[Bug 29622]

2022-04-07 Thread Jim Michaels
I have these problems.
I was going to put in a bug report (found this one) "not using 0.5 print
margins, multipage large table overwriting print headers and footers".
it's set with fit-to-page.

[Bug 237941]

2014-09-02 Thread Jim Michaels
I would add that (for organization purposes), having some sort of
checkbox or something to show the list of all folders in a clump up top
would help bookmark organization for the user. I know this is something
I want. finding folder names would also be VERY helpful for same.

my suggestion combined with someone else's is in addition to the + button was
to right click on a tab and have a context menu items:
insert tab &Left
insert tab &Right

I like the flexibility of th4e other person's bug report, and I like the
context menu thing, which also could possibly be made available via the
keyboard as a hotkey(?).

[Bug 1053199] [NEW] ubuntu doesn't install past version 10.10

2012-09-19 Thread Jim Michaels
Public bug reported:

installed 11.10 desktop i386 and 12.04 desktop i386.
in both cases, I am choosing custom partition configuration because of existing
NTFS partitions which need to be kept.
I even made a separate ext4 or btrfs partition for grub.

WHAT I GOT:
in 11.10 desktop i386, grub boot gives fatal error trying to install vboot
loader no matter what you do. 32-bit AMD system. my guess is nobody tested
that platform. what really scared me was when I set one partition's mount point
to /svr and when I clicked continue, ALL were set to /svr (or /srv, whatever it
was you select)! could not click back button to fix, it was installing files.
ugh.

in 12.04 desktop i386, installation fails with error.
please fix.

WHAT I EXPECTED:
I expected the installations to install to the ext4 or btrfs partition I
selected and formatted and even setup a mount point for (depending on the OS
chosen, have also had no success with mint-mate-cinnamon-12)

[Bug 780128] Re: static audio echo when playing files with vlc

2012-02-11 Thread bennett michaels
SAME PROBLEM !!!
I downgraded back to 11.04 and there is no problem with the audio...
however...when I tried 11.10 and the new 12.04...the problem was quite
evident...
the audio would "lag" or be "doubled"...almost a slight delay happening...
much too annoying to watch any video...I tried all video players available...
same audio problem would occur...
anyone come up with a viable solution ?
Would sure appreciate help here...as I would much like to upgrade...
  cheers...

upgrade failed because some process like apt was already running.
so I booted the cd.
first it didn't recognize my video mode. so I pressed Enter through everything
and it did text mode install.
then I got

installation step failed
so I presses Enter again to continue
and picked install grub 2
grob failed to install.

overall, it was a colossal failure.

[Bug 643318] Re: no-ACPI win98 box shuts down, leaves 4 dots screen

2010-09-28 Thread Jim Michaels
I have to allocate money and upgrade the machine's cd-rom drive. like I
said, it's an old windows 98 box. I will let you know when I can get
this upgraded.

I don't like this, since I just finished installing and updating ubuntu
and a installing a lot of needed software to make it usable and it took
a week of constant uptime or more.

some first couple of updates would cause me to need to use gparted to
check the filesystem and apply (fix it).

now things are fine.

after the last update, the shutdown screen changed. now the background behind
the 4 dots is no longer graphic, but text. personally I think this is an
improvement. but it still doesn't say "turn off" yet.
If you are sure you still want me to zap my OS, then OK. you are right, those
are not cd's, those are DVD's. I think I can get a used DVD-ROM for $5 from a
computer recycling center.

[Bug 643318] [NEW] no-ACPI win98 box shuts down, leaves 4 dots screen

2010-09-20 Thread Jim Michaels
Public bug reported:

I installed 10.04 on an HP Pavilion 6530, an older windows 98 box(can't replace
the cmos battery).
Always when I shut down I hear the disks chatter and then park and turn off,
but the monitor still shows the ubuntu "4 dots" screen.

what would be more appropriate is if ACPI is not available on machines
like this, if that is the problem indeed, is after shutting down
everything, to present a screen of "please turn off the computer". like
windows 98 did.

it only has a cd drive and a wired internet connection for outside
access.

Actually, to solve the problem for me I copied all the data to another hard
disk. Then cleared all the md array information from the 3 drives. After that
created a new array and since then it assembles correct at boot times.
It seems that the newer md-version are somehow incompatible with arrays created
wit some former versions of itself. My array was existing for several years
when this issue occours.

[Bug 390116] Re: new feature request: easy partitioning, formatter

2009-10-01 Thread Jim Michaels
ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso
I think - I lost the contents of a hard drive, and this is what I have in my
linux-distros directory somehow. my cd's are put away in boxes now.

it is quite possible some other kind os partition, such as
fat32+freeloader were on the hard disk as I did testing with reactos on
the same machine while I had it. another possibility is that I did a
complete disk zero first using a diskwipe program.

If ubuntu rejected the FAT32 partition, that may be the reason for going
haywire.

setup immediately threw me into a shell prompt for the partitioning, so
I had to figure out what to do. the only commands I was given hints
about were some really hard-to-use ones I don't happen to remember,
probably fdisk or something like that. if there was something else,

By "needs packaging" I just meant that that is the standard title for
these bugs. They should still be filed against Ubuntu like this bug.
Check out https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.tag=needs-
packaging to see some examples. File a separate one for each package not
already included in Ubuntu, link them here, and hopefully a packager can
package them! :)

you are right. I checked my profile to see whether the bug posted, and
it wasn't listed, so I thought it didn't get through, so I posted a 2nd
time.

still isn't listed (why?).

also, there is no project or distribution named "needs-packaging". I am
surprised that by now nobody has created one.
should I create one?

I was told in one of the reply emails I got to re-submit the bug(s)
under needs-packaging, but this time I include the license info and
eliminate some redundant packages from the list, and break up the list
as separate bugs.

[Bug 390116] [NEW] new feature request: easy partitioning, formatter

2009-06-20 Thread Jim Michaels
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt-cdrom-setup

I would like a better partitioning setup. cylinder numbers, disk sizes
and a calculator and a sheet of paper to map things out is not easy to
use. basically, you should be able to do something akin to select a
drive and choose install.

I think it should
1. find out disk sizes of all your disks, and disk identities, and show them.
2. give you a good guesstimate of how much space should be allocated for swap
(I like 3GB or 4GB for desktop) and usr (all the rest), or if your disk is
smaller than a certain sizse, use percentages and complain if there is not
enough disk space.
3. it should be as easy as saying yes this disk is what I want.
4. you should be able to easily partition other drives as well as an option.
for example, create ext2 filesystem on this drive and use all space, or, create
ext2 filesystem on this drive and use x GB of space. and keep doing this until
you are finished partitioning drives.
5. after doing an APPLY to the partitioning, partitioning a space should also
format the space automatically. tell them to go for coffee. should take at
least 1/2 hr. (unless there is a quick format option)
6. choose an ubuntu install partition.
7. put ubuntu on.

it is possible that you can use a queue of commands for processing
similar to what http://sf.net/projects/gparted uses in order to apply
the partitioning changes. you can use this to set up and knock down
tilt pins in an array of disk objects, each of which can have a vector
or queue of partitions. the tilt pins determine whether or not a disk
is processed or not. or it can be as simple as checking the disk
object's queue/vector size to see if there is anything in it to process.
STL&C++ anyone?

If this is too complicated, even being able to do partition and format
on the fly would be nice!

this will probably involve writing some utilities in C, and some shell
scripts, *maybe* C++.

needed:
- program to discover disk sizes, /dev path, and identities of all hard disks
available.
- command-line disk partitioning utility (fdisk?). should be able to query
partitions,
add partitions, all from command-line. can be cylinder-based.
- command-line format utility. (dd?)
...or you can write it all in C or C++ or whatever language if you want.

2007-04-24 Thread Jonathan Michaels
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 36252 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36252

I hope this offers a clue as to what's going on:

I have two external drives, one ejects properly, the other does not.

The smaller drive is set up as two EXT3 partitions, both under 100GB. This
ejects without problem.
The larger drive is set up as a single 458 GB EXT3 partition. Viewing the
System Monitor/File Systems I can see it briefly unmount after ejecting it then
it immediatly remounts stating "cannot eject volume".

The workaround noted above did not fix the problem for me. Having the
problem on a 500gb usb drive.

In case there's any confusion as to whether this is a bug or a
"feature", I assure you that that not being able to safely unmount a
drive is a fairly serious bug.

This was not a problem until a few weeks ago, several upgrades into the

[Bug 107115] Re: log out or switch user results in crash

2007-04-20 Thread Jonathan Michaels
I can confirm the black screen on log out using the resricted driver
with an ati radeon xpress 200m.

Editing /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf so AlwaysRestartServer=true is a valid
workaround. I cannot speak to issues with hibernation but can also
second the fact that this is a bug that was introduced some time during
the Feisty beta, as logging out did work once without a workaround.

For what it's worth, I suggest this is an important bug, as the ati
radeon xpress 200m is an all too common card and the problem a real
show-stopper.

Not sure what fixed it or even when, but the memory leak is gone now. Thanks

It APPEARS no longer to be an issue over the last week or so.

I'd feel more comfortable if I can keep an eye on it for another few days
before declaring it a squashed bug.

Thanks.

will attach the logs through the web page.

I am trying beagled without arguments now and will get back to you.

Looking through the logs I noticed that in addition to the backends I
ran in earlier tests, beagled reports starting the following:

Starting backend: 'IndexingService'
Starting backend: 'Tomboy'
Starting backend: 'Labyrinth'
Starting backend: 'Blam'

Re: [Bug 87198] Re: beagled uses >250 Megs RAM when Idle

2007-02-28 Thread Jonathan Michaels
Haven't had any luck narrowing the culprits; when I run only one of the 5
backends you specified at a time the memory bug doesn't come up.

I've attached a copy of the most current log file. Looking through it, I
noticed that it complained about being unable to find EvolutionDataServer. I
did double-check and it is installed. Not sure if that's a clue.

There are additional logs that I have not included (console, exceptions,
etc.). Please let me know if they would be of use.

Cheers.

Re: [Bug 87198] Re: beagled uses >250 Megs RAM when Idle

2007-02-23 Thread Jonathan Michaels
After 5 1/2 hours of light, intermittent usage beagled is up to 305
megs.

Virtual: 381.8
Resident: 315.6
Writable: 304.4
Shared: 11.2
Memory: 3104.4

I won't bother including the output for beagle-info as it looks pretty much
identical to what I've previously posted.

Please let me know if there is any other information that I can supply.

Thanks,

2007-02-23 Thread Jonathan Michaels
In the 3 hours and 15 minutes since I booted this morning, I've seen beagled
memory usage slowly inch it's way up to the following:

Virtual: 249.2
Resident: 193.7
Writable: 182.8
Shared: 11.3
Memory: 182.8

I haven't noticed any ties between specific apps or activities and a climb
in memory usage but, rather, a slow but steady progression. Once memory
usage goes up it never goes down again.

Past experience tells me that, on this system, memory usage will eventually
top out at around 280 megs.

Re: [Bug 87198] Re: beagled uses >250 Megs RAM when Idle

2007-02-23 Thread Jonathan Michaels
The 280 MB number was taken from the "Memory" column of the System Monitor
utility.

I have rebooted to find beagled using 35 megs at first. In the last hour of
normal system usage I've watched that number climb up to 84 megs. I am
keeping a close eye on the number now to see if I can determine what makes
it climb (Crawling, firefox or other plugin usage, etc.).

I will send more details as soon as I have collected additional relevant
data.

[Bug 87198] beagled uses >250 Megs RAM when Idle

2007-02-22 Thread Jonathan Michaels
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: beagle

Appears to be different than bug # 33341 (now closed) and #69752
(dealing with spikes).

Using Feisty with beagle version 0.2.16-0ubuntu4.

I am not seeing heavy CPU and memory spikes as with previous releases,
but a steady and very high RAM requirement of between 250 - 300 Megs -
about 30% of total available physical RAM.

Beagled is otherwise working properly, beagle-info --status reports
that all is well. The problem has been evident since at least Herd 1 of
Feisty.

This bug has been preventing me from using Edgy. I propose that the

The bcm43xx/fwcutter solution is not a replacement for a working
