[Bug 1864188] [NEW] After the upgrade of 19.10 on 2020-02-18, wifi does not exist

2020-02-21 Thread Michael Grivas
Public bug reported:

lsmod shows the the modules are on, but no wifi hardware seems available.
That happened just after the kernel update I did on 18th of Feb. 2020, on
Ubuntu 19.10. No other change.
System is Dell Vostro 5490/i7 .

mgrivas@Vostro:~$ lsmod | grep iwl

[Bug 1410540] Re: Touchpad scrolling in Ubuntu Software Centre is broken

2019-09-13 Thread Michael Grivas
Very similar case now:
The two-finger scrolling does not work at all, as if not enabled. Disable and
back, reboot, power off and on ... nothing helped it.

DistroRelease: Ubuntu 18.04
Uname: Linux 4.15.0-62-generic #69-Ubuntu SMP Wed Sep 4 20:55:53 UTC 2019 x86_64
CurrentDesktop: Gnome

[Bug 1410540] Re: Touchpad scrolling in Ubuntu Software Centre is broken

2019-09-13 Thread Michael Grivas
Addendum :
The problem started recently, after one of the last updates, since June 2019.
It is irrelevant to mouse, which works fine, including the wheel-scrolling.
The system is a P50 lenovo, and problem appears either while on docking station
or not.

[Bug 1816308] Re: gnome-shell crashes with SIGSEGV in meta_window_actor_is_destroyed() when changing workspace after several minutes of work in one workspace

2019-03-07 Thread Michael Grivas
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1812527 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1812527

Diego, the problem is mostly relaxed, not 100% solved. However, from few
crashes per day to once every two weeks or so ... I can put up with !

The only thing I did was to disable the animation. That alleviates the problem
in both Ubuntu and Fedora (same machine), to the extent that it does not much
affect anymore.
I have few extensions running, like dash-to-panel, openweather, syncthing and
volume mixer, without an issue. Also, I work (most times) with 1-2 external
monitors and the LCD, again without issue.

The animation can be disabled in two ways:
1. From the "Tweaks" tool, tab "Appearance".
2. With gconf-editor, to the org.gnome.desktop.interface.enable-animations

Yes, the fix seems to have saved us. Confirmed, with kernel
4.15.0-46-generic, an Ubuntu 18.04 update on 4th of March.

[Bug 1812527] Re: [bionic][regression] gnome-shell crashes with SIGSEGV in meta_window_actor_is_destroyed(self=NULL) called from _switchWorkspaceDone() [windowManager.js:1787]

2019-03-01 Thread Michael Grivas
Indeed this is not related to Android and it should be better upstream.
Thanks Daniel.

Although removing the Animation alleviates a lot the problem, it does not solve
it.
Furthermore, it is not only Ubuntu problem. It appears to my Fedora, pretty
similar to what I see in Ubuntu. And it appears (in both) very few times after
disabling the animation.

By the way, in my case, the track does not show "self=NULL". It's just empty:
gnome-shell crashes with SIGSEGV in meta_window_actor_is_destroyed()

[Bug 1812527] Re: gnome-shell crashes with SIGSEGV in meta_window_actor_is_destroyed(self=NULL) called from _switchWorkspaceDone() [windowManager.js:1787] when running Android emulator (QEMU)

2019-02-18 Thread Michael Grivas
I had the same, without using any Android emulation. When changing
workspace, the gnome-shell was actually freezing and then restarting.
Sometimes it could kill the session.

Disabling the animation did the trick ! No issue anymore (although no
fancy scrolling) .

[Bug 1816308] Re: gnome-shell crashes with SIGSEGV in meta_window_actor_is_destroyed() when changing workspace after several minutes of work in one workspace

1. I agree, at the deep end it's the same issue. However, the other bug
was about Andoid Emulator, which is not the case. Actually, the bug
#1812527 is a case of that one.

2. I tried the solution mentioned (disable the animation with dconf-
editor) and it solved the problem.

[Bug 1816308] [NEW] gnome-shell crashes with SIGSEGV in meta_window_actor_is_destroyed() when changing workspace after several minutes of work in one workspace

2019-02-17 Thread Michael Grivas
Public bug reported:

After some recent update, I face the following issue:
Working on a workspace for some time (cannot say how much time), with or
without lots of windows open, the workspace takes 2-3 minutes to recover, shows
a crash dialog and restarts gnome.

In fewer cases, after days of not rebooting, the gnome-shell dies
instead of restarting, killing the session.

I normally click to submit the bug reports, which should be in:
https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/b56fc2894b10f99f5b9629befd4030528cf0fe943fd6d376f53b724791abcc83b582e15ae82346f04a637b2c7be643f2749a1bdec23b9bc4b9d8cd4c4aa1070e

There are both created the /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id and
/var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash .
The ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash does not work. Seems
like apport-gtk is frozen.

The next updates did not fix it.

2017-06: Quite a long time for such a bug to survive.
As Anatoly said, it is worse on 16.10 .
If you lock the session with wrong layout, you are doomed.
Is there any hint where we should search for a solution?
Do you have any place in code to try to debug?

[Bug 1615734] Re: Multiple monitors broken

2017-05-10 Thread Michael Grivas
Some of the aforementioned effects disappeared for me with the following:
1. Log out
2. Get in to console (alt+ctrl+f2 - for example) and login as user.
3. Delete .nvidia-settings-rc and the whole .nv/
3. Back to graphical (alt+ctrl+f7) - NO login yet.
4. Choose Gnome Classic or Gnome (default) (NOT ubuntu)
5. Log in.

Setup: P50, docking station, ubuntu 16.10 updated to 4.8.0-51, with
nvidia 381.09.

To me, it seems that the problem is in Unity trying to set the nvidia
some way.

Similar situation on 16.10.
The "details" box cannot be enlarged and sometimes opens as a single line.
If it opens big, then it can be shrunk but not enlarged.
Possibly related to #1321088 .

Similar situation on 16.10. In some update, it was fixed, then broke again in

[Bug 1559228] Re: [20ENCTO1WW, Realtek ALC298, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all

2017-03-24 Thread Michael Grivas
Recent updates seem to have made it worse.
1. Docking station's headphones remain as was: It does not even detect it.
2. Docking station's microphone is detected in alsa-mixer.
3. Headphones on PC jack get no output ! In all controls, sound seem to go
there correctly, but the actual headphones receive no sound. It comes after
adding "options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-amic", but then do work the lights
for mute.
4. Microphone on PC jack works fine.

Re: [Bug 1645891] Re: After adding a second monitor, mouse pointer flickers and/or disappears in a zone near the top of first (notebook) monitor, while some apps show slow in ext display.

2017-03-06 Thread Michael Grivas
Hello team / Christopher,

One more interesting finding, which points towards Compiz + GLX +
nouveau:

1. The glxgears works fine on first monitor (60 fps or more) but very
slow on secondary. Actually, the speed is "obvious": exactly 1 fps !
This happens only if the whole window is on the secondary. If even a
tiny fraction of the window remains on first monitor (even just a single
pixel), the speed is normal.

2. When glxgears or glxheads runs on first monitor, the
mouse-dissappearing-zone is clear and stable: No mouse pointer between
1/8 and 3/8 of the screen from top.
This happens regardless of where the glxgear windows is placed (in 1st
monitor).
It also happens if only a tiny fraction of the window remains on first
monitor (even just a single pixel), while the rest is in secondary.

3. When glxgears or glxheads runs on second monitor, the pointer
flickers in the mouse-dissappearing-zone, however, it remains mainly
visible.

I found some older chats blaming the nouveau drivers for X-org. However,
the nvidia does not work for me (no second monitor at all), so could not
check.

Best regards,
Michael

Re: [Bug 1645891] Re: After adding a second monitor, mouse pointer flickers and/or disappears in a zone near the top of first (notebook) monitor, while some apps show slow in ext display.

2017-01-30 Thread Michael Grivas
Hello Christopher,

In some recent tests:
a. It occurs with monitor connected either on the laptop's HDMI, or the
docking stations HDMI.
b. In one case monitor is VGA (with converter), in the other it is HDMI.
c. I have no access to other type, for the moment.
d. I have not disabled the card, but I have used it only with power
supply, so perfromance profile should be enabled.
e. The nvidia proprietary does not work correctly. It causes a lot of
issues, including image corruption and freezing of all when suspending.
Also, it does not properly drive the externral monitor.
f. I will try to check with the image you mentioned. However, the
problem seems to exist since quite some time. My system is fully updated
to the most current modification.
g. The flickering on basic monitor changes with what windows are open.
For example, it is always worse when evolution is maximized there.
Some times it goes away if I open a gedit write some few lines and then
mark them using the mouse. Sometimes it just needs few clicks within the
flickering area or even just leaving the cursor there for few seconds.
h. For the external monitor issue, the two programs that suffer most are
HipChat and Viber. Both are fine if one part resides on the standard
monitor.

Michael

[Bug 1645891] [NEW] After adding a second monitor, mouse pointer flickers and/or disappears in a zone near the top of first (notebook) monitor, while some apps show slow in ext display.

2016-11-29 Thread Michael Grivas
Public bug reported:

It seems to be duplicate of both :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1641467
and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1629300 .
Possibly related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1278223

A - flickering in first display.
The zone starts just below the top panel and its height is about 1/7 of the
screen.
Flickering starts immediately entering the zone, even half of the pointer may
be flickering.
To the centre of the zone, flickering is more prevalent, up to completely
disappearing.
The flickering has a periodic pattern, which seems to be affected by the
windows displaying in the second (external) monitor !!

B - external monitor.
Some applications show really slow there. Worse case is HipChat (Atlassian chat
program), which shows fine as long as even a tiny fraction exists on the
primary display.
At the moment the whole window passes to the secondary, then even the scroll
bar has a delay of a second a move.

To check, I have played with the ~/.config/monitors.xml without success.
It seems that each configuration is saved there, even duplicates, after adding
the same external monitor and re-configuring it (absolute duplicate in
monitors.xml)

C. Side-effects and related phenomena.
Some times the "Screen display" control freaks, when enabling the external
monitor. It may freeze or insist to put them in mirroring. Most of the times it
just forgets a setup (although in monitors.xml) after adding a different
external monitor.
For each workspace, there is a different background, done with Unit5y Tweak
Tool.

All updates have been done, without effect.

[Bug 1307559] Re: Window decorations not drawn on external monitor

2016-11-15 Thread Michael Grivas
Problem persists in Ubuntu 16.10.

The button *do work* but they do not show up. Clicking on space, where
"close" should be, it closes the window. Same for minimize and maximize.

Details: Lenovo Thinkpad P5, with standard kernel 4.8.0-27, dual video:
nouveau driver for NVIDIA Corporation GM107GLM [Quadro M1000M] (rev a2) and
i915 for Intel HD Graphics 530 (Skylake GT2, rev 06).
Build-in : 1920x1080 (native) - scale factor 1,12
External : 1920x1200 (native) - scale factor 1 - plugged on display port.
Theme: The default (Ambiance)

Workaround worked: compiz --replace &
After that, all controls show fine.

[Bug 782406] Re: LibreOffice Writer Document Compare (regression)

2013-01-05 Thread Michael Grivas
@ Gretha:
It seems to me that you're quite an expert in OSS. But, in that case, you
should know that most of OSS developers are not getting paid for what they do
(at least not for the whole thing or in the same rate) .
Then, one realizes that they will not fix any problem, because they do not have
to do it.
Yes, an OSS project may be bad or even doomed by the users. But, OSS developers
do not always care about that.

Now, in your case, I understand that you work for a big firm with an obvious
large budget.
If you want the fixes you mention done, why don't you arrange a payment for a
developer to fix it?
I would expect it to cost about half a mid-range western European salary.
And you would then help the whole community. And you would be happy (your
clients especially).
And many more would be happy. And the developer would be happy. And it would
not cost too much.

I am sure that if you ask, plenty would do that for you (and the whole
community) for no more than 1000 euros.
Why don't you try that path?
