[Bug 244050] [NEW] cannot turn off program autostart on ipod connection

2008-06-29 Thread Mike McWay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

I'm trying to disable autostarting rhythmbox or banshee when connecting
my ipod. However this behavior continues after disabling it in 2
different places.

first of all the original place to disable this has diasappeared. used
to exist in System Preferences Removable Drives and Media

I was able to find a tutorial that led me to another default program
that did list media players and disabled autostart there (forget the
program, but was exactly like Removable Drives and Media with more
devices)

I then also disabled the functionality in gconf (desktop gnome
volume_manager) and unchecked autoipod

both of these listed rhythmbox as the default however I keep having
Banshee launched when inserting my ipod. There however is no option in
banshee to set this behavior and checking with them they don't even
offer it, so it must still be a gnome-volume-manager bug.

is there a way to see what is initiating the autostart?

[Bug 239294] [NEW] accidental usb disconnect doesnt unmount

2008-06-11 Thread Mike McWay
Public bug reported:

if i accidentally remove my external usb drive without unmounting it
first, Ubuntu never responds by unmounting it and the icon stays on my
desktop. Therefore when i remount the drive, i then have 2 on my desktop
by the same name. Before a message would come up about unsafe removal
and the drive would be removed, but this is no longer happening.

2008-06-11 Thread Mike McWay
yes i'm aware of the correct way. accidental unplugging happens though
and it used to be handled gracefully with a warning and unmounting the
drive in Gutsy. doesn't seem to be working since moving to Hardy.

2008-04-02 Thread Mike McWay
tried the solution in the last comment and removed all the mount options
for vfat under gconf system/storage/default_options/vfat and everything
works fine now, although is that a proper solution?

original mount_options:
[shortname=mixed,uid=,utf8,umask=077,exec,usefree]

decided to add the options back to see if it stopped working again but it still
works perfectly

will comment back if something changes, very strange

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2008-02-11 Thread Mike McWay
personally bootchart won't do anything for me since the problem is not
on booting but on gnome login. I believe someone above was able to make
it work all the way through the desktop loading, but i don't think i
have the technical skills to make that work. If there is an easier way
that you know of to analyze the gnome login please let me know and i
would be glad to find the problem. however, until that time Gutsy will
continue to login to gnome in 2-3min for me.

hoping a clean install of Hardy will make this all go away in 2 short
months

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-12-07 Thread Mike McWay
thats one way to do itmaybe devs will realize how annoying this can
be.

this bug needs instructions on how to approach self-diagnosing the
problem. many people have removed all applets with no results.
sweetsinse seemed to do an extremely thorough job and suggested it may
be a problem with the compiz script used by ubuntu. has this been
explored by any developers knowledgable in this area?

looking at bootchart doesn't mean anything to me, if i go through the
trouble of patching and installing it to analyze login will someone take
a look? first though, how do i do that?

I for one use both compiz and deskbar as i have since edgy, and i've
still noticed a good 15-30sec jump in login time since moving from
feisty. removing them doesnt seem to change much, but when you're
talking about 45sec login vs 60sec its still waaa too lng.

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-12-07 Thread Mike McWay
to the contrary, YES, switching to other distros also running Gnome 2.20
has made a big difference to some of the users above. I believe one
person tried Arch linux with more panel aplets and still had 10sec less
than Ubuntu. Then as you saw, anibal switched to Mandriva and seems to
not have the problem anymore. So to both Sebastien and Ricardo, YES it
does make a difference. this is an Ubuntu specific problem, How do I
help?

have not tried the feisty kernel, but do not have the time right now to
test that

[Bug 91128] Re: Files ending with jpg must be renamed jpeg to open

2007-12-06 Thread Mike McWay
there is a solution here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=589861
alternatively, it should be ok just to erase the file it tells you to fix
(~/.local/share/mime/globs), anything there is autocreated in the first place.

i just went ahead and erased the whole '.local' folder to make sure it
went away and everything works fine here now. some personal settings
may be lost, but easily fixed. also lost album covers, could have left
those.

[Bug 157306] Re: greyed options in right click context menu

2007-11-21 Thread Mike McWay
1. insert a cd or usb drive and make so it appears on desktop
2. right click on it
3. Notice Options in menu (13)
Open
Browse Folder
Cut
Copy
Make Link
Rename...
Move to Trash
Stretch Icon
Restore Icon's Original Size
Copy Disc
Create Archive
Eject
Properties
4. Notice Options actually available to select (7) (i.e. not greyed out)
Open
Browse
Stretch Icon
Copy Disc
Create Archive
Eject
Properties

therefore only 7 of 13 options are selectable, yet all are displayed.
Why display them if they are not possible? It clutters the menu

My problems with this:
1. Open Browse Folder - currently do the same thing. For audio CD/DVD,
Open should play the content in preferred application. Otherwise shouldn't be
listed.
2. Cut - you can't Cut a drive. shouldn't be in the menu at all
2. Copy - should be available and should copy the contents of the media where
ever the user chooses to paste it
3. Make Link Rename - not useful in this instance
4. Restore Icon Size - why display an option to restore icon size before
anything has been done to the icon.

anything else?

[Bug 151797] remounting usb adds _ at the end after bad removal

2007-10-11 Thread Mike McWay
Public bug reported:

I have a quirky usb drive that when tugged the wrong way restarts,
registering as unplugging it in Ubuntu (a bad removal)...then proceeds
to remount as if it were plugged back in. everything would be fine
except on remount the drive gets labeled with an underscore
(/media/drivename_) thus messing up links to pictures through f-spot and
music through banshee.

i have to reboot in order to get it to remount without the underscore.
would be great if this didnt happen.

side note: if the usb drive does get removed by me without ejecting and the
warning is clicked it seems to remount fine
BUT if the warning is still up when i plug back in the underscore appears at
the end

[Bug 44686] Re: Pressing multimedia buttons on laptop with lid closed should not turn on screen

2007-04-05 Thread Mike McWay
bug still relevant in 7.04 Feisty Fawn

don't think this is a screensaver problem as much as a power-management
problem. When I look at the Power History it shows that closing the lid
initiates DPMS Off but when pressing the multimedia buttons the computer
changes to DPMS On, turning on screen. only later when i open my laptop
lid does it show that the laptop lid is opened. unlike the original
post though, my screen eventually goes black as set to do, although not
sure about timing.

basically,
DPMS should not be set On when lid is down on laptop and multimedia buttons are
pressed.

different behavior may be desired on desktop such that the screen does
come on when keys are pressed, but on a laptop as long as the lid is
closed the screen should not be initiated until opened
