[Bug 1866454] Re: Intel NUC5CPYH - dual mouse pointer display when booting with two screens

2022-04-09 Thread Mircea Balog
Just tested on Ubuntu Mate 20.04.4 and
- second mouse pointer still present on the right edge of the second screen,
centered vertically (almost outside of screen just 2-3 pixel inside) as before,
no change.
- it looks like the artifacts on current mouse pointer no longer present, (not
tested enough time, as artifacts does not appear always immediately)

I do not use this system anymore for desktop use for more testing (is
more like a mobile file server and occasional mobile desktop use)

I will upgrade lo latest Ubuntu Mate and return with checking

[Bug 1894833] Re: [Dell XPS 15 7590, Realtek ALC3266, Mic, Internal] Lots of background noise on internal microphone

2021-02-04 Thread Mircea Baja
Update: in my case I took the case with Dell support, they changed some
parts, which included obviously the internal microphone, but also the
trackpad (they are positioned close to each other physically. That fixed
the issue, the sound is good now. In my case the status 'Invalid' is
correct, it was a hardware issue.

2020-09-10 Thread Mircea Baja
** Description changed:

Problem: Lots of background noise on the internal microphone. If I
record it in Audacity it seems that most of the noise is in the Left-
Front channel. The Right-Front channel is still noisy/bad quality, but
  not as bad.

Hardware: Dell XPS 15 7590 laptop (basically 2019 model)
  OS: Ubuntu 20.04 fresh/plain installation:

  Description: Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS

  Other tests:
  - If I use a external/USB headsets+microphone sound is fine
  - If I boot from Ubuntu 20.04 live USB it still has the problem
- - If I boot from Ubuntu 19.10 live USB it still has the problem
+ - Tested with other versions/distributions, but it still has the problem:
ubuntu-19.10-desktop-amd64, linuxmint-20-cinnamon-64bit,
Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-32-1.6, xubuntu-20.04.1-desktop-amd64,
pop-os_20.04_amd64_nvidia_13, ubuntu-18.04.5-desktop-amd64

  - I tried many steps involving changing config files e.g.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/PositionReporting + reboot, none fixed the
problem, reverted the config files back after every change

- - one on center of the "viewport" between two mointor - this one can be
handled on the screen
- - one on the lateral edge of one of the monitor. - this imitate the behaviour
of first without moving
- Note: on xinput there is only one master pointer, so it should not be two on
screen.
+ Affected Systems
+
+ - Tested on Both Ubuntu Mate and regular Ubuntu, both version 19.10 and 20.04

- Workaround
- --
- To solve this issue an workaround is to boot PC with only one monitor, and
connect the second one only after logged-in and OS has finished loading
+ Issue reproduction
+ --
+ - booting with two monitors connected on affected system,
+ (connecting second monitor after login screen -lightdm greeter ... - will
prevent issue appear)

- Ubuntu Mate 19.10 Issue aggravation
- ---
- On 19.10
- - with compositing window manager
- - boot with two monitors to have two pointers
- - use Marco - Adaptive compositor
- The mouse start to flicker on screen alternateing between positions, leaving
trails and screen artifacts make system unusable
- Workaraound - use Marco - No Compositor
+ Workarounds
+ ---
+ - booting with only one monitor connected, and connect the second one later
after log-in screen appear.
+ - on booting with two monitors on Ubuntu Mate: Disabling Marco - Adaptive
compositor to "No Compositor" will solve pointer trailing and screen artifacts,
(but the second mouse pointer remain outside screen.

[Bug 1364079] [NEW] User Profile Image is missing "Select from stock" menu option

2014-09-01 Thread Mircea Husz
Public bug reported:

On a fresh install of XUbuntu 14.04.01 I tried to select a stock image
for my profile.

The only two menu options presented were "Capture from camera" and
"Browse".

I looked on another system with Ubuntu 14.04 installed and found that
the profile icons belong to the gnome-control-center-shared-data
package. On my XUbuntu system I installed gnome-control-center-shared-
data and that fixed the problem. Mugshot now has the menu option "Select
from stock" and was able to select one of the stock images for my
profile.

So it appears that mugshot or the base system is missing a package
dependency to install gnome-control-center-shared-data.

Steps to reproduce:

1 - Click on Settings
2 - Click on About me
3 - Click on the image button

The menu options presented below the image should be "Capture from camera" and
"Browse". "Select from stock" is missing from the list.
The help button on the Mugshot dialog box has a helpful visual description at
this URL: http://wiki.smdavis.us/doku.php?id=mugshot-docs:usage

Steps to fix:

In a terminal window, type apt-get install gnome-control-center-shared-data
This package installs a number of .jpg images in /usr/share/pixmaps/faces

1 - Click on Settings
2 - Click on About me
3 - Click on the image button

The menu options presented below the image show ""Capture from camera",
"Browse", and "Select from stock".

What I don't really understand in the whole threading vs. signals
discussion is why the kernel cannot buffer in a queue of some sort
those signals before processing them. They wouldn't be lost anymore
and the kernel could process them at its own pace.

Make sure rc.local is executable and use full path on the things you
want to run e.g. /sbin/modprobe ...

Subject: [Bug 255678] Re: GSPCA webcam no longer working: no /dev/video0

Got a good hint in #440590:
The modules must be reloaded after boottime to work correctly:

modprobe -r gspca-sunplus
modprobe gscpa-sunplus

That does the trick for me! A /dev/videoX is created, accessable and full
functioning!
I hadn't success putting these lines in rc.local - it won't be executed. Still
have to figure out, why. But if I execute the two lines by hand after every
boot, I have my webcam back, again!

[Bug 61989] Re: [Edgy dhclient regression] error: Message too long

2009-04-09 Thread Mircea B
This is still an issue in Ubuntu 9.04 Beta

I'm behind a router that serves as a DHCP server.
I boot the live CD Ubuntu 9.04 Beta, and I have no connection. The mtu is set
to 64 and dhcp failed.
I have to:
- "sudo vi /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf" and remove "interface-mtu,"
- "sudo ifconfig eth0 mtu 1500"
- then go to NetworkManager Applet and disable and enable back networking

Changing it in the NetworkManager Applet from automatic to 1500 has no
effect.

[Bug 306346] Re: lirc-modules-source gives an error while building with dkms

2009-03-02 Thread Mircea
@Kenny: Sorry I wasn't clear. Step 1 is done: I installed the package
from your PPA and the DKMS build succeeds. It was only after replacing
the lirc_imon driver that the DKMS build failed (step 2). Just in case,
whe you have the time to look into step 2, here is the info you asked
for:

uname -a
Linux mircea-laptop 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Thu Jan 29 19:24:39 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/Linux

After installing you lirc-modules source package, I changed the
lirc_imon.c file and I ran the following:

$ dkms --remove -m lirc -v 0.8.4a --all
$ dkms add -m lirc -v 0.8.4a
$ dkms build --verbose -m lirc -v 0.8.4a

I attached the output of the build. Looking through it, I noticed that
the build indeed fails at lirc_imon. Should I have updated the whole
"drivers" tree? Or do you have any other suggestion? Thanks again for
helping me/us with this.

[Bug 306346] Re: lirc-modules-source gives an error while building with dkms

2009-03-01 Thread Mircea
@ Kenny: I did an apt-get remove and then an install. The problem is
that the "remove" deletes the updated driver, and then the "install"
installs the old driver. Did you have in mind a different way that would
not remove the updated driver once I "apt-get remove"? Or did I get your
instructions completely wrong?

[Bug 306346] Re: lirc-modules-source gives an error while building with dkms

2009-03-01 Thread Mircea
@Kenny: Yes, I meant that the DKMS build still fails. But the error I
get is the same as the one listed above, while the file changed was
another driver file. So I'm not sure it's an error due to an "arbitrary
replacement of files." Moreover, the whole point of this package is (as
far as I know) to allow for the replacement of driver files. Thanks
again for putting the effort in to figure things out - maybe you can try
to look into this, if you have the time?

Steps to reproduce:

1. Install lirc-modules-source from your PPA
2. replace lirc_imon.c in /usr/src/lirc-0.8.4a/drivers/lirc_imon/ with the
latest CVS version at
http://lirc.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/lirc/lirc/drivers/lirc_imon/
3. run dpkg-reconfigure lirc-modules-sources

The error is again:

Error! Could not locate lirc_atiusb.ko for module lirc in the DKMS tree.
You must run a dkms build for kernel 2.6.27-11-generic (i686) first.
Done.

Thanks again for all the help.
PS: I am still on Intrepid, so I won't be able to test the Jaunty packages...

[Bug 306346] Re: lirc-modules-source gives an error while building with dkms

2009-03-01 Thread Mircea
Kenny, thanks for looking into this. However, I think the problem was
partially solved. The package installs successfully, but... What Iwas
trying to do was to "update" one of the lirc modules. As far as I know,
the procedure was to install lirc-modules source, replace the C file for
the module in question with an updated version from LIRC CVS and then
dpkg-reconfigure lirc-modules. When I do all these (after installing the
package from your PPA), the dpkg-reconfigure fails with the same error
as before. Do you have any idea what could be the problem now?

[Bug 306346] Re: lirc-modules-source gives an error while building with dkms

2009-02-11 Thread Mircea
I can confirm this behavior on 2.6.27-11-generic (i686), the module that
"causes" the error is lirc_atiusb.ko:

Unpacking lirc-modules-source (from

[Bug 289852] Re: intrepid: printing very slow

2009-02-03 Thread Mircea
I have a similar problem. It used to work well in Hard, but it's been
broken ever since I upgraded to Intrepid. top shows pdftops (user lp)
using 90% or more of CPU. It's not the same as bug 157044, since that is
related to gs and there's no gs running on my system when trying to
print a pdf. Anybody can think of anything?

System: Intrepid up-to-date
CUPS: 1.3.9-2ubuntu6.1
Poppler-utils: 0.8.7-1ubuntu0.1

Any suggestion would be appreciated...

[Bug 255678] Re: GSPCA webcam no longer working: no /dev/video0

2009-01-24 Thread Mircea
I have a similar problem with a Logitech ClickSmart 310 camera,
supported by gspca (spca500), which used to work without problems in
Hardy. Here is the dmesg output when plugging it in:

[ 99.612061] usb 5-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
[ 99.805082] usb 5-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

[ 100.271448] spca500: registered

No /dev/video is created, and hence no application finds the camera. The
camera is found by lsusb:

Bus 005 Device 003: ID 046d:0900 Logitech, Inc. ClickSmart 310

I installed the libv4l packages as per bug 260918, but I don't think
that's relevant because the error is at the point of mounting the
camera. Any progress on the issue? Any workarounds? (Again, the camera
worked without problems in Hardy, I don't know what caused the
regression and there are no workarounds that I know of yet).

[Bug 67647] Re: Installer window resizes beyond screen limits

2008-11-07 Thread Mircea Bardac
I found the same problem (but in another form) in the Kubuntu 8.10
installer, but trying with a larger number of partitions in a virtual
machine. Basically, the installer window grows horizontally (beyond
800px on 800x600) when having the following partitions: sda1, sda5, 6,
7... 20 + free space. This is indeed extreme and it highly unlikely.

Well, an acceptable solution would be to have the partitions drawn in
the available area and shrinking the size of the rectangle for a
partitions when more partitions are being added. Currently, the
rectangle is stuck with the width of the "sdaX" label inside it. If that
wouldn't matter (and the info would be shown also in a tooltip), I
believe the result would be acceptable.

For my case, this looks better, but it still doesn't scale for the
"highly unlikely situations".

[Bug 262733] Re: totem plays videos half-width

2008-09-04 Thread Mircea
OK. The problem is, how do you change the video driver Totem uses? The
preferences available in the GUI are quite minimalistic and I couldn't
find any information on this.

And if it is a video driver bug rather than a player bug, can somebody
reassign the bug to the relevant package?

[Bug 262733] Re: totem plays videos half-width

2008-09-03 Thread Mircea
Because of fglrx-related problems, I downgraded the kernel
to2.6.24-19.21. I didn't delete any configuration files or anything,
just purged the 2.6.24-21.23 and installed the 19.21 one. As a result,
Totem works fine. Which makes me think that it's not only a
configuration issue - there should be something else going on. I'll be
glad to provide any additional information you think is needed.

[Bug 258344] Re: Hardy does not have support for Realtek 8187 USB

2008-08-30 Thread Mircea
I can confirm that the update to 2.6.24-21.32 breaks fglrx. I think
there's no restricted-modules package for this version, and as a result
fglrx is "partly" loaded (the dreaded MESA OpenGL vendor). It is also
not shown in System-Hardware drivers (at all, not as loaded or
anything). I had to go back to 2.6.24-20 again...

[Bug 262733] Re: totem plays videos half-width

2008-08-29 Thread Mircea
I attached a screenshot of the same movie being played in totem and VLC,
side-by-side. For some reason, I can't take screenshots of movies played
in totem, but the size of the blue rectangle should give you an idea.

And totem plays (the same) movies any problems, i.e. with the correct
dimensions, when run from a new user account. I guess this means it's a
configuration issue, but I just can't figure out which configuration
file or gconf keys I need to look into.

[Bug 262733] [NEW] totem plays videos half-width

2008-08-29 Thread Mircea
Public bug reported:

For the past couple of weeks, totem plays videos "half-width": the
height of the video as required, but the width is only half, so the
video looks stretched vertically. The dimensions of the movie are
detected correctly, as shown in the "properties" sidebar. VLC plays the
videos correctly. The problem is experienced with both totem-xine and
totem-gstreamer and persists after the uninstall and re-install of all
totem or xine-related packages, and the deletion of configuration files
and folders.

Setup: Ubuntu 8.04 up-to-date
kernel: 2.6.24.21.23
totem-xine: 2.22.1-0ubuntu2
totem-gstreamer: 2.22.1-0ubuntu2
Video: fglrx (ATI Mobility X300)

I don't know what generated this problem (totem worked just fine for
more than a year), but on ubuntuforums.org I found other people with the
same problem and no solution. Please let me know if you need any
additional information from me to try to solve this problem.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your reply.
I still wonder though - why don't you use standard regular expressions? I'm
sure you can find libraries for them so they're easy to integrate and everyone
in IT knows them. Are these actually MSWord -style regexes? I must confess I am
annoyed by those and also they are less powerful.

Thanks,
Mircea

[Bug 183733] find/replace for formatting a regular expression won't work

2008-01-17 Thread Mircea
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I have a document with mixed chinese characters and (pinyin) latin
characters and I want to format all latin characters with a Gentius
font.

So I tried using find/replace as follows:

Find[a-zA-Z āēīōūáéíóúǘǎěǐǒǔàèìòùǜ]+
Format (any)

Replace $0
Format Gentius

Options : [x] Regular expressions

What it does is replacing my text with $0 (literally).
Using \0 instead of $0 or the empty string (as in MSWord) doesn't work any
better.
(When using formatted find/replace in MSword it treats the empty string as $0)

I'm using OO 2.3.0 on Ubuntu 7.10.
Also, please note that some fonts display the pinyin accented characters
(āēīōūáéíóúǘǎěǐǒǔàèìòùǜ) erroneously

Thanks,
Mircea

So far, so good... :)

"I upgraded my kernel to the current Hoary Alpha2 version,
2.6.24-2-386". You mean Hardy instead of Hoary, Cruncher. Am I right?

[Bug 179506] Re: Banshee doesn't play anything

I'm well with OSS, and I'm pretty sure this is a known issue with ALSA.
Thanks!

[Bug 179506] Re: Banshee doesn't play anything

2008-01-01 Thread Chirea Mircea
Heh, to my surprise, when Installed OSS v4 with my script
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=655100), I tried to see if
Banshee works. So it's really not a Banshee problem, or a Totem one
(though I installed the xine variant of it), it's an ALSA one, and as I
can't have more than 2 sound sources pumping at a time (one directly,
one via alsa-oss), Banshee couldn't play. But as OSS can handle multiple
sources nicely, I have no problem.

2007-12-31 Thread Chirea Mircea
I'm using Gutsy, but I've enabled backports and I'm pretty sure it has
been backported.

"/etc/default/locale" has this: LANG="C"

[Bug 179506] Re: Banshee doesn't play anything

2007-12-30 Thread Chirea Mircea
Hmm, it seems that Totem can't play OGG files as well (they appear to be
playing, but there's no sound and I can't adjust the volume). I bet
other gstreamer-based players can't as well. I really don't know what
the cause might be.

It seems pulseaudio in Gutsy+1 will save us all from this mess. A big
thanks to Lennart. More than certain that this will be closed in
Gutsy+1.

[Bug 22336] Re: CPU overheats during high usage "throttling "

2007-11-20 Thread Mircea Deaconu
Hello! First of all let me say I am truly regretting doing this. This is
a spam message sent to all critical bug message lists. It's purpose:
making this (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-
support/+bug/59695) bug critical too. This is a long standing bug and
has a very serious impact on laptop type of hardware. It's priority is
set to "wishlist" and I just cannot take this anymore. I DO NOT CARE if
my account gets suspended. I am doing what's right for all my friends
using Ubuntu on their laptops.
