2009-04-05 Thread Michael Lustfield
I've been looking for one. While I'm looking, is there any chance you
could do a fresh install using Ext3 and set everything up the same way?

I do remember a bug in Ext4 that caused some desktop apps to not sync
properly, but that doesn't seem like it's the case here.

There we go... It is a known issue but not with Ext4. It sounds like
it's an issue with using gnutls as the ssl backend to the login process.

I'll add a link to this bug report when I find more information.

[Bug 354272] Re: pidgin crashed with g_log: purple_ssl_read: assertion `gsc != NULL' failed xmlnode: Error parsing xml file: Document is empty

2009-04-05 Thread Michael Lustfield
Are you at all familiar with building something from source and applying
patches. It looks like there's a patch that can potentially fix this,
but I don't have a system that I would build a patch for. That could
potentially make you want to kill me.

If this patch does fix the issue, then I can try to push it to Ubuntu.
Otherwise there's some debugging we can do with pidgin that will royally
suck - but will also give the developers significantly more to go on.

It's your choice, try to apply an existing patch for a bug that is very
close or exactly the same as what you're experiencing, or try to do more
in depth debugging.

2009-04-04 Thread Michael Lustfield
I seem to remember the idea of the installation of that package having
something to do with the problem glancing in and out of my head. I'm
going to look into this. I'll probably ignore issues with 8.04 and
prior, but I'll going to include this in some test cases and see if I
can reproduce it this way.

I do know you're not the first and I'm sure you're not the last. Just
probably the only one to have created a bug about it. A good solid
chance for some random guy like me to get their feet wet(drenched) with
trying to patch an actual bug.

2009-04-03 Thread Michael Lustfield
Update your system
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Turn off pidgin and then kill to verify
killall pidgin

Move your pidgin configuration to a different location
mv ~/.purple ~/.purple-bak

Make sure the change happened
ls -l ~/.purple-bak

Start pidgin and recreate your accounts. Start with only creating the
accounts. Play with it a little while. If everything works fine, then
continue to add any customization you've done. Do this slowly so you can
pinpoint what change kills pidgin.

Also, running pidgin from a terminal at this point is a good idea. Make
sure to report the errors you see, plus an additional 10 lines up and
all the way to the end. For instance, what you reported is helpful, but
seeing what happened before the connection timeout would be helpful as
well.

Could you remove pidgin-facebookchat and pidgin-musictracker, and redo
the profile again? May as well purge since they don't store their own
settings.

sudo apt-get remove --purge pidgin-facebookchat pidgin-musictracker

If this fixes the issue, then add only pidgin-facebookchat and try that
out. I have a hunch the issue may be in one of these packages. I'm
guessing it's most likely in pidgin-musictracker.

2009-04-03 Thread Michael Lustfield
Alrighty, this is starting to get beyond troubleshooting and I may need
to find a developer to start looking into this pretty soon.

First run this command.
sudo updmap --enable Map MinionPro.map

If it fails, then run this command
sudo find / -name MinionPro.map

Then try to install the package again using this command
sudo apt-get install -f

And as always, the output of the command is always appreciated. - oth, I
hope this fixes the issue

[Bug 354073] Re: Issues Installing texlive in 8.10

2009-04-03 Thread Michael Lustfield
This is irritating indeed. From what I'm seeing, it looks like it could
be a font that was configured to be there but isn't.

First try this,
sudo apt-get install texlive-fonts-extra texlive-fonts-recommended

Then check to see if that package will install. If it doesn't do the
last thing I mentioned again.

If that still doesn't work, then try following the instructions here:
http://carlo-hamalainen.net/blog/?p=8 under Install the MinionPro
package

Please post a terminal log of every single thing you do - even the stuff that
produces no errors. Just so we have a reference for it.

[Bug 354272] Re: pidgin crashed with g_log: purple_ssl_read: assertion `gsc != NULL' failed xmlnode: Error parsing xml file: Document is empty

2009-04-03 Thread Michael Lustfield
Don't move anything to that -bak directory again. It's there as a backup
for your original configuration.

Let's first destroy anything pidgin:
sudo apt-get remove --purge pidgin pidgin-data pidgin-facebookchat
pidgin-musictracker pidgin-otr libpurple0
rm -R ~/.purple

This should clean out any junk on your system. Next, install JUST pidgin and
it's dependencies
sudo apt-get install pidgin

Then try running things again.

If this doesn't work, then I think it's time to find an upstream
developer that knows a little bit more about what's going on. I'm
definitely getting to the end of my knowledge here...

Then: apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade
 - If errors, then please show us what they are and don't do the rest

Do these in the order and stop when you hit an error:
apt-get install tex-common texlive-doc-base texlive-base-bin texlive-common
dvipdfmx lmodern
apt-get install texlive-base
apt-get install texlive-latex-base

apt-get install latex-xcolor
apt-get install pgf
apt-get install latex-beamer
apt-get install texlive-pstricks

apt-get install texlive tipa texinfo

[Bug 346587] [NEW] Networking is constricted after making an ovpn connection

2009-03-21 Thread Michael Lustfield
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release:9.04

In Jaunty, I'm seeing an issue with network-manager. When I make a
connection to an OpenVPN server, I am able to communicate to every
system within the network. However, all of my other connections die off.
For instance, I'm unable to reach google.com.

One of the great things about OpenVPN is that I've always been able to
make the VPN connection and not worry about any active connections being
terminated.

[Bug 338596] [NEW] Bad number of steps in screen brightness on recent Sony Vaio notebooks, Intel GMA adapter

2009-03-05 Thread Michael Lustfield
Public bug reported:

This bug originates from bug 173652. (Unable to adjust screen brightness
on recent Sony Vaio notebooks, Intel GMA adapter).

The screen brightness now works, but runs through very poor steps.

Comments from the other bug may explain this best:

To be honest, with the patch I'm using in stable, I get 20 steps. I
find this just a slight tad to many. mostly because I feel it should
have a little better flow. 19 to 20 goes from I'd like this a little
darker to completely black. Perhaps 15 would be a good number?

I'll have to grab an a4 cd and check it out. For me I know it'll be a
matter of how well it works as opposed to working or not.

On Jaunty with latest updates I now get 9 steps for the backlight with the
Fn key combination.
When I installed (Alpha 3) there were only 5 steps, so some update changed
it.
9 steps (while an odd number) is working a lot better now, and much more
usable because the difference between the steps is not so drastic.
I think its working very well now.

It sounds like the 10 to 15 steps is good, my personal vote is for 15.
My other issue with what's left is that the last few steps in the
process go from slightly dark to completely dark.

I don't have the test environment at my disposal at this point but I
will get further information attached asap.

[Bug 235379] Re: PostgreSQL 8.3 server package broken

2009-02-11 Thread Michael Lustfield
** Summary changed:

- PostgreSQL 8.3 server package very incomplete (missing all of
/var/lib/postgresql/8.3)
+ PostgreSQL 8.3 server package broken

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: postgresql-8.3

Running a standard 'apt-get install postgresql' on a freshly installed
Ubuntu 8.04 server should result in a working PostgreSQL installation in
/var/lib/postgresql/8.3 with configuration files accessible from
/etc/postgresql/8.3, as described in [1]. It does not.

- $ /etc/init.d/postgresql start
-
- does nothing, nor is there any evidence of a running PostgreSQL server
- in 'top' or 'ps aux'.
-
- It seems the packages containing the PostgreSQL server are very
- incomplete. By running the above command the following packages are

- postgresql-doc_8.3.1-1_all.deb
- postgresql-doc-8.3_8.3.1-1_all.deb
-
- I believe the first two and postgresql-common_87_all.deb should contain
- the actual server and config file installations, but they don't.
- Manually extracting the package files confirms that they do not contain
- anything related to /var/lib/postgresql/8.3 or /etc/postgresql/8.3:

[Bug 235379] Re: PostgreSQL 8.3 server package very incomplete (missing all of /var/lib/postgresql/8.3)

2009-02-11 Thread Michael Lustfield
NOTE: Take my advice with a grain of salt. I'm just trying to use the
general template that I use to get back to a clean slate.

I've been reviewing this bug some more and I think the summary should be
changed.

It appears that your issue is not with an incomplete package, but rather
a broken installation.

Be sure to backup or databases appropriately. I have little experience
in postgresql so I am resorting to generic trouble shooting skills.

The first step is definitely to backup your data. [1]

Remove all pqsl data.

sudo aptitude purge cl-sql-postgresql odbc-postgresql postgresql postgresql-8.3
postgresql-common
sudo aptitude clean #This gives you a clean download slate
 * Delete all users that were created from psql as well as their data

# Do a dry run to know what you find
sudo find / -name postgresql
sudo find / -name pgsql
sudo find / -name psql

# Delete it provided you have a good backup
sudo find / -name postgresql -exec rm -Rf {} \;
sudo find / -name pgsql -exec rm -Rf {} \;
sudo find / -name psql -exec rm -Rf {} \;

Reinstall things
sudo aptitude install postgresql-8.3 postgresql-client-8.3

Finally, restore your data. [1]

[Bug 235379] Re: PostgreSQL 8.3 server package very incomplete (missing all of /var/lib/postgresql/8.3)

2009-02-10 Thread Michael Lustfield
This hasn't been monitored. With so many bugs reports and so few of them
legitimate, it's hard to keep track of things.

Could please try with 8.10 and 9.04 so we can verify if this bug still
exists or if it has been patched upstream from 8.04.

This is simply an easy way for us to know whether a bug still exists or
if it has been addressed already.

[Bug 173652] Re: Unable to adjust screen brightness on recent Sony Vaio notebooks, Intel GMA adapter

2009-02-08 Thread Michael Lustfield
To be honest, with the patch I'm using in stable, I get 20 steps. I find
this just a slight tad to many. mostly because I feel it should have a
little better flow. 19 to 20 goes from I'd like this a little darker to
completely black. Perhaps 15 would be a good number?

I'll have to grab an a4 cd and check it out. For me I know it'll be a
matter of how well it works as opposed to working or not.

[Bug 68072] Re: There should be screenshots in package descriptions

2009-01-08 Thread Michael Lustfield
If you consider the space and time it already takes to keep track of
what is already being kept track of - adding an image to each would take
a massively larger amount. I for one one never consider using apt again
if we were pushed into it.

The download of these updates would take an extremely long time as well
- especially around release time

On the other hand... A synaptic addon that downloaded the packages and
stored them in it's own area would be abother approach that sounds a lot
more intelligent.

Just my two cents.
