It does have the advantage of giving us change notifications for free though. I was also considering adding something to libunity on this because both the unity, files lens, and others might be interested in this data. @Andrea: I think we should dump blacklisted devices in a file formatted like your ~/.gtk-bookmarks, stored in something like ~/.local/share/unity/device-blacklist. We already have a parser in the files lens for this format hence the reuse. The gtk-bookmarks file has a format ala: [label] [label] ... So for my particular setup it could look like: $ cat ~/.local/share/unity/device-blacklist file:///media/Windows7_OS file:///media/SYSTEM_DRV $ And the files lens would just parse this file and append it to the Folders category. Given all this, I don't know if unity supports dragging devices into the launcher yet? The reason that we are not using tools like Tracker and Beagle is that we didn't find them "reasonable performance-wise", nor providing the quality of results, or fine control of queries we wanted. And working "reasonably well" is just not good enough in my book. That said, there's nothing saying we must stick with ZG, it's just that it is an easy practical solution. My personal check list for an indexing tool is something like: a) Doesn't crawl you home dir on login (to install inotify watches or check for new stuff) b) High quality query relevancy ranking c) Able to sort by usage frequency or recency d) (wishlist: direct access to index api to inspect term stats etc without the need for DBus roundtrips) Solving a) requires something like btrfs or fsnotify. To my knowledge both Tracker and Beagle rely on inotify (possibly indirectly via GIO). And Tracker fell short on b) + c) + d) last I checked. Solving b), c) , and d) seems to inevitably require something like Zeitgeist combined with Xapian or Lucene (much like we do now :-)). Nautilus is not shown because it has NoDisplay=true in its .desktop file. Just like it is not shown in the Gnome menus. What you can do to open the file manager is to type the first few letters of any of your bookmarked folders. FWIW this was the initial implementation (or at least there was a proof concept done this way) of the launcher's accordion effect in the early Maverick cycle if I recall correctly. I personally preferred that as well and I don't know exactly why it was changed. Thanks lawenlerk, this is exactly the info I need :-) So the reason why this happens is that in order to do incremental narrowing down of the result set we grab a huge chunk of search results from Zeitgeist. We can't just grab all of the results because there might be umpteen gajillion of them and that would be pretty hefty :-) When you then pass in a query like "e" which has tonnes of hits we only extract the first N results and if the desired doc is on position N+1 we wont ever get it since we only narrow the result set down. This is all a hack of course, trying to work around the fact that narrowing down search results like we do isn't really doable with the current software architecture. Another hack we can add on top could be to not fire searches when the search string is just one letter. That's also why we'll kick this off from a PPA so one has to specifically opt in to this and we can put a big fat Caveat Emptor sticker on it.
