One easy change that seems to largely fix the problem for me is to increase the "Edge Reveal Timeout" to 1000 (one second). This pretty much eliminates Unity jumping open when I don't want it, at the price of a small, occasional wait. The main bad thing about this is that it's poor user interface for new users. My bug (885684) got merged into this one even though it's not quite the same thing. Specifically, I don't have a problem with requiring strong passwords, as long as the requirement is that they be strong in terms of bits of information, and that the user is allowed to meet this requirement as they please. This is currently occurring on about 40% of resumes for me (ubuntu 10.04), on a Dell Inspiron 1420N (sold with ubuntu). Just to clarify, for me, I always see either behavior (a), or I see (b) followed by (c). Over several ubuntu releases, it seems like this problem has disappeared and reappeared, perhaps multiple times. Although it's fairly easy to work around once you realize what's happening, for me it's probably ubuntu's most obvious flaky behavior. I'm not that crazy about code that relies on $PWD, either, but nonetheless there's quite a bit of it out there that does. The reason I'm thinking of this is a bug is that virtually every environment in which you can run a program under Linux will include a $PWD variable, and similarly virtually every program that does a fork() will pass that variable across into the new environment. As you note, if you run 'sudo sh', you get an intervening shell that will set up its own environment. If you do the not uncommon 'sudo somecommand', though, there is no intervening shell, and you're getting what sudo sets up. I agree that PWD probably shouldn't be passed through unmodified (even though it's difficult to see how this could be exploited). Rather, PWD should just be set to the current getcwd(), which is what users and code will generally expect. If it does, this is a bug, it should be fixed, and probably that won't be very difficult to do. If $PWD is being left out of the default sudo environment for a specific technical reason, then this is not a bug (nor a wishlist item). If this is the case, it would be nice to know what that reason is. I believe the default Ubuntu configuration should provide the $PWD variable in the 'sudo' environment. This is a fairly important variable to be missing, whereas there are lots of other variables of dubious value (e.g., LS_COLORS) that are present, so I think it would make sense to keep it. This isn't hypothetical, by the way. I discovered this because someone had put a line like DEST=$(PWD)/ in a Makefile. I'm also seeing this (w/Inspiron 1420), starting recently. I guess in the past it's worked most of the time--I suppose 2-10% failure might be what I'm seeing, too. magaio: One reason is because the makers of all of this hardware are doing a half-assed job of sticking with the standards (when they exist) and do a lot of corner-cutting. They can make it work anyway under Windows, fixing things in the drivers, but this doesn't work under Linux, unless they specifically undertake to make sure it works there, which they generally don't bother to do. In the former case, pulseaudio uses 10% CPU steadily, vs maybe 1-2% in the latter. I'm not sure how to diagnose this, but I will attach two 'pulseaudio -v -v' files for the two cases. These seem to indicated that in the ogg123 case less latency is being chosen (used? requested? planned for?). It looks to me like both programs are using the alsa interface. I guess the desired behavior here is for whatever ogg123 is doing to lead to the same good behavior that sox is getting. I also had this problem, which I worked around using 'alsamixer -c0' and unmuting things. This is particularly pernicious because the default sound control that Jaunty provides doesn't have these mute buttons, at least for my hardware, nor are they apparent when I run just 'alsamixer'. (My hardward is a Dell Inspiron 1420N laptop, which apparently has HDA Intel STAC 92xx Analog hardware (?)). My original explanation of this problem was unfortunately somewhat confused, and emphasized the problem I'm having with my hardware (an Inspiron 1420N, ironically chosen in an attempt to avoid such problems). My apologies for my confusion. Let's rewind and assume that my hardware works perfectly--the power button is only "pressed" when I press it, and suspend and hibernate work fine. Now, I press the power button and this "Shut Down the Computer" dialog comes up. On my computer, some of the time it starts iconified for some reason, but again, let us assume the best and say that it always comes up front and center. Now, *why* is this dialog here? As far as I can see, it's here because on the System:Preferences:Power Management:General:Actions:When the Power Button is Pressed menu, I have chosen the option "Ask me". Thus, I've indicated that when I press the power button, I don't necessarily know whether I'd like to (say) reboot my machine or instead suspend it-- two *very* different actions with grave implications for everything going on on the machine. So, this dialog box is the UI carrying out my previously specified wishes. Except that this dialog box is unlike every dialog box we've ever seen in one important way: if the user doesn't choose an option in 60 seconds, the dialog box makes some choice for the user! This is a complete surprise! I've never seen anything like this in all of Unix- dom, nor on a Mac or Windows box, for that matter. >From a UI usability perspective, this behavior is simply outrageous. The user has chosen what he wants to happen, and the UI is then explicitly ignoring his wishes and doing something else that may very well cause work to be lost, etc. By itself, I think that that constitutes a major UI bug. Sometimes it works correctly, but other times it would immediately hibernate while waking from suspend--then I could wake from hibernate and keep going. At a later wake from suspend, I actually got the "ask me" dialog, which suggests to me that somehow the power button is being "pressed" (i.e., not by me) on wake, or something else is happening internally that is triggering this. If I cancel the "ask me" dialog, everything is fine. But on at least one occasion I didn't get the chance, either because the dialog is buried, or because it pops up at the last moment and immediately times out (not sure which). Beyond this, sometimes the wake just fails completely and I end up being booted from scratch. Not sure if that case is connected to the other or something separate. I'm not sure exactly where to start to try to diagnose all of this. Here's a backtrace. It's a hang, but I'm not sure it's exactly the same hang (the notable difference is that in this case, the app won't repaint and the CPU is spinning, whereas before I think it was repainting and sleeping--maybe that's not a meaningful difference, though). Public bug reported: In the most recent intrepid update (i.e., a package changed within the last couple of weeks), the default window manager is getting the screen size wrong somehow, which is causing significant problems, because windows are being placed off of the screen. The attached partial screenshot demonstrates the problem. In particular, the five-panel workspace switcher at the bottom shows the correct dimensions, whereas the transitory workspace display is showing them wrong. Perhaps this is because it's not noticing that my screen is rotated 90 degrees. Also, when I hit the "maximize" button on any window, the behavior is wrong in a way difficult to describe. The height of the window is reduced to the width (approx, I'm guessing) of the display, and the edges become undraggable. If I reclick, the size is not restored, and I have to manually drag it out to full size again. Public bug reported: After upgrading to Ibex yesterday, upon reboot an fsck was performed on all of my disks. The messages displayed, however, led me to believe that the machine had hung. Specifically, the splash screen switched to a text console, some fsck messages were shown, and at the very bottom, a log messages along the lines of "now mounting swap disks [OK]" appeared. And then nothing. (The first time this happened, I switched terminals using Alt-F1 and then could not get back using Alt-F2, adding to the impression that the system was hung.) Because the fsck message was not the final one, I was fooled into thinking that the fsck's had all completed, when in fact this was not the case. Somehow the log messages need to change so that while an fsck is ongoing, a message to that effect is the bottom one on the screen. Or, at least, at the point of the original fsck, an expanded message should appear like "This fsck is proceeding in the background and may take many minutes. If your system seems to hang at some point prior to the login prompt, it's probably not actually hung, but rather this fsck is still proceeding." I finally got to try this, though it was on a fresh installation of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, rather than the original machine. Unfortunately, with this new intel package (2.3.1-1), the server hangs up right after being rotated (the screen is drawn and the cursor "works", and the cursor bitmap changes as it's moved around the screen, but beyond that, everything's frozen). So, at this point, this seems to be a larger bug, which is that the Intel X server isn't stable under rotation. It mostly was for the version I had (which I unfortunately didn't make not of, probably 2.2.X), but it's not in 2.3.1. Playing with it some more, I'm able to reproduce the problem with the totem application by itself, with a local mp3 file. It seems to hang the rotated X server *some* of the time when visualization is turned on and never when visualization is turned off. Without rotation, it does not hang, but the "goom" visualization does not show anything, whereas the monoscope visualization does, if that matters. The problem seems not to occur without rotation. Disabling visualization appears to have no effect (the display still blanks). The machine is pingable after the display blanks--I suspect that it's still running, except for the X display being unusable. When I clicked on the link without rotation, a totem plugin started up, but I don't think the mp3 itself began playing, and I saw no graphics other than the minimal UI (this was prior to disabling visualization). I think it was probably just sitting there waiting for me to press the "play" button. So, it seems like visualiation is not the cause, but rather whatever basic X things the totem plugin does. (?) More background: Rotation on this display didn't work correctly until this version of Ubuntu. Previously it'd sort of work, but there was lots of screen crap and the server would crash after being used for a bit. Also, if I'm on a rotated display and I use the "Screen Resolution" widget to try to unrotate it, the display goes into a flashing unusable state until reboot. Once the screen is blank, it appears that the machine is still running, and I *think* a C-A-Backspace is resetting the X server, but it won't come back. Nothing I do short of a reboot will restore the display. I'm operating this display rotated left 90 degrees, which is a feature that only really started working in Ubuntu 8, so perhaps that's involved. Attached is an X server log that is (I believe) of the attempted restart, which fails. The notable lines at the end are (WW) intel(0): PRB0_CTL (0x0001f801) indicates ring buffer enabled (WW) intel(0): PRB0_HEAD (0x0100895c) and PRB0_TAIL (0x8988) indicate ring buffer not flushed (WW) intel(0): Existing errors found in hardware state. Apparently this stymies the X server. I tried booting with *both* hard drives disconnected, to test whether the (software) RAID filesystem present on them was causing my problems. The first time I tried it (no break=top, no "modprobe piix"), it booted up! Always skeptical, I tried it again, and it failed, just as before. I did try the piix thing, but to no avail. So, from this I deduce: 1. It's not md0 (RAID) related, and in fact it's not related to disk contents at all. 2. It's intermittent. Either it's a race, or possibly its affected by previous boots of the machine (i.e., hardware state retained across warm boots). Pretty sure it's a race. 3. At least on my machine, the piix fix is not absolutely required for a successful boot, as I've seen it work without. I *did* see some ATA error messages in the log, during the failed attempts. Something about bad status (0x7F). I suppose that that could just be a symptom of the disconnected hds, or perhaps a separate issue that the piix thing would fix. Notably, there seems to be a pause of maybe 20 seconds or so while it seems to be looking for devices. I get the first prompt because of "break=top", do a "modprobe piix" which causes a short barrage of IDE-related messages that look correct to me, then an "exit". At that point there are several more pages of messages, and then a new prompt. (Actually some messages appear after the prompt--I'm assuming that those were cached by syslog/whatever.) The last non-log message is something like "Begin mount root file system". The log messages seem consistent with modprobe'ing to make a root device available. In this case, though, I don't see why it'd be doing that, since the root filesystem is on the cdrom and obviously already available. The final messages are from the IDE code, and a USB message about my mouse. None of this looks even remotely like an error message to me. The only thing that sticks out in my mind is that this system already has Linux on it, and has two disks with RAID partitions on them. I suppose maybe the boot code could be tripping over that, though I don't see why it'd care what was on the disks at all at boot time. I have a system that generally runs Linux/Ubuntu fine, but the 7.04 live CD fails, just as described here. I tried the 'modprobe piix' fix, but this didn't work for me. The system has a SCSI as well as IDE interface, but there are no SCSI drives attached. It has 2 IDE hard drives and an IDE CD-ROM. I tried disconnecting one of the hard drives, but this didn't really help either. Oddly, though, somewhere in the midst of trying the various combinations, I did see the machine boot. Didn't work a second time, though, which means either the problem is intermittent, or I misremembered the config. Anyway, is there any progress on figuring out why this is failing? Hi Luca, This article from LWN was the best coverage I could find of what's changed. I guess looking at it it doesn't jump out as a major difference. I think the documentation is much improved, and the confusing "update index" command has mostly been replaced by simpler things. If anyone told me they were interested in git, I would strongly recommend that they compile a new version, rather than using a 1.4 version. On a laptop, an upgrade from a vanilla LTS installation to 6.10 (via
update-manager -c) hangs, apparently during upgrade/install of evms.
Below are some relevant lines from ps. I don't believe I've done
anything unusual on this box that would affect the kernel/etc, aside
from installing the updates that are suggested via that little asterisk
icon.
I "solved" this problem by killing the thermal process. The update
proceeded, then hung again during the install/upgrade of powernowd and
another package. I think these are probably caused by the first failure
with evms/thermal.
My laptop is a Pavilion N5240, which is fairly old (circa 1999?), if
that matters.
I'll have to submit this before the upgrade finishes, as I'm on the box
being upgraded, so I'm not sure how this'll turn out.
