[Bug 254656] [NEW] Kate does not start when set as the default editor for a paticular file extention
Public bug reported: I prefer Kate as my default text editor. In 7.04, I had adjusted various file extensions to open Kate as the default editor. I wished to do so on 8.04 workstations, and found it not working. If I put the editor back to "Text Editor" then the default text editor does launch. I verified that kate never starts via "sudo ps aux"... kate does not show up. I found a work around to this problem... in the file association dialog, create a new association, and type in "kate" into the "Use custom command" field. So, there seems to be some problem with the provided selection for Kate in Ubuntu 8.04. Please let me know if there is further information I could provide that would assist. This problem still existed with compiz. My work around was to purge the compiz* packages off and reboot. I would be willing to put compiz packages back onto a test box. I rebooted just now and logout.wav did NOT play even though it had when I pressed the test button when selecting it. I guess both files are thus valid examples. This sort of sounds like the bug I see. I have various wav files that I liked to customize my environment with. I place these files in a directory I create ~/Sounds and then select the "Select sound file..." to pick it for an event. I have never heard the login.wav work with Ubuntu Hardy 8.04. I think logout.wav has failed, but it seems to be working as I test. Is this a file format issue? Do other types of media files work correctly, just not wav? I have no idea why parallels-config does not fix the -19 troubles. Usually when I run parallels-config I see about four drivers being compiled. Any update on this trouble? I saw a newer build of the -19 kernel flow out. I was worried it was -20 at first. I would rather not pull -18 kernel packages off of the one test system I have in order to rebuild my main system. It is very slick to have Parallels in the Vendors repository from the point of view that package dependencies are handled far more gracefully than with Parallels .deb package. (Mount a Samba share to a mount point on the local file system, Browse it with Nautilus, double click a file and up comes a box asking you to authenticate again! Reason being something decides to launch the app with smb:// instead of file://). I tried to log this nonsense during the beta. I recall one response I received was "I do not have Samba in my recreate / test environment." And that is MY problem HOW?!?!? Digging a bit deeper...
Fullscreening mpeg and avi files run from the Desktop started crashing
once I had reloaded the test workstation with the release version of
Hardy.
However, I just discovered:

and used such switched back to Metacity.
{test environment} Cleanly rebooted workstation, fire up the toggle
applet, verify Metacity is selected, reload the window manager with the
same applet... then and only then does drag and drop between windows in
the Workspace Switcher resume working, therefor I think I can safely
assume Metacity is the active window manager.
{result} Can full screen mpeg / avi videos without a crash!!!
Possibly a Compiz caused crash then?

Testing "gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=file:///path/to/video" produces the same results as Totem... reboot, launch via that method, no sound and play back stops after a few seconds. Close the window. Launch again and plays normally with audio/sound as expected. I will try to capture a Totem backtrace next. Today I reloaded my Hardy test box with the release version - formatted all partitions. Problem as described still exists. The test box has an empty /var/crash directory. I decided to investigate if the PID really goes away. Greetings Steve- I have been all around on thus bug. First I thought it was a Totem bug, next Nautilus but found that if I mount the Samba share the crash is the same. Usually I mount Samba shares instead of using the GUI. Following is I think the answer to your "mount the samba share as a kernel mount..." [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/mnt/ldslnx01/data/AppData/Estonia$ cat tallinn.mpeg > /dev/null [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/mnt/ldslnx01/data/AppData/Estonia$ Nothing bad happens. And nothing bad happens playing the movie file with Totem as long as you do not fullscreen it. Sometimes the first time I play a/the movie from the Samba share, it will not play straight through. I have to close Totem, open the file again, then it plays fine. Maybe a cache issue? Also hinting at caching... I deleted both log files for this Hardy workstation on the server... log.ip and log.hostname. I played the movie file again, fullscreen, crash. No log what so ever was generated for the client. I find that very odd. Does a Linux client really cache THAT well? Speed of LAN is switched 100MBps, so 100MBps Full Duplex. Yes, consistent crash every time when I fullscreen the movie. Sometimes when I enlarge the player window, but the consistent problem is fullscreen'ing. My Samba PDC is running Debian Sarge, and updated packages from samba.org which are 3.0.26a-1. Pretty much running stock Sarge other than I snagged a newer kernel a long time ago from "testing"... so this package is the kernel package on the server: linux- image-2.6.12-1-k7_2.6.12-10_i386.deb. I updated the kernel to get a solid version of xfs, as our standard filesystem is xfs. I think that is all that the DebuggingSoundProblems document specified for me to collect. Also, when booting the 2.6.24-16 kernel this last time, I did the Ctrl- Alt-Fkey to see the progress. Public bug reported: I installed Hardy on an IBM ThinkPad G41 from an ISO dated either 2008-02-27 or maybe 2008-02-26. That has kernel 2.6.24-10 included. I then proceeded to download all available updates, and add additional packages, all via Synaptic Package Manager. I ended up with kernel 2.6.24-16 and rebooted to "no sound'ville". I see bug reports hinting that -11 was working, the break occurred at -12. Version 12 and version 16 are fairly far apart, thus opening a new bug since I did not ever see -11, -12, etc... just -10 that works and -16 that does not work. I enabled the Grub menu, so am content with booting -10 for now. Please be in touch if I may be of any assistance in tracking down this problem. Sigurd Hogsbro: It is not specific to the AM64 version. A friend of mind is running 7.10 AM64 and is having NO troubles at all. For me the x86 version of 7.10 was a nightmare. I tried installing 7.10 on all ext3 partitions, better but not perfect. Performance got much better when I dropped back to 7.04 for example w/ normal partitioning scheme (ext3 for /boot, all others xfs). I did some initial testing with Hardy (8.04) and my normal partitioning scheme was stable as in 7.04. I am very disappointed to see no activity on this xfs corruption issue. I did some initial testing with Hardy Heron and as far as I can tell there is no similar corruption issue. I am getting the impression that the x.10 releases of Ubuntu are to be avoided. I logged a but against 6.10 which was never fixed. 7.04 thankfully works properly in that specific area. Now this xfs corruption nonsense in 7.10, but 8.04 from the first looks seems to be headed in a better direction. I guess at least new releases come more often than Debian! The BasKet package seems to come with so many icons already, I guess you are the better judge. As I reported earlier, that particular file is at least a better icon for the launcher than what it is currently. I went with the svg icon rather than a png as svg seems to be re-sizable and I know Gnome supports resizing desktop icons. Due to bugs "133786 Bus error when running Firefox or Epiphany" and "179238 xfs corruption - Clean install of 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon and applying latest updates" I refuse to give Ubuntu 7.10 another chance. Due to those errors I was researching how to get testing with Hardy, and last evening searched and found http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/ which looks like the place to get daily builds of the Hardy ISO so was seriously considering setting up a test install of Hardy to verify those bugs are indeed squashed. I will thus verify that this BasKet bug is squashed in Hardy. When you said you tested with both KDE 3 and 4, I find that a bit puzzling as I tried to open the bug against Ubuntu, not Kubuntu. Did I make a mistake somehow? I ended up reloading to Ubuntu 7.04 - OUTSTANDING RESULTS!!! The systems run noticeably faster. Able to have xfs filesystem (other than /boot which is ext3). I found a project for Ubuntu downloading the latest binaries of Firefox and Thunderbird direct from Mozilla. Vista Business in a Parallels VM session is actually quite tolerable, whereas before it was "click. did I actually click a few minutes ago?!" With such good news, I did not want to keep it to myself. I finally had enough and decided to give Ubuntu 7.04 a try. xfs is stable in 7.04. And the entire system seems NOTICEABLY faster running 7.04 rather than 7.10. I discovered the Ubuntuzilla project, thus was able to get current TBird (and Firefox as well while I was at it) in 7.04. http://ubuntuzilla.wiki.sourceforge.net/ The latest Envy works well for installing nVidia drivers. http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html And the Parallels VM environment installs well on 7.04. (The latest build actually would install on 7.10.) Parallels is running significantly faster with a Vista Business CD installing. Now when I click something in the Vista installation, it is actually a tolerable time before Vista responds. Those apps are the primary apps I need in native Linux. [Bug 179238] xfs corruption - Clean install of 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon and applying latest updates
Public bug reported: Installing on a clean hard drive, ext3 on /boot and all others xfs, I am suspecting strange xfs filesystem corruption. I discovered this due to trouble with Firefox and also Gnome Terminal. One bug report in particular found a bumper crop of people encountering this trouble, and running xfs as their filesystem. I reinstalled 7.10 again, reformatting all partitions ext3. However, I think I will live with ext3 to keep vendors happy. So the attached log files have been captured on a 100% ext3 system. Oh and yes, I have all partitions as xfs other than /boot which is ext3. Ditto for on one of my clean re-installations Gnome Terminal would not start as well. I just had quite a fight with a clean install of 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon and applying the updates makes Firefox no longer start. Turned out the solution was to mark the Firefox related packages to be reinstalled. I have tested again with Ubuntu Desktop / Server 7.04 and both installers successfully install with /boot being ext3 and all the other partitions xfs. I have retested with Xubuntu 6.10, going directly for ext3 format for /boot. IT WORKED! Clarification: Xubuntu 6.10 I was installing on a clean HDD. First selected ext2 for /boot. Upon finishing the partition setup, all partitions were xfs, including /boot. Later when I blew all the partitions away and selected ext3 for boot, then / was ext3 but /boot was still incorrectly xfs. Thus thought the installer complaining with /boot being xfs was a valid complaint, just we had not specified /boot be xfs. Public bug reported: I have tried installing Xubuntu and Ubuntu (both @ 6.10). /boot of either ext2 or ext3 All others xfs, but swap of course It will not continue installing, grumbling that root can not be xfs... but that is exactly why I made /boot ext3! With the Xubuntu installer: Thinking it might be ext2 related, I wipe the disk and repartitioned with ext3 as /boot. xfs still is on the /boot partition, but now ext3 is on the / partition! ;-) With the Ubuntu installer, I was trying to install over Ubuntu 5.10, so I had all partitions in place - just matched up the previous mount points. /boot was ext3 in my Ubuntu 5.10 install, so I as well left that as-was. Also refused to install.
