[Bug 882147] Re: overlayfs does not implement inotify interfaces correctly
@Alf Gaida Most ppl can't read, it's unfortunate. To communicate with ppl one must repeat themselves like an advertiser a 100 times, no a 1000 times is not even enough. Computers read vary well and what's more is if you adjust your phrasing slightly enough times eventually you'll get total obedience. Thus communicate with humans repetitively even past the point where the audience thinks that your actions are argumentative is the only way I've ever known how to get even the most basic understanding across. I'll keep pointing out that ---disable-inotify is a good solution and merits being made into a feature. Plus there are a multitude of ways to fix this and there is a deficit in only perusing one single-mindedly. The compliance of a single person is irrelevant. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/882147 Title: overlayfs does not implement inotify interfaces correctly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/coreutils/+bug/882147/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 882147] Re: overlayfs does not implement inotify interfaces correctly
Notice the comment #30 above: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/882147/comments/30 Also note that there is some confusion about known behavior of released kernels. I suggest that if a kernel is released and it's select() call does not behave appropriately that every application that uses select() should be patched to detect if it's running under such a kernel, though there are other opinions. For example the kernel will detect known problems with FPUs/CPUs and handle these appropriately, such should be the way with applications and released kernel APIs.

[Bug 1007866] Re: System mode: SHM avaliblity.
Cool. I think the safe way to do it is much more complicated than just turning on the existing SHM vector. From what I understand it should work like so... Client connect to stream or dgram socket and (post auth) establishes that both parties believe they are on he same host and server offers to create SHM buffers for the client to use. The client may close the socket once SHM is setup, if it's done. Server should be able to query the socket, worst case using ident, to see what user is on the other end and set perms appropriately. The server might trust the client to supply perms and does so while applying a mask for sanity purposes. SHM buffers are per socket connection/pid and a single pid can ask for more than one, with some upper limit defined to prevent DOS. This adds more commands into the PA server and client, but I feel that both modes would benefit from a more robust SHM system. Having more than a single thread(client/server threads makes for a minimum of two) introduces locking concerns that just add latency. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1007866 Title: System mode: SHM avaliblity. [Bug 991493] Re: Missing llvm-config alternatives.
The alternatives system is a high level tool meant to unify this process across all applications. It should be a solution flexible enough to cover and even support any application level tools. If you see cause for the alternatives system to make calls into llvm-defaults please go ahead and add that feature to the tool. My advice would be to replace llvm-defaults with a wrapper around the update-alternatives tool, this would seem to be easier than having the update-alternatives tool call the llvm-defaults tool. For generic problems that affect many applications it's important that applications do not construct individual solutions! This puts a heavy burden on the users to learn each applications system. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/991493 Title: Missing llvm-config alternatives. [Bug 991493] Re: Missing llvm-config alternatives.
* It is going to be a pain to maintain and hard to use for users. The alternatives system was designed/built/implemented to address these issues. It's when this system is NOT used that multiple package versions become a pain to maintain and hard to use for users. If you've a better idea or a problem with the alternatives system you should open a bug against that package. [Bug 882147] Re: overlayfs does not implement inotify interfaces correctly
I don't see the logic in having tail depend on this know buggy kernel feature, while avoiding dependencies on non-documented features of tail on a liveCD. ...It makes more sense to me that we depend on a nominally useful feature add instead of depending on code that always works and perhaps luck. IMHO there will always be a few bugs and there should always be by-passes to allow for working around them. [Bug 991493] Re: Missing llvm-config alternatives.
If you don't understand why, then there is no point in you not providing an alternatives in the package(s). The only reason for not using alternatives would be to force your viewpoints onto your users, which you should be doing even in cases were you are absolutely positive doing this would break things. [Bug 991493] Re: Missing llvm-config alternatives.
What is the overall solution, wouldn't that include users as well as packagers? You seem to be only thinking of packagers, you'll have to understand that you shouldn't do that when making packages. You want packagers to do X, does that mean you are going to ignore the site administrators? Alternatives is the solution for site administrators to be able to make the correct decision for there needs and the needs of there users on that system. By not providing alternatives you are forcing every site to be identical and that's very broad effecting every system with these packages installed. Thinking that you would be able to make the correct choice for everyone is what package maintainers should do, however in this case you'll need to implement alternatives because a few sites will need to be able to alter your decisions.
It's sad that this alternative should be set by the user running ./configure. However in most cases that is the site admin so there is a much smaller set of users who would be effected, they would have to ask an admin to adjust the alternatives for there build. This discussion has only partly to do with cases that have the option to depend on packages. [Bug 991493] Re: Missing llvm-config alternatives.
I think you misunderstand the alternatives system. It's used for things that are much more different then simply ABI or API changes. It selected completed different applications, Unity VS Gnome VS KDE. The show stopper for alternatives is at X vs console applications, now if llvm-3.2 was a console app and llvm-3.1 was an X app then yes alternatives would seem inappropriate. However I'd say try and see if there is a problem, you can always have an alternative for the x and console only variants. [Bug 1132541] [NEW] GL games cause GPU softreset, xorg-edgers and oibaf graphics-drivers.
Public bug reported: Following the instructions: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze The most annoying bug/issue is that after the soft reset the mouse cursor is invisible. If this were fixed I would be most pleased. As for the overall issue this happens whenever a game is running and can happen while on another workspace from the game. There is no particular game spot that triggers this bug, however there is a separate bug where rendering stops for a few seconds after picking up gold for the first time after a long pause, watching videos, in Diablo III/wine. This separate bug is not a reset, just a frame that takes a long time to draw. The window manager is xfwm4 and the videos are playing in Flash(Hulu) and AFAIK that's not accelerated until recently that is I'm sure Hulu is not accelerated even though the Flash player now supports hardware acceleration. I'd like to point out that the above page does not indicate what package to file a bug against. As for packages for user-space I've only ever used xorg-edgers combined with oibaf graphics-drivers. However I did try the 3.8.0-996-generic kernel and I must say it was a pain to undo all of my overlay filesystems, please consider including the overlay filesystem in future builds! The results are the same with the current kernel. This had started after an upgrade about a week ago so I'll attach my dpkg logs for you to review. Cheers! Have you experienced just one lockup, or have you had a series of these lockups? If you've had several, how often does it occur? Every few hours? Once or twice a day? Couple times a week? Several, can happen multiple times in a row or can happen about once every five minutes. As indecated it can happen even when the GL application is on another work space. Shortly after upgrading Under what conditions does it seem most likely to reproduce? D. None of the Above, I've previously explained so please accept this answer. I'm sure you want more information, please consider beefing up the above URL... At the vary least indicate what package these bugs should be files against. No, if a kernel is released with some behavior then applications must be made to cope with that behavior(if only for the range or kernels release with this feature). Tail does not cope with the features facing a released kernel and this is in it self a big, separate from that of the kernel having a given feature. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/882147 Title: overlayfs does not implement inotify interfaces correctly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/882147/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 882147] Re: overlayfs does not implement inotify interfaces correctly
Why bother with inotify: The is the huge problem with community driven software. Performance is always given the right of way, stability and usefulness are not universally considered important. If there is a *single situation where a feature doesn’t function then every application that makes use of this feature needs to either exit with error or handle a warning. This bug is about When using tail on the liveCD some updates are not reported., not about the lack of inotify support. The lack of inotify is a different bug, the issue here is that this one software package doesn’t appropriately handle cases were inotify doesn’t function as it should. I've no problems with an application that makes use of inotify, I've an issue with applications expect inotify to always be available even on Overlwayfs/3.0.0-12-generic. * A a filesystem that made it into a release kernel, being a good example.
A simple solution for performance is for tail to scale it's polling. Users won't care much if tail checks every 3 seconds on a file that hasn't change in 30, plus there can be configuration options. My suggestion is, that once after all this logic is a core component, tail won't need inotify support anymore.

[Bug 843268] Re: gnome-control-center doesn't allow to specify proxy exceptions
So... a comment about the lack of a vetting process is immediately followed by a fix with no explanation, nor any testing or user acceptance. I don't think so, as stated there are plenty of Proxies in the world and I've recently discovered that proxy.pac files are vary much a part of corporate networks these days. The bug is incomplete because there has been no testing if the change implemented does either of these two things. 1. Does what the fix was intended to do. 2. Actually corrects the bug posted here. There are plenty of other important bugs to work on: https://bugs.launchpad.net/~cheako Not everyone who posted on this bug saying it effected them marked it as having effected them, too sad. [Bug 1007089] Re: overlayfs alters /proc/self/exe link(s), making result a dead link.
Serge, Applications should not be making use of /proc, so any bug related to an application reading /proc and implicitly trusting it's contents is a separate bug. However correcting inaccuracy in /proc is worthy of a bug report. /sys is the file system for applications to be using as a reliable API, though I don't know if I'd personally trust it's contents either. Applications must check for failures when returning from system calls and /proc is no different, the validity of information exposed must be validated to catch failures. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1007089 Title: overlayfs alters /proc/self/exe link(s), making result a dead link. [Bug 1030519] Re: /proc/self/exe is not necessarily correct on overlayfs
That's only some what reasonable. One would expect a perl API to work always(but it doesn't)... However the same is not true of kernel APIs, the opposite is vary much the case. You don't call open() and then turn right around and operate on the new file handle, no you don't even do this usually in perl. The same could be true of files in proc and actually using stuff in proc is a vary bad API to begin with and perl should migrate to using another API for this. With open you test the return code and based on that you 'trust' the file handle is iether usable or not usable. The same is true of proc, you need to at the vary least see if this is a file that's executable, a simple test. I believe that every application using proc should be modified to not depend on the API, as it CAN be changed at any time. It's not supposed to be used by applications, that's why /sys was written. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to logwatch in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1030519 Title: /proc/self/exe is not necessarily correct on overlayfs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/logwatch/+bug/1030519/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
