrity-check on either Karmic Alpha 6 or the September
22, 2009 nightly LiveCD all I see is the message 'stdin: error
0\nOpening pipe: No such file or directory' when I attempt to run the
integrity-check (Check disc for defects). This used to work on Jaunty.
I have observed this on a physical machine as well as a VirtualBox
machine.

If I switch to virtual terminal 8 I can see that the integrity check
completed successfully.

I am booting from a 1GB USB stick on the physical machine and an
emulated cdrom on VirtualBox. This ISO md5sum's correctly.

I have attached screenshots of virtual terminal 1 and virtual terminal
8.

[Bug 434210] [NEW] 'text' mode boots into X

2009-09-21 Thread Michael Fletcher
Public bug reported:

Adding the option 'text' to the livecd bootup options does not prevent X
from starting. Previous releases (ex Jaunty) used to drop you into the
login window.

I require this to diagnose a problem with X that causes my computer to
freeze on boot

I have tested this on two different physical machines and with
VirtualBox. I downloaded the latest alpha, removed the 'quiet splash'
options from the kernel boot options and replaced them with 'text' and
pushed enter.

Sorry if this is the wrong package. I couldn't really figure out what
package this should belong to.

I followed some instructions

[Bug 409664] [NEW] Screen Dimmed After Resume

2009-08-05 Thread Michael Fletcher
Public bug reported:

I am able to suspend and resume using my new EeeTOP ET1602. The problem
is that the screen is dimmed after a resume.

It seems only half as bright it used to be. The brightness controls
still work but the highest brightness mode is only have as bright as it
used to be.

Suspending using the power button, the menu on the top right or pushing
FN-ZZ all have the same effect.

Rebooting fixes the problem.

This happens on 9.10 alpha 3 livecd as well as my installed 9.04.

[Bug 106653] Re: Ubuntu main menu applet scales poorly

2008-11-10 Thread Michael Fletcher
I use an Eee PC and for space concern, use the Main Gnome menu as well.
The Arrow causes the Ubuntu logo to look "dirty". Is it possible to not
have the arrow there at all?
