[Bug 971897] Re: segfaults with any pdf file after upgrading to 12.04

2012-04-02 Thread Michael Gilbert
This was already reported in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xpdf/+bug/669211 which is a
different issue and already close, so that discussion doesn't belong
there.

Unfortunately given past ubuntu development interest in xpdf, I doubt
anyone will spend the time to figure out a fix for this, so here is your
workaround for this cycle...

$ wget
http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/x/xpdf/xpdf_3.02-21_i386.deb
$ wget
http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/p/poppler/libpoppler13_0.16.7-2ubuntu2_i386.deb
$ sudo dpkg -i xpdf_*.deb libpoppler13_*.deb

That installs the known working oneiric xpdf packages.

[Bug 669211] Re: Xpdf segfaults on start in libpoppler.so.7

2012-03-28 Thread Michael Gilbert
i took a minute to look at this, and yes, once again, there is a
segfault on all pdf's :( the backtrace is different, so this really is a
different issue...but anyway the discussion is here now, so on to the
solution...

to fix this, you can simply install the known working oneiric xpdf and
poppler packages:

$ wget
http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/x/xpdf/xpdf_3.02-21_i386.deb
$ wget
http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/p/poppler/libpoppler13_0.16.7-2ubuntu2_i386.deb

because it was fixed in preparation for 11.10 well after 11.04 was
released. now, there are some updates for older releases, but someone
needs volunteer to do the work to prepare a fix. that simply hasn't
happened here. i assume everyone that would be capable of that has
upgraded to 11.10 anyway where it isn't a problem.

This is where code re-use comes in quite handy; rather than reinventing
the wheel. gnome is good. Put a light layer on top of it (that
requires minimal developer intervention to maintain) to make it better.

If you re-read that post a bit more carefully, I'm sure you'll quickly
notice that my underlying message says nil about UI design itself (and
whether or not other OS vendors get it right or not is irrelevant), but
instead pinpoints backwards-compatibility as the foundationally relevant
issue at play here (i.e. Windows 8 users will be very satisfied once
they discover they still have their familiar "Windows classic" UI).
Again the problem here (in my opinion) is that Unity has no "Ubuntu
classic" (or "GNOME classic") workspace to address the backwards-
compatibility issue of the human psyche of existing Ubuntu users.

[Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken

2011-11-04 Thread Michael Gilbert
As a point of reference, Windows 8's Metro user interface is going to
provide a "Windows Classic" workspace for backwards compatibility. This
is an area that Microsoft has consistently gotten right over the years,
and thus helped them maintain their position in the market. Even when
they make advances, they always retain a layer of backwards
compatibility to avoid disparaging their existing customers (and thus
losing them).

Taking this lesson to heart (I believe) would greatly improve the
growing tension that Canonical's go-it-alone mindset is generating in
the community. Thus, the simple and obvious solution to the "Unity
problem" (and most of these NIH design decisions) is to retain a
backwards-compatible layer (e.g. GNOME interface in a Unity workspace).
So, anyway, if you don't want to risk losing more-and-more users and
positive mind-share about Ubuntu, you're going to have accept the
reality that backwards-compatibility needs to be a key tenant of your
community involvement and design approach.

2011-07-14 Thread Michael Gilbert
download the source:

apt-get source xpdf

look at the vcs-browser entry in the control file:

gedit xpdf-*/debian/control

but this is all moot since whoever is in charge of syncing from debian
can just do that, and a bunch of bugs will be fixed including this one.

yes, that would certainly work, but someone would actually need to
volunteer to do that.

my point was not to suggest going backwards, but to be more mindful when
going forward.

This conclusion is incorrect. The conversion works fine in Debian, but
since Ubuntu makes changes without fully fleshing out potential side
effects, things like this happen. This would not be a problem if they
were using the Debian poppler version.

that's definately a different issue. you should submit a new bug

epdfview also uses poppler, and all evidence points poppler as the root
cause at this point (probably a compiler option, and especially since
the debian poppler package can be dropped in and it works), so i would
say that this bug should be reassigned there.

can you attach a backtrace for the epdfview crash also? thanks.

[Bug 669211] Re: Xpdf segfaults on start in libpoppler.so.7

2011-03-15 Thread Michael Gilbert
poppler 0.16's api differs from 0.12, which xpdf is currently built for.
i will fix this in debian when i find the time.

sorry for the rant, but this is exactly why ubuntu every ubuntu release
turns out so buggy. blingy packages are pushed without consideration of
their effects on the rest of the system.

so, anyway, someone needs to spend some time on the patch for this (i
won't necessarily get to this any time soon), otherwise, the revert will
need to be done for natty just like what was done for maverick.

[Bug 691276] Re: xpdf prints many error messages

2011-02-25 Thread Michael Gilbert
this is already fixed in versions that use poppler. assuming #699211
gets fixed before release, then nothing needs to be done for this issue.
otherwise, they're just warnings anyway, and i don't think its really
worth it to apply an additional divergence from debian just for that.

[Bug 669211] Re: Xpdf segfaults on start in libpoppler.so.7

2011-02-25 Thread Michael Gilbert
i'm the debian maintainer. i've spent a day trying to track this issue
down already without any luck. its probably originating in a dependency
(like freetype). i'm not really sure why, and i don't have any more
time to dig into this.

if someone wants to try mixing/matching dependencies using debian's
packages, that could be useful in isolating the problem.

[Bug 619002] Re: xpdf needs patches for poppler 0.14 api changes

2011-01-31 Thread Michael Gilbert
it turns out that i was wrong about the cause of the problem. it wasn't
the api change, it was some other problem in a dependency, but that was
handled in maverick by reverting to an older debian version. from what
i can tell, the new package works fine on natty.

[Bug 611446] Re: [maverick] xpdf crashed with SIGSEGV in GlobalParams::findFontFile()

2010-09-07 Thread Michael Gilbert
actually a sync with debian's package won't fix anything. i've already
tested debian's 3.02-11 sources on ubuntu, and the problem still exists.
this is an issue in the package dependencies somewhere; probably
fontconfig.

the solution is to revert to 3.02-2 from lucid that is known to work.

[Bug 611446] Re: [maverick] xpdf crashed with SIGSEGV in GlobalParams::findFontFile()

2010-09-06 Thread Michael Gilbert
after sleeping on this, my best guess is that the issue is in
fontconfig, or perhaps ubuntu's new fonts since those are rather
untested (except in maverick). one could possibly try not using those.

ok, yeah, i've spent quite a bit of time on those bugs, so things are

ubuntu ships with, so it looks like all of these issues are going to
remain in maverick.

[Bug 611446] Re: [maverick] xpdf crashed with SIGSEGV in GlobalParams::findFontFile()

2010-09-06 Thread Michael Gilbert
ok, so i spent 5 hours on this tonight, and got absolutely nowhere.
then i tried the maverick package on debian along with ubuntu's 0.14
poppler, and it works just fine. at this point there isn't really
anything else i can do. this is an ubuntu-specific issue.

you could try various versions of the dependencies (mixing and matching
from debian). i know this isn't ideal, but i have no idea what ubuntu
is doing differently that would cause this. sorry :(

my thinking was that "system" is a little more general than "computer".

[Bug 612231] Re: Search gets confused at end of page

2010-08-30 Thread Michael Gilbert
you'll need to install debian's poppler as well (ubuntu's poppler is the
cause of the segfault), and perhaps some of the other dependencies. or
you could test it on a debian unstable system directly. the problem
will likely not be seen with the upstream sources directly.

ok, i think i understand what you're saying now. however, i can't
reproduce it with 3.02-10 on debian. it may have been a temporary issue
with 3.02-2. can you try a newer package? note 3.02-9 in maverick is
in bad shape, so you won't get anywhere with that.
